We investigate differentiability of functions defined on regions of the real quaternion field and obtain a noncommutative version of the Cauchy-Riemann conditions. Then we study the noncommutative analog of the Cauchy integral as well as criteria for functions of a quaternion variable to be analytic. In particular, the quaternionic exponential and logarithmic functions are being considered. Main results include quaternion versions of Hurwitz' theorem, Mittag-Leffler's theorem and Weierstrass theorem.
In the paper [1] we consider a new class, so-called, $G$-monogenic (differentiable in the sense of Gateaux) quaternionic mappings. In the present paper we introduce quaternionic $H$-monogenic (differentiable in the sense of Hausdorff) mappings and establish the relation between $G$-monogenic and $H$-monogenic mappings. The equivalence of different definitions of $G$-monogenic mapping is proved.
Functions of several quaternion variables are investigated and integral representation theorems for them are proved. With the help of them solutions of the $\tilde \partial $-equations are studied. Moreover, quaternion Stein manifolds are defined and investigated.
We introduce and study Hankel operators defined on the Hardy space of regular functions of a quaternionic variable. Theorems analogous to those of Nehari anc C. Fefferman are proved.
We show sufficient and necessary conditions, in terms of some partial differential equations with variable coefficients, for a quaternionic function to admit a continuous derivative in a open set in the sense of C. Schwartz.
The functions studied in the paper are quaternion-valued functions of a quaternionic variable. It is show that the left slice regular functions and right slice regular functions are related by a particular involution. The relation between left slice regular functions, right slice regular functions and intrinsic regular functions is revealed. The classical Laplace transform can be naturally generalized to quaternions in two different ways, which transform a quaternion-valued function of a real variable to a left or right slice regular quaternion-valued function of a quaternionic variable. The u…
In this paper, we establish the quaternionic versions of the potential description of various "small" sets related to the quaternionic plurisubharmonic functions in $\mathbb{H}^n$. We use the quaternionic capacity introduced in \cite{wan4} to characterize the $(-\infty)$-sets of plurisubharmonic functions, as the sets of the vanishing capacity. The latter requirement is also equivalent to the negligibility of the set. We also prove the Josefson's theorem on the equivalence of the locally and globally quaternionic polar sets in $\mathbb{H}^n$, following the method of Bedford-Taylor.
We prove a version of the classical Mittag-Leffler Theorem for regular functions over quaternions. Our result relies upon an appropriate notion of principal part, that is inspired by the recent definition of spherical analyticity.
In this paper, we introduce the quaternionic slice polyanalytic functions and we prove some of their properties. Then, we apply the obtained results to begin the study of the quaternionic Fock and Bergman spaces in this new setting. In particular, we give explicit expressions of their reproducing kernels.
For functions of two quaternionic variables that are regular in the sense of Fueter, we establish a result similar in spirit to the Hanges and Trèves theorem. Namely, we show that a ball contained in the boundary of a domain is a propagator of regular extendability across the boundary.
Notions of a "holomorphic" function theory for functions of a split-quaternionic variable have been of recent interest. We describe two found in the literature and show that one notion encompasses a small class of functions, while the other gives a richer collection. In the second instance, we describe a simple subclass of functions and give two examples of an analogue of the Cauchy-Kowalewski extension in this context.
Motivated by the general problem of extending the classical theory of holomorphic functions of a complex variable to the case of quater- nion functions, we give a notion of an H-derivative for functions of one quaternion variable. We show that the elementary quaternion func- tions introduced by Hamilton as well as the quaternion logarithm function possess such a derivative. We conclude by establishing rules for calculating H-derivatives.
In this paper we prove that, for any $n\in \mathbb N$, the ideal generated by $n$ slice regular functions $f_1,\ldots,f_n$ having no common zeros concides with the entire ring of slice regular functions. The proof required the study of the non-commutative syzygies of a vector of regular functions, that manifest a different character when compared with their complex counterparts.
The goal of this paper is to introduce and study some geometric properties of slice regular functions of quaternion variable like univalence, subordination, starlikeness, convexity and spirallikeness in the unit ball. We prove a number of results, among which an Area-type Theorem, Rogosinski inequality, and a Bieberbach-de Branges Theorem for a subclass of slice regular functions. We also discuss some geometric and algebraic interpretations of our results in terms of maps from $\mathbb R^4$ to itself. As a tool for subordination we define a suitable notion of composition of slice regular funct…
Recent innovations in the differential calculus for functions of non-commuting variables, beginning with a quaternionic variable, are now extended to consider some integration.
The theory of slice regular functions of a quaternionic variable, introduced in 2006 by Gentili and Struppa, extends the notion of holomorphic function to the quaternionic setting. This fast growing theory is already rich of many results and has interesting applications. In this setting, the present paper is devoted to introduce and study the quaternionic counterparts of Hardy spaces of holomorphic functions of one complex variable. The basic properties of the theory of quaternionic Hardy spaces are investigated, and in particular a Poisson-type representation formula, the notions of outer fun…
Let H be the real algebra of quaternions. The notion of regular function of a quaternionic variable recently presented by G. Gentili and D. C. Struppa developed into a quite rich theory. Several properties of regular quaternionic functions are analogous to those of holomorphic functions of one complex variable, although the diversity of the quaternionic setting introduces new phenomena. This paper studies regular quaternionic transformations. We first find a quaternionic analog to the Casorati-Weierstrass theorem and prove that all regular injective functions from H to itself are affine. In pa…
In this paper we prove a new representation formula for slice regular functions, which shows that the value of a slice regular function $f$ at a point $q=x+yI$ can be recovered by the values of $f$ at the points $q+yJ$ and $q+yK$ for any choice of imaginary units $I, J, K.$ This result allows us to extend the known properties of slice regular functions defined on balls centered on the real axis to a much larger class of domains, called axially symmetric domains. We show, in particular, that axially symmetric domains play, for slice regular functions, the role played by domains of holomorphy fo…
This works introduces several notions of subharmonicity for real-valued functions of one quaternionic variable. These notions are related to the theory of slice regular quaternionic functions introduced by Gentili and Struppa in 2006. The interesting properties of these new classes of functions are studied and applied to construct the analogs of Green's functions.
The theory of slice regular functions of a quaternionic variable extends the notion of holomorphic function to the quaternionic setting. This theory, already rich of results, is sometimes surprisingly different from the theory of holomorphic functions of a complex variable. However, several fundamental results in the two environments are similar, even if their proofs for the case of quaternions need new technical tools. In this paper we prove the Landau-Toeplitz Theorem for slice regular functions, in a formulation that involves an appropriate notion of regular $2$-diameter. We then show that …
Here we follow the basic analysis that is common for real and complex variables and find how it can be applied to a quaternionic variable. Non-commutativity of the quaternion algebra poses obstacles for the usual manipulations; but we show how many of those obstacles can be overcome. After a tiny bit of linear algebra we look at the beginnings of differential calculus. The surprising result is that the first order term in the expansion of F(x+delta) is a compact formula involving both F'(x) and [F(x) - F(x*)]/(x-x*).
This paper is devoted to the specific class of pseudoconformal mappings of quaternion and octonion variables. Normal families of functions are defined and investigated. Four criteria of a family being normal are proven. Then groups of pseudoconformal diffeomorphisms of quaternion and octonion manifolds are investigated. It is proven, that they are finite dimensional Lie groups for compact manifolds. Their examples are given. Many charactersitic features are found in comparison with commutative geometry over $\bf R$ or $\bf C$.
This paper studies the singularities of Cullen-regular functions of one quaternionic variable. The quaternionic Laurent series prove to be Cullen-regular. The singularities of Cullen-regular functions are thus classified as removable, essential or poles. The quaternionic analogues of meromorphic complex functions, called semiregular functions, turn out to be quotients of Cullen-regular functions with respect to an appropriate division operation. This allows a detailed study of the poles and their distribution.
Based on a new generalization of Cauchy-Riemann system presented in this paper, we introduce a class of quaternion-valued functions of a quaternionic variable, which are called algebraic regular functions. The set of algebraic regular functions is not only a real associative algebra, but also respect the composition of functions. Using algebraic regular functions as transition maps, we introduce a class of four-manifolds called the regular four-manifolds.
The basic results of a new theory of regular functions of a quaternionic variable have been recently stated, following an idea of Cullen. In this paper we prove the minimum modulus principle and the open mapping theorem for regular functions. The proofs involve some peculiar geometric properties of such functions which are of independent interest.
In this note it is worked out a new set of Laplace-Like equations for quaternions through Riemann-Cauchy hypercomplex relations otained earlier \cite{BorgesZeMarcio}. As in the theory of functions of a complex variable, it is expected that this new set of Laplace-Like equations might be applied to a large number of Physical problems, providing new insights in the Classical Theory Fields.
We study in detail the zero set of a regular function of a quaternionic or octonionic variable. By means of a division lemma for convergent power series, we find the exact relation existing between the zeros of two octonionic regular functions and those of their product. In the case of octonionic polynomials, we get a strong form of the fundamental theorem of algebra. We prove that the sum of the multiplicities of zeros equals the degree of the polynomial and obtain a factorization in linear polynomials.
The article is devoted to holomorphic and meromorphic functions of quaternion and octonion variables. New classes of quasi-conformal and quasi-meromorphic mappings are defined and investigated. Properties of such functions such as their residues and argument principle are studied. It is proved, that the family of all quasi-conformal diffeomorphisms of a domain form a topological group relative to composition of mappings. Cases when it is a finite-dimensional Lie group over $\bf R$ are studied. Relations between quasi-conformal functions and integral transformations of functions over quaternion…
The celebrated 100-year old Phragmen-Lindelof principle is a far reaching extension of the maximum modulus theorem for holomorphic functions of one complex variable. In some recent papers there has been a resurgence of interest in principles of this type for functions of a hypercomplex variable and for solutions of suitable partial differential equations. In the present article we obtain a Phragmen-Lindelof principle for slice regular functions, a class of quaternion-valued functions of a quaternionic variable which has been recently introduced.
The $k$-Cauchy-Fueter operators and complexes are quaternionic counterparts of the Cauchy-Riemann operator and the Dolbeault complex in the theory of several complex variables. To develop the function theory of several quaternionic variables, we need to solve the non-homogeneous $k$-Cauchy-Fueter equation over a domain under the compatibility condition, which naturally leads to a Neumann problem. The method of solving the $\overline{\partial}$-Neumann problem in the theory of several complex variables is applied to this Neumann problem. We introduce notions of $k$-plurisubharmonic functions an…
Octonionic analysis is becoming eminent due to the role of octonions in the theory of G2 manifold. In this article, a new slice theory is introduced as a generalization of the holomorphic theory of several complex variables to the noncommutative or nonassociative realm. The Bochner-Martinelli formula is established for slice functions of several octonionic variables as well as several quaternionic variables. In this setting, we find the Hartogs phenomena for slice regular functions
The $k$-Cauchy-Fueter complex, $k=0,1,\ldots$, in quaternionic analysis are the counterpart of the Dolbeault complex in the theory of several complex variables. In this paper, we construct explicitly boundary complexes of these complexes on boundaries of domains, corresponding to the tangential Cauchy-Riemann complex in complex analysis. They are only known boundary complexes outside of complex analysis that have interesting applications to the function theory. As an application, we establish the Hartogs-Bochner extension for $k$-regular functions, the quaternionic counterpart of holomorphic fu…
The classical theorem of Picard states that a non-constant holomorphic function $f:\mathbb{C}\to\mathbb{C}$ can avoid at most one value. We investigate how many values a non-constant slice regular function of a quaternionic variable $f:\mathbb{H}\to\mathbb{H}$ may avoid.
The theory of slice regular functions of a quaternion variable is applied to the study of orthogonal complex structures on domains Ω of R^4. When Ω is a symmetric slice domain, the twistor transform of such a function is a holomorphic curve in the Klein quadric. The case in which Ω is the complement of a parabola is studied in detail and described by a rational quartic surface in the twistor space CP^3.
Recent innovations on the differential calculus for functions of non-commuting variables, begun for a quaternionic variable, are now extended to the case of a general matrix over the complex numbers. The expansion of F(X+Delta) is given to first order in Delta for general matrix variables X and Delta that do not commute with each other.
We investigate superdifferentiability of functions defined on regions of the real octonion (Cayley) algebra and obtain a noncommutative version of the Cauchy-Riemann conditions. Then we study the noncommutative analog of the Cauchy integral as well as criteria for functions of an octonion variable to be analytic. In particular, the octonion exponential and logarithmic functions are being investigated. Moreover, superdifferentiable functions of variables belonging to Cayley-Dickson algebras (containing the octonion algebra as the proper subalgebra) finite and infinite dimensional are investigat…
