We prove the existence of Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piskunov (KPP) type traveling fronts in space-time periodic and mean zero incompressible advection, and establish a variational (minimization) formula for the minimal speeds. We approach the existence by considering limit of a sequence of front solutions to a regularized traveling front equation where the nonlinearity is combustion type with ignition cut-off. The limiting front equation is degenerate parabolic and does not permit strong solutions, however, the necessary compactness follows from monotonicity of fronts and degenerate regularity. We apply a dynamic argument to justify that the constructed KPP traveling fronts propagate at minimal speeds, and derive the speed variational formula. The dynamic method avoids the degeneracy in traveling front equations, and utilizes the parabolic maximum principle of the governing reaction-diffusion-advection equation. The dynamic method does not rely on existence of traveling fronts.
We consider a Fisher-KPP equation with density-dependent diffusion and advection, arising from a chemotaxis-growth model. We study its behavior as a small parameter, related to the thickness of a diffuse interface, tends to zero. We analyze, for small times, the emergence of transition layers induced by a balance between reaction and drift effects. Then we investigate the propagation of the layers. Convergence to a free-boundary limit problem is proved and a sharp estimate of the thickness of the layers is provided.
We investigate the influence of a general non-local advection term of the form K * u to propagation in the one-dimensional Fisher-KPP equation. This model is a generalization of the Keller-Segel-Fisher system. When K $\in$ L 1 (R), we obtain explicit upper and lower bounds on the propagation speed which are asymptotically sharp and more precise than previous works. When K $\in$ L p (R) with p > 1 and is non-increasing in (--$\infty$, 0) and in (0, +$\infty$), we show that the position of the "front" is of order O(t 1/p) if p < $\infty$ and O(e $λ$t) for some $λ$ > 0 if p = $\infty$ and K(+$\in…
This Note is concerned with the asymptotic behavior of the minimal KPP speed of propagation for reaction- advection-diffusion equations with a large drift Mq (where q is the advection). We first give the limit of the speed as M\rightarrow+\infty in any space dimension N. Then, we give the necessary and sufficient condition that the advection field should satisfy so that the speed acts as O(M) as M \rightarrow+\infty.
We establish the variational principle of Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piskunov (KPP) front speeds in temporally random shear flows inside an infinite cylinder, under suitable assumptions of the shear field. A key quantity in the variational principle is the almost sure Lyapunov exponent of a heat operator with random potential. The variational principle then allows us to bound and compute the front speeds. We show the linear and quadratic laws of speed enhancement as well as a resonance-like dependence of front speed on the temporal shear correlation length. To prove the variational principle, we use…
We prove stochastic homogenization for reaction-advection-diffusion equations with random space-time-dependent KPP reactions with temporal correlations that are decaying in an appropriate sense. We show that the limiting homogenized dynamic has the simple form of spreading with some deterministic direction-dependent speeds from the support of the initial datum. We obtain analogous results for G-equations with random flame speeds and incompressible background advections. Important ingredients in our proofs are a non-autonomous subadditive theorem and the principle of virtual linearity for KPP r…
We consider a reaction-diffusion-advection equation of the form: $u_t=u_{xx}-β(t)u_x+f(t,u)$ for $x\in (g(t),h(t))$, where $β(t)$ is a $T$-periodic function representing the intensity of the advection, $f(t,u)$ is a Fisher-KPP type of nonlinearity, $T$-periodic in $t$, $g(t)$ and $h(t)$ are two free boundaries satisfying Stefan conditions. This equation can be used to describe the population dynamics in time-periodic environment with advection. Its homogeneous version (that is, both $β$ and $f$ are independent of $t$) was recently studied by Gu, Lou and Zhou \cite{GLZ}. In this paper we consid…
We prove homogenization for reaction-advection-diffusion equations with KPP reactions, in the time-periodic spatially stationary ergodic setting, and find an explicit formula for the homogenized dynamic. We also extend this result to models with non-local diffusion and KPP reactions.
We show that long time solution dynamic for general reaction-advection-diffusion equations with KPP reactions is virtually linear in the following sense. Its leading order depends on the non-linear reaction only through its linearization at $u=0$, and it can also be recovered for general initial data by instead solving the PDE for restrictions of the initial condition to unit cubes on $\bbR^d$ (the latter means that non-linear interaction of these restricted solutions has only lower order effects on the overall solution dynamic). The result holds under a uniform bound on the advection coeffici…
We consider Fisher-KPP equation with advection: $u_t=u_{xx}-βu_x+f(u)$ for $x\in (g(t),h(t))$, where $g(t)$ and $h(t)$ are two free boundaries satisfying Stefan conditions. This equation is used to describe the population dynamics in advective environments. We study the influence of the advection coefficient $-β$ on the long time behavior of the solutions. We find two parameters $c_0$ and $β^*$ with $β^*>c_0>0$ which play key roles in the dynamics, here $c_0$ is the minimal speed of the traveling waves of Fisher-KPP equation. More precisely, by studying a family of the initial data $\{ σϕ\}_{σ…
This paper is devoted to the study of the asymptotic behaviors of the minimal speed of propagation of pulsating traveling fronts solving the Fisher-KPP reaction-advection-diffusion equation within either a large drift, a mixture of large drift and small reaction, or a mixture of large drift and large diffusion. We consider a periodic heterogenous framework and we use the formula of Berestycki, Hamel and Nadirashvili \cite{bhn2} for the minimal speed of propagation to prove the asymptotics in any space dimension $N.$ We express the limits as the maxima of certain variational quantities over the…
In this article, we study the growth and spread of a new species in a river network with two or three branches via the Fisher-KPP advection-diffusion equation over some simple graphs with every edge a half infinite line. We obtain a rather complete description of the long-time dynamical behavior for every case under consideration, which can be loosely described by a trichotomy (see Remark 1.7), including two different kinds of persistence states as parameters vary. The phenomenon of "persistence below carrying capacity" revealed here appears new, which does not occur in related models of the e…
In this paper, we consider a Fisher-KPP equation with an advection term and two free boundaries, which models the behavior of an invasive species in one dimension space. When spreading happens (that is, the solution converges to a positive constant), we use phase plane analysis and upper/lower solutions to prove that the rightward and leftward asymptotic spreading speeds exist, both are positive constants. Moreover, one of them is bigger and the other is smaller than the spreading speed in the corresponding problem without advection term.
We consider reaction-diffusion equations with combustion-type non-linearities in two dimensions and study speed-up of their pulsating fronts by general periodic incompressible flows with a cellular structure. We show that the occurence of front speed-up in the sense $\lim_{A\to\infty} c_*(A)=\infty$, with $A$ the amplitude of the flow and $c_*(A)$ the (minimal) front speed, only depends on the geometry of the flow and not on the reaction function. In particular, front speed-up happens for KPP reactions if and only if it does for ignition reactions. We also show that the flows which achieve thi…
In this paper, we prove via counterexamples that adding an advection term of the form Shear flow (whose streamlines are parallel to the direction of propagation) to a reaction-diffusion equation will be an enough heterogeneity to spoil the increasing behavior of the KPP speed of propagation with respect to diffusion. The non-monotonicity of the speed with respect to diffusion will occur even when the reaction term and the diffusion matrices are considered homogeneous (do not depend on space variables). For the sake of completeness, we announce our results in a setting which allows domains with…
This paper is concerned with some nonlinear propagation phenomena for reaction-advection-diffusion equations in a periodic framework. It deals with travelling wave solutions of the equation $$u_t =\nabla\cdot(A(z)\nabla u) +q(z)\cdot\nabla u+ f(z,u), t \in \mathbb{R}, z \in Ω,$$ propagating with a speed $c.$ In the case of a "combustion" nonlinearity, the speed $c$ exists and it is unique, while the front $u$ is unique up to a translation in $t.$ We give a $\min-\max$ and a $\max-\min$ formula for this speed $c.$ On the other hand, in the case of a "ZFK" or a "KPP" nonlinearity, there exists a…
We establish rigorous lower bounds on the speed of traveling fronts and on the bulk burning rate in reaction-diffusion equation with passive advection. The non-linearity is assumed to be of either KPP or ignition type. We consider two main classes of flows. Percolating flows, which are characterized by the presence of long tubes of streamlines mixing hot and cold material, lead to strong speed-up of burning which is linear in the amplitude of the flow, $U$. On the other hand the cellular flows, which have closed streamlines, are shown to produce weaker increase in reaction. For such flows we g…
Reaction-advection-diffusion equations, in periodic settings and with general type nonlinearities, admit a threshold known as the minimal speed of propagation. The minimal speed does not have an accessible formula when the nonlinearity is not of KPP type, for instance. The question becomes whether the minimal speed can be obtained through a linearization procedure or not. In this paper, we derive selection criteria for the minimal speed: a key feature of the nonlinear selection is unveiled. Moreover, we use upper/lower solution techniques in order to derive practical criteria determining the m…
This paper is concerned with some nonlinear propagation phenomena for reaction-advection-diffusion equations with Kolmogrov-Petrovsky-Piskunov (KPP) type nonlinearities in general periodic domains or in infinite cylinders with oscillating boundaries. Having a variational formula for the minimal speed of propagation involving eigenvalue problems ( proved in Berestycki, Hamel and Nadirashvili \cite{BHN1}), we consider the minimal speed of propagation as a function of diffusion factors, reaction factors and periodicity parameters. There we study the limits, the asymptotic behaviors and the variat…
We study, in dimensions $N\geq 3$, the family of first integrals of an incompressible flow: these are $H^{1}_{loc}$ functions whose level surfaces are tangent to the streamlines of the advective incompressible field. One main motivation for this study comes from earlier results proving that the existence of nontrivial first integrals of an incompressible flow $q$ is the main key that leads to a "linear speed up" by a large advection of pulsating traveling fronts solving a reaction-advection-diffusion equation in a periodic heterogeneous framework. The family of first integrals is not well unde…
We examine a general model for the Fisher-KPP (FKPP) equation with nonlocal advection. The main interpretation of this model is as describing a diffusing and logistically growing population that is also influenced by intraspecific attraction or repulsion. For a particular choice of parameters, this specializes to the Keller-Segel-Fisher equation for chemotaxis. Our interest is in the effect of chemotaxis on the speed of traveling waves. We prove that there is a threshold such that, when interactions are weaker and more localized than this, chemotaxis, despite being non-trivial, does not influe…
We consider a coupled reaction-advection-diffusion system based on the Fisher-KPP and Burgers equations. These equations serve as a one-dimensional version of a model for a reacting fluid in which the arising density differences induce a buoyancy force advecting the fluid. We study front propagation in this system through the lens of traveling waves solutions. We are able to show two quite different behaviors depending on whether the coupling constant $ρ$ is large or small. First, it is proved that there is a threshold $ρ_0$ under which the advection has no effect on the speed of traveling wav…
This paper is concerned with the existence of pulsating traveling fronts for the equation: $\partial_t u - \nabla \cdot (A(t, x)\nabla u) + q(t, x) \cdot \nabla u = f (t, x, u)$, (1) where the diffusion matrix $A$, the advection term $q$ and the reaction term $f$ are periodic in $t$ and $x$. We prove that there exist some speeds $c^*$ and $c^{**}$ such that there exists a pulsating traveling front of speed $c$ for all $c\ge c^{**}$ and that there exists no such front of speed $c<c^*$. We also give some spreading properties for front-like initial data. In the case of a KPP-type reaction term, w…
We consider the long time behavior of the solutions to the Burgers-FKPP equation with advection of a strength $β\in\mathbb{R}$. This equation exhibits a transition from pulled to pushed front behavior at $β_c=2$. We prove convergence of the solutions to a traveling wave in a reference frame centered at a position $m_β(t)$ and study the asymptotics of the front location $m_β(t)$. When $β< 2$, it has the same form as for the standard Fisher-KPP equation established by Bramson \cite{Bramson1,Bramson2}: $m_β(t) = 2t - (3/2)\log(t) + x_\infty + o(1)$ as $t\to+\infty$. This form is typical of pulled…
