Given a unital C*-subalgebra of B(H), we study the set of all possible images of its injective envelope that are contained in B(H) and their position relative to the double commutant of the algebra in order to obtain more information about the existence or non-existence of weak expectations. We study the subset of B(H) that is the intersection of all possible images of the injective envelope and show that it is simultaneously a reflexive cover and a new type of order completion of the algebra.
We determine the injective envelope and local multiplier algebra of a continuous trace C*-algebra that arises from a continuous Hilbert bundle over an arbitrary locally compact Hausdorff space. In addition, we show that the second-order local multiplier algebra of any such algebra is injective.
A precise description of the injective envelope of a spatial continuous trace C*-algebra A over a Stonean space Delta is given. The description is based on the notion of a weakly continuous Hilbert bundle, which we show to be a Kaplansky--Hilbert module over the abelian AW*-algebra C(Delta). We then use the description of the injective envelope of A to study the first- and second-order local multiplier algebras of A. In particular, we show that the second-order local multiplier algebra of A is precisely the injective envelope of A.
We consider the ideal structure of a reduced crossed product of a unital $C^*$-algebra equipped with an action of a discrete group. More specifically we find sufficient and necessary conditions for the group action to have the intersection property, meaning that non-zero ideals in the reduced crossed product restrict to non-zero ideals in the underlying $C^*$-algebra. We show that the intersection property of a group action on a $C^*$-algebra is equivalent to the intersection property of the action on the equivariant injective envelope. We present some more foundations for a theory of real structure in operator spaces and algebras, in particular concerning the real case of the theory of injectivity, and the injective, ternary, and $C^*$-envelope. We consider the interaction between these topics and the complexification. We also generalize many of these results to the setting of operator spaces and systems acted upon by a group.
This paper studies injective envelopes of groupoid dynamical systems and the corresponding boundaries. Analogue to the group case, we associate a bundle of compact Hausdorff spaces to any (discrete) groupoid (the Hamana boundary of the groupoid). We study bundles of compact topological spaces equipped with an action of a groupoid. We show that any groupoid has a minimal boundary (the Furstenberg boundary of the groupoid). We study the issue of issue of purity (as a completely positive linear map) for identity maps on operators systems and for their completely isometric embeddings into their C$^*$-envelopes and injective envelopes. Our most general result states that the canonical embedding of an operator system $\mathcal R$ into its injective envelope $\mathcal I(\mathcal R)$ is pure if and only if the C$^*$-envelope of $\mathcal R$ is a prime C$^*$-algebra. A new C*-enlargement of a C*-algebra $A$ nested between the local multiplier algebra $M_{\text{loc}}(A)$ of $A$ and its injective envelope $I(A)$ is introduced. Various aspects of this maximal C*-algebra of quotients, $Q_{\text{max}}(A)$, are studied, notably in the setting of AW*-algebras. As a by-product we obtain a new example of a type I C*-algebra $A$ such that $M_{\text{loc}}(M_{\text{loc}}(A))\ne M_{\text{loc}}(A)$.
We study the injective envelope I(X) of an operator space X, showing amongst other things that it is a self-dual C$^*-$module. We describe the diagonal corners of the injective envelope of the canonical operator system associated with X. We prove that if X is an operator $A-B$-bimodule, then A and B can be represented completely contractively as subalgebras of these corners. Thus, the operator algebras that can act on X are determined by these corners of I(X) and consequently bimodules actions on X extend naturally to actions on I(X). We introduce the notion of a Cartan envelope for a regular inclusion (C,D). When a Cartan envelope exists, it is the unique, minimal Cartan pair into which (C,D) regularly embeds. We prove a Cartan envelope exists if and only if (C,D) has the unique faithful pseudo-expectation property and also give a characterization of the Cartan envelope using the ideal intersection property. Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a C*-algebra and $α:\mathcal{C} \rightarrow \mathcal{C}$ a unital *-endomorphism. There is a natural way to construct operator algebras which are called semicrossed products, using a convolution induced by the action of $α$ on $\mathcal{C}$. We show that the C*-envelope of a semicrossed product is (a full corner of) a crossed product. As a consequence, we get that, when $α$ is *-injective, the semicrossed products are completely isometrically isomorphic and share the same C*-envelope, the crossed product $\mathcal{C}_\infty \rtimes_{α_\infty} \mathbb{Z}$. We introduce an equivariant version of the weak expectation property (WEP) at the level of operator modules over completely contractive Banach algebras $A$. We prove a number of general results---for example, a characterization of the $A$-WEP in terms of an appropriate $A$-injective envelope, and also a characterization of those $A$ for which $A$-WEP implies WEP. In the case of $A=L^1(G)$, we recover the $G$-WEP for $G$-$C^*$-algebras in recent work of Buss--Echterhoff--Willett. For any injective von Neumann algebra R and any discrete, countable group G, which acts by *-automorphisms on R, we construct an idempotent mapping of an ultra-weakly dense subspace of B(H) onto the reducerd crossed product von Neumann algebra, such that it is R-bimodular and satisfies some nice relations with respect to positivity. In the case of an amenable group our unbounded expectation turns into a usual conditional expectation of norm 1.
We examine the semicrossed products of a semigroup action by $*$-endomorphisms on a C*-algebra, or more generally of an action on an arbitrary operator algebra by completely contractive endomorphisms. The choice of allowable representations affects the corresponding universal algebra. Let $(G, P)$ be an abelian, lattice ordered group and let $X$ be a compactly aligned product system over $P$. We show that the C*-envelope of the Nica tensor algebra $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{T}^+_X$ coincides with both Sehnem's covariance algebra $\mathcal{A} \times_X P$ and the co-universal C*-algebra $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{O}^r_X$ for injective, gauge compatible, Nica-covariant representations of Carlsen, Larsen, Sims and Vittadello. We use the injective envelope to study quasimultipliers of operator spaces. We prove that all representable operator algebra products that an operator space can be endowed with are induced by quasimultipliers. We obtain generalizations of the Banach-Stone theorem.
This paper is a continuation of the program started by Ruan in 2003, of developing real operator space theory. In particular, we develop the theory of real operator algebras. We also show among other things that the injective envelope, C*-envelope and non-commutative Shilov boundary exist for a real operator space. We develop real one-sided M-ideal theory and characterize one-sided M-ideals in real C*-algebras and real operator algebras with contractive approximate identity.
We show that every interaction group extending an action of an Ore semigroup by injective unital endomorphisms of a C*-algebra, admits a dilation to an action of the corresponding enveloping group on another unital C*-algebra, of which the former is a C*-subalgebra: the interaction group is obtained by composing the action with a conditional expectation. The dilation is essentially unique if a certain natural condition of minimality is imposed. If the action is induced by covering maps on the spectrum, then the expectation is faithful.
Motivated by the theory of tensor algebras and multivariable C*-dynamics, we revisit two fundamental techniques in the theory of C*-correspondences, the "addition of a tail" to a non-injective C*-correspondence and the dilation of an injective C*-correspondence to an essential Hilbert bimodule. We provide a very broad scheme for "adding a tail" to a non-injective C*-correspondence; our scheme includes the "tail" of Muhly and Tomforde as a special case. A classic theorem of T. Ando characterises operators that have numerical radius at most one as operators that admit a certain positive 2x2 operator matrix completion. In this paper we consider variants of Ando's theorem, in which the operators (and matrix completions) are constrained to a given C*-algebra. By considering nxn matrix completions, an extension of Ando's theorem to a multivariable setting is made. We introduce a matricial analogue of an Archimedean order unit space, which we call a $k$-AOU space. We develop the category of $k$-AOU spaces and $k$-positive maps and exhibit functors from this category to the category of operator systems and completely positive maps. We also demonstrate the existence of injective envelopes and C*-envelopes in the category of $k$-AOU spaces. Finally, we show that finite-dimensional quantum correlations can be characterized in terms of states on finite-dimensional $k$-AOU spaces.
