In this paper, we study the dynamics of the ratio-dependent type prey-predator model with different free boundaries. The two free boundaries, determined by prey and predator respectively, implying that they may intersect each other as time evolves, are used to describe the spreading of prey and predator. We mainly investigate the longtime behaviors of predator and prey. Then some sufficient conditions for spreading and vanishing are given. In addition, when spreading occurs, some estimates of asymptotic spreading speeds of u, v and asymptotic speeds of h, g are provided.
The role of predator evasion mediated by chemical signaling is studied in a diffusive prey-predator model when prey-taxis is taken into account (model A) or not (model B) with taxis strength coefficients $χ$ and $ξ$ respectively. In the kinetic part of the models it is assumed that the rate of prey consumption includes functional responses of Holling, Bedington-DeAngelis or Crowley-Martin. Existence of global-in-time classical solutions to model A is proved in space dimension n=1 while to model B for any $n\geq 1$. The Crowley-Martin response combined with bounded rate of signal production pre…
In this article, a Leslie-Gower Holling type III predator-prey model with disease in predator has been developed from both biological and mathematical point of view. The total population is divided into three classes, namely, prey, susceptible predator and infected predator. The local stability, global stability together with sufficient conditions for persistence of the ecosystem near biologically feasible equilibria is thoroughly investigated. Boundedness and existence of the system are established. All the important analytical findings are numerically verified using program software MATLAB a…
We consider a Rosenzweig-MacArthur predator-prey system which incorporates logistic growth of the prey in the absence of predators and a Holling type II functional response for interaction between predators and preys. We assume that parameters take values in a range which guarantees that all solutions tend to a unique limit cycle and prove estimates for the maximal and minimal predator and prey population densities of this cycle. Our estimates are simple functions of the model parameters and hold for cases when the cycle exhibits small predator and prey abundances and large amplitudes. The pro…
This paper investigates a dynamical predator-prey interaction model that incorporates: (a) hunting cooperation among predators; (b) Allee effect in prey. We show all possible boundary and interior solutions. In order to analyze the stability of the solution, we make use of the Jacobian matrix and the resultant characteristic polynomial. Particularly, the sign of the eigenvalue is used to determine the stability of a solution. We then provide proof for stability of the interior solution. Finally, we verify our results numerically in MATLAB by plotting: (1) predator-prey intersection graphs; (2)…
In the present study, we have modified the traditional May-Holling-Tanner predator-prey model used to represent the interaction between least weasel and field-vole population by adding an Allee effect (strong and weak) on the field-vole population and alternative food source for the weasel population. It is shown that the dynamic is different from the original May-Holling-Tanner predator-prey interaction since new equilibrium points have appeared in the first quadrant. Moreover, the modified model allows the extinction of both species when the Allee effect (strong and weak) on the prey is incl…
In this paper, we proposed a population model depicting the dynamics of a prey species showing group defence against a generalist predator. The group defence characteristic is represented by a non-monotonic functional response. We have established the local stability of the model around the co-existent equilibrium solution using a local Lyapunov function. Condition for existence Hopf bifurcation is obtained along with its normal form. Numerical simulations have been done to confirm the obtained analytical results as well as to validate the proposed model. Sensitivity analysis of the parameters…
We study the Bazykin predator-prey model with predator intraspecific interactions and ratio-dependent functional response and show the existence and stability of two interior equilibrium points. We prove that the model displays a wide range of different bifurcations, such as saddle-node bifurcations, Hopf bifurcations, homoclinic bifurcations and Bogdanov-Takens bifurcations. We use numerical simulations to further illustrate the impact changing the predator per capita consumption rate has on the basin of attraction of the stable equilibrium points, as well as the impact of changing the effici…
A generalized seasonally-varying predator-prey model with Allee effect in the prey growth is investigated. The analysis is performed only on the basis of some properties determining the shape of the prey growth rate and the trophic interaction functions. General conditions for coexistence are determined, both in the case of weak and strong Allee effect. Finally, a modified Leslie-Gower predator-prey model with Allee effect is investigated. Numerical results illustrate the qualitative behaviors of the system, in particular the presence of periodic orbits.
We discuss the stability and bifurcation analysis for a predator-prey system with non-linear Michaelis-Menten prey harvesting. The existence and stability of possible equilibria are investigated. We provide rigorous mathematical proofs for the existence of Hopf and saddle node bifurcations. We prove that the system exhibits Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation of codimension two, calculating the normal form. We provide several numerical simulations to illustrate our theoretical findings.
Foraging movements of predator play an important role in population dynamics of prey-predator interactions, which have been considered as mechanisms that contribute to spatial self-organization of prey and predator. In nature, there are many examples of prey-predator interactions where prey is immobile while predator disperses between patches non-randomly through different factors such as stimuli following the encounter of a prey. In this work, we formulate a Rosenzweig-MacArthur prey-predator two patch model with mobility only in predator and the assumption that predators move towards patches…
The dynamics of a prey-predator system with foraging facilitation among predators are investigated. The analysis involves the computation of many semi-algebraic systems of large degrees. We apply the pseudo-division reduction, real-root isolation technique and complete discrimination system of polynomial to obtain parameter conditions for the exact number of equilibria and their qualitative properties as well as a complete investigation of bifurcations including saddle-node, transcritical, pitchfork, Hopf and Bogdanov-Takens bifurcations. Moreover, numerical simulations are presented to suppor…
A predator-prey model with functional response Holling type II, Allee effect in the prey and a generalist predator is considered. It is shown that the model with strong Allee effect has at most two positive equilibrium point in the first quadrant, one is always a saddle point and the other exhibits multi-stability phenomenon since the equilibrium point can be stable or unstable. While the model with weak Allee effect has at most three positive equilibrium point in the first quadrant, one is always a saddle point and the other two can be stable or unstable node. In addition, when the parameters…
A general diffusive predator-prey model is investigated in this paper. We prove the global attractivity of constant equilibria when the conversion rate is small, and the non-existence of non-constant positive steady states when the conversion rate is large. The results are applied to several predator-prey models and give some ranges of parameters where complex pattern formation cannot occur.
A diffusive predator-prey system with predator interference and Neumann boundary conditions is considered in this paper. We derive some results on the existence and nonexistence of nonconstant stationary solutions. It is shown that there exist no nonconstant stationary solutions when the effect of the predator interference is strong or the conversion rate of the predator is large, and nonconstant stationary solutions emerge when the diffusion rate of the predator is large.
In this paper we present analytical solution of a fractional order predator-prey model, where prey grows logistically and predation occurs following type II response function, by homotopy perturbation method. Numerical solutions are presented to illustrate different particular cases. Our computational results show that accurate solution may be obtained with few iterations.
The diffusive Holling-Tanner predator-prey model with no-flux boundary conditions and nonlocal prey competition is considered in this paper. We show the existence of spatial nonhomogeneous periodic solutions, which is induced by nonlocal prey competition. In particular, the constant positive steady state can lose the stability through Hopf bifurcation when the given parameter passes through some critical values, and the bifurcating periodic solutions near such values can be spatially nonhomogeneous and orbitally asymptotically stable. This phenomenon is different from that in models without no…
Generalist predators consist an important component of an ecosystem which may act as a biocontrol agent and influence the dynamics significantly. In this paper, we have studied the effect of delayed logistic growth of the prey species with group defence behaviour. The Lyapunov stability criteria for the interior equilibrium point is derived. Also, the condition of Hopf-bifurcation and the point of bifurcation are obtained. The length of the delay is also estimated for the system to preserve stability. Numerical simulations are performed and illustrated to support the obtained analytical result…
The population dynamics of predator-prey systems in the presence of patch-specific predators are explored in a setting where the prey population has access to both habitats. The emphasis is in situations where patch-prey abundance drives prey-dispersal between patches, with the fragile prey populations, that is, populations subject to the Allee effect. The resulting four-dimensional model's mathematical analysis is carried out via sub-models that focus in lower dimensional settings. The outcomes depend on, and in fact they are quite sensitive to, the structure of the system, the range of param…
A four dimensional ecoepidemiological model consisting of susceptible prey, infected prey, vaccinated prey and predator is formulated and analyzed in the present work. The functional response is assumed to be of Lotka-Volterra type. We studied systematically the behavior of the model with and without disease in prey. We analyzed mathematically the dynamics of the system such as boundedness of the solutions, existence and stability conditions of equilibria. The basic reproduction number \mathcal{R}_0 for the proposed model is computed. Disease is endemic if \mathcal{R}_0>1. Numerical simulation…
In this paper we consider a family of system with 2 predators feeding on one prey. We show how to construct a positively invariant set in which it is possible to define a Poincaré map for examining the behaviour of the system, mainly in the case when both predators survive. We relate it to examples from earlier works.
Following the well-extablished mathematical approach to persistence and its recent developments we give a rigorous theoretical explanation to the numerical results obtained for a certain prey-predator model with functional response of Holling type II equipped with an infectious disease in the predator population. The proof relies on some repelling conditions that can be applied in an iterative way on a suitable decomposition of the boundary. A full stability analysis is developed, showing how the "invasion condition" for the disease is derived. Some counterexamples and possible further investi…
We propose and study a two patch Rosenzweig-MacArthur prey-predator model with immobile prey and predator using two dispersal strategies. The first dispersal strategy is driven by the prey-predator interaction strength, and the second dispersal is prompted by the local population density of predators which is referred as the passive dispersal. The dispersal strategies using by predator are measured by the proportion of the predator population using the passive dispersal strategy which is a parameter ranging from 0 to 1. We focus on how the dispersal strategies and the related dispersal strengt…
We study a predator-prey model with Holling type I functional response, an alternative food source for the predator, and multiple Allee effects on the prey. We show that the model has at most two equilibrium points in the first quadrant, one is always a saddle point while the other can be a repeller or an attractor. Moreover, there is always a stable equilibrium point that corresponds to the persistence of the predator population and the extinction of the prey population. Additionally, we show that when the parameters are varied the model displays a wide range of different bifurcations, such a…
A delayed, discrete-time, prey-predator model with Allee effects imposed on prey and predator populations is defined, and dynamics of the system is characterized computationally. The parametric conditions for local asymptotic stability of equilibria are investigated with several illustrating examples. In addition, several periodic solutions were achieved. Furthermore, high degree of fractality of the prey-predator population trajectories is observed when the system is sufficiently delayed. This system has turned out to be a cooperative system, which is depicted using fractal dimension.
In this note we present a study of the solutions associated to a particular spatial extension of the Rosenzweig-MacArthur model for predator and prey. The analysis presented here shows that positive steady state solutions emerge via a transcritical bifurcation mechanism, in accordance with the insight obtained from previous numerical and analytical results. In the model under discussion, prey is assumed to move avoiding crowds via a density-dependent diffusion and also incorporates the existence of a refuge zone, where predators cannot consume prey. Saturation in prey consumption is also inclu…
We consider a nonautonomous eco-epidemiological model with general functions for predation on infected and uninfected preys as well as general functions associated to the vital dynamics of the susceptible prey and predator populations. We obtain persistence and extinction results for the infected prey based on assumptions on systems related to the dynamics in the absence of infected preys. We apply our results to eco-epidemiological models constructed from predator-prey models existent in the literature. Some illustrative simulation is undertaken.
This paper deals with a free boundary problem of the Lotka-Volterra type prey-predator model with variable intrinsic growth rate for predator over a one dimensional habitat, in which the free boundary represents the spreading front and is caused only by the prey. In this problem it is assumed that the species can only invade further into the new environment from the right end of the initial region, and the spreading front expands at a speed that is proportional to the prey's population gradient at the front. Moreover, the variable intrinsic growth rate $r(t,x)$ is positive in pointwise but may…
A reaction-diffusion-advection predator-prey model with Holling type-II predator functional response is considered. We show the stability/instability of the positive steady state and the existence of a Hopf bifurcation when the diffusion and advection rates are large. Moreover, we show that advection rate can affect not only the occurrence of Hopf bifurcations but also the values of Hopf bifurcations.
We examine the interaction of transcritical and saddle-node bifurcations in a predator-prey-nutrient system that is stressed by the presence of a toxicant affecting the prey. This model, formulated by Kooi et al. ({\sl Ecol. Model.} {\bf 212}(2008), 304--318), has a two-dimensional invariant sub system with zero predator density. In the sub system, a pair of prey-nutrient equilibria is created in a saddle-node bifurcation, while predator invasion in modelled by a transcritical bifurcation of one of this pair. Interactions of these bifurcations at codimension-two points give rise to bistable, p…
In this paper, we suggest two ways of modifications, which seem natural: a) we will introduce sponsors/hunters of predators or/and preys with "license" for constant rate of sponsoring/hunting (regular external fluxes); b) we will introduce noise of kinetic coefficients.
This paper deals with ratio-dependent predator-prey systems with delay. We will investigate under what conditions delay cannot cause instability in higher dimension. We give an example when delay causes instability.
We consider the Leslie's prey-predator model with discrete-time. This model is given by a non-linear evolution operator depending on five parameters. We show that this operator has two fixed points and define type of each fixed point depending on the parameters. Finding two invariant sets of the evolution operator we study the dynamical systems generated by the operator on each invariant set. Depending on the parameters we classify the dynamics between a predator and a prey of the Leslie's model.
In this manuscript, we consider temporal and spatio-temporal modified Holling-Tanner predator-prey models with predator-prey growth rate as a logistic type, Holling type II functional response and alternative food sources for the predator. From our result of the temporal model, we identify regions in parameter space in which Turing instability in the spatio-temporal model is expected and we show numerical evidence where the Turing instability leads to spatio-temporal periodic solutions. Subsequently, we analyse these instabilities. We use simulations to illustrate the behaviour of both the tem…
Recently, a piecewise smooth differential system was derived as a model of a 1 predator-2 prey interaction where the predator feeds adaptively on its preferred prey and an alternative prey. In such a model, strong evidence of chaotic behavior was numerically found. Here, we revisit this model and prove the existence of a Shilnikov sliding connection when the parameters are taken in a codimension one submanifold of the parameter space. As a consequence of this connection, we conclude, analytically, that the model behaves chaotically for an open region of the parameter space.
The goal of this paper is to explain how to derive the classical Rosenzweig-MacArthur's model by using a model with two groups of predators in which we can separate the vital dynamic and consumption of prey to describe the behavior of the predators. This will be especially very convenient if we want to add an age or size structure to the predator population. As mentioned by Holling (without mathematical model), we divide the population of predators into the searching and the handling predators. In this article we study some properties of this model and conclude the paper proving that the model…
The transition between strong and weak Allee effects in prey provides a simple regime shift in ecology. A deteriorating environment changes weak Allee effects into strong ones. In this paper, we study the interplay between the functional response of Holling type IV and both strong and weak Allee effects. The model investigated here presents complex dynamics and high codimension bifurcations. In particular, nilpotent cusp bifurcation, nilpotent saddle bifurcation and degenerate Hopf bifurcation of codimension 3 are completely analyzed, and the existence of homoclinic and heteroclinic loops are …
We study a modified version of a prey-predator system with modified Leslie-Gower and Holling type II functional response studied by M.A. Aziz-Alaoui and M. Daher-Okiye. The modification consists in incorporating a refuge for preys, and substantially complicates the dynamics of the system. We study the local and global dynamics and the existence of cycles. We also investigate conditions for extinction or existence of a stationary distribution, in the case of a stochastic perturbation of the system.
In this paper we provide an elementary proof of the existence of canard solutions for a class of singularly perturbed predator-prey planar systems in which there occurs a transcritical bifurcation of quasi steady states. The proof uses a one-dimensional theory of canard solutions developed by V. F. Butuzov, N. N. Nefedov and K. R. Schneider, and an appropriate monotonicity assumption on the vector field to extend it to the two-dimensional case. The result is applied to identify all possible predator-prey models with quadratic vector fields allowing for the existence of canard solutions.
In this paper we investigate a free boundary problem for a predator-prey model with double free boundaries in one space dimension. This system models the expanding of an invasive or new predator species in which the free boundaries represent expanding fronts of the predator species and are described by Stefan-like condition. We prove a spreading-vanishing dichotomy for this model, namely the predator species either successfully spreads to infinity as $t\to \infty$ at both fronts and survives in the new environment, or it fails to establish and dies out in the long run while the prey species st…
Various field and laboratory experiments show that prey refuge plays a significant role in the stability of prey-predator dynamics. On the other hand, theoretical studies show that delayed system exhibits a much more realistic dynamics than its non-delayed counterpart. In this paper, we study a multi-delayed prey-predator model with prey refuge. We consider modified Holling Type II response function that incorporates the effect of prey refuge and then introduce two discrete delays in the model system. A negative feedback delay is considered in the logistic prey growth rate to represent density…
This paper is devoted to the study of a predator-prey model with predator-age structure that involves Michaelis-Menten type ratio-dependent functional response. We study some dynamical properties of the model by using the theory of integrated semigroup and the Hopf bifurcation theory for semilinear equations with non-dense domain. The existence of Hopf bifurcation is established by regarding the biological maturation period $τ$ as the bifurcation parameter. The computer simulations and sensitivity analysis on parameters are also performed to illustrate the conclusions.
We investigate a diffusive predator-prey model by incorporating the fear effect into prey population, since the fear of predators could visibly reduce the reproduction of prey. By introducing the mature delay as bifurcation parameter, we find this makes the predator-prey system more complicated and usually induces Hopf and Hopf-Hopf bifurcations. The formulas determining the properties of Hopf and Hopf-Hopf bifurcations by computing the normal form on the center manifold are given. Near the Hopf-Hopf bifurcation point we give the detailed bifurcation set by investigating the universal unfoldin…
We propose and investigate a discrete-time predator-prey system with cooperative hunting in the predator population. The model is constructed from the classical Nicholson-Bailey host-parasitoid system with density dependent growth rate. A sufficient condition based on the model parameters for which both populations can coexist is derived, namely that the predator's maximal reproductive number exceeds one. We study existence of interior steady states and their stability in certain parameter regimes. It is shown that the system behaves asymptotically similar to the model with no cooperative hunt…
We construct a global bifurcation diagram of the plane differential system $$ {l} \dot x = x(1-x)-x y/(a+x^2), \dot y = y(δ-βy/x), x(t)>0, y(t)>0, a>0, δ>0, β>0, $$ which describes the predator-prey interaction.
In this paper, the dynamical behaviors of a Leslie-Gower predator-prey model with Allee effect and fear effect are studied. First, we use Blow-Up method to explore the stability of the original point. Analyze the local stability of the non-negative equilibriums of the system. Taking the growth rate of predators as the Hopf bifurcation parameters. And give the condition of the model Hopf bifurcation. Using the method of calculating the first Lyapunov coefficient to discuss the direction of the Hopf bifurcation near the weak center.
We analyse a modified May-Holling-Tanner predator-prey model considering an Allee effect in the prey and alternative food sources for predator. Additionally, the predation functional response or predation consumption rate is linear. The extended model exhibits rich dynamics and we prove the existence of separatrices in the phase plane separating basins of attraction related to oscillation, co-existence and extinction of the predator-prey population. We also show the existence of a homoclinic curve that degenerates to form a limit cycle and discuss numerous potential bifurcations such as saddle…
We show that a number of models in virus dynamics, epidemiology and plant biology can be presented as ``damped" versions of the Lotka-Volterra predator-prey model, by analogy to the damped harmonic oscillator. The analogy deepens with the use of Lyapunov functions, which allow us to characterize their dynamics and even make some estimates.
We consider a stochastic individual based model where each predator searches during a random time and then manipulates its prey or rests. The time distributions may be non-exponential. An age structure allows to describe these interactions and get a Markovian setting. The process is characterized by a measure-valued stochastic differential equation. We prove averaging results in this infinite dimensional setting and get the convergence of the slow-fast macroscopic prey predator process to a two dimensional dynamical system. We recover classical functional responses. We also get new forms arisi…
