A left ideal of any C*-algebra is an example of an operator algebra with a right contractive approximate identity (r.c.a.i.). Conversely, we show here and in a `pre-quel' to this paper [B], that operator algebras with r.c.a.i. should be studied in terms of a certain left ideal of a C*-algebra. We study operator algebras and their multiplier algebras from the perspective of `Hamana theory' and using the multiplier algebras introduced by the first author.
In this paper we study the C*-envelope of the (non-self-adjoint) tensor algebra associated via subproduct systems to a finite irreducible stochastic matrix $P$. Firstly, we identify the boundary representations of the tensor algebra inside the Toeplitz algebra, also known as its non-commutative Choquet boundary. As an application, we provide examples of C*-envelopes that are not *-isomorphic to either the Toeplitz algebra or the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra. This characterization required a new proof for the fact that the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra associated to $P$ is isomorphic to $C(\mathbb{T}, M_d(\ma…
We show that the $\ca$-envelope of the tensor algebra of an arbitrary $\ca$-correspondence $\X$ coincides with the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra $Ø_{\X}$, as defined by Katsura \cite{Ka}. This improves earlier results of Muhly and Solel and Fowler, Muhly and Raeburn, who came to the same conclusion under the additional hypothesis that $\X$ is strict and faithful.
Given an arbitrary countable directed graph $G$ we prove the C*-envelope of the tensor algebra $T_+(G)$ coincides with the universal Cuntz-Krieger algebra associated with $G$. Our approach is concrete in nature and does not rely on Hilbert module machinery. We show how our results extend to the case of higher rank graphs, where an analogous result is obtained for the tensor algebra of a row-finite $k$-graph with no sources.
We give several conditions on certain families of Douglas algebras that imply that the minimal envelope of the given algebra is the algebra itself. We also prove that the minimal envelope of the intersection of two Douglas algebras is the intersection of their minimal envelope.
Let $\A$ be a unital operator algebra and let $α$ be an automorphism of $\A$ that extends to a *-automorphism of its $\ca$-envelope $\cenv (\A)$. In this paper we introduce the isometric semicrossed product $\A \times_α^{\is} \bbZ^+ $ and we show that $\cenv(\A \times_α^{\is} \bbZ^+) \simeq \cenv (\A) \times_α \bbZ$. In contrast, the $\ca$-envelope of the familiar contractive semicrossed product $\A \times_α \bbZ^+ $ may not equal $\cenv (\A) \times_α \bbZ$. Our main tool for calculating $\ca$-envelopes for semicrossed products is the concept of a relative semicrossed product of an operator al…
We consider the ideal structure of a reduced crossed product of a unital $C^*$-algebra equipped with an action of a discrete group. More specifically we find sufficient and necessary conditions for the group action to have the intersection property, meaning that non-zero ideals in the reduced crossed product restrict to non-zero ideals in the underlying $C^*$-algebra. We show that the intersection property of a group action on a $C^*$-algebra is equivalent to the intersection property of the action on the equivariant injective envelope. We also show that the centre of the equivariant injective…
We explicitly compute certain Douglas algebras that are invariant under both the Bourgain map and the minimal envelope map. We also compute the Bourgain algebra and the minimal envelope of the maximal subalgebras of a certain singly generated Douglas algebra.
We describe the envelope C*-algebra associated to a partial action of a countable discrete group on a locally compact space as a groupoid C*-algebra (more precisely as a C*-algebra from an equivalence relation) and we use our approach to show that, for a large class of partial actions of Z on the Cantor set, the envelope C*-algebra is an AF-algebra. We also completely characterize partial actions of a countable discrete group on a compact space such that the envelope action acts in a Hausdorff space.
We determine the injective envelope and local multiplier algebra of a continuous trace C*-algebra that arises from a continuous Hilbert bundle over an arbitrary locally compact Hausdorff space. In addition, we show that the second-order local multiplier algebra of any such algebra is injective.
We show that for a class of operator algebras satisfying a natural condition the $C^*$-envelope of the universal free product of operator algebras $A_i$ is given by the free product of the $C^*$-envelopes of the $A_i$. We apply this theorem to, in special cases, the $C^*$-envelope of the semicrossed products for multivariable dynamics in terms of the single variable semicrossed products of Peters.
A precise description of the injective envelope of a spatial continuous trace C*-algebra A over a Stonean space Delta is given. The description is based on the notion of a weakly continuous Hilbert bundle, which we show to be a Kaplansky--Hilbert module over the abelian AW*-algebra C(Delta). We then use the description of the injective envelope of A to study the first- and second-order local multiplier algebras of A. In particular, we show that the second-order local multiplier algebra of A is precisely the injective envelope of A.
We give a new very concrete description of the C*-envelope of the tensor algebra associated to multivariable dynamical system. In the surjective case, this C*-envelope is described as a crossed product by an endomorphism, and as a groupoid C*-algebra. In the non-surjective case, it is a full corner of a such an algebra. We also show that when the space is compact, then the C*-envelope is simple if and only if the system is minimal.
This paper is a continuation of the program started by Ruan in 2003, of developing real operator space theory. In particular, we develop the theory of real operator algebras. We also show among other things that the injective envelope, C*-envelope and non-commutative Shilov boundary exist for a real operator space. We develop real one-sided M-ideal theory and characterize one-sided M-ideals in real C*-algebras and real operator algebras with contractive approximate identity.
The C*-envelope of the limit algebra (or limit space) of a contractive regular system of digraph algebras (or digraph spaces) is shown to be an approximately finite C*-algebra and the direct system for the C*-envelope is determined explicitly.
In this paper we give a criterion for an ideal of a TAF algebra to be meet irreducible. We show that an ideal $J$ of $A$ is meet irreducile if and only if the C$^*$-envelope of the quotient $A/J$ is primitive. In that case, A/J admits a nest representation which extends to a *-representation of the C$^*$-envelope for $A/J.$ We also characterize the meet irreducible ideals as the kernels of nest representations; this settles the question of whether the n-primitive and meet irreducible ideals coincide.
A cosystem consists of a possibly nonselfadoint operator algebra equipped with a coaction by a discrete group. We introduce the concept of C*-envelope for a cosystem; roughly speaking, this is the smallest C*-algebraic cosystem that contains an equivariant completely isometric copy of the original one. We show that the C*-envelope for a cosystem always exists and we explain how it relates to the usual C*-envelope. We then show that for compactly aligned product systems over group-embeddable right LCM semigroups, the C*-envelope is co-universal, in the sense of Carlsen, Larsen, Sims and Vittade…
A new C*-enlargement of a C*-algebra $A$ nested between the local multiplier algebra $M_{\text{loc}}(A)$ of $A$ and its injective envelope $I(A)$ is introduced. Various aspects of this maximal C*-algebra of quotients, $Q_{\text{max}}(A)$, are studied, notably in the setting of AW*-algebras. As a by-product we obtain a new example of a type I C*-algebra $A$ such that $M_{\text{loc}}(M_{\text{loc}}(A))\ne M_{\text{loc}}(A)$.
In this paper, we construct, for a certain class of semigroup dynamical systems, two operator algebras that are universal with respect to their corresponding covariance conditions: one being self-adjoint, and another being non-self-adjoint. We prove that the $C^*$-envelope of the non-self-adjoint operator algebra is precisely the self-adjoint one. This result leads to a number of new examples of operator algebras and their $C^*$-envelopes, with many from number fields and commutative rings. We further establish the functoriality of these operator algebras along with their applications.
Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a C*-algebra and $α:\mathcal{C} \rightarrow \mathcal{C}$ a unital *-endomorphism. There is a natural way to construct operator algebras which are called semicrossed products, using a convolution induced by the action of $α$ on $\mathcal{C}$. We show that the C*-envelope of a semicrossed product is (a full corner of) a crossed product. As a consequence, we get that, when $α$ is *-injective, the semicrossed products are completely isometrically isomorphic and share the same C*-envelope, the crossed product $\mathcal{C}_\infty \rtimes_{α_\infty} \mathbb{Z}$. We show that mini…
We examine the semicrossed products of a semigroup action by $*$-endomorphisms on a C*-algebra, or more generally of an action on an arbitrary operator algebra by completely contractive endomorphisms. The choice of allowable representations affects the corresponding universal algebra. We seek quite general conditions which will allow us to show that the C*-envelope of the semicrossed product is (a full corner of) a crossed product of an auxiliary C*-algebra by a group action. Our analysis concerns a case-by-case dilation theory on covariant pairs. In the process we determine the C*-envelope fo…
We continue the study of r-ideals, l-ideals, and HSA's in operator algebras. Some applications are made to the structure of operator algebras, including Wedderburn type theorems for a class of operator algebras. We also consider the one-sided $M$-ideal structure of certain tensor products of operator algebras.
A notion of partial ideal for an operator algebra is a weakening the notion of ideal where the defining algebraic conditions are enforced only in the commutative subalgebras. We show that, in a von Neumann algebra, the ultraweakly closed two-sided ideals, which we call total ideals, correspond to the unitarily invariant partial ideals. The result also admits an equivalent formulation in terms of central projections. We place this result in the context of an investigation into notions of spectrum of noncommutative $C^*$-algebras.
This paper studies injective envelopes of groupoid dynamical systems and the corresponding boundaries. Analogue to the group case, we associate a bundle of compact Hausdorff spaces to any (discrete) groupoid (the Hamana boundary of the groupoid). We study bundles of compact topological spaces equipped with an action of a groupoid. We show that any groupoid has a minimal boundary (the Furstenberg boundary of the groupoid). We prove that the Hamana and Furstenberg boundaries are the same, for (discrete) groupoids. We find the relation between the reduced crossed product of the $\G$-injective env…
We characterize the ideal of continuous-trace elements in a separable transformation-group $C^{*}$-algebra $C_0(X)\times G$. In addition, we identify the largest Fell ideal, the largest liminal ideal and the largest postliminal ideal.
A $C^{*}$-algebra $A$ has ideal property if any ideal $I$ of $A$ is generated as a closed two sided ideal by the projections inside the ideal. Suppose that the limit $C^{*}$-algebra $A$ of inductive limit of direct sums of matrix algebras over spaces with uniformly bounded dimension has ideal property. In this paper, we will prove that $A$ can be written as an inductive limit of certain very special subhomogeneous algebras, namely, direct sum of dimension drop interval algebras and matrix algebras over 2-dimensional spaces with torsion $H^{2}$ groups.
The notion of Fréchet locally $C^*$-algebra generalizes the notion of $C^*$-algebra. In this paper, we first present some definitions and basic facts about locally $C^*$-algebra, and then we introduce and study the notion of ideal and weak amenability for these algebras. Also, we show that every Fréchet locally $C^*$-algebra is ideally amenable.
We take a new look at dilation theory for nonself-adjoint operator algebras. Among the extremal (co)extensions of a representation, there is a special property of being fully extremal. This allows a refinement of some of the classical notions which are important when one moves away from standard examples. We show that many algebras including graph algebras and tensor algebras of C*-correspondences have the semi-Dirichlet property which collapses these notions and explains why they have a better dilation theory. This leads to variations of the notions of commutant lifting and Ando's theorem. Th…
A left ideal of any $C^*$-algebra is an example of an operator algebra with a right contractive approximate identity (r.c.a.i.). Indeed left ideals in $C^*$-algebras may be characterized as the class of such operator algebras, which happen also to be triple systems. Conversely, we show here and in a sequel to this paper, that operator algebras with r.c.a.i. should be studied in terms of a certain left ideal of a $C^*$-algebra. We study left ideals from the perspective of `Hamana theory' and using the multiplier algebras introduced by the author. More generally, we develop some general theory f…
We consider three quantum algebras: the q-oscillator algebra, the Podles' sphere and the q-deformed enveloping algebra of $su(2).$ To each of these *-algebras we associate certain partial dynamical system and perform the "Mackey analysis" of *-representations developed in [SS]. As a result we get the description of "standard" irreducible *-representations. Further, for each of these examples we show the existence of a "$C^*$-envelope" which is canonically isomorphic to the covariance $C^*$-algebra of the partial dynamical system. Finally, for the q-oscillator algebra and the q-deformed $\cU(su…
In this article, we show that the $C^*$-envelope of the minimal tensor product of two operator systems is isomorphic to the minimal tensor product of their $C^*$-envelopes. We do this by identifying the Silov boundary ideal of the minimal tensor product of two operator systems. Finally, as an application of this result, we show that the propagation number of the minimal tensor product of operator systems is the maximum of the propagation numbers of the factors.
Let $(G, P)$ be an abelian, lattice ordered group and let $X$ be a compactly aligned product system over $P$. We show that the C*-envelope of the Nica tensor algebra $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{T}^+_X$ coincides with both Sehnem's covariance algebra $\mathcal{A} \times_X P$ and the co-universal C*-algebra $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{O}^r_X$ for injective, gauge compatible, Nica-covariant representations of Carlsen, Larsen, Sims and Vittadello. We give several applications of this result on both the selfadjoint and non-selfadjoint operator algebra theory. First we guarantee the existence of $\mathcal{N}\math…
Given a unital C*-subalgebra of B(H), we study the set of all possible images of its injective envelope that are contained in B(H) and their position relative to the double commutant of the algebra in order to obtain more information about the existence or non-existence of weak expectations. We study the subset of B(H) that is the intersection of all possible images of the injective envelope and show that it is simultaneously a reflexive cover and a new type of order completion of the algebra.
Let $P$ be a submonoid of a group $G$ and let $\mathcal{E}=(\mathcal{E}_p)_{p\in P}$ be a product system over $P$ with coefficient C*-algebra $A$. We show that the following C*-algebras are canonically isomorphic: the C*-envelope of the tensor algebra $\mathcal{T}_λ(\mathcal{E})^+$ of $\mathcal{E}$; the reduced cross sectional C*-algebra of the Fell bundle associated to the canonical coaction of $G$ on the covariance algebra $A\times_{\mathcal{E}}P$ of $\mathcal{E}$; and the C*-envelope of the cosystem obtained by restricting the canonical gauge coaction on $\mathcal{T}_λ(\mathcal{E})$ to the …
A semicrossed product is a non-selfadjoint operator algebra encoding the action of a semigroup on an operator or C*-algebra. We prove that, when the positive cone of a discrete lattice ordered abelian group acts on a C*-algebra, the C*-envelope of the associated semicrossed product is a full corner of a crossed product by the whole group. By constructing a C*-cover that itself is a full corner of a crossed product, and computing the Shilov ideal, we obtain an explicit description of the C*-envelope. This generalizes a result of Davidson, Fuller, and Kakariadis from $\mathbb{Z}_+^n$ to the clas…
Let $X$ be compact Hausdorff, and $ϕ: X \to X$ a continuous surjection. Let $\mathcal{A}$ be the semicrossed product algebra corresponding to the relation $fU = Uf\circ ϕ$. Then the C$^*$-envelope of $\mathcal{A}$ is the crossed product of a commutative C$^*$-algebra which contains $C(X)$ as a subalgebra, with respect to a homeomorphism which we construct. We also show there are``sufficiently many'' nest representations.
Let $X$ be compact Hausdorff, and $ϕ: X \to X$ a continuous surjection. Let $\mathcal{A}$ be the semicrossed product algebra corresponding to the relation fU = Uf\circ ϕ$ or to the relation $Uf = f\circ ϕU.$ Then the C$^*$-envelope of $\mathcal{A}$ is the crossed product of a commutative C$^*$-algebra which contains $C(X)$ as a subalgebra, with respect to a homeomorphism which we construct. We also show there are"sufficiently many" nest representations.
We study the issue of issue of purity (as a completely positive linear map) for identity maps on operators systems and for their completely isometric embeddings into their C$^*$-envelopes and injective envelopes. Our most general result states that the canonical embedding of an operator system $\mathcal R$ into its injective envelope $\mathcal I(\mathcal R)$ is pure if and only if the C$^*$-envelope of $\mathcal R$ is a prime C$^*$-algebra. To prove this, we also show that the identity map on any AW$^*$-factor is a pure completely positive linear map. For embeddings of operator systems into th…
Let $\sS$ be a countable, abelian semigroup of continuous surjections on a compact metric space $X$. Corresponding to this dynamical system we associate two operator algebras, the tensor algebra, and the semicrossed product. There is a unique smallest C$^*$-algebra into which an operator algebra is completely isometrically embedded, which is the C$^*$-envelope. We provide two distinct characterizations of the C$^*$-envelope of the tensor algebra; one developed in a general setting by Katsura, and the other using tools of projective and inductive limits, which gives the C$^*$-envelope as a cros…
In this paper we consider we study various classical operator ideals (for instance, the ideals of strictly (co)singular, weakly compact, Dunford-Pettis operators) either on $C^*$-algebras, or preduals of von Neumann algebras.
We study the ideal structure of $C^*$-algebras arising from $C^*$-correspondences. We prove that gauge-invariant ideals of our $C^*$-algebras are parameterized by certain pairs of ideals of original $C^*$-algebras. We show that our $C^*$-algebras have a nice property which should be possessed by generalization of crossed products. Applications to crossed products by Hilbert $C^*$-bimodules and relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebras are also discussed.
The study of different types of ideals in non self-adjoint operator algebras has been a topic of recent research. This study focuses on principal ideals in subalgebras of groupoid C*-algebras. An ideal is said to be principal if it is generated by a single element of the algebra. We look at subalgebras of r-discrete principal groupoid C*-algebras and prove that these algebras are principal ideal algebras. Regular canonical subalgebras of almost finite C*-algebras have digraph algebras as their building blocks. The spectrum of almost finite C*-algebras has the structure of an r-discrete princip…
We give a complete description of the primitive ideal space of the C*-algebra associated to the ring of integers R in a number field K as considered in a recent paper by Cuntz, Deninger and Laca.
Various questions on Lie ideals of C*-algebras are investigated. They fall roughly under the following topics: relation of Lie ideals to closed two-sided ideals; Lie ideals spanned by special classes of elements such as commutators, nilpotents, and the range of polynomials; characterization of Lie ideals as similarity invariant subspaces.
In this paper, we consider $\text{C}^*$-algebras with the ideal property (the ideal property unifies the simple and real rank zero cases). We define two categories related the invariants of the $\text{C}^*$-algebras with the ideal property. And we showed that these two categories are in fact isomorphic. As a consequence, the Elliott's Invariant and the Stevens' Invariant are isomorphic for $\text{C}^*$-algebras with the ideal property.
For $C^*$-algebras $A$ and $B$, we prove the slice map conjecture for ideals in the operator space projective tensor product $A \hat\otimes B$. As an application, a characterization of prime ideals in the Banach $\ast$-algebra $A\hat\otimes B$ is obtained. Further, we study the primitive ideals, modular ideals and the maximal modular ideals of $A\hat\otimes B$. It is also shown that the Banach $\ast$-algebra $A\hat\otimes B$ possesses Wiener property; and that, for a subhomogenous $C^*$-algebra $A$, $A\hat\otimes B$ is symmetric.
We show that Ringrose's diagonal ideals are primitive ideals in a nest algebra (subject to the Continuum Hypothesis). This provides for the first time concerete descriptions of enough primitive ideals to obtain the Jacobson radical as their intersection. Separately, we provide a standard form for all left ideals of a nest algebra, which leads to insights into the maximal left ideals. In the case of atomic nest algebras we show how primitive ideals can be categorized by their behaviour on the diagonal, and provide concrete examples of all types.
We give a necessary and sufficient criterion for an operator in a nest algebra to belong to a proper two-sided ideal of that algebra. Using this result, we describe the strong radical of a nest algebra, and give a general description of the maximal two-sided ideals.
