The author and Nakano recently proved that multiplicities in a Specht filtration of a symmetric group module are well-defined precisely when the characteristic is at least five. This result suggested the possibility of a symmetric group theory analogous to that of good filtrations and tilting modules for $GL_n(k)$. This paper is an initial attempt at such a theory. We obtain two sufficient conditions that ensure a module has a Specht filtration, and a formula for the filtration multiplicities. We then study the categories of modules that satisfy the conditions, in the process obtaining a new result on Specht module cohomology.
Next we consider symmetric group modules that have both Specht and dual Specht filtrations. Unlike tilting modules for $GL_n(k)$, these modules need not be self-dual, and there is no nice tensor product theorem. We prove a correspondence between indecomposable self-dual modules with Specht filtrations and a collection of $GL_n(k)$-modules which behave like tilting modules under the tilting functor. We give some evidence that indecomposable self-dual symmetric group modules with Specht filtrations may be self-dual trivial source modules.
We obtain alternative explicit Specht filtrations for the induced and the restricted Specht modules in the Hecke algebra of the symmetric group (defined over the ring $A=\mathbb Z[q^{1/2},q^{-1/2}]$ where $q$ is an indeterminate) using $C$-bases for these modules. Moreover, we provide a link between a certain $C$-basis for the induced Specht module and the notion of pairs of partitions.
We review a class of modules for the wreath product S(m) wr S(n) of two symmetric groups which are analogous to the Specht modules of the symmetric group, and prove a pair of branching rules for this family of modules. These branching rules describe the behaviour of these wreath product Specht modules under restriction to the wreath products S(m-1) wr S(n) and S(m) wr S(n-1). In particular, we see that these restrictions of wreath product Specht modules have Specht module filtrations, and we obtain combinatorial interpretations of the multiplicities in these filtrations.
Let $\H_n$ be a (degenerate or non-degenerate) Hecke algebra of type $G(\ell,1,n)$, defined over a commutative ring $R$ with one, and let $S(\bmu)$ be a Specht module for $\H_n$. This paper shows that the induced Specht module $S(\bmu)\otimes_{\H_n}\H_{n+1}$ has an explicit Specht filtration.
In a previous paper, the authors studied the radical filtration of a Weyl module $Δ_ζ(λ)$ for quantum enveloping algebras $U_ζ(\overset\circ{\mathfrak g})$ associated to a finite dimensional complex semisimple Lie algebra $\overset\circ{\mathfrak g}$. There $ζ^2=\sqrt[e]{1}$ and $λ$ was, initially, required to be $e$-regular. Some additional restrictions on $e$ were required---e.g., $e>h$, the Coxeter number, and $e$ odd. Translation to a facet gave an explicit semisimple series for all quantum Weyl modules with singular, as well as regular, weights. That is, the sections of the filtration are…
Let $m, n\in{\mathbb N}$. In this paper we study the right permutation action of the symmetric group ${\mathfrak S}_{2n}$ on the set of all the Brauer $n$-diagrams. A new basis for the free ${\mathbb Z}$-module ${\mathfrak B}_n$ spanned by these Brauer $n$-diagrams is constructed, which yields Specht filtrations for ${\mathfrak B}_n$. For any $2m$-dimensional vector space $V$ over a field of arbitrary characteristic, we give an explicit and characteristic free description of the annihilator of the $n$-tensor space $V^{\otimes n}$ in the Brauer algebra ${\mathfrak B}_n(-2m)$. In particular, we …
The elementary divisors of the Gram matrices of Specht modules S^lambda over the symmetric group are determined for two-row partitions and for two-column partitions lambda. More precisely, the subquotients of the Jantzen filtration are calculated using Schaper's formula. Moreover, considering a general partition lambda of n at a prime p > n - lambda_1, the only possible non trivial composition factor of S_p^lambda is induced by the morphism of Carter and Payne, as shown by means of Kleshchev's modular branching rule. This enables the Jantzen filtration to be calculated in this case as well.
Recently Donkin defined signed Young modules as a simultaneous generalization of Young and twisted Young modules for the symmetric group. We show that in odd characteristic, if a Specht module $S^λ$ is irreducible, then $S^λ$ is a signed Young module. Thus the set of irreducible Specht modules coincides with the set of irreducible signed Young modules. This provides evidence for our conjecture that the signed Young modules are precisely the class of indecomposable self-dual modules with Specht filtrations. The theorem is false in characteristic two.
This paper proves that the restriction of a Specht module for a (degenerate or non-degenerate) cyclotomic Hecke algebra, or KLR algebra, of type A has a Specht filtration.
This paper investigates the tilting modules of the cyclotomic q-Schur algebras, the Young modules of the Ariki-Koike algebras, and the interconnections between them. The main tools used to understand the tilting modules are contragredient duality, and the Specht filtrations and dual Specht filtrations of certain permutation modules. Surprisingly, Weyl filtrations -- which are in general more powerful than Specht filtrations -- play only a secondary role.
The restriction of a (dual) Specht module to a smaller symmetric group has a filtration by (dual) Specht modules of this smaller group. In the cellular structure of the group algebra of the symmetric group, the cell modules are exactly the (dual) Specht modules. The partition algebra is a cellular algebra containing the group algebra of the symmetric group. In this article, we study the structure of the restriction of a cell module to the group algebra of a symmetric group (with smaller index) and find conditions for the restriction to possess a (dual) Specht filtration.
Recently Brundan, Kleshchev and Wang introduced a $\Z$-grading on the Specht modules of the degenerate and non-degenerate cyclotomic Hecke algebras of type $G(\ell,1,n)$. In this paper we show that induced Specht modules have an explicit filtration by shifts of graded Specht modules. This proves a conjecture of Brundan, Kleshchev and Wang.
Let n be a positive integer and let p be a prime. Suppose that we take a partition of n, and obtain another partition by moving a node from one row to a shorther row. Carter and Payne showed that if the p-residue of the removed and added positions is the same, then there is a non-zero homomorphism between the corresponding Specht modules for the symmetric group of degree n, defined over a field of characteristic p. In this paper we give a very simple description of such a homomorphism, as a map between polytabloids, using the action of a Murphy-Jucys element. We also present a proof that in th…
Let $G$ be a semisimple algebraic group over a field of characteristic $p > 0$. We prove that the dual Weyl modules for $G$ all have $p$-filtrations when $p$ is not too small. Moreover, we give applications of this theorem to $p^n$-filtrations for $n > 1$, to modules containing the Steinberg module as a tensor factor, and to the Donkin conjecture on modules having $p$-filtrations.
Fulton and Kraskiewicz gave a presentation of Specht modules as a quotient of the space of column tabloids by dual Garnir relations. We simplify this presentation by showing that it can be generated by a single relation for each pair of columns of a tableau with ordered columns, thereby significantly reducing the number of generators given in the original construction. Our presentation applies to all Specht modules, and is of a similar nature to a recent result by Friedmann-Hanlon-Stanley-Wachs that applies to staircase partitions. We show that our presentation implies the Friedmann-Hanlon-Sta…
Building on work of Saxl, we classify the multiplicity-free permutation characters of all symmetric groups of degree 66 or more. A corollary is a complete list of the irreducible characters of symmetric groups (again of degree 66 or more) which may appear in a multiplicity-free permutation representation. The multiplicity-free characters in a related family of monomial characters are also classified. We end by investigating a consequence of these results for Specht filtrations of permutation modules defined over fields of prime characteristic. Remark: parallel work of Godsil and Meagher (arXiv…
In [Boltje,Hartmann: Permutation resolutions for Specht modules, J. Algebraic Combin. 34 (2011), 141-162], a chain complex was constructed in a combinatorial way which conjecturally is a resolution of the (dual of the) integral Specht module for the symmetric group in terms of permutation modules. In this paper we extend the definition of the chain complex to the integral Iwahori Hecke algebra and prove the same partial exactness results that were proved in the symmetric group case. A complete proof of the exactness conjecture in the symmetric group case was recently given by Santana and Yudin…
The symmetric group S_n possesses a nontrivial central extension, whose irreducible representations, different from the irreducible representations of S_n itself, coincide with the irreducible representations of a certain algebra A_n. Recently M.~Nazarov realized irreducible representations of A_n and Young symmetrizers by means of the Howe duality between the Lie superalgebra q(n) and the Hecke algebra H_n, the semidirect product of S_n with the Clifford algebra C_n on n indeterminates. Here I construct one more analog of Young symmetrizers in H_n as well as the analogs of Specht modules for …
We study Young's seminormal basis vectors of the dual Specht modules of the symmetric group, indexed by a certain class of standard tableaux, and their denominators. These vectors include those whose denominators control the splitting of the canonical morphism $Δ(λ+μ) \to Δ(λ) \otimes Δ(μ)$ over $\mathbb{Z}_{(p)}$, where $Δ(ν)$ is the Weyl module of the classical Schur algebra labelled by $ν$.
There are several interesting filtrations on the Cartan subalgebra of a complex simple Lie algebra coming from very different contexts: one is the principal filtration coming from the Langlands dual, one is coming from the Clifford algebra associated with a non-degenerate invariant bilinear form, one is coming from the symmetric algebra and the Chevalley projection, and two other ones are coming from the enveloping algebra and Harish-Chandra projections. It is now known that all these filtrations coincide. This results from a combination of works of several authors (Rohr, Joseph, Alekseev and …
In their 1987 paper Kraśkiewicz and Pragacz defined certain modules, which we call KP modules, over the upper triangular Lie algebra whose characters are Schubert polynomials. In a previous work the author showed that the tensor product of KP modules always has a KP filtration, i.e. a filtration whose each successive quotients are isomorphic to KP modules. In this paper we explicitly construct such filtrations for certain special cases of these tensor product modules, namely $\mathcal{S}_w \otimes S^d(K^i)$ and $\mathcal{S}_w \otimes \bigwedge^d(K^i)$, corresponding to Pieri and dual Pieri rul…
We prove that in positive characteristic a module with good filtration for a group of type E6 restricts to a module with good filtration for a subgroup of type F4. (Recall that a filtration of a module for a semisimple algebraic group is called good if its layers are dual Weyl modules.) Our result confirms a conjecture of Brundan for one more case. The method relies on the canonical Frobenius splittings of Mathieu. Next we settle the remaining cases, in characteristic not 2, with a computer-aided variation on the old method of Donkin.
We provide a classification of generalized tilting modules and full exceptional sequences for the dual extension algebra of the path algebra of a uniformly oriented linear quiver modulo the ideal generated by paths of length two with its opposite algebra. For the classification of generalized tilting modules we develop a combinatorial model for the poset of indecomposable self-orthogonal modules with standard filtration with respect to the relation arising from higher extensions.
Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{F}$ of characteristic $p\geq h$, the Coxeter number of $G$. We observe an easy `recursion formula' for computing the Jantzen sum formula of a Weyl module with $p$-regular highest weight. We also discuss a `duality formula' that relates the Jantzen sum formula to Andersen's sum formula for tilting filtrations and we give two different representation theoretic explanations of the recursion formula. As a corollary, we also obtain an upper bound on the length of the Jantzen filtration of a Weyl module with $p$-regular …
We describe tilting modules of the deformed category O over a semisimple Lie algebra as certain sheaves on a moment graph associated to the corresponding block of category O. We prove that they map to Braden-MacPherson sheaves constructed along the reversed Bruhat order under Fiebig's localization functor. By this means, we get character formulas for tilting modules and explain how Soergel's result about the Andersen filtration gives a Koszul dual proof of the semisimplicity of subquotients of the Jantzen filtration.
In this paper we first construct natural filtrations on the full theta lifts for any real reductive dual pairs. We will use these filtrations to calculate the associated cycles and therefore the associated varieties of Harish-Chandra modules of the indefinite orthogonal groups which are theta lifts of unitary lowest weight modules of the metaplectic double covers of the real symplectic groups. We will show that some of these representations are special unipotent and satisfy a K-type formula in a conjecture of Vogan.
In this paper we study the category of graded modules for the current algebra associated to $\mathfrak{sl}_2$. The category enjoys many nice properties, including a tilting theory which was established in previous work of the authors. We show that the indecomposable tilting modules for $\mathfrak{sl}_2[t]$ are the exterior powers of the fundamental global Weyl module and give the filtration multiplicities in the standard and costandard filtration. An interesting consequence of our result (which is far from obvious from the abstract definition) is that an indecomposable tilting module admits a …
We review some recent advances in modular representation theory of symmetric groups and related Hecke algebras. We discuss connections with Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras and gradings on the blocks of the group algebras $FΣ_n$, which these connections reveal; graded categorification and connections with quantum groups and crystal bases; modular branching rules and the Mullineaux map; graded cellular structure and graded Specht modules; cuspidal systems for affine KLR algebras and imaginary Schur-Weyl duality, which connects representation theory of these algebras to the usual Schur algebras …
We introduce a symmetric monoidal category of modules over the direct limit queer superalgebra $\q (\infty)$. The category can be defined in two equivalent ways with the aid of the large annihilator condition. Tensor products of copies of the natural and the conatural representations are injective objects in this category. We obtain the socle filtrations and formulas for the tensor products of the indecoposable injectives. In addition, it is proven that the category is Koszul self-dual.
The partition algebras are algebras of diagrams (which contain the group algebra of the symmetric group and the Brauer algebra) such that the multiplication is given by a combinatorial rule and such that the structure constants of the algebra depend polynomially on a parameter. This is a survey paper which proves the primary results in the theory of partition algebras. Some of the results in this paper are new. This paper gives: (a) a presentation of the partition algebras by generators and relations, (b) shows that each partition algebra has an ideal which is isomorphic to a basic constructio…
Let G=SL(E) be the special linear algebraic group on E where E is a finite dimensional vector space over a field K of characteristic zero. In this paper we study the canonical filtration of the dual G-module of global sections of a G-linearized invertible sheaf L on the grassmannian G/P where P in G is the parabolic subgroup stabilizing a subspace W in E. We classify the canonical filtration as P-module and as a consequence we recover known formulas on the P-module structure of the jet bundle J(L) on projective space. We study the incidence complex for the invertible sheaf O(d) on the projecti…
The category of level zero representations of current and affine Lie algebras shares many of the properties of other well-known categories which appear in Lie theory and in algebraic groups in characteristic p and in this paper we explore further similarities. The role of the standard and co-standard module is played by the finite-dimensional local Weyl module and the dual of the infinite-dimensional global Weyl module respectively. We define the canonical filtration of a graded module for the current algebra. In the case when $\mathfrak g$ is of type $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}$ we show that the wel…
We formalize some known categorical equivalences to give a rigorous treatment of smooth representations of p-adic general linear groups, as ungraded modules over quiver Hecke algebras of type A. Graded variants of RSK-standard modules are constructed for quiver Hecke algebras. Exporting recent results from the p-adic setting, we describe an effective method for construction and classification of all simple modules as quotients of modules induced from maximal homogenous data. It is established that the products involved in the RSK construction fit the Kashiwara-Kim notion of normal sequences of…
Character polynomials are used to study the restriction of a polynomial representation of a general linear group to its subgroup of permutation matrices. A simple formula is obtained for computing inner products of class functions given by character polynomials. Character polynomials for symmetric and alternating tensors are computed using generating functions with Eulerian factorizations. These are used to compute character polynomials for Weyl modules, which exhibit a duality. By taking inner products of character polynomials for Weyl modules and character polynomials for Specht modules, sta…
Motivated by studying the Unitary Dual Problem, a variation of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials was defined in [Yee08] which encodes signature information at each level of the Jantzen filtration. These so called signed Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials may be used to compute the signatures of invariant Hermitian forms on irreducible highest weight modules. The key result of this paper is a simple relationship between signed Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and classical Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials: signed Kahzdan-Lusztig polynomials are shown to equal classical Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials evaluated at $-q$ ra…
