Let $M$ and $N$ be unital Jordan-Banach algebras, and let $M^{-1}$ and $N^{-1}$ denote the sets of invertible elements in $M$ and $N$, respectively. Suppose that $\mathfrak{M}\subseteq M^{-1}$ and $\mathfrak{N}\subseteq N^{-1}$ are clopen subsets of $M^{-1}$ and $N^{-1}$, respectively, which are closed for powers, inverses and products of the form $U_{a} (b)$. In this paper we prove that for each surjective isometry $Δ: \mathfrak{M}\to \mathfrak{N}$ there exists a surjective real-linear isometry $T_0: M\to N$ and an element $u_0$ in the McCrimmon radical of $N$ such that $Δ(a) = T_0(a) +u_0$ for all $a\in \mathfrak{M}$.\smallskip
Assuming that $M$ and $N$ are unital JB$^*$-algebras we establish that for each surjective isometry $Δ: \mathfrak{M}\to \mathfrak{N}$ the element $Δ(\textbf{1}) =u$ is a unitary element in $N$ and there exist a central projection $p\in M$ and a complex-linear Jordan $^*$-isomorphism $J$ from $M$ onto the $u^*$-homotope $N_{u^*}$ such that $$Δ(a) = J(p\circ a) + J ((\textbf{1}-p) \circ a^*),$$ for all $a\in \mathfrak{M}$. Under the additional hypothesis that there is a unitary element $ω_0$ in $N$ satisfying $U_{ω_0} (Δ(\textbf{1})) = \textbf{1}$, we show the existence of a central projection $p\in M$ and a complex-linear Jordan $^*$-isomorphism $Φ$ from $M$ onto $N$ such that $$Δ(a) = U_{w_0^{*}} \left(Φ(p\circ a) + Φ((\textbf{1}-p) \circ a^*)\right),$$ for all $a\in \mathfrak{M}$.
Based on the characterization of surjective $L^p$-isometries of unitary groups in finite factors, we describe all surjective $L^p$-isometries between Grassmann spaces of projections with the same trace value in semifinite factors.
We prove that every surjective isometry from the unit sphere of the space $K(H),$ of all compact operators on an arbitrary complex Hilbert space $H$, onto the unit sphere of an arbitrary real Banach space $Y$ can be extended to a surjective real linear isometry from $K(H)$ onto $Y$. This is probably the first example of an infinite dimensional non-commutative C$^*$-algebra containing no unitaries and satisfying the Mazur--Ulam property. We also prove that all compact C$^*$-algebras and all weakly compact JB$^*$-triples satisfy the Mazur--Ulam property.
This paper is, in a first stage, devoted to establish a topological--algebraic characterization of the principal component, $\mathcal{U}^0 (M)$, of the set of unitary elements, $\mathcal{U} (M)$, in a unital JB$^*$-algebra $M$. We arrive to the conclusion that, as in the case of unital C$^*$-algebras, $$\begin{aligned}\mathcal{U}^0(M) &= M^{-1}_{\textbf{1}}\cap\mathcal{U} (M) =\left\lbrace U_{e^{i h_n}}\cdots U_{e^{i h_1}}(\textbf{1}) \colon \begin{array}{c} n\in \mathbb{N}, \ h_j\in M_{sa} \forall\ 1\leq j \leq n \end{array} \right\rbrace \end{aligned}$$ is analytically arcwise connected. Our…
Given a separable Banach space $E$, we construct an extremely non-complex Banach space (i.e. a space satisfying that $\|Id + T^2\|=1+\|T^2\|$ for every bounded linear operator $T$ on it) whose dual contains $E^*$ as an $L$-summand. We also study surjective isometries on extremely non-complex Banach spaces and construct an example of a real Banach space whose group of surjective isometries reduces to $\pm Id$, but the group of surjective isometries of its dual contains the group of isometries of a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space as a subgroup.
We prove that unital surjective spectral isometries on certain non-simple unital C*-algebras are Jordan isomorphisms. Along the way, we establish several general facts in the setting of semisimple Banach algebras.
We prove that, if the closed unit ball of a normed space $X$ has sufficiently many extreme points, then every mapping $Φ$ from $X$ into itself with the following property is affine: For any pair of points in $X$, there exists a (not necessarily linear) surjective isometry on $X$ that coincides with $Φ$ at the two points. We also consider surjectivity of such a mapping in some special cases including C$^*$-algebras.
We give some new characterizations of unitaries, isometries, unital operator spaces, unital function spaces, operator systems, C*-algebras, and related objects. These characterizations only employ the vector space and operator space structure.
Let $M$ and $N$ be two unital JB$^*$-algebras and let $\mathcal{U} (M)$ and $\mathcal{U} (N)$ denote the sets of all unitaries in $M$ and $N$, respectively. We prove that the following statements are equivalent: $(a)$ $M$ and $N$ are isometrically isomorphic as (complex) Banach spaces; $(b)$ $M$ and $N$ are isometrically isomorphic as real Banach spaces; $(c)$ There exists a surjective isometry $Δ: \mathcal{U}(M)\to \mathcal{U}(N).$ We actually establish a more general statement asserting that, under some mild extra conditions, for each surjective isometry $Δ:\mathcal{U} (M) \to \mathcal{U} (N…
We prove that every surjective isometry from the unit sphere of a rank-2 Cartan factor $C$ onto the unit sphere of a real Banach space $Y$, admits an extension to a surjective real linear isometry from $C$ onto $Y$. The conclusion also covers the case in which $C$ is a spin factor. This result closes an open problem and, combined with the conclusion in a previous paper, allows us to establish that every JBW$^*$-triple $M$ satisfies the Mazur--Ulam property, that is, every surjective isometry from its unit sphere onto the unit sphere of a arbitrary real Banach space $Y$ admits an extension to a…
We prove that if $\mathcal{A}$ is a complex, unital semisimple Banach algebra and $\mathcal{B}$ is a complex, unital Banach algebra having a separating family of finite-dimensional irreducible representations, then any unital linear operator from $\mathcal{A}$ onto $\mathcal{B}$ which preserves the spectral radius is a Jordan morphism.
Given two complex Hilbert spaces $H$ and $K$, let $S(B(H))$ and $S(B(K))$ denote the unit spheres of the C$^*$-algebras $B(H)$ and $B(K)$ of all bounded linear operators on $H$ and $K$, respectively. We prove that every surjective isometry $f: S(B(K)) \to S(B(H))$ admits an extension to a surjective complex linear or conjugate linear isometry $T: B(K)\to B(H)$. This provides a positive answer to Tingley's problem in the setting of $B(H)$ spaces.
We prove that every surjective isometry between the unit spheres of two von Neumann algebras admits a unique extension to a surjective real linear isometry between these two algebras.
We prove that every JBW$^*$-triple $M$ with rank one or rank bigger than or equal to three satisfies the Mazur--Ulam property, that is, every surjective isometry from the unit sphere of $M$ onto the unit sphere of another Banach space $Y$ extends to a surjective real linear isometry from $M$ onto $Y$. We also show that the same conclusion holds if $M$ is not a JBW$^*$-triple factor, or more generally, if the atomic part of $M^{**}$ is not a rank two Cartan factor.
The principal result in this note is a strengthened version of Kadison's transitivity theorem for unital JB$^*$-algebras, showing that for each minimal tripotent $e$ in the bidual, $\mathfrak{A}^{**}$, of a unital JB$^*$-algebra $\mathfrak{A}$, there exists a self-adjoint element $h$ in $\mathfrak{A}$ satisfying $e\leq \exp(ih)$, that is, $e$ is bounded by a unitary in the principal connected component of the unitary elements in $\mathfrak{A}$. This new result opens the way to attack new geometric results, for example, a Russo--Dye type theorem for maximal norm closed proper faces of the close…
We prove some noncommutative analogues of a theorem by Plotkin and Rudin about isometries between subspaces of Lp-spaces. Let 0<p<\infty, p not an even integer. The main result of this paper states that in the category of unital subspaces of noncommutative probability Lp-spaces, under some boundedness condition, the unital completely isometric maps come from *-isomorphisms of the underlying von Neumann algebras. Some applications are given, including to non commutative H^p spaces.
It is shown that every linear surjective isometry between two right, full, Hilbert C*-modules is a sum of two maps : a (bi-) module map (which is completely isometric and preserves the inner product) and a map that reverses the (bi-) module actions. Every such isometry can be extended to an isometry of the C* linking algebras.
This article, addressed to a general audience of functional analysts, is intended to be an illustration of a few basic principles from `noncommutative functional analysis', more specifically the new field of {\em operator spaces.} In our illustration we show how the classical characterization of (possibly non-surjective) isometries between function algebras generalizes to operator algebras. We give some variants of this characterization, and a new proof which has some advantages.
Surjective isometries between unital C*-algebras were classified in 1951 by Kadison. In 1972 Paterson and Sinclair handled the nonunital case by assuming Kadison's theorem and supplying some supplementary lemmas. Here we combine an observation of Paterson and Sinclair with variations on the methods of Yeadon and the author, producing a fundamentally new proof of the structure of surjective isometries between (nonunital) C*-algebras. In the final section we indicate how our techniques may be applied to classify surjective isometries of noncommutative Lp spaces, extending some recent results of …
In this paper we characterize the surjective linear variation norm isometries on JB-algebras. Variation norm isometries are precisely the maps that preserve the maximal deviation, the quantum analogue of the standard deviation, which plays an important role in quantum statistics. Consequently, we characterize the Hilbert's metric isometries on cones in JB-algebras.
In this paper we characterize surjective isometries on certain classes of non-commutative spaces associated with semi-finite von Neumann algebras: the Lorentz spaces $L^{w,1}$, as well as the spaces $L^1+L^\infty$ and $L^1\cap L^\infty$. The technique used in all three cases relies on characterizations of the extreme points of the unit balls of these spaces. Of particular interest is that the representations of isometries obtained in this paper are global representations.

It is proved that for every surjective linear isometry $V$ on a perfect Banach symmetric ideal $\mathcal C_E\neq \mathcal C_2$ of compact operators, acting in a complex separable infnite-dimensional Hilbert space $\mathcal H$ there exist unitary operators $u$ and $v$ on $\mathcal H$ such that $V(x)=uxv$ or $V(x) = ux^tv$ for all $x\in \mathcal C_E$, where $x^t$ is the transpose of an operator $x$ with respect to a fixed orthonormal basis in $\mathcal H$. In addition, it is shown that any surjective 2-local isometry on a perfect Banach symmetric ideal $\mathcal C_E \neq \mathcal C_2$ is a linea…
A well-known theorem of Paulsen says that if $\mathcal{A}$ is a unital operator algebra and $ϕ:\mathcal{A}\to B(\mathcal{H})$ is a unital completely bounded homomorphism, then $ϕ$ is similar to a completely contractive map $ϕ'$. Motivated by classification problems for Hilbert space contractions, we are interested in making the inverse $ϕ'^{-1}$ completely contractive as well whenever the map $ϕ$ has a completely bounded inverse. We show that there exist invertible operators $X$ and $Y$ such that the map $$ XaX^{-1}\mapsto Yϕ(a)Y^{-1} $$ is completely contractive and is "almost" isometric on a…
Tingley's problem asks whether every surjective isometry between the unit spheres of two Banach spaces admits an extension to a real linear surjective isometry between the whole spaces. In this paper, we give an affirmative answer to Tingley's problem when both spaces are preduals of von Neumann algebras, the spaces of self-adjoint operators in von Neumann algebras or the spaces of self-adjoint normal functionals on von Neumann algebras. We also show that every surjective isometry between the unit spheres of unital C$^*$-algebras restricts to a bijection between their unitary groups. In additi…
In this article we show that positive surjective isometries between symmetric spaces associated with semi-finite von Neumann algebras are projection disjointness preserving if they are finiteness preserving. This is subsequently used to obtain a structural description of such isometries. Furthermore, it is shown that if the initial symmetric space is a strongly symmetric space with absolutely continuous norm, then a similar structural description can be obtained without requiring positivity of the isometry.
We investigate surjective isometries between projection lattices of two von Neumann algebras. We show that such a mapping is characterized by means of Jordan $^*$-isomorphisms. In particular, we prove that two von Neumann algebras without type I$_1$ direct summands are Jordan $^*$-isomorphic if and only if their projection lattices are isometric. Our theorem extends the recent result for type I factors by G.P. Gehér and P. Šemrl, which is a generalization of Wigner's theorem.
In this article we characterize the extreme points of the unit ball of a non-commutative (quantum) Lorentz space associated with a semi-finite von Neumann algebra. This enables us to show that surjective isometries between non-commutative Lorentz spaces are projection disjointness preserving and finiteness preserving, which facilitates a characterization of the structure of these isometries.
We prove that every surjective unital linear mapping which preserves invertible elements from a Banach algebra onto a C*-algebra carrying a faithful tracial state is a Jordan homomorphism thus generalising Aupetit's 1998 result for finite von Neumann algebras.
We study the range of a classifiable class ${\cal A}$ of unital separable simple amenable $C^*$-algebras which satisfy the Universal Coefficient Theorem. The class ${\cal A}$ contains all unital simple AH-algebras. We show that all unital simple inductive limits of dimension drop circle $C^*$-algebras are also in the class. This unifies some of the previous known classification results for unital simple amenable $C^*$-algebras. We also show that there are many other $C^*$-algebras in the class. We prove that, for any partially ordered, simple weakly unperforated rationally Riesz group $G_0$ wi…
We study the structure of isometries defined on the algebra $\mathcal{A}$ of upper-triangular Toeplitz matrices. Our first result is that a continuous multiplicative isometry $\mathcal{A}\to M_n$ must be of the form either $A\mapsto UAU^*$ or $A\mapsto U\overline AU^*$, where $\overline A$ is the complex conjugation and $U$ is a unitary matrix. In our second result we use a range of ideas in operator theory and linear algebra to show that every linear isometry $\mathcal{A}\to M_n(\mathbb{C})$ is of the form $A\mapsto UAV$ where $U$ and $V$ are two unitary matrices. This implies, in particular,…
We prove that every unital C*-algebra $A$ has the Mazur--Ulam property. Namely, every surjective isometry from the unit sphere $S_A$ of $A$ onto the unit sphere $S_Y$ of another normed space $Y$ extends to a real linear map. This extends the result of A. M. Peralta and F. J. Fernandez-Polo who have proved the same under the additional assumption that both $A$ and $Y$ are von Neumann algebras. In the course of the proof, we strengthen Mankiewicz's theorem and prove that every surjective isometry from a closed unit ball with enough extreme points onto an arbitrary convex subset of a normed space…
Let $T: A\to B$ be a (not necessarily surjective) linear isometry between two real JB$^*$-triples. Then for each $a\in A$ there exists a tripotent $u_a$ in the bidual, $B'',$ of $B$ such that \begin{enumerate}[$(a)$] \item $\{u_a,T(\{f,g,h\}),u_a\}=\{u_a,\{T(f),T(g),T(h)\},u_a\}$, for all $f,g,h$ in the real JB$^*$-subtriple, $A_a,$ generated by $a$; \item The mapping $\{u_a,T(\cdot),u_a\} :A_a\rightarrow B''$ is a linear isometry. \end{enumerate} Furthermore, when $B$ is a real C$^*$-algebra, the projection $p=p_a= u_a^* u_a$ satisfies that $T(\cdot)p :A_a\rightarrow B''$ is an isometric trip…
We answer a question of Takesaki by showing that the following can be derived from the thesis of N-T Shen: If A and B are sigma-unital hereditary C*-subalgebras of C such that ||p - q|| < 1, where p and q are the corresponding open projections, then A and B are isomorphic. We give some further elaborations and counterexamples with regard to the sigma-unitality hypothesis. We produce a natural one-to-one correspondence between complete order isomorphisms of C*-algebras and invertible left multipliers of imprimitivity bimodules. A corollary of the above two results is that any complete order iso…
Given a separable unital C*-algebra A, let E denote the Banach-space completion of the A-valued Schwartz space on Rn with norm induced by the A-valued inner product $<f,g>=\int f(x)^*g(x) dx$. The assignment of the pseudodifferential operator B=b(x,D) with A-valued symbol b(x,ξ) to each smooth function with bounded derivatives b defines an injective mapping O, from the set of all such symbols to the set of all operators with smooth orbit under the canonical action of the Heisenberg group on the algebra of all adjointable operators on the Hilbert module E. It is known that O is surjective if A …
We introduce the Jordan-strict topology on the multipliers algebra of a JB$^*$-algebra, a notion which was missing despite the fourty years passed after the first studies on Jordan multipliers. In case that a C$^*$-algebra $A$ is regarded as a JB$^*$-algebra, the J-strict topology of $M(A)$ is precisely the well-studied C$^*$-strict topology. We prove that every JB$^*$-algebra $\mathfrak{A}$ is J-strict dense in its multipliers algebra $M(\mathfrak{A})$, and that latter algebra is J-strict complete. We show that continuous surjective Jordan homomorphisms, triple homomorphisms, and orthogonalit…
Let A be a simple, sigma-unital, non-unital C*-algebra, with metrizable tracial simplex T(A), which is projection-surjective and injective and has strict comparison of positive elements by traces. Then the following are equivalent: (i) A has quasicontinuous scale; (ii) The multiplier algebra M(A) has strict comparison of positive elements by traces; (iii) The coronal algebra M(A)/A is purely infinite; (iii') The quotient M(A)/Imin is purely infinite; (iv) M(A) has finitely many ideals; (v) Imin=Ifin. If furthermore algebra of n by n matrices of A is projection-surjective and injective for ever…
Inspired by the construction of the Cuntz semigroup for a C*-algebra, we introduce the matrix Malcolmson semigroup and the finitely presented module Malcolmson semigroup for a unital ring. These two semigroups are shown to have isomorphic Grothendieck group in general and be isomorphic for von Neumann regular rings. For unital C*-algebras, it is shown that the matrix Malcolmson semigroup has a natural surjective order-preserving homomorphism to the Cuntz semigroup, every dimension function is a Sylvester matrix rank function, and there exist Sylvester matrix rank functions which are not dimens…
The present paper is a sequel to our paper "Metric characterization of isometries and of unital operator spaces and systems". We characterize certain common objects in the theory of operator spaces (unitaries, unital operator spaces, operator systems, operator algebras, and so on), in terms which are purely linear-metric, by which we mean that they only use the vector space structure of the space and its matrix norms. In the last part we give some characterizations of operator algebras (which are not linear-metric in our strict sense described in the paper).
Let $A$ be a unital $C^*$-algebra and let $U_0(A)$ be the group of unitaries of $A$ which are path connected to the identity. Denote by $CU(A)$ the closure of the commutator subgroup of $U_0(A).$ Let $i_A^{(1, n)}\colon U_0(A)/CU(A)\rightarrow U_0(\mathrm M_n(A))/CU(\mathrm M_n(A))$ be the \hm\, defined by sending $u$ to ${\rm diag}(u,1_n).$ We study the problem when the map $i_A^{(1,n)}$ is an isomorphism for all $n.$ We show that it is always surjective and is injective when $A$ has stable rank one. It is also injective when $A$ is a unital $C^*$-algebra of real rank zero, or $A$ has no trac…
For any (unital) exchange ring $R$ whose finitely generated projective modules satisfy the separative cancellation property ($A\oplus A\cong A\oplus B\cong B\oplus B$ implies $A\cong B$), it is shown that all invertible square matrices over $R$ can be diagonalized by elementary row and column operations. Consequently, the natural homomorphism $GL_1(R) \to K_1(R)$ is surjective. In combination with a result of Huaxin Lin, it follows that for any separative, unital C*-algebra $A$ with real rank zero, the topological $K_1(A)$ is naturally isomorphic to the unitary group $U(A)$ modulo the connecte…
We show that no faithful functor from the category of Hilbert spaces with linear isometries into the category of sets preserves directed colimits. Thus Hilbert spaces cannot form an abstract elementary class, even up to change of language. We deduce an analogous result for the category of commutative unital $C^\ast$-algebras with $\ast$-homomorphisms. This implies, in particular, that this category is not axiomatizable by a first-order theory, a strengthening of a conjecture of Bankston.
Let $A,B$ be C*-algebras, $B_A(0;r)$ the open ball in $A$ centered at $0$ with radius $r>0$, and $H:B_A(0;r)\to B$ an orthogonally additive holomorphic map. If $H$ is zero product preserving on positive elements in $B_A(0;r)$, we show, in the commutative case when $A=C_0(X)$ and $B=C_0(Y)$, that there exist weight functions $h_n$'s and a symbol map $φ: Y\to X$ such that $$ H(f)=\sum_{n\geq1} h_n (f\circφ)^n, \quad\forall f\in B_{C_0(X)}(0;r). $$ In the general case, we show that if $H$ is also conformal then there exist central multipliers $h_n$'s of $B$ and a surjective Jordan isomorphism $J:…
