We generalize some facts about function algebras to operator algebras, using the `noncommutative Shilov boundary' or $C^*$-envelope first considered by Arveson. In the first part we study and characterize complete isometries between operator algebras. In the second part we introduce and study a notion of logmodularity for operator algebras. We also give a result on conditional expectations. Many miscellaneous applications are given.
We prove that unital surjective spectral isometries on certain non-simple unital C*-algebras are Jordan isomorphisms. Along the way, we establish several general facts in the setting of semisimple Banach algebras.
We give various characterizations of into (not necessarily onto) complete isometries between $C^*$-algebras, generalizing a classical result of Holsztynski. Our results are related to a natural embedding of the noncommutative Shilov boundary in a second dual.

We introduce the notion of π-extension of the semigroup \mathbb{Z}_+ and study the extensions of the Toeplitz algebras by isometric operators. We show that when the action of the Toeplitz algebra is irreducible all such extensions generate the same algebra, i.e. there are no non-trivial extensions of the Toeplitz algebra. Also we provide the examples of the non-trivial extensions of the Toeplitz algebra in case its representation is reducible.
In this paper we characterize the surjective linear variation norm isometries on JB-algebras. Variation norm isometries are precisely the maps that preserve the maximal deviation, the quantum analogue of the standard deviation, which plays an important role in quantum statistics. Consequently, we characterize the Hilbert's metric isometries on cones in JB-algebras.
Given two complex Hilbert spaces $H$ and $K$, let $S(B(H))$ and $S(B(K))$ denote the unit spheres of the C$^*$-algebras $B(H)$ and $B(K)$ of all bounded linear operators on $H$ and $K$, respectively. We prove that every surjective isometry $f: S(B(K)) \to S(B(H))$ admits an extension to a surjective complex linear or conjugate linear isometry $T: B(K)\to B(H)$. This provides a positive answer to Tingley's problem in the setting of $B(H)$ spaces.
In this paper, motivated by the Berger, Coburn and Lebow and Bercovici, Douglas and Foias theory for tuples of commuting isometries, we study analytic representations and joint invariant subspaces of a class of commuting $n$-isometries and prove that the $C^*$-algebra generated by the $n$-shift restricted to an invariant subspace of finite codimension in $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ is unitarily equivalent to the $C^*$-algebra generated by the $n$-shift on $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$.
This article, addressed to a general audience of functional analysts, is intended to be an illustration of a few basic principles from `noncommutative functional analysis', more specifically the new field of {\em operator spaces.} In our illustration we show how the classical characterization of (possibly non-surjective) isometries between function algebras generalizes to operator algebras. We give some variants of this characterization, and a new proof which has some advantages.
We prove that if $\mathcal{A}$ is a complex, unital semisimple Banach algebra and $\mathcal{B}$ is a complex, unital Banach algebra having a separating family of finite-dimensional irreducible representations, then any unital linear operator from $\mathcal{A}$ onto $\mathcal{B}$ which preserves the spectral radius is a Jordan morphism.
We prove that every surjective isometry between the unit spheres of two von Neumann algebras admits a unique extension to a surjective real linear isometry between these two algebras.
A family $\{T_j\}_{j\in J}$ of commuting Hilbert space operators is said to be a spherical isometry if $\sum_{j\in J}T^*_jT_j=1$ in the weak operator topology. We show that every commuting family $\Cal F$ of spherical isometries has a commuting normal extension $\hat{\Cal F}$. Moreover, if $\hat{\Cal F}$ is minimal, then there exists a natural short exact sequence $0\to\Cal C\to C^*(\Cal F)\to C^*(\hat{\Cal F})\to 0$ with a completely isometric cross-section, where $\Cal C$ is the commutator ideal in $C^*(\Cal F)$. We also show that the space of Toeplitz operators associated to $\Cal F$ is com…
In this article we show that positive surjective isometries between symmetric spaces associated with semi-finite von Neumann algebras are projection disjointness preserving if they are finiteness preserving. This is subsequently used to obtain a structural description of such isometries. Furthermore, it is shown that if the initial symmetric space is a strongly symmetric space with absolutely continuous norm, then a similar structural description can be obtained without requiring positivity of the isometry.
We prove that, if the closed unit ball of a normed space $X$ has sufficiently many extreme points, then every mapping $Φ$ from $X$ into itself with the following property is affine: For any pair of points in $X$, there exists a (not necessarily linear) surjective isometry on $X$ that coincides with $Φ$ at the two points. We also consider surjectivity of such a mapping in some special cases including C$^*$-algebras.
In this article we characterize the extreme points of the unit ball of a non-commutative (quantum) Lorentz space associated with a semi-finite von Neumann algebra. This enables us to show that surjective isometries between non-commutative Lorentz spaces are projection disjointness preserving and finiteness preserving, which facilitates a characterization of the structure of these isometries.
We investigate surjective isometries between projection lattices of two von Neumann algebras. We show that such a mapping is characterized by means of Jordan $^*$-isomorphisms. In particular, we prove that two von Neumann algebras without type I$_1$ direct summands are Jordan $^*$-isomorphic if and only if their projection lattices are isometric. Our theorem extends the recent result for type I factors by G.P. Gehér and P. Šemrl, which is a generalization of Wigner's theorem.
We study the structure of isometries defined on the algebra $\mathcal{A}$ of upper-triangular Toeplitz matrices. Our first result is that a continuous multiplicative isometry $\mathcal{A}\to M_n$ must be of the form either $A\mapsto UAU^*$ or $A\mapsto U\overline AU^*$, where $\overline A$ is the complex conjugation and $U$ is a unitary matrix. In our second result we use a range of ideas in operator theory and linear algebra to show that every linear isometry $\mathcal{A}\to M_n(\mathbb{C})$ is of the form $A\mapsto UAV$ where $U$ and $V$ are two unitary matrices. This implies, in particular,…
A well-known theorem of Paulsen says that if $\mathcal{A}$ is a unital operator algebra and $ϕ:\mathcal{A}\to B(\mathcal{H})$ is a unital completely bounded homomorphism, then $ϕ$ is similar to a completely contractive map $ϕ'$. Motivated by classification problems for Hilbert space contractions, we are interested in making the inverse $ϕ'^{-1}$ completely contractive as well whenever the map $ϕ$ has a completely bounded inverse. We show that there exist invertible operators $X$ and $Y$ such that the map $$ XaX^{-1}\mapsto Yϕ(a)Y^{-1} $$ is completely contractive and is "almost" isometric on a…
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be an atomless semifinite von Neumann algebra (or an atomic von Neumann algebra with all atoms having the same trace) acting on a (not necessarily separable) Hilbert space $H$ equipped with a semifinite faithful normal trace $τ$. Let $E(\mathcal{M},τ) $ be a symmetric operator space affiliated with $ \mathcal{M} $, whose norm is order continuous and is not proportional to the Hilbertian norm $\left\|\cdot\right\|_2$ on $L_2(\mathcal{M},τ)$. We obtain general description of all bounded hermitian operators on $E(\mathcal{M},τ)$. This is the first time that the description of he…
We prove that every surjective isometry from the unit sphere of the space $K(H),$ of all compact operators on an arbitrary complex Hilbert space $H$, onto the unit sphere of an arbitrary real Banach space $Y$ can be extended to a surjective real linear isometry from $K(H)$ onto $Y$. This is probably the first example of an infinite dimensional non-commutative C$^*$-algebra containing no unitaries and satisfying the Mazur--Ulam property. We also prove that all compact C$^*$-algebras and all weakly compact JB$^*$-triples satisfy the Mazur--Ulam property.
We examine the structure of two possible candidates of isometry groups for the spectral triples on $AF$-algebras introduced by Christensen and Ivan. In particular, we completely determine the isometry group introduced by Park, and observe that these groups coincide in the case of the Cantor set. We also show that the construction of spectral triples on crossed products given by Hawkins, Skalski, White and Zacharias, is suitable for the purpose of lifting isometries.
This paper is, in a first stage, devoted to establish a topological--algebraic characterization of the principal component, $\mathcal{U}^0 (M)$, of the set of unitary elements, $\mathcal{U} (M)$, in a unital JB$^*$-algebra $M$. We arrive to the conclusion that, as in the case of unital C$^*$-algebras, $$\begin{aligned}\mathcal{U}^0(M) &= M^{-1}_{\textbf{1}}\cap\mathcal{U} (M) =\left\lbrace U_{e^{i h_n}}\cdots U_{e^{i h_1}}(\textbf{1}) \colon \begin{array}{c} n\in \mathbb{N}, \ h_j\in M_{sa} \forall\ 1\leq j \leq n \end{array} \right\rbrace \end{aligned}$$ is analytically arcwise connected. Our…
For $C^*$-algebra generated by a finite family of isometries $s_j$, $j=1,\dots,d$ satisfying $q_{ij}$-commutation relations \[ s_j^* s_j = I, \quad s_j^* s_k = q_{ij}s_ks_j^*, \qquad q_{ij} = \bar q_{ji}, |q_{ij}|<1, \ 1\le i \ne j \le d, \] we construct an infinite family of unitarily non-equivalent irreducible representations. These representations are deformations of the corresponding class of representations of the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal O_d$.
We prove, in some cases in term of kippenhahn curve, that if 5-by-5 partial isometry whose numerical range is a circular disc then its center is must be the origin. This gives a partial affirmative answer of the Conjecture 5.1. of [H. l. Gau et al., Linear and Multilinear Algebra, 64 (1) 2016, 14--35.], for the five dimensional case.
A collection of partial isometries whose range and initial projections satisfy a specified set of conditions often gives rise to a partial representation of a group. The C*-algebra generated by the partial isometries is thus a quotient of the universal C*-algebra for partial representations of the group, from which it inherits a crossed product structure, of an abelian C*-algebra by a partial action of the group. Questions of faithfulness of representations, simplicity, and ideal structure of these C*-algebras can then be addressed in a unified manner from within the theory of partial actions.…
We associate to each discrete partial dynamical system a universal C*-algebra generated by partial isometries satisfying relations given by a Boolean algebra connected to the discrete partial dynamical system in question. We show that for symbolic dynamical systems like one-sided and two-sided shift spaces and topological Markov chains with an arbitrary state space the C*-algebras usually associated to them, can be obtained in this way. As a consequence of this, we will be able to show that for two-sided shift spaces having a certain property, the crossed product of the two-sided shift space i…
We prove some structure results for isometries between noncommutative Lp spaces associated to von Neumann algebras. We find that an isometry T: Lp(M_1) to Lp(M_2) (1 le p < infty, p not 2) can be canonically expressed in a certain simple form whenever M_1 has variants of Watanabe's extension property. Conversely, this form always defines an isometry provided that M_1 is "approximately semifinite" (defined below). Although neither of these properties is fully understood, we show that they are enjoyed by all semifinite algebras and hyperfinite algebras (with no summand of type I_2), plus others.…
We consider the C*-algebras O_2^q and A_2^q generated, respectively, by isometries s_1, s_2 satisfying the relation s_1^* s_2 = q s_2 s_1^* with |q| < 1 (the deformed Cuntz relation), and by isometries s_1, s_2 satisfying the relation s_2 s_1 = q s_1 s_2 with |q| = 1. We show that O_2^q is isomorphic to the Cuntz-Toeplitz C*-algebra O_2^0 for any |q| < 1. We further prove that A_2^{q_1} is isomorphic to A_2^{q_2} if and only if either q_1 = q_2 or q_1 = complex conjugate of q_2. In the second part of our paper, we discuss the complexity of the representation theory of A_2^q. We show that A_2^q…
Given locally compact quantum groups $\G_1$ and $\G_2$, we show that if the convolution algebras $L^1(\G_1)$ and $L^1(\G_2)$ are isometrically isomorphic as algebras, then $\G_1$ is isomorphic either to $\G_2$ or the commutant $\G_2'$. Furthermore, given an isometric algebra isomorphism $θ:L^1(\G_2) \rightarrow L^1(\G_1)$, the adjoint is a *-isomorphism between $L^\infty(\G_1)$ and either $L^\infty(\G_2)$ or its commutant, composed with a twist given by a member of the intrinsic group of $L^\infty(\G_2)$. This extends known results for Kac algebras (although our proofs are somewhat different) …
In the theory of C*-algebras, interesting noncommutative structures arise as deformations of the tensor product. For instance, the rotation algebra may be seen as a scalar twist deformation of the tensor product of the functions on the circle with itself. We deform the tensor product of two Toeplitz algebras in the same way, introducing the universal C*-algebra generated by two isometries u and v such that uv=e^{it}vu and u*v=e^{-it}vu*, for a fixed real parameter t. Since the second relation implies the first one, we also consider the universal C*-algebra generated by two isometries u and v w…
We prove some noncommutative analogues of a theorem by Plotkin and Rudin about isometries between subspaces of Lp-spaces. Let 0<p<\infty, p not an even integer. The main result of this paper states that in the category of unital subspaces of noncommutative probability Lp-spaces, under some boundedness condition, the unital completely isometric maps come from *-isomorphisms of the underlying von Neumann algebras. Some applications are given, including to non commutative H^p spaces.
We give some new characterizations of unitaries, isometries, unital operator spaces, unital function spaces, operator systems, C*-algebras, and related objects. These characterizations only employ the vector space and operator space structure.
In this note, we will discuss what kind of operators between C*-algebras preserves Jordan triple products {a,b,c}= (ab*c + cb*a)/2. These include especially isometries and disjointness preserving operators.
We develop a notion of a generalized Cuntz-Krieger family of projections and partial isometries where the range of the partial isometries need not have trivial intersection. We associate to these generalized Cuntz-Krieger families a directed graph, with a coloring function on the edge set. We call such a directed graph an edge-colored directed graph. We then study the $C^*$-algebras and the non-selfadjoint operator algebras associated to edge-colored directed graphs. These algebras arise as free products of directed graph algebras with amalgamation. We then determine the $C^*$-envelopes for a …
Let $M$ and $N$ be unital Jordan-Banach algebras, and let $M^{-1}$ and $N^{-1}$ denote the sets of invertible elements in $M$ and $N$, respectively. Suppose that $\mathfrak{M}\subseteq M^{-1}$ and $\mathfrak{N}\subseteq N^{-1}$ are clopen subsets of $M^{-1}$ and $N^{-1}$, respectively, which are closed for powers, inverses and products of the form $U_{a} (b)$. In this paper we prove that for each surjective isometry $Δ: \mathfrak{M}\to \mathfrak{N}$ there exists a surjective real-linear isometry $T_0: M\to N$ and an element $u_0$ in the McCrimmon radical of $N$ such that $Δ(a) = T_0(a) +u_0$ f…
Let $n > 1$. Let $\{U_{ij}\}_{1 \leq i < j \leq n}$ be $\binom{n}{2}$ commuting unitaries on some Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, and suppose $U_{ji} := U_{ij}^*$, $1 \leq i < j \leq n$. An $n$-tuple of isometries $V = (V_1, \ldots ,V_n)$ on $\mathcal{H}$ is called $\mathcal{U}_n$-twisted isometry with respect to $\{U_{ij}\}_{i<j}$ (or simply $\mathcal{U}_n$-twisted isometry if $\{U_{ij}\}_{i<j}$ is clear from the context) if $V_i$'s are in the commutator $\{U_{st}: s \neq t\}'$, and $V_i^*V_j=U_{ij}^*V_jV_i^*$, $i \neq j$ We prove that each $\mathcal{U}_n$-twisted isometry admits a von Neumann-W…
We investigate C^*-algebras generated by scaling elements. We generalize the Wold decomposition and Coburn's theorem on isometries to scaling elements. We also completely determine when the C^*-algebra generated by a scaling element contains an infinite projection.
We study tensor products and nuclearity-related properties of the operator system $\mathcal S_n$ generated by the Cuntz isometries. By using the nuclearity of the Cuntz algebra, we can show that $\mathcal{S}_n$ is $C^*$-nuclear, and this implies a dual row contraction version of Ando's theorem characterizing operators of numerical radius 1. On the other hand, without using the nuclearity of the Cuntz algebra, we are still able to show directly this Ando type property of dual row contractions and conclude that $\mathcal{S}_n$ is $C^*$-nuclear, which yields a new proof of the nuclearity of the C…
We survey the most recent results on extension of isometries between special subsets of the unit spheres of C$^*$-algebras, von Neumann algebras, trace class operators, preduals of von Neumann algebras, and $p$-Schatten-von Neumann spaces, with special interest on Tingley's problem.
We study the spectrum of operators $aT\in B(H)$ on a Hilbert space $H$ where $T$ is an isometry and $a$ belongs to a commutative $C^*$-subalgebra $C(X)\cong A\subseteq B(H)$ such that the formula $L(a)=T^*aT$ defines a faithful transfer operator on $A$. Based on the analysis of the $C^*$-algebra $C^*(A,T)$ generated by the operators $aT$, $a\in A$, we give dynamical conditions implying that the spectrum $σ(aT)$ is invariant under rotation around zero, $σ(aT)$ coincides with essential spectrum $σ_{ess}(aT)$ or that $σ(aT)=\{z\in \mathbb{C}: |z|\leq r(aT)\}$ is a disk. We extend classical Ruelle…

In this paper we consider the operator system $\cl{S}_n$ generated by $n$ Cuntz isometries, i.e. the span of the generators of the Cuntz algebra $\cl{O}_n$ together with their adjoints and the identity. We define an operator subsystem $\cl{E}_n\subseteq M_{n+1}$ and then prove that $\cl{S}_n$ is completely order isomorphic to a quotient of $\cl{E}_n$. This result implies a characterization of positive elements in $M_p(\cl{S}_n)$.
In this paper we show how wavelets originating from multiresolution analysis of scale N give rise to certain representations of the Cuntz algebras O_N, and conversely how the wavelets can be recovered from these representations. The representations are given on the Hilbert space L^2(T) by (S_iξ)(z)=m_i(z)ξ(z^N). We characterize the Wold decomposition of such operators. If the operators come from wavelets they are shifts, and this can be used to realize the representation on a certain Hardy space over L^2(T). This is used to compare the usual scale-2 theory of wavelets with the scale-N theory. …

We extend the usual theory of universal C*-algebras from generators and relations in order to allow some relations to be described using the strong operator topology. In particular, we can allow some infinite sum relations. We prove a universal property for the algebras we define and we show how the Cuntz algebra of infinite isometries as well as the Exel-Laca algebras can be described using infinite sum relations. Finally, we give some sufficient conditions for when a C*-algebra generated by projections and partial isometries is a universal C*-algebra using only norm relations, in case one st…
Surjective isometries between unital C*-algebras were classified in 1951 by Kadison. In 1972 Paterson and Sinclair handled the nonunital case by assuming Kadison's theorem and supplying some supplementary lemmas. Here we combine an observation of Paterson and Sinclair with variations on the methods of Yeadon and the author, producing a fundamentally new proof of the structure of surjective isometries between (nonunital) C*-algebras. In the final section we indicate how our techniques may be applied to classify surjective isometries of noncommutative Lp spaces, extending some recent results of …
