We develop a notion of a generalized Cuntz-Krieger family of projections and partial isometries where the range of the partial isometries need not have trivial intersection. We associate to these generalized Cuntz-Krieger families a directed graph, with a coloring function on the edge set. We call such a directed graph an edge-colored directed graph. We then study the $C^*$-algebras and the non-selfadjoint operator algebras associated to edge-colored directed graphs. These algebras arise as free products of directed graph algebras with amalgamation. We then determine the $C^*$-envelopes for a large class of the non-selfadjoint algebras. Finally, we relate properties of the edge-colored directed graphs to properties of the associated $C^*$-algebra, including simplicity and nuclearity. Using the free product description of these algebras we investigate the $K$-theory of these algebras.
We study some topological properties of maximal ideal spaces of certain algebras of almost periodic functions. Our main result is that such spaces are contractible. We present certain corollaries of this result.
Given a von Neumann algebra $M$ with a faithful normal finite trace, we introduce the so called finite tracial algebra $M_f$ as the intersection of $L_p$-spaces $L_p(M, μ)$ over all $p \geq 1$ and over all faithful normal finite traces $μ$ on $M.$ Basic algebraic and topological properties of finite tracial algebras are studied. We prove that all derivations on these algebras are inner.
We introduce a classification of locally compact Hausdorff topological spaces with respect to the behavior of $σ$-compact subsets, and relying on this classification we study properties of corresponding $C^*$-algebras in terms of frame theory and the theory of $\mathcal A$-compact operators in Hilbert $C^*$-modules, some pathological examples are constructed.
The crossed products of locally C*-algebras are defined and a Takai duality theorem for inverse limit actions of a locally compact group on a locally C*-algebra is proved.
We study the general and connected stable ranks for $C^{\ast}$-algebras. We estimate these ranks for certain $C(X)$-algebras, and use that to do the same for certain group $C^{\ast}$-algebras. Furthermore, we also give estimates for the ranks of crossed product $C^{\ast}$-algebras by finite group actions with the Rokhlin property.
We study the general and connected stable ranks for C*-algebras. We estimate these ranks for pullbacks of C*-algebras, and for tensor products by commutative C*-algebras. Finally, we apply these results to determine these ranks for certain commutative C*-algebras, and non-commutative CW-complexes.
In this paper, we prove that unital homomorphisms from continuous functions on a compact metric space to matrices over a C*-algebra with tracial rank at most one are approximately diagonalizable. We also consider some generalizations of this result.
We study commutants modulo some normed ideal of n-tuples of operators which satisfy a certain approximate unit condition relative to the ideal. We obtain results about the quotient of these Banach algebras by their ideal of compact operators being C*-algebras which have the countable degree-1 saturation property in the model-theory sense of I. Farah and B. Hart. We also obtain results about quasicentral approximate units, multipliers and duality.
We prove that each local Lie $n$-derivation is a Lie $n$-derivation under mild assumptions on the unital algebras with a nontrivial idempotent. As applications, we obtain descriptions of local Lie $n$-derivations on generalized matrix algebras, triangular algebras, nest algebras, von Neumann algebras, and the algebras of locally measurable operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra.
In this paper, a classification is given of real rank zero $C^*$-algebras that can be expressed as inductive limits of a sequence of a subclass of Elliott-Thomsen algebras $\mathcal{C}$.
It is proved that classifiable simple separable nuclear purely infinite C*-algebras having finitely generated K-theory and torsion-free K_1 are semiprojective. This is accomplished by exhibiting these algebras as C*-algebras of infinite directed graphs.
C. Schochet shows Künneth theorem for the $C^*$-algebras in the smallest class of nuclear $C^*$-algebras which contains the separable Type I algebras and is closed under some operations. We calculate the $K$-theory for the crossed product of the infinite tensor product of a unital $C^*$-algebra in this class by the shift. In particular, we calculate the $K$-theory of the lamplighter group $C^*$-algebra.
The note presents a further study of the class of Cuntz--Krieger type algebras. A necessary and sufficient condition is identified that ensures that the algebra is purely infinite, the ideal structure is studied, % and applied to semigraph algebras, and nuclearity is proved by presenting the algebra as a crossed product of an AF-algebra by an abelian group. The results are applied to examples of Cuntz--Krieger type algebras, such as higher rank semigraph $C^*$-algebras and higher rank Exel-Laca algebras.
Let $\mathcal{B}$ be a nonunital separable simple stable C*-algebra with strict comparison of positive elements and $T(\mathcal{B})$ having finite extreme boundary, and let $\mathcal{A}$ be a simple unital separable nuclear C*-algebra. We prove that the Paschke dual algebra $\mathcal{A}^d_{\mathcal{B}}$ is $K_1$-injective. As a consequence, we obtain interesting $KK$-uniqueness theorems which generalize the Brown-Douglas-Fillmore essential codimension property.
We give a partial answer to the question for the precise value of the nuclear dimension of UCT-Kirchberg algebras raised by W. Winter and J. Zacharias. It is shown that every Kirchberg algebra in the UCT-class with torsion free $K_1$-group has nuclear dimension 1.
In this paper we investigate whether positive elements in the multiplier algebras of certain finite C*-algebras can be written as finite linear combinations of projections with positive coefficients (PCP). Our focus is on the category of underlying C*-algebras that are separable, simple, with real rank zero, stable rank one, finitely many extreme traces, and strict comparison of projections by the traces. We prove that the strict comparison of projections holds also in the multiplier algebra of the stabilizer algebra. Based on this result and under the additional hypothesis that the multiplier…
Let $0\longrightarrow \B\stackrel{j}{\longrightarrow}E\stackrelπ{\longrightarrow}\A\longrightarrow 0$ be an extension of $\A$ by $\B$, where $\A$ is a unital simple purely infinite $C^{*}$--algebra. When $\B$ is a simple separable essential ideal of the unital $C^{*}$--algebra $E$ with $\RR(\B)=0$ and {\rm(PC)}, $K_{0}(E)=\{[p]\mid p$ is a projection in $E\setminus B\}$; When $B$ is a stable $C^{*}$--algebra, $\U(C(X,E))/\U_0(C(X,E))\cong K_1(C(X,E))$ for any compact Hausdorff space $X$.
We introduce the Rohlin property and the approximate representability for finite group actions on stably projectionless C*-algebras and study their basic properties. We give some examples of finite group actions on the Razak-Jacelon algebra and show some classification results of these actions. This study is based on the work of Izumi, Robert's classification theorem and Kirchberg's central sequence C*-algebras.
We study a relationship between the ultraproduct of a crossed product von Neumann algebra and the crossed product of an ultraproduct von Neumann algebra. As an application, the continuous core of an ultraproduct von Neumann algebra is described.
We define a collection of tensor product norms for C*-algebras and show that a symmetric tensor product functor on the category of separable C*-algebras need not be associative.
We show that for a C*-algebra A and a discrete group G with an action of G on A, the reduced crossed product C*-algebra possesses a natural generalization of the convolution product, which we suggest should be named the Hadamard product. We show that this product has a natural Stinespring representation and we lift some known results on block Schur products to this setting, but we also show that the block Schur product is a special case of the Hadamard product in a crossed product algebra.
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a $*$-algebra and $\mathcal{M}$ be a $*$-$\mathcal A$-bimodule, we study the local properties of $*$-derivations and $*$-Jordan derivations from $\mathcal{A}$ into $\mathcal{M}$ under the following orthogonality conditions on elements in $\mathcal A$: $ab^*=0$, $ab^*+b^*a=0$ and $ab^*=b^*a=0$. We characterize the mappings on zero product determined algebras and zero Jordan product determined algebras. Moreover, we give some applications on $C^*$-algebras, group algebra, matrix algebras, algebras of locally measurable operators and von Neumann algebras.
Two automorphisms of a simple stable AF algebra with a finite dimensional lattice of lower semicontinuous traces are shown to be outer conjugate if they act in the same way on the K-group and the extremal traces are scaled by numbers which are not equal to 1 and satisfy a certain condition (which always holds if all the scaling factors are less than 1). The proof goes via the Rohlin property. As an application we consider the problem of classifying conjugacy or outer conjugacy classes of certain actions of the circle group on a separable purely infinite C*-algebra.
We prove that any reduced amalgamated free product C*-algebra is KK-equivalent to the corresponding full amalgamated free product C*-algebra. The main ingredient of its proof is Julg--Valette's geometric construction of Fredholm modules with Connes's view for representation theory of operator algebras.
We show a noncommutative Rohlin type theorem for automorphisms of a certain class of purely infinite simple $C^{\ast}$-algebras. This class consists of the purely infinite unital simple $C^{\ast}$-algebras which are in the bootstrap category ${\cal N}$ and have trivial $K_{1}$-groups.
In this paper, we consider the question whether a unital full free product of MF algebras with amalgamation over a finite dimensional C*-algebra is an MF algebra. First, we show that, under a natural condition, a unital full free product of two separable residually finite dimensional (RFD) C*-algebras with amalgamation over a finite dimensional C*-algebra is again a separable RFD C*-algebra. Applying this result on MF C*-algebras, we show that, under a natual condition, a unital full free product of two MF algebras is again an MF algebra. As an application, we show that a unital full free prod…
Some completely positive maps on reduced amalgamated free products of C*-algebras are constructed; these allow a proof that the class of exact unital C*-algebras is closed under taking reduced amalgamated free products. Consequently, the class of exact discrete groups is closed under taking amalgamated free products.
We define partial product systems over N. They generalise product systems over N and Fell bundles over Z. We define Toeplitz C*-algebras and relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebras for them and show that the section C*-algebra of a Fell bundle over Z is a relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebra. We describe the gauge-invariant ideals in the Toeplitz C*-algebra.
Let α:G --> G be an endomorphism of a discrete amenable group such that [G:α(G)]<infinity. We study the structure of the C^* algebra generated by the left convolution operators acting on the left regular representation space, along with the isometry of the space induced by the endomorphism.
In this article we study analogues of the weak expectation property of discrete group C*-algebras and their crossed products, in the discrete quantum group setting, i.e., discrete quantum group C*-algebras and crossed products of C*-algebras with amenable discrete quantum groups.
In this paper, we concentrate on the MF property of reduced free products of unital C*-algebras with amalgamation over finite dimensional C*-algebras. More specifically, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a reduced free product of two UHF algebras amalgamated over a finite-dimensional C*-algebra with respect to trace preserving conditional expectations to be MF.
We consider a product system over the multiplicative semigroup N^x of Hilbert bimodules which is implicit in work of S. Yamashita and of the second named author. We prove directly, using universal properties, that the associated Nica-Toeplitz algebra is an extension of the C^*-algebra Q_N introduced recently by Cuntz.
We consider algebras $e_i Π^λ(Q) e_i$ obtained from deformed preprojective algebra of affine type $Π^λ(Q)$ and an idempotent $e_i$ for certain concrete value of the vector $λ$ which corresponds to the traces of $-1\in SU(2, C)$ in irreducible representations of finite subgroups of $SU(2, C)$. We give a certain realization of these algebras which allows us to construct the $C^*$-enveloping algebras for them. Some well-known results, including description of four projections with sum 2 happen to be a particular case of this picture.
In the paper, we prove that reduced free products of unital AH algebras with respect to given faithful tracial states, in the sense of Voiculescu, are Blackadar and Kirhcberg's MF algebras. We also show that the reduced free products of unital AH algebras with respect to given faithful tracial states, under mild conditions, are not quasidiagonal. Therefore we conclude, for a large class of AH algebras, the Brown-Douglas-Fillmore extension semigroups of the reduced free products of these AH algebras with respect to given faithful tracial states are not groups. Our result is based on Haagerup an…
We introduce a non-symmetric tensor product of representations of UHF algebras by using Kronecker products of matrices. We prove tensor product formulae of GNS representations by product states and show examples.
A duality is discussed for Lie group bundles vs. certain tensor categories with non-simple identity, in the setting of Nistor-Troitsky gauge-equivariant K-theory. As an application, we study C*-algebra bundles with fibre a fixed-point algebra of the Cuntz algebra: a classification is given, and a cohomological invariant is assigned, representing the obstruction to perform an embedding into a continuous bundle of Cuntz algebras. Finally, we introduce the notion of twisted equivariant K-theory.
Trace scaling automorphisms of stable AF algebras with dimension group totally ordered are outer conjugate if the scaling factors are the same (not equal to one). This is an adaptation of a similar result for the AFD type II_infty factor by Connes and extends the previous result for stable UHF algebras.
Some new connections are given between linear orderings and triangular operator algebras. A lexicograhic product is defined for triangular operator algebras and the Jacobson radical of an infinite lexicographic product of upper triangular matrix algebras is determined.
We compute the $K$-theory of comparison $C^*$-algebra associated to a manifold with corners. These comparison algebras are an example of the abstract pseudodifferential algebras introduced by Connes and Moscovici \cite{M3}. Our calculation is obtained by showing that the comparison algebras are a homomorphic image of a groupoid $C^*$-algebra. We then prove an index theorem with values in the $K$-theory groups of the comparison algebra.
A necessary and sufficient condition for the simplicity of the C*-algebra reduced free product of finite dimensional abelian algebras is found, and it is proved that the stable rank of every such free product is 1. Related results about other reduced free products of C*-algebras are proved.
Motivated by the search for new examples of ``noncommutative manifolds'', we study the noncommutative geometry (in the sense of Connes) of the group C*-algebras of various discrete groups. The examples we consider are the infinite dihedral group Z \times_σ $Z_2$ and the semidirect product group $Z \times_σ Z$. We present a unified treatment of the K-homology and cyclic cohomology of these algebras.
We give a short proof of the nuclearity property of a class of Cuntz-Pimsner algebras associated with a Hilbert A-bimodule M, where A is a separable and nuclear C*-algebra. We assume that the left A-action on the bimodule M is given in terms of compact module operators and that M is direct summand of the standard Hilbert module over A.
