We shall be concerned with the Cauchy problem for quasilinear systems in three space dimensions of the form \label{i.1} \partial^2_tu^I-c^2_IΔu^I = C^{IJK}_{abc}\partial_c u^J\partial_a\partial_b u^K + B^{IJK}_{ab}\partial_a u^J\partial_b u^K, \quad I=1,..., D.
Here we are using the convention of summing repeated indices, and $\partial u$ denotes the space-time gradient, $\partial u=(\partial_0 u, \partial_1 u, \partial_2 u, \partial_3u)$, with $\partial_0=\partial_t$, and $\partial_j=\partial_{x_j}$, $j=1,2,3$. We shall be in the nonrelativistic case where we assume that the wave speeds $c_k$ are all positive but not necessarily equal.
Using a new pointwise estimate of the M. Keel, H. Smith and the author we shall prove global existence of small amplitude solutions for such equations satisfying a null condition. This generalizes the earlier result of Christodoulou and Klainerman where all the wave speeds are the same. Our approach is related to that of Klainerman; however, since we are in the non-relativistic case we cannot use the Lorentz boost vector fields or the Morawetz vector fields. Instead we exploit both the 1/t decay of linear solutions as well as the much easier to prove 1/|x| decay.
Global smooth solutions to the initial value problem for systems of nonlinear wave equations with multiple propagation speeds will be constructed in the case of small initial data and nonlinearities satisfying the null condition.
We prove the existence of a new type of solutions to a nonlinear Schrödinger system. These solutions, which we call "multi-speeds solitary waves", are behaving at large time as a couple of scalar solitary waves traveling at different speeds. The proof relies on the construction of approximations of the multi-speeds solitary waves by solving the system backwards in time and using energy methods to obtain uniform estimates.
We prove several existence and non existence results of solitary waves for a class of nonlinear pseudo-relativistic Hartree equations with general nonlinearities. We use variational methods and some new variational identities involving the half Laplacian.
We propose some modification of Maxwell's equations describing mediums which electric and magnetic properties are changed essentially after interaction with outer electromagnetic field. We show for such mediums that electromagnetic waves have finite speed of propagations property for some time depending on initial energy of electromagnetic field and nonlinear parameters of the problem which are responsible for properties of medium.
The Cauchy problem is studied for systems of quasi-linear wave equations with multiple speeds in two space dimensions. Using the method of Klainerman and Sideris together with the localized energy estimate, we give an alternative proof of a beautiful result of Hoshiga and Kubo.
In this paper, we study the global existence and regularity of Hölder continuous solutions for a series of nonlinear partial differential equations describing nonlinear waves.
We consider a system of coupled nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equations in one space dimension. First, we prove the existence of multi-speed solitary waves, i.e solutions to the system with each component behaving at large times as a solitary wave. Then, we investigate numerically the interaction of two solitary waves supported each on one component. Among the possible outcomes, we find elastic and inelastic interactions, collision with mass extraction and reflexion.
Existence and non-existence results are established for quasilinear elliptic problems with nonlinear boundary conditions and lack of compactness. The proofs combine variational methods with the geometrical feature, due to the competition between the different growths of the non-linearities.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the whole space. After introducing a weaker concept of finite speed of propagation, we show that the concatenation of initial data gives rise to solutions whose time of existence increases as one translates one of the initial data. Moreover, we show that, given global decaying solutions with initial data $u_0, v_0$, if $|y|$ is large, then the concatenated initial data $u_0+v_0(\cdot -y)$ gives rise to globally decaying solutions.
In this article, we consider a viscoelastic plate equation with a logarithmic nonlinearity in the presence of nonlinear frictional damping term. Using the the Faedo-Galerkin method we establish the global existence of the solution of the problem and we also prove few general decay rate results.
We provide a simple proof of the existence of dark solitons of the defocusing cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with periodic inhomogeneous nonlinearity. Moreover, our proof allows for a broader class of inhomogeneities and gives some new properties of the solutions. We also apply our approach to the defocusing cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a periodic potential.
We study the existence of nontrivial solutions for a nonlinear fractional elliptic equation in presence of logarithmic and critical exponential nonlinearities. This problem extends [5] to fractional $N/s$-Laplacian equations with logarithmic nonlinearity. We overcome the lack of compactness due to the critical exponential nonlinearity by using the fractional Trudinger-Moser inequality. The existence result is established via critical point theory.
In this paper we prove global existence for certain multispeed Dirichlet-wave equations with quadratic nonlinearities outside of obstacles. We assume the natural null condition for systems of quasilinear wave equations with multiple speeds. The null condition only puts restrictions on the self-interactions of each wave family. We use the method of commuting vector fields and weighted space-time $L^2$ estimates.
We consider the Cauchy problem for a system of fully nonlinear parabolic equations. In this paper, we shall show the existence of global-in-time solutions to the problem. Our condition to ensure the global existence is specific to the fully nonlinear parabolic system.
In this article, we establish the existence of solutions to the fractional $p-$Kirchhoff type equations with a generalized Choquard nonlinearities without assuming the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition.
We consider the initial value problem for the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a fractional dissipation. Global existence and scattering are proved depending on the order of the fractional dissipation.
In this work we deal with the class of nonlinear (p,q)-Laplacian system. Non-existence results of positive weak solutions for this system are established.
In this paper, we consider a class of nonlinear Choquard equations with critical growth, and we show the existence of solutions of the equations. Besides, we consider the corresponding minimizing problem and prove the existence of a minimizer.
We study a derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation, allowing non-integer powers in the nonlinearity, $|u|^{2σ} u_x$. Making careful use of the energy method, we are able to establish short-time existence of solutions with initial data in the energy space, $H^1$. For more regular initial data, we establish not just existence of solutions, but also well-posedness of the initial value problem. These results hold for real-valued $σ\geq 1,$ while prior existence results in the literature require integer-valued $σ$ or $σ$ sufficiently large ($σ\geq 5/2$), or use higher-regularity function spaces.
We prove the existence of Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piskunov (KPP) type traveling fronts in space-time periodic and mean zero incompressible advection, and establish a variational (minimization) formula for the minimal speeds. We approach the existence by considering limit of a sequence of front solutions to a regularized traveling front equation where the nonlinearity is combustion type with ignition cut-off. The limiting front equation is degenerate parabolic and does not permit strong solutions, however, the necessary compactness follows from monotonicity of fronts and degenerate regularity. We …
We consider the existence and multiplicity of solutions for a class of quasi-linear Schrödinger equations which include the modified nonlinear Schrödinger equations. A new perturbation approach is used to treat the sub-cubic nonlinearity.
We investigate a one-dimensional nonlinear wave system which arises from a variational principle modeling a type of cholesteric liquid crystals. The problem treated here is the Cauchy problem for the same wave speed case with initial data on the parabolic degenerating line. By introducing a partial hodograph transformation, we establish the local existence of smooth solutions in a weighted metric space based on the iteration method. A classical solution of the primary problem is constructed by converting the solution in the partial hodograph variables to that in the original variables.
Consider, in dimension 3, a system of coupled Klein-Gordon equations with different speeds, and an arbitrary quadratic nonlinearity. We show, for data which are small, smooth, and localized, that a global solution exists, and that it scatters. The proof relies on the space-time resonance approach; it turns out that the resonant structure of this equation has features which were not studied before, but which are generic in some sense.
We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a general nonlinearity. In dimension higher than 2, this equation admits travelling wave solutions with a fixed profile which is not the ground state. This kind of profiles are called excited states. In this paper, we construct solutions to NLS behaving like a sum of N excited states which spread up quickly as time grows (which we call multi-solitons). We also show that if the flow around one of these excited states is linearly unstable, then the multi-soliton is not unique, and is unstable.
We study the existence and uniqueness for weak solutions to some classes of anisotropic elliptic Dirichlet problems with data belonging to the natural dual space.
In this article we find the equivalent conditions to assure the existence and uniqueness of positive solutions to semilinear elliptic equations wih double power nonlinearities. As a bonus, we give a simpler proof of our former result that the uniqueness condition comes from the existence condition.
In this paper, we use variational methods to prove the existence of positive solution for the following class of elliptic equation $$ -ε^{2}Δ{u}+V(z)u=f(u) \,\,\, \mbox{in} \,\,\, \mathbb{R}^{2}, $$ where $ε>0$ is a positive parameter, $V$ is a saddle-like potential and $f$ has an exponential critical growth.
In this article we study the existence, continuation and bifurcation from infinity of nonconstant solutions for a nonlinear Neumann problem. We apply the Leray-Schauder degree and the degree for SO(2)-equivariant gradient operators defined by the second author.
This paper concerns with the existence of solitons, namely stable solitary waves in the nonlinear beam equation (NBE) with a suitable nonlinearity. An equation of this type has been introduced by P.J. McKenna and W. Walter as a model of a suspension bridge. We prove both the existence of solitary waves for a large class of nonlinearities and their stability. As far as we know this is the first result about stability of solitary waves in NBE.
We prove a global existence, uniqueness and regularity result for a two-species reaction-diffusion volume-surface system that includes nonlinear bulk diffusion and nonlinear (weak) cross diffusion on the active surface. A key feature is a proof of upper $L^{\infty}$-bounds that exploits the entropic gradient structure of the system.
We consider combustion problems in the presence of complex chemistry and nonlinear diffusion laws leading to fully nonlinear multispecies reaction-diffusion equations. We establish results of existence of solution and maximum principle, i.e. positivity of the mass fractions, which rely on specific properties of the models. The nonlinear diffusion coefficients are obtained by resolution of the so-called Stefan-Maxwell equations.
We derive new results about existence and uniqueness of local and global solutions for nonlinear Schrodinger equation, including self-similar global solutions. Our analysis is performed in the framework of Marcinkiewicz spaces.
In this note we study analytically and numerically the existence and stability of standing waves for one dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations whose nonlinearities are the sum of three powers. Special attention is paid to the curves of non-existence and curves of stability change on the parameter planes.
The paper studies existence of ground states for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a general external magnetic field. In particular, no lattice periodicity or symmetry of the magnetic field, or presence of external electric field is required.
We study a nonlinear equation with an elliptic operator having degenerate coercivity. We prove the existence of a W^{1,1}_0 solution which is distributional or entropic, according to the growth assumptions on a lower order term in divergence form.
The present paper is devoted to the study of the global solution and nonlinear stability to the coupled complex Ginzburg Landau and Burgers equations for sequential flames
We prove the existence of non-trivial solutions for a fractional Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger-Poisson equation in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. The proof is based on the perturbation method and the mountain pass theorem.
The non-existence of global solutions for semirelativistic equations with non-gauge invariant power type nonlinearity is revisited by a relatively direct way with a pointwise estimate of fractional derivative of some test functions.
This note is devoted to a simple proof of blowup of solutions for a nonlinear heat equation. The criterion for a blowup is expressed in terms of a Morrey space norm and is in a sense complementary to conditions guaranteeing the global in time existence of solutions. The method goes back to H. Fujita and extends to other nonlinear parabolic equations.
In this paper, we study the exterior Dirichlet problem for the fully nonlinear elliptic equation $f(λ(D^{2}u))=1$. We obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions of existence of radial solutions with prescribed asymptotic behavior at infinity.
In this paper, we consider the nonlinear fractional Schrödinger equations with Hartree type nonlinearity. We obtain the existence of standing waves by studying the related constrained minimization problems by applying the concentration-compactness principle. Via symmetric decreasing rearrangements, we also show that the standing waves, up to a translations and phases, are positive symmetric nonincreasing functions. Moreover, we prove that the set of minimizers is a stable set for the initial value problem of the equations, that is, a solution whose initial data is near the set will remain near…
In this paper, we consider the nonlinear inhomogeneous compressible elastic waves in three spatial dimensions when the density is a small disturbance around a constant state. In homogeneous case, the almost global existence was established by Klainerman-Sideris [1996_CPAM], and global existence was built by Agemi [2000_Invent. Math.] and Sideris [1996_Invent. Math., 2000_Ann. Math.] independently. Here we establish the corresponding almost global and global existence theory in the inhomogeneous case.
We study the nonlinear wave equation with a sign-changing potential in any space dimension. If the potential is small and rapidly decaying, then the existence of small-amplitude solutions is driven by the nonlinear term. If the potential induces growth in the linearized problem, however, solutions that start out small may blow-up in finite time.
We consider Cauchy problem for the semilinear plate equation with nonlocal nonlinearity. Under mild conditions on the damping coefficient, we prove that the semigroup generated by this problem possesses a global attractor.
We consider the minimizing problem for the energy functional with prescribed mass constraint related to the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with periodic potentials. Using the concentration-compactness principle, we show a complete classification for the existence and non-existence of minimizers for the problem. In the mass-critical case, under a suitable assumption of the potential, we give a detailed description of blow-up behavior of minimizers once the mass tends to a critical value.
We show that reaction-diffusion equations with almost-monotonic nonlinear terms are well-posed in $L^q(Ω)$ for each $1\leq q < \infty$ and the solutions are globally defined.
We consider semilinear parabolic equations with nonlinear boundary conditions. We give conditions which guarantee global existence of solutions as well as blow-up in finite time of all solutions with nontrivial initial data. The results depend on the behavior of variable coefficients as $t \to \infty.$
In this paper, we construct for every $α>0$ and $λ\in {\mathbb C}$ a space of initial values for which there exists a local solution of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} iu_t + Δu + λ|u|^αu= 0 \\ u(0,x) = u_0 \end{cases} \end{equation*} on ${\mathbb R}^N $. Moreover, we construct for every $α>\frac {2} {N}$ a class of (arbitrarily large) initial values for which there exists a global solution that scatters as $t\to \infty $.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions for a family of nonlinear parabolic systems related to phase field models taking in account variations of temperature and the possibility of a general class of nonlinearities. The present results generalizes in certain aspects the already published ones in the literature.
In this paper we prove the existence and linear stability of full dimensional tori with subexponential decay for 1-dimensional nonlinear wave equation with external parameters, which relies on the method of KAM theory and the idea proposed by Bourgain \cite{BJFA2005}.
We study a class of initial boundary value problems of hyperbolic type. A new topological approach is applied to prove the existence of non-negative classical solutions. The arguments are based upon a recent theoretical result.
We study the existence and stability of standing waves associated to the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with a critical rotational speed and an axially symmetric harmonic potential. This equation arises as an effective model describing the attractive Bose-Einstein condensation in a magnetic trap rotating with an angular velocity. By viewing the equation as NLS with a constant magnetic field and with (or without) a partial harmonic confinement, we establish the existence and orbital stability of prescribed mass standing waves for the equation with mass-subcritical, …
