In this paper, we consider a Fisher-KPP equation with an advection term and two free boundaries, which models the behavior of an invasive species in one dimension space. When spreading happens (that is, the solution converges to a positive constant), we use phase plane analysis and upper/lower solutions to prove that the rightward and leftward asymptotic spreading speeds exist, both are positive constants. Moreover, one of them is bigger and the other is smaller than the spreading speed in the corresponding problem without advection term.
In this paper, we study the dynamics of a two-species competition model with two different free boundaries in heterogeneous time-periodic environment, where the two species adopt a combination of random movement and advection upward or downward along the resource gradient. We show that the dynamics of this model can be classified into four cases, which forms a spreading-vanishing quartering. The notion of the minimal habitat size for spreading is introduced to determine if species can always spread. Rough estimates of the asymptotic spreading speed of free boundaries and the long time behavior…
We investigate a reaction-diffusion-advection equation of the form $u_t-u_{xx}+βu_x=f(u)$ $(t>0,\,0<x<h(t))$ with mixed boundary condition at $x=0$ and a free boundary condition at $x=h(t)$. Such a model may be applied to describe the dynamical process of a new or invasive species adopting a combination of random movement and advection upward or downward along the resource gradient, with the free boundary representing the expanding front. The goal of this paper is to understand the effect of advection environment and no flux across the left boundary on the dynamics of this species. When $|β|<c…
This paper aims to explore the temporal-spatial spreading and asymptotic behaviors of West Nile virus by a reaction-advection-diffusion system with free boundaries, especially considering the impact of advection term on the extinction and persistence of West Nile virus. We define the spatial-temporal risk index $R^{F}_{0}(t)$ with the advection rate and the general basic disease reproduction number $R^D_0$ to get the vanishing-spreading dichotomy regimes of West Nile virus. We show that there exists a threshold value $μ^{*}$ of the advection rate, and obtain the threshold results of it. When t…
This paper deals with a simplified SIS model, which describes the transmission of the disease in time-periodic heterogeneous environment. To understand the impact of spatial heterogeneity of environment and small advection on the persistence and eradication of an infectious disease, the left and right free boundaries are introduced to represent the expanding fronts. The basic reproduction numbers $R_0^D$ and $R_0^F(t)$, which depends on spatial heterogeneity, temporal periodicity and advection, are introduced. A spreading-vanishing dichotomy is established and sufficient conditions for the spr…
A simplified SIS reaction-diffusion-advection model is proposed and investigated to understand the impact of spatial heterogeneity of environment and advection on the persistence and eradication of an infectious disease. The free boundary is introduced to model the contact transmission at the spreading front of the disease. The behavior of positive solutions to a reaction-diffusion-advection system are discussed. The basic reproduction number $R_0^F(t)$ associated with the diseases in the spatial setting is introduced for this diffusive SIS model with the free boundary, we prove that fast diff…
This paper is devoted to the study of propagation phenomena for a Lotka-Volterra reaction-advection-diffusion competition model in a periodic habitat. We first investigate the global attractivity of a semi-trival steady state for the periodic initial value problem. Then we establish the existence of the rightward spreading speed and its coincidence with the minimal wave speed for spatially periodic rightward traveling waves. We also obtain a set of sufficient conditions for the rightward spreading speed to be linearly determinate. Finally, we apply the obtained results to a prototypical reacti…
We study two types of divergence-free fluid flows on unbounded domains in two and three dimensions -- hyperbolic and shear flows -- and their influence on chemotaxis and combustion. We show that fast spreading by these flows, when they are strong enough, can suppress growth of solutions to PDE modeling these phenomena. This includes prevention of singularity formation and global regularity of solutions to advective Patlak-Keller-Segel equations on ${\mathbb R}^2$ and ${\mathbb R}^3$, confirming numerical observations in [Khan, Johnson,Cartee and Yao, Global regularity of chemotaxis equations w…
In this series of papers, we investigate the spreading and vanishing dynamics of time almost periodic diffusive KPP equations with free boundaries. Such equations are used to characterize the spreading of a new species in time almost periodic environments with free boundaries representing the spreading fronts. In the first part of the series, we showed that a spreading-vanishing dichotomy occurs for such free boundary problems (see [16]). In this second part of the series, we investigate the spreading speeds of such free boundary problems in the case that the spreading occurs. We first prove t…
We investigate the spreading behavior of two invasive species modeled by a Lotka-Volterra diffusive competition system with two free boundaries in a spherically symmetric setting. We show that, for the weak-strong competition case, under suitable assumptions, both species in the system can successfully spread into the available environment, but their spreading speeds are different, and their population masses tend to segregate, with the slower spreading competitor having its population concentrating on an expanding ball, say Bt, and the faster spreading competitor concentrating on a spherical …
In this paper, we examine the long-time dynamics of an epidemic model whose diffusion and reaction terms involve nonlocal effects described by suitable convolution operators. The spreading front of the disease is represented by the free boundaries in the model. We show that the model is well-posed, its long-time dynamical behaviour is characterised by a spreading-vanishing dichotomy, and we also obtain sharp criteria to determine the dichotomy. Some of the nonlocal effects in the model pose extra difficulties in the mathematical treatment, which are dealt with by introducing new approaches. The…
To understand the spreading and interaction of prey and predator, in this paper we study the dynamics of the diffusive Lotka-Volterra type prey-predator model with different free boundaries. These two free boundaries, which may intersect each other as time evolves, are used to describe the spreading of prey and predator. We investigate the existence and uniqueness, regularity and uniform estimates, and long time behaviors of global solution. Some sufficient conditions for spreading and vanishing are established. When spreading occurs, we provide the more accurate limits of (u,v) as t\to\infty,…
Incorporating free boundary into time-delayed reaction-diffusion equations yields a compatible condition that guarantees the well-posedness of the initial value problem. With the KPP type nonlinearity we then establish a vanishing-spreading dichotomy result. Further, when the spreading happens, we show that the spreading speed and spreading profile are nonlinearly determined by a delay-induced nonlocal semi-wave problem. It turns out that time delay slows down the spreading speed.
This is Part 2 of our work aimed at classifying the long-time behavior of the solution to a free boundary problem with monostable reaction term in space-time periodic media. In Part 1 (see \cite{ddl}) we have established a theory on the existence and uniqueness of solutions to this free boundary problem with continuous initial functions, as well as a spreading-vanishing dichotomy. We are now able to develop the methods of Weinberger \cite{w1, w2} and others \cite{fyz,lyz,lz1,lz2,lui} to prove the existence of asymptotic spreading speed when spreading happens, without knowing a priori the exist…
We consider a reaction-diffusion-advection equation of the form: $u_t=u_{xx}-β(t)u_x+f(t,u)$ for $x\in (g(t),h(t))$, where $β(t)$ is a $T$-periodic function representing the intensity of the advection, $f(t,u)$ is a Fisher-KPP type of nonlinearity, $T$-periodic in $t$, $g(t)$ and $h(t)$ are two free boundaries satisfying Stefan conditions. This equation can be used to describe the population dynamics in time-periodic environment with advection. Its homogeneous version (that is, both $β$ and $f$ are independent of $t$) was recently studied by Gu, Lou and Zhou \cite{GLZ}. In this paper we consid…
We study the free boundary regularity of the traveling wave solutions to a degenerate advection-diffusion problem of Porous Medium type, whose existence was proved in \cite{MonsaingonNovikovRoquejoffre}. We set up a finite difference scheme allowing to compute approximate solutions and capture the free boundaries, and we carry out a numerical investigation of their regularity. Based on some nondegeneracy assumptions supported by solid numerical evidence, we prove the Lipschitz regularity of the free boundaries. Our simulations indicate that this regularity is optimal, and the free boundaries s…
We consider a class of cooperative reaction-diffusion systems with free boundaries in one space dimension, where the diffusion terms are nonlocal, given by integral operators involving suitable kernel functions, and they are allowed not to appear in some of the equations in the system. The problem is monostable in nature, resembling the well known Fisher-KPP equation. Such a system covers various models arising from mathematical biology, with the Fisher-KPP equation as the simplest special case, where a "spreading-vanishing" dichotomy is known to govern the long time dynamical behaviour. The q…
We study nonlinear diffusion problems of the form $u_t=u_{xx}+f(u)$ with free boundaries. Such problems may be used to describe the spreading of a biological or chemical species, with the free boundary representing the expanding front. For special $f(u)$ of the Fisher-KPP type, the problem was investigated by Du and Lin [8]. Here we consider much more general nonlinear terms. For any $f(u)$ which is $C^1$ and satisfies $f(0)=0$, we show that the omega limit set $ω(u)$ of every bounded positive solution is determined by a stationary solution. For monostable, bistable and combustion types of non…
The theory of traveling waves and spreading speeds is developed for time-space periodic monotone semiflows with monostable structure. By using traveling waves of the associated Poincaré maps in a strong sense, we establish the existence of time-space periodic traveling waves and spreading speeds. We then apply these abstract results to a two species competition reaction-advection-diffusion model. It turns out that the minimal wave speed exists and coincides with the single spreading speed for such a system no matter whether the spreading speed is linearly determinate. We also obtain a set of s…
This article is concerned with a system of semilinear parabolic equations with two free boundaries describing the spreading fronts of the invasive species in a mutualistic ecological model. The local existence and uniqueness of a classical solution are obtained and the asymptotic behavior of the free boundary problem is studied. Our results indicate that two free boundaries tend monotonically to finite or infinite at the same time, and the free boundary problem admits a global slow solution with unbounded free boundaries if the inter-specific competitions are strong, while if the inter-specifi…
Invasion phenomena for heterogeneous reaction-diffusion equations are contemporary and challenging questions in applied mathematics. In this paper we are interested in the question of spreading for a reaction-diffusion equation when the subdomain where the reaction term is positive is shifting/contracting at a given speed $c$. This problem arises in particular in the modelling of the impact of climate change on population dynamics. By placing ourselves in the appropriate moving frame, this leads us to consider a reaction-diffusion-advection equation with a heterogeneous in space reaction term,…
We consider Fisher-KPP equation with advection: $u_t=u_{xx}-βu_x+f(u)$ for $x\in (g(t),h(t))$, where $g(t)$ and $h(t)$ are two free boundaries satisfying Stefan conditions. This equation is used to describe the population dynamics in advective environments. We study the influence of the advection coefficient $-β$ on the long time behavior of the solutions. We find two parameters $c_0$ and $β^*$ with $β^*>c_0>0$ which play key roles in the dynamics, here $c_0$ is the minimal speed of the traveling waves of Fisher-KPP equation. More precisely, by studying a family of the initial data $\{ σϕ\}_{σ…
This paper is concerned with a Lotka-Volterra type competition model with free boundaries in time-periodic environment. One species is assumed to adopt nonlocal dispersal and the other one adopts mixed dispersal, which is a combination of both random dispersal and nonlocal dispersal. We show that this free boundary problem with more general growth functions admits a unique solution defined for all time. A spreading-vanishing dichotomy is obtained and criteria for spreading and vanishing are provided. Moreover, under the weak competition condition we provide the long-time asymptotic behavior of…
We aim to classify the long-time behavior of the solution to a free boundary problem with monostable reaction term in space-time periodic media. Such a model may be used to describe the spreading of a new or invasive species, with the free boundary representing the expanding front. In time-periodic and space homogeneous environment, as well as in space-periodic and time autonomous environment, such a problem has been studied recently in \cite{dgp, dl}. In both cases, a spreading-vanishing dichotomy has been established, and when spreading happens, the asymptotic spreading speed is proved to ex…
We consider an epidemic model with nonlocal diffusion and free boundaries, which describes the evolution of an infectious agents with nonlocal diffusion and the infected humans without diffusion, where humans get infected by the agents, and infected humans in return contribute to the growth of the agents. The model can be viewed as a nonlocal version of the free boundary model studied by Ahn, Beak and Lin \cite{ABL2016}, with its origin tracing back to Capasso et al. \cite{CP1979, CM1981}. We prove that the problem has a unique solution defined for all $t>0$, and its long-time dynamical behavi…
In Cao, Du, Li and Li [8], a nonlocal diffusion model with free boundaries extending the local diffusion model of Du and Lin [12] was introduced and studied. For Fisher-KPP type nonlinearities, its long-time dynamical behaviour is shown to follow a spreading-vanishing dichotomy. However, when spreading happens, the question of spreading speed was left open in [8]. In this paper we obtain a rather complete answer to this question. We find a condition on the kernel function such that spreading grows linearly in time exactly when this condition holds, which is achieved by completely solving the a…
This paper is concerned with the long-time dynamics of an epidemic model whose diffusion and reaction terms involve nonlocal effects described by suitable convolution operators, and the epidemic region is represented by an evolving interval enclosed by the free boundaries in the model. In Wang and Du \cite{WangDu-JDE}, it was shown that the model is well-posed, and its long-time dynamical behaviour is governed by a spreading-vanishing dichotomy. The spreading speed was investigated in a subsequent work of Wang and Du \cite{WangDu-DCDS-A}, where a threshold condition for the diffusion kernels $…
We introduce and study a class of free boundary models with "nonlocal diffusion", which are natural extensions of the free boundary models in Du and Lin [17] and elsewhere, where "local diffusion" is used to describe the population dispersal, with the free boundary representing the spreading front of the species. We show that this nonlocal problem has a unique solution defined for all time, and then examine its long-time dynamical behavior when the growth function is of Fisher-KPP type. We prove that a spreading-vanishing dichotomy holds, though for the spreading-vanishing criteria significant…
We study a class of free boundary systems with nonlocal diffusion, which are natural extensions of the corresponding free boundary problems of reaction diffusion systems. As before the free boundary represents the spreading front of the species, but here the population dispersal is described by "nonlocal diffusion" instead of "local diffusion". We prove that such a nonlocal diffusion problem with free boundary has a unique global solution, and for models with Lotka-Volterra type competition or predator-prey growth terms, we show that a spreading-vanishing dichotomy holds, and obtain criteria f…
In this paper, we study the dynamics of the ratio-dependent type prey-predator model with different free boundaries. The two free boundaries, determined by prey and predator respectively, implying that they may intersect each other as time evolves, are used to describe the spreading of prey and predator. We mainly investigate the longtime behaviors of predator and prey. Then some sufficient conditions for spreading and vanishing are given. In addition, when spreading occurs, some estimates of asymptotic spreading speeds of u, v and asymptotic speeds of h, g are provided.
In this paper we investigate a free boundary problem for the diffusive Leslie-Gower prey-predator model with double free boundaries in one space dimension. This system models the expanding of an invasive or new predator species in which the free boundaries represent expanding fronts of the predator species. We first prove the existence, uniqueness and regularity of global solution. Then provide a spreading-vanishing dichotomy, namely the predator species either successfully spreads to infinity as $t\to\infty$ at both fronts and survives in the new environment, or it spreads within a bounded ar…
We prove stochastic homogenization for reaction-advection-diffusion equations with random space-time-dependent KPP reactions with temporal correlations that are decaying in an appropriate sense. We show that the limiting homogenized dynamic has the simple form of spreading with some deterministic direction-dependent speeds from the support of the initial datum. We obtain analogous results for G-equations with random flame speeds and incompressible background advections. Important ingredients in our proofs are a non-autonomous subadditive theorem and the principle of virtual linearity for KPP r…
To study the influence of the moving front of the infected interval and the spatial movement of individuals on the spreading or vanishing of infectious disease, we consider a nonlocal SIS (susceptible-infected-susceptible) reaction-diffusion model with media coverage, hospital bed numbers and free boundaries. The principal eigenvalue of the integral operator is defined, and the impacts of the diffusion rate of infected individuals and interval length on the principal eigenvalue are analyzed. Furthermore, sufficient conditions for spreading and vanishing of the disease are derived. Our results s…
The paper deals with a West Nile virus (WNv) model, where the nonlocal diffusion is introduced to characterize a long-range dispersal, the free boundary is used to describe the spreading front, and seasonal succession accounts for the effect of the warm and cold seasons. The well-posedness of the model is firstly given, its long-term dynamical behaviours are investigated and depend on the generalized eigenvalues of the corresponding linear operator. For the spatial-independent WNv model with seasonal succession, the generalized eigenvalues are calculated and new properties are found. For the W…
We determine the asymptotic spreading speed of an invasive species, which invades the territory of a native competitor, governed by a diffusive competition model with a free boundary in a spherically symmetric setting. This free boundary problem was studied recently in [7] but only rough bounds of the spreading speed was obtained there. We show in this paper that the spreading speed has an asymptotic limit (as time goes to infnity), which is given by a certain traveling wave type system of one space dimension, called a semi-wave. This appears to be the first result that gives the precise asymp…
Striped patterns are known to bifurcate in reaction-diffusion systems with differential isotropic diffusions at a supercritical Turing instability. In this paper we study the impact of weak anisotropy by directional advection on the stability of stripes with respect to various lattice modes, and the role of quadratic terms therein. We focus on the generic form of planar reaction-diffusion systems with two components near such a bifurcation. Using centre manifold reduction we derive a rigorous parameter expansion for the critical eigenvalues for lattice mode perturbations, specifically nearly s…
It is well known that for reaction-diffusion systems with differential isotropic diffusions, a Turing instability yields striped solutions. In this paper we study the impact of weak anisotropy by directional advection on such solutions, and the role of quadratic terms. We focus on the generic form of planar reaction-diffusion systems with two components near such a bifurcation. Using Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction and Floquet-Bloch decomposition we derive a rigorous parameter expansion for existence and stability against large wavelength perturbations. This provides detailed formulae for the loci …

We develop simple diffusion-advection models to estimate the average time it takes fish to reach one of the boundaries of an enclosure and the population distribution over time moving in the enclosure (such as a lake or slough). We start with a combination of random walks and directed movement and then, from these, proceeding to the associated Partial Differential Equations and their solution. We also find the evolution of the population distribution and communities composition over time moving in the enclosure. Although this model was developed with fish movements in mind it has wide-ranging …
In this paper, we propose a novel free boundary problem to model the movement of single species with a range boundary. The spatial movement and birth/death processes of the species found within the range boundary are assumed to be governed by the classic Fisher-KPP reaction-diffusion equation, while the movement of a free boundary describing the range limit is assumed to be influenced by the weighted total population inside the range boundary and is described by an integro-differential equation. Our free boundary equation is a generalization of the classical Stefan problem that allows for nonl…
A reaction-diffusion-advection model is proposed and investigated to understand the invasive dynamics of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. The free boundary is introduced to model the expanding front of the invasive mosquitoes in a heterogenous environment. The threshold $R^D_0$ for the model with Dirichlet boundary condition is defined and the threshold $R^F_0(t)$ for the free boundary problem is introduced, and the long-time behavior of positive solutions to the reaction-diffusion-advection system is discussed. Sufficient conditions for the mosquitoes to be eradicated or to spread are given. We show…

In this paper we put forward a viral propagation model with nonlinear infection rate and free boundaries and investigate the dynamical properties. This model is composed of two ordinary differential equations and one partial differential equation, in which the spatial range of the first equation is the whole space $\mathbb{R}$, and the last two equations have free boundaries. As a new mathematical model, we prove the existence, uniqueness and uniform estimates of global solution, and provide the criteria for spreading and vanishing, and long time behavior of the solution components $u,v,w$. Co…
A mutualist model with nonlocal diffusions and a free boundary is first considered. We prove that this problem has a unique solution defined $t\ge0$, and its dynamics are governed by a spreading-vanishing dichotomy. Some criteria for spreading and vanishing are also given. Of particular importance is that we find that the solution of this problem has quite rich longtime behaviors, which vary with the conditions satisfied by kernel functions and are much different from those of the counterpart with local diffusion and free boundary. At last, we extend these results to the model with nonlocal di…
We study the effect of impermeable boundaries on the symmetry properties of a random passive scalar field advected by random flows. We focus on a broad class of nonlinear shear flows multiplied by a stationary, Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) time varying process, including some of their limiting cases, such as Gaussian white noise or plug flows. For the former case with linear shear, recent studies \cite{camassa2019symmetry} numerically demonstrated that the decaying passive scalar's long time limiting probability distribution function (PDF) could be negatively skewed in the presence of impermeable c…
Well posedness is established for a family of equations modelling particle populations undergoing delocalised coagulation, advection, inflow and outflow in a externally specified velocity field. Very general particle types are allowed while the spatial domain is a bounded region of $d$-dimensional space for which every point lies on exactly one streamline associated with the velocity field. The problem is formulated as a semi-linear ODE in the Banach space of bounded measures on particle position and type space. A local Lipschitz property is established in total variation norm for the propagat…
