Two automorphisms of a simple stable AF algebra with a finite dimensional lattice of lower semicontinuous traces are shown to be outer conjugate if they act in the same way on the K-group and the extremal traces are scaled by numbers which are not equal to 1 and satisfy a certain condition (which always holds if all the scaling factors are less than 1). The proof goes via the Rohlin property. As an application we consider the problem of classifying conjugacy or outer conjugacy classes of certain actions of the circle group on a separable purely infinite C*-algebra.
We classify trace scaling automorphisms of $\mathcal{W}\otimes\mathbb{K}$ up to outer conjugacy, where $\mathcal{W}$ is a certain simple separable nuclear stably projectionless C$^*$-algebra having trivial $K$-groups. Also, we show that all automorphisms of $\mathcal{W}$ with the Rohlin property are outer conjugate to each other. Moreover, we show that the central sequence C$^*$-algebra $F(\mathcal{W})$ of $\mathcal{W}$ is infinitee, which answers a question of Kirchberg.
We classify spectrum-preserving endomorphisms of stable continuous-trace C^*-algebras up to inner automorphism by a surjective multiplicative invariant taking values in finite dimensional vector bundles over the spectrum. Specializing to automorphisms, this gives a different approach to results of Phillips and Raeburn.
Trace scaling automorphisms of stable AF algebras with dimension group totally ordered are outer conjugate if the scaling factors are the same (not equal to one). This is an adaptation of a similar result for the AFD type II_infty factor by Connes and extends the previous result for stable UHF algebras.
We introduce the tracial Rokhlin property for automorphisms of stably finite simple unital C*-algebras containing enough projections. This property is formally weaker than the various Rokhlin properties considered by Herman and Ocneanu, Kishimoto, and Izumi. Our main results are as follows. Consider a stably finite simple unital C*-algebra, and an automorphism of it which has the tracial Rokhlin property. Suppose the algebra has real rank zero and stable rank one, and suppose that the order on projections over the algebra is determined by traces. Then the crossed product by the automorphism al…
We study the automorphism group of a unital, simple, $\mathcal{Z}$-stable $C^{*}$-algebra. In this paper, we generalize the results by the authors in \cite{pr_auto} to $\mathcal{Z}$-stable $C^{*}$-algebras $\mathfrak{A}$ such that $\mathfrak{A} \otimes \mathfrak{B}$ is a separable, nuclear, simple, tracially AI algebras satisfying the Universal Coefficient Theorem (UCT) of Rosenberg and Schochet \cite{uct}. By the results of Lin in \cite{hl_asyunit} and Winter in \cite{ww_localelliott}, $C^{\ast}$-algebras that satisfies the above condition are classified via $K$-theory and traces.
Let $B$ be a finite dimensional C$^\ast$-algebra equipped with its canonical trace induced by the regular representation of $B$ on itself. In this paper, we study various properties of the trace-preserving quantum automorphism group $\G$ of $B$. We prove that the discrete dual quantum group $\hG$ has the property of rapid decay, the reduced von Neumann algebra $L^\infty(\G)$ has the Haagerup property and is solid, and that $L^\infty(\G)$ is (in most cases) a prime type II$_1$-factor. As applications of these and other results, we deduce the metric approximation property, exactness, simplicity …
We prove that the automorphisms of any separable C*-algebra that does not have continuous trace are not classifiable by countable structures up to unitary equivalence. This implies a dichotomy for the Borel complexity of the relation of unitary equivalence of automorphisms of a separable unital C*-algebra: Such relation is either smooth or not even classifiable by countable structures.
We construct centrally large subalgebras in crossed products of $C (X, D)$ by automorphisms in which $D$ is simple, $X$ is compact metrizable, the automorphism induces a minimal homeomorphism of $X$, and a mild technical assumption holds. We use this construction to prove structural properties of the crossed product, such as (tracial) $Z$-stability, stable rank one, real rank zero, and pure infiniteness, in a number of examples. Our examples are not accessible via methods based on finite Rokhlin dimension, either because $D$ is not $Z$-stable or because $X$ is infinite dimensional.
We introduce a general class of automorphisms of rotation algebras, the noncommutative Furstenberg transformations. We prove that fully irrational noncommutative Furstenberg transformations have the tracial Rokhlin property, which is a strong form of outerness. We conclude that crossed products by these automorphisms have stable rank one, real rank zero, and order on projections determined by traces (Blackadar's Second Fundamental Comparability Question). We also prove that several classes of simple quotients of the C*-algebras of discrete subgroups of five dimensional nilpotent Lie groups, co…
We prove several results of the following general form: automorphisms of (or actions of ${\mathbb{Z}}^d$ on) certain kinds of simple separable unital C*-algebras $A$ which have a suitable version of the Rokhlin property are generic among all automorphisms (or actions), or in a suitable class of automorphisms. That is, the ones with the version of the Rokhlin property contain a dense $G_δ$-subset of the set of all such automorphisms (or actions). Specifically, we prove the following. If $A$ is stable under tensoring with the Jiang-Su algebra $Z,$ and has tracial rank zero, then automorphisms wi…
Building on an argument by Toms and Winter, we show that if $A$ is a simple, separable, unital, $\mathcal{Z}$-stable C*-algebra, then the crossed product of $C(X,A)$ by an automorphism is also Z-stable, provided that the automorphism induces a minimal homeomorphism on $X$. As a consequence, we observe that if $A$ is nuclear and purely infinite then the crossed product is a Kirchberg algebra.
We compare the algebras of the quantum automorphism group of finite-dimensional C$^\ast$-algebra $B$, which includes the quantum permutation group $S_N^+$, where $N = \dim B$. We show that matrix amplification and crossed products by trace-preserving actions by a finite Abelian group $Γ$ lead to isomorphic $\ast$-algebras. This allows us to transfer various properties such as inner unitarity, Connes embeddability, and strong $1$-boundedness between the various algebras associated with these quantum groups.
We show that if $A$ is $\mathcal{Z}$, $\mathcal{O}_2$, $\mathcal{O}_{\infty}$, a UHF algebra of infinite type, or the tensor product of a UHF algebra of infinite type and $\mathcal{O}_{\infty}$, then the conjugation action $\mathrm{Aut}(A) \curvearrowright \mathrm{Aut}(A)$ is generically turbulent for the point-norm topology. We moreover prove that if $A$ is either (i) a separable C*-algebra which is stable under tensoring with $\mathcal{Z}$ or $\mathcal{K}$, or (ii) a separable ${\mathrm{II}}_1$ factor which is McDuff or a free product of ${\mathrm{II}}_1$ factors, then the approximately inne…
We find the range of a trace on the $K_0$ group of a crossed product by a time-$t$ automorphism of a mapping torus. We also find a formula to compute the Voiculescu-Brown entropy for such an automorphism. By specializing to the commutative setting, we prove that the crossed products by minimal time-t homeomorphisms of suspensions built over strongly orbit equivalent Cantor minimal systems have isomorphic Elliott invariants. As an application of our results we give examples of dynamical systems on (compact metric) connected 1-dimensional spaces which are not flip conjugate (because of different…
In functional analysis, approximative properties of an object become precise in its ultrapower. We discuss this idea and its consequences for automorphisms of II_1 factors. Here are some sample results: (1) an automorphism is approximately inner if and only if its ultrapower is aleph_0-locally inner; (2) the ultrapower of an outer automorphism is always outer; (3) for unital *-homomorphisms from a separable nuclear C*-algebra into an ultrapower of a II_1 factor, equality of the induced traces implies unitary equivalence. All statements are proved using operator algebraic techniques, but in the…
Let $\mathbb{G}$ be the quantum automorphism group of a finite dimensional C*-algebra $(B,ψ)$ and $Γ$ a discrete group. We want to compute the fusion rules of $\widehatΓ\wr_* \mathbb{G}$. First of all, we will revise the representation theory of $\mathbb{G}$ and, in particular, we will describe the spaces of intertwiners by using noncrossing partitions. It will allow us to find the fusion rules of the free wreath product in the general case of a state $ψ$. We will also prove the simplicity of the reduced C*-algebra, when $ψ$ is a trace, as well as the Haagerup property of $L^\infty(\widehatΓ\w…
In 2007 Phillips and Weaver showed that, assuming the Continuum Hypothesis, there exists an outer automorphism of the Calkin algebra. (The Calkin algebra is the algebra of bounded operators on a separable complex Hilbert space, modulo the compact operators.) In this paper we establish that the analogous conclusion holds for a broad family of quotient algebras. Specifically, we will show that assuming the Continuum Hypothesis, if $A$ is a separable algebra which is either simple or stable, then the corona of $A$ has nontrivial automorphisms. We also discuss a connection with cohomology theory, …
We prove a number of results on the automorphisms of and isomorphisms between Hardy-Toeplitz algebras $\mathcal{T}(D)$ associated to bounded symmetric domains $D$: that the stable isomorphism class of $\mathcal{T}(D)$ determines $D$ (even when it is reducible), that for reducible domains $D=D_1\times\cdots \times D_s$ the automorphisms of the Shilov boundary $\check{S}(D)$ induced by those of $\mathcal{T}(D)$ permute the Shilov boundaries $\check{S}(D_i)$, and that by contrast to arbitrary solvable algebras, automorphisms of $\mathcal{T}(D)$ that are trivial on their character spaces $\check{S…
The conjugacy problem for the pseudo-Anosov automorphisms of a compact surface is studied. To each pseudo-Anosov automorphism f, we assign an AF-algebra A(f) (an operator algebra). It is proved that the assignment is functorial, i.e. every f', conjugate to f, maps to an AF-algebra A(f'), which is stably isomorphic to A(f). The new invariants of the conjugacy of the pseudo-Anosov automorphisms are obtained from the known invariants of the stable isomorphisms of the AF-algebras. Namely, the main invariant is a triple (L, [I], K), where L is an order in the ring of integers in a real algebraic nu…
