The conjugacy problem for the pseudo-Anosov automorphisms of a compact surface is studied. To each pseudo-Anosov automorphism f, we assign an AF-algebra A(f) (an operator algebra). It is proved that the assignment is functorial, i.e. every f', conjugate to f, maps to an AF-algebra A(f'), which is stably isomorphic to A(f). The new invariants of the conjugacy of the pseudo-Anosov automorphisms are obtained from the known invariants of the stable isomorphisms of the AF-algebras. Namely, the main invariant is a triple (L, [I], K), where L is an order in the ring of integers in a real algebraic number field K and [I] an equivalence class of the ideals in L. The numerical invariants include the determinant D and the signature S, which we compute for the case of the Anosov automorphisms. A question concerning the p-adic invariants of the pseudo-Anosov automorphism is formulated.
Athreya, Bufetov, Eskin and Mirzakhani have shown the number of mapping class group lattice points intersecting a closed ball of radius $R$ in Teichmüller space is asymptotic to $e^{hR}$, where $h$ is the dimension of the Teichmüller space. We show for any pseudo-Anosov mapping class $f$, there exists a power $n$, such that the number of lattice points of the $f^n$ conjugacy class intersecting a closed ball of radius $R$ is coarsely asymptotic to $e^{\frac{h}{2}R}$.
We show that there is a family of pseudo-Anosov braids independently parameterized by the braid index and the (canonical) length whose smallest conjugacy invariant sets grow exponentially in the braid index and linearly in the length and conclude that the conjugacy problem remains exponential in the braid index under the current knowledge.
An algorithm is proposed that solves two decision problems for pseudo-Anosov elements in the mapping class group of a surface with at least one marked fixed point. The first problem is the root problem: decide if the element is a power and in this case compute the roots. The second problem is the symmetry problem: decide if the element commutes with a finite order element and in this case compute this element. The structure theorem on which this algorithm is based provides also a new solution to the conjugacy problem.
For a fixed marked surface $S$, we construct polynomial bounds on the periodic and preperiodic lengths of the maximal splitting sequences of a projectively invariant measured train track. We give two consequences of these bounds. Firstly, that the problem of deciding whether a mapping class is pseudo-Anosov lies in $\textbf{NP}$. This is dual to the previously known result that the pseudo-Anosov problem is in $\textbf{co-NP}$. Secondly, that the problem of deciding whether two mapping classes are conjugate lies in $\textbf{co-NP}$. Similarly, this is the dual to the previously known result tha…
Let $γ$ be a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism and $X$ an element of the Teichmuller space of a genus $g$ surface. In this paper, we find asymptotics for the number of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms that are conjugate to $γ$ and the axis of their action on Teichmuller space intersects the ball of radius $R$ centered at $X$, as $R$ tends to infinity.
An Agol cycle is a complete invariant of the conjugacy class of a pseudo-Anosov mapping class. We study necessary and sufficient conditions for equivalent Agol cycles of pseudo-Anosov 3-braids.
We prove a classification theorem for transitive Anosov and pseudo-Anosov flows on closed 3-manifolds, up to orbit equivalence. In many cases, flows on a 3-manifold $M$ are completely determined by the set of free homotopy classes of their (unoriented) periodic orbits. The exceptional cases are flows with a special structure in their orbit space called a ``tree of scalloped regions"; in these cases the set of free homotopy classes of unoriented periodic orbits together with the additional data of a choice of sign for each $π_1(M)$-orbit of tree gives a complete invariant of orbit equivalence c…
For every irreducible automorphism $ϕ\in\text{SL}_3({\mathbb Z})$ of the $3$-torus, for which the product of the expanding eigenvalues is positive, we construct a pseudo-Anosov mapping $f$ of an associated surface, semi-conjugate and almost-isomorphic to $ϕ$, whose stretch factor is the product of the expanding eigenvalues of $ϕ$. This shows that any norm-$1$ cubic Pisot number occurs as the stretch factor of a pseudo-Anosov mapping, proving a conjecture of Fried in degree $3$. A similar construction works for the $4$-torus on condition that $ϕ$ has exactly two eigenvalues outside the unit cir…
We show how to construct an ideal triangulation of a mapping torus of a pseudo-Anosov map punctured along the singular fibers. This gives rise to a new conjugacy invariant of mapping classes, and a new proof of a theorem of Farb-Leininger-Margalit. The approach in this paper is based on ideas of Hamenstadt.
A foliation is R-covered if the leaf space in the universal cover is homeomorphic to the real numbers. We show that, up to topological conjugacy, there are at most two pseudo-Anosov flows transverse to such a foliation. If there are two, then the foliation is weakly conjugate to the the stable foliation of an R-covered Anosov flow. The proof uses the universal circle to R-covered foliations.
We study the behavior of hyperbolic affine automorphisms of a translation surface which is infinite in area and genus that is obtained as a limit of surfaces built from regular polygons studied by Veech. We find that hyperbolic affine automorphisms are not recurrent and yet their action restricted to cylinders satisfies a mixing-type formula with polynomial decay. Then we consider the extent to which the action of these hyperbolic affine automorphisms satisfy Thurston's definition of a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism. In particular we study the action of these automorphisms on simple closed curves…
The dilatation of a pseudo-Anosov braid is a conjugacy invariant. In this paper, we study the dilatation of a special family of pseudo-Anosov braids. We prove an inductive formula to compute their dilatation, a monotonicity and an asymptotic behavior of the dilatation for this family of braids. We also give an example of a family of pseudo-Anosov braids with arbitrarily small dilatation such that the mapping torus obtained from such braid has 2 cusps and has an arbitrarily large volume.
We prove that generic elements of braid groups are pseudo-Anosov, in the following sense: in the Cayley graph of the braid group with n $\ge$ 3 strands, with respect to Garside's generating set, we prove that the proportion of pseudo-Anosov braids in the ball of radius l tends to 1 exponentially quickly as l tends to infinity. Moreover, with a similar notion of genericity, we prove that for generic pairs of elements of the braid group, the conjugacy search problem can be solved in quadratic time. The idea behind both results is that generic braids can be conjugated "easily" into a rigid braid.
We consider the pseudo-Anosov elements of the mapping class group of a surface of genus g that fix a rank k subgroup of the first homology of the surface. We show that the smallest entropy among these is comparable to (k+1)/g. This interpolates between results of Penner and of Farb and the second and third authors, who treated the cases of k=0 and k=2g, respectively, and answers a question of Ellenberg. We also show that the number of conjugacy classes of pseudo-Anosov mapping classes as above grows (as a function of g) like a polynomial of degree k.
This paper analyzes commensurability of the class of surface automorphism generated by two Dehn multitwists. We show pairwise noncommensurability between several classes arising from canonical curve configurations. In addition, we consider the Kenyon-Smillie invariant J of flat surfaces in this setting. We also introduce a general construction of infinite classes of commensurable pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms.
Let $ϕ:G \to G$ be a group endomorphism where $G$ is a finitely generated group of exponential growth, and denote by $R(ϕ)$ the number of twisted $ϕ$-conjugacy classes. Fel'shtyn and Hill \cite{fel-hill} conjectured that if $ϕ$ is injective, then $R(ϕ)$ is infinite. This conjecture is true for automorphisms of non-elementary Gromov hyperbolic groups, see \cite{ll} and \cite {fel:1}. It was showed in \cite {gw:2} that the conjecture does not hold in general. Nevertheless in this paper, we show that the conjecture holds for the Baumslag-Solitar groups $B(m,n)$, where either $|m|$ or $|n|$ is gre…
Let $G$ be a finitely generated polyfree group. If $G$ has nonzero Euler characteristic then we show that $Aut(G)$ has a finite index subgroup in which every automorphism has infinite Reidemeister number. For certain $G$ of length 2, we show that the number of Reidemeister classes of every automorphism is infinite.
Given a group automorphism $ϕ:Γ\to Γ$, one has an action of $Γ$ on itself by $ϕ$-twisted conjugacy, namely, $g.x=gxϕ(g^{-1})$. The orbits of this action are called $ϕ$-conjugacy classes. One says that $Γ$ has the $R_\infty$-property if there are infinitely many $ϕ$-conjugacy classes for every automorphism $ϕ$ of $Γ$. In this paper we show that any irreducible lattice in a connected semi simple Lie group having finite centre and rank at least 2 has the $R_\infty$-property.
Given an automorphism of a free group $F_n$, we consider the following invariants: $e$ is the number of exponential strata (an upper bound for the number of different exponential growth rates of conjugacy classes); $d$ is the maximal degree of polynomial growth of conjugacy classes; $R$ is the rank of the fixed subgroup. We determine precisely which triples $(e,d,R)$ may be realized by an automorphism of $F_n$. In particular, the inequality $e\le (3n-2)/4}$ (due to Levitt-Lustig) always holds. In an appendix, we show that any conjugacy class grows like a polynomial times an exponential under i…
We study the word length entropy of automorphisms of residually nilpotent groups, and how the entropy of such group automorphisms relates to the entropy of induced automorphisms on various nilpotent quotients. We show that much like the structure of a nilpotent group is dictated to a large degree by its abelianization, the entropy of an automorphism of a nilpotent group is dictated by its entropy on the abelianization. We give some applications to the study of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms of surfaces. In particular, we show that if $ψ$ is a non--homological pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of a sur…
The twin group $T_n$ is a right angled Coxeter group generated by $n-1$ involutions and the pure twin group $PT_n$ is the kernel of the natural surjection from $T_n$ onto the symmetric group on $n$ symbols. In this paper, we investigate some structural aspects of these groups. We derive a formula for the number of conjugacy classes of involutions in $T_n$, which quite interestingly, is related to the well-known Fibonacci sequence. We also derive a recursive formula for the number of $z$-classes of involutions in $T_n$. We give a new proof of the structure of $\Aut(T_n)$ for $n \ge 3$, and show…
An infinite family of generalized pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms of the sphere S is constructed, and their invariant foliations and singular orbits are described explicitly by means of generalized train tracks. The complex strucure induced by the invariant foliations is described, and is shown to make S into a complex sphere. The generalized pseudo-Anosovs thus become quasiconformal automorphisms of the Riemann sphere, providing a complexification of the unimodal family which differs from that of the Fatou/Julia theory.
We study a simple problem that arises from the study of Lorentz surfaces and Anosov flows. For a non decreasing map of degree one $h:\mathbb{S}^1\to \mathbb{S}^1$, we are interested in groups of circle diffeomorphisms that act on the complement of the graph of $h$ in $\mathbb{S}^1\times \mathbb{S}^1$ by preserving a volume form. We show that such groups are semi conjugate to subgroups of $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$, and that when $h\in \mathrm{Homeo}(\mathbb{S}^1)$, we have a topological conjugacy. We also construct examples, where $h$ is not continuous, for which there is no such conjugacy.
Random braids that are formed by multiplying randomly chosen permutation braids are studied by analyzing their behavior under Garside's weighted decomposition and cycling. Using this analysis, we propose a polynomial-time algorithm to the conjugacy problem that is successful for random braids in overwhelming probability. As either the braid index or the number of permutation-braid factors increases, the success probability converges to 1 and so, contrary to the common belief, the distribution of hard instances for the conjugacy problem is getting sparser. We also prove a conjecture by Birman a…
Given a countable group $G$ splitting as a free product $G=G_1\ast\dots\ast G_k\ast F_N$, we establish classification results for subgroups of the group $Out(G,\mathcal{F})$ of all outer automorphisms of $G$ that preserve the conjugacy classes of each $G_i$. We show that every finitely generated subgroup $H\subseteq Out(G,\mathcal{F})$ either contains a relatively fully irreducible automorphism, or else it virtually preserves the conjugacy class of a proper free factor relative to the decomposition (the finite generation hypothesis on $H$ can be dropped for $G=F_N$, or more generally when $G$ …
