For $n\geq 5$ the natural permutation module for the alternating group $\mathfrak{A}_n$ has a unique non-trivial composition factor, being called its natural simple module. We determine the vertices and sources of the natural simple $\mathfrak{A}_n$-module over fields of characteristic 2.
In this paper we completely characterise irreducible tensor products of representations of alternating groups in characteristic 2 of a basic spin module with an irreducible module. This completes the classification of irreducible tensor products of representations of alternating groups.
In this paper we study irreducible tensor products of representations of alternating groups in characteristics 2 and 3. In characteristic 3 we completely classify irreducible tensor products, while in characteristic 2 we completely classify irreducible tensor products where none of the modules appearing in the product is a basic spin module. In characteristic 2 we also give some necessary conditions for the tensor product of an irreducible module with a basic spin module to be irreducible.
In this article we study the vertices of simple modules for the symmetric groups in prime characteristic $p$. In particular, we complete the classification of the vertices of simple $S_n$-modules labelled by hook partitions.
We investigate the endotrivial modules for the Schur covers of the symmetric and alternating groups and determine the structure of their group of endotrivial modules in all characteristics. We provide a full description of this group by generators and relations in all cases.
In this paper we study the vertices of indecomposable Specht modules for symmetric groups. For any given indecomposable non-projective Specht module, the main theorem of the article describes a family of p-subgroups contained in its vertex. The theorem generalizes and improves an earlier result due to Wildon in "Vertices of Specht modules and blocks of the symmetric group", J. Alg 323 (2010) 2243--2256.
In this article, we consider indecomposable Specht modules with abelian vertices. We show that the corresponding partitions are necessarily $p^2$-cores where $p$ is the characteristic of the underlying field. Furthermore, in the case of $p\geq 3$, or $p=2$ and $μ$ is 2-regular, we show that the complexity of the Specht module $S^μ$ is precisely the $p$-weight of the partition $μ$. In the latter case, we classify Specht modules with abelian vertices. For some applications of the above results, we extend a result of M. Wildon and compute the vertices of the Specht module $S^{(p^p)}$ for $p\geq 3…
We show that the poset of alternating sign matrices, with Bruhat order, is isomorphic to the poset of certain submodules of the dominant Verma module for the special linear Lie algebra $\frak{sl}_n$. The latter poset consists of the intersections of Verma submodules and can also be defined in terms of a Kazhdan-Lusztig cell.
Given $n \in \mathbf{N},$ consider the imprimitive wreath product $C_2 \wr S_n.$ We study the structure of modules whose ordinary characters form an involution model of $FC_2 \wr S_n,$ where $F$ is a field of odd prime characteristic. We classify the vertices of these modules in this case. We then use this classification of the vertices to describe certain columns of the decomposition matrix of $C_2 \wr S_n.$
This paper studies the vertices, in the sense defined by J. A. Green, of Specht modules for symmetric groups. The main theorem gives, for each indecomposable non-projective Specht module, a large subgroup contained in one of its vertices. A corollary of this theorem is a new way to determine the defect groups of symmetric groups. We also use it to find the Green correspondents of a particular family of simple Specht modules; as a corollary, we get a new proof of the Brauer correspondence for blocks of the symmetric group. The proof of the main theorem uses the Brauer homomorphism on modules, a…
Schur modules give the irreducible polynomial representations of the general linear group $\mathrm{GL}_t$. Viewing the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_t$ as a subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_t$, we may restrict Schur modules to $\mathfrak{S}_t$ and decompose the result into a direct sum of Specht modules, the irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{S}_t$. We give an equivariant Möbius inversion formula that we use to invert this expansion in the representation ring for $\mathfrak{S}_t$ for $t$ large. In addition to explicit formulas in terms of plethysms, we show the coefficients that appear alternat…
We show that the Sylow $p$-subgroups of a symmetric group, respectively an alternating group, are characterized as the $p$-subgroups containing all elementary abelian $p$-subgroups up to conjugacy of the symmetric group, respectively the alternating group. We apply the characterization result for symmetric groups to compute the vertices of the hook Specht modules associated to the partition $(kp-p,1^p)$ under the assumption that $k \equiv 1$ mod $p$ and $k \not\equiv 1$ mod $p^2$.
We introduce the alternating Schur algebra $AS_F(n,d)$ as the commutant of the action of the alternating group $A_d$ on the $d$-fold tensor power of an $n$-dimensional $F$-vector space. When $F$ has characteristic different from $2$, we give a basis of $AS_F(n,d)$ in terms of bipartite graphs, and a graphical interpretation of the structure constants. We introduce the abstract Koszul duality functor on modules for the even part of any $\mathbf Z/2\mathbf Z$-graded algebra. The algebra $AS_F(n,d)$ is $\mathbf Z/2\mathbf Z$-graded, having the classical Schur algebra $S_F(n,d)$ as its even part. …
Let Lie(n) be the Lie module of the symmetric group S_n over a field F of characteristic p>0, that is, Lie(n) is the left ideal of FS_n generated by the Dynkin-Specht-Wever element. We study the problem of parametrizing non-projective indecomposable summands of Lie(n), via describing their vertices and sources. Our main result shows that this can be reduced to the case when n is a power of p. When n=9 and p=3, and when n=8 and p=2, we present a precise answer. This suggests a possible parametrization for arbitrary prime powers.
Let p be an odd prime, and A_n the alternating group of degree n. We determine which ordinary irreducible representations of A_n remain irreducible in characteristic p, verifying the author's conjecture from [Represent. Theory 14, 601-626]. Given the preparatory work done in [op. cit.], our task is to determine which self-conjugate partitions label Specht modules for the symmetric group in characteristic p having exactly two composition factors. This is accomplished through the use of the Robinson-Brundan-Kleshchev 'i-restriction' functors, together with known results on decomposition numbers …
We study irreducible restrictions from modules over alternating groups to subgroups. We get reduction results which substantially restrict the classes of subgroups and modules for which this is possible. This is known when the characteristic of the ground field is greater than $3$, but the small characteristics cases require a substantially more delicate analysis and new ideas. In view of our earlier work on symmetric groups we may consider only the restriction of irreducible modules over alternating groups which do not extend to symmetric groups. This work fits into the Aschbacher-Scott progr…
Let $\mathscr{H}_n$ denote the Iwahori-Hecke algebra corresponding to the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. We set up a Green correspondence for bimodules of these Hecke algebras, and a Brauer correspondence between their blocks. We examine Specht modules for $\mathscr{H}_n$ and compute the vertices of certain Specht modules, before using this to give a classification of the vertices of blocks of $\mathscr{H}_n$ in any characteristic. Finally, we apply this classification to resolve the Dipper-Du conjecture about the structure of vertices of indecomposable $\mathscr{H}_n$-modules.
The 4-simplex has vertices 5 unit quaternions, which we arrange so that one of them is the unit. We show that the remaining 4 vertices are the generators of a free group. For the proof, we introduce a new alternating length on words in free groups. We show that for words in simplex vertices the necklace form of the alternating length can be read number theoretically, as the logarithm of the algebraic denominator of their trace.
G. Navarro raised the question under what circumstancs two vertices of two indecomposable modules over a finite group algebra generate a Sylow $p$-subgroup. The present note provides a sufficient criterion for when this is the case. This generalises a result by Navarro for simple modules over finite $p$-solvable groups, which is the main motivation for this note.
We compare lower defect groups associated with $p$-regular classes and vertices of simple modules for a block of a finite group algebra. We show that lower defect groups are contained in vertices of simple modules after suitable reordering. Moreover, for a block of principal type, we show that a $p$-regular lower defect group which contains a vertex of simple module is a defect group of the block.
We compute the Loewy structure of the indecomposable projective modules for the group algebra FG, where G is the alternating group on 10 letters and F is an algebraically closed field of characteristic 3.
Let X be the third exterior power of a six-dimensional complex vector space, equipped with the natural action of the group GL_6(C) of invertible linear transformations of C^6. We describe explicitly the category of GL_6(C)-equivariant coherent D_X-modules as the category of representations of a quiver with relations, which has finite representation type. We give a construction of the six simple equivariant D_X-modules and give formulas for the characters of their underlying GL_6(C)-structures. We describe the (iterated) local cohomology groups with supports given by orbit closures, determining…
In 2010, V. Futorny and S. Ovsienko gave a realization of $U(\mathfrak{gl}_n)$ as a subalgebra of the ring of invariants of a certain noncommutative ring with respect to the action of $S_1\times S_2\times\cdots\times S_n$, where $S_j$ is the symmetric group on $j$ variables. An interesting question is what a similar algebra would be in the invariant ring with respect to a product of alternating groups. In this paper we define such an algebra, denoted $\mathscr{A}(\mathfrak{gl}_n)$, and show that it is a Galois ring. For $n=2$, we show that it is a generalized Weyl algebra, and for $n=3$ provid…
The partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ and the symmetric group $\mathsf{S}_n$ are in Schur-Weyl duality on the $k$-fold tensor power $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$ of the permutation module $\mathsf{M}_n$ of $\mathsf{S}_n$, so there is a surjection $\mathsf{P}_k(n) \to \mathsf{Z}_k(n) := \mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}),$ which is an isomorphism when $n \ge 2k$. We prove a dimension formula for the irreducible modules of the centralizer algebra $\mathsf{Z}_k(n)$ in terms of Stirling numbers of the second kind. Via Schur-Weyl duality, these dimensions equal the multiplicities …
Given a finite group $G$ and a faithful irreducible $FG$-module $V$ where $F$ has prime order, does $G$ have a regular orbit on $V$? This problem is equivalent to determining which primitive permutation groups of affine type have a base of size 2. In this paper, we classify the pairs $(G,V)$ for which $G$ has a regular orbit on $V$ where $G$ is a covering group of a symmetric or alternating group and $V$ is a faithful irreducible $FG$-module such that the order of $F$ is prime and divides the order of $G$.
We study the modular representation theory of the symmetric and alternating groups. One of the most natural ways to label the irreducible representations of a given group or algebra in the modular case is to show the unitriangularity of the decomposition matrices, that is, the existence of a unitriangular basic set. We study several ways to obtain such sets in the general case of a symmetric algebra. We apply our results to the symmetric groups and to their Hecke algebras and thus obtain new ways to label the simple modules for these objects. Finally, we show that these sets do not always exis…
We study the reduced Lefschetz module of the complex of p-radical and p-centric subgroups. We assume that the underlying group G has parabolic characteristic p and the centralizer of a certain noncentral p-element has a component with central quotient H a finite group of Lie type in characteristic p. A non-projective indecomposable summand of the associated Lefschetz module lies in a non-principal block of G and it is a Green correspondent of an inflated, extended Steinberg module for a Lie subgroup of H. The vertex of this summand is the defect group of the block in which it lies.
We give a sufficient condition for the $kG$-Scott module with vertex $P$ to remain indecomposable under taking the Brauer construction for any subgroup $Q$ of $P$ as $k[Q\,C_G(Q)]$-module, where $k$ is a field of characteristic $2$, and $P$ is a wreathed $2$-subgroup of a finite group $G$. This generalizes results for the cases where $P$ is abelian and some others. The motivation of this paper is that the Brauer indecomposability of a $p$-permutation bimodule ($p$ is a prime) is one of the key steps in order to obtain a splendid stable equivalence of Morita type by making use of the gluing met…
Let $G$ be a finite group, and $α$ a nontrivial character of $G$. The McKay graph $\mathcal{M}(G,α)$ has the irreducible characters of $G$ as vertices, with an edge from $χ_1$ to $χ_2$ if $χ_2$ is a constituent of $αχ_1$. We study the diameters of McKay graphs for finite simple groups $G$. For alternating groups, we prove a conjecture made in [LST]: there is an absolute constant $C$ such that $\hbox{diam}\,{\mathcal M}(G,α) \le C\frac{\log |\mathsf{A}_n|}{\log α(1)}$ for all nontrivial irreducible characters $α$ of $\mathsf{A}_n$. Also for classsical groups of symplectic or orthogonal type of …
Let $G$ be a finite group and let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $2$ and let $M$ be an indecomposable $kG$-module which affords a non-degenerate $G$-invariant symmetric bilinear form. We introduce the symmetric vertices of $M$. Each of these is a $2$-subgroup of $G$ which contains a Green vertex of $M$ with index at most $2$. If $M$ is irreducible then its symmetric vertices are determined up to $G$-conjugacy. If $B$ is the real $2$-block of $G$ containing $M$, we show that each symmetric vertex of $M$ is contained in an extended defect group of $B$. Moreover, we charac…
We study the permutation action of a finite symplectic group of characteristic 2 on the set of subspaces of its standard module which are either totally isotropic or else complementary to totally isotropic subspaces with respect to the alternating form. A general formula is obtained for the 2-rank of the incidence matrix for the inclusion of one-dimensional subspaces in the distinguished subspaces of a fixed dimension.
We investigate the representation of the symmetric group afforded by the action on its conjugacy class of fixed point free involutions, over an algebraically closed field of finite characteristic p. We discuss the general form of the set of involutions fixed by an arbitrary vertex of an irreducible component of the module afforded by the action, and show how such a set is composed of certain basic fixed point sets which we can enumerate in the case p = 2. The Broué correspondence allows us to pass from the fixed point sets to the vertices.
We study the indecomposable summands of the permutation module obtained by inducing the trivial $\mathbb{F}(S_a\wr S_n)$-module to the full symmetric group $S_{an}$ for any field $\mathbb{F}$ of odd prime characteristic $p$ such that $a<p\leq n$. In particular we characterize the vertices of such indecomposable summands. As a corollary we will disprove a modular version of Foulkes' Conjecture. In the second part of the article we will use this information to give a new description of some columns of the decomposition matrices of symmetric groups in terms of the ordinary character of the Foulke…
Let K be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0 and let Sp(2m) be the symplectic group of rank m over K. The main theorem of this article gives the character of the rational simple Sp(2m)-modules with fundamental highest weight as an explicit alternating sum of characters of Weyl modules. One obtains several formulae for the dimensions of these simple modules, what allows us to investigate the asymptotic behavior of these dimensions, for a given p, when the rank m is growing towards infinity. One also gets the simple Weyl modules with fundamental highest weight, and the article en…
This paper studies connections between the preprojective modules over the path algebra of a finite connected quiver without oriented cycles, the (+)-admissible sequences of vertices, and the Weyl group. For each preprojective module, there exists a unique up to a certain equivalence shortest (+)-admissible sequence annihilating the module. A (+)-admissible sequence is the shortest sequence annihilating some preprojective module if and only if the product of simple reflections associated to the vertices of the sequence is a reduced word in the Weyl group. These statements have the following app…
In an attempt to get some information on the multiplicative structure of the Green ring we study algebraic modules for simple groups, and associated groups such as quasisimple and almost-simple groups. We prove that, for almost all groups of Lie type in defining characteristic, the natural module is non-algebraic. For alternating and symmetric groups, we prove that the simple modules in $p$-blocks with defect groups of order $p^2$ are algebraic, for $p\leq 5$. Finally, we analyze nine sporadic groups, finding that all simple modules are algebraic for various primes and sporadic groups
By a result of Hemmer, every simple Specht module of a finite symmetric group over a field of odd characteristic is a signed Young module. While Specht modules are parametrized by partitions, indecomposable signed Young modules are parametrized by certain pairs of partitions. The main result of this article establishes the signed Young module labels of simple Specht modules. Along the way we prove a number of results concerning indecomposable signed Young modules that are of independent interest. In particular, we determine the label of the indecomposable signed Young module obtained by tensor…
Let V be an even dimensional vector space over a field K of characteristic 2 equipped with a non-degenerate alternating bilinear form f. The divided power algebra DV is considered as a complex with differential defined from f. We examine the cohomology modules as representations of the corresponding symplectic group.
Polynomials with values in an irreducible module of the symmetric group can be given the structure of a module for the rational Cherednik algebra, called a standard module. This algebra has one free parameter and is generated by differential-difference ("Dunkl") operators, multiplication by coordinate functions and the group algebra. By specializing Griffeth's (arXiv:0707.0251) results for the G(r,p,n) setting, one obtains norm formulae for symmetric and antisymmetric polynomials in the standard module. Such polynomials of minimum degree have norms which involve hook-lengths and generalize the…
The purpose of this paper is to give an explicit description of the trivial and alternating components of the irreducible representation decomposition of the bigraded module obtained as the tensor square of the coinvariant space for hyperoctahedral groups.
We consider 2-local geometries and other subgroup complexes for sporadic simple groups. For six groups, the fixed point set of a noncentral involution is shown to be equivariantly homotopy equivalent to a standard geometry for the component of the centralizer. For odd primes, fixed point sets are computed for sporadic groups having an extraspecial Sylow p-subgroup of order p^3, acting on the complex of those p-radical subgroups containing a p-central element in their centers. Vertices for summands of the associated reduced Lefschetz modules are described.
