We study the ideal structure of $C^*$-algebras arising from $C^*$-correspondences. We prove that gauge-invariant ideals of our $C^*$-algebras are parameterized by certain pairs of ideals of original $C^*$-algebras. We show that our $C^*$-algebras have a nice property which should be possessed by generalization of crossed products. Applications to crossed products by Hilbert $C^*$-bimodules and relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebras are also discussed.
We introduce a method to define $C^*$-algebras from $C^*$-correspondences. Our construction generalizes Cuntz-Pimsner algebras, crossed products by Hilbert $C^*$-modules, and graph algebras.
We construct a functor that maps $C^*$-correspondences to their Cuntz-Pimsner algebras. The objects in our domain category are $C^*$-correspondences, and the morphisms are the isomorphism classes of $C^*$-correspondences satisfying certain conditions. As an application, we recover a well-known result of Muhly and Solel. In fact, we show that functoriality leads us to a more generalized result: strongly Morita equivalent $C^*$-correspondences have Morita equivalent Cuntz-Pimsner algebras.
The structure of the $C^*$-algebras corresponding to even-dimensional mirror quantum spheres is investigated. It is shown that they are isomorphic to both Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of certain $C^*$-correspondences and $C^*$-algebras of certain labelled graphs. In order to achieve this, categories of labelled graphs and $C^*$-correspondences are studied. A functor from labelled graphs to $C^*$-correspondences is constructed, such that the corresponding associated $C^*$-algebras are isomorphic. Furthermore, it is shown that $C^*$-correspondences for the mirror quantum spheres arise via a general co…
Muhly and Solel developed a notion of Morita equivalence for $C^{*}$- correspondences, which they used to show that if two $C^{*}$-correspondences $E$ and $F$ are Morita equivalent then their tensor algebras $\mathcal{T}_{+}(E)$ and $\mathcal{T}_{+}(F)$ are (strongly) Morita equivalent operator algebras. We give the weak$^{*}$ version of this result by considering (weak) Morita equivalence of $W^{*}$-correspondences and employing Blecher and Kashyap's notion of Morita equivalence for dual operator algebras. More precisely, we show that weak Morita equivalence of $W^{*}$-correspondences $E$ and…
We study $C^*$-algebras arising from $C^*$-correspondences, which was introduced by the author. We prove the gauge-invariant uniqueness theorem, and obtain conditions for our $C^*$-algebras to be nuclear, exact, or satisfy the Universal Coefficient Theorem. We also obtain a 6-term exact sequence of $K$-groups involving the $K$-groups of our $C^*$-algebras.
We show that hyperrigidity for a C*-correspondence $(A,X)$ is equivalent to non-degeneracy of the left action of the Katsura ideal $\mathcal{J}_X$ on $X$. Due to the work of Katsoulis and Ramsey, our result shows that if $G$ is a locally compact group acting on $(A,X)$ and the Katsura ideal $\mathcal{J}_X$ acts on $X$ non-degenerately then the Hao-Ng isomorphism problem for reduced crossed products has a positive solution and the Hao-Ng isomorphism problem for full crossed products has a partial solution.
We investigate Cuntz-Pimsner $C^*$-algebras associated with certain correspondences of the unit circle $\mathbb{T}$. We analyze these $C^*$-algebras by analogy with irrational rotation algebras $A_θ$ and Cuntz algebras $\mathcal{O}_n$. We construct a Rieffel type projection, study the fixed point algebras of certain actions of finite groups, and calculate the entropy of a certain endomorphism. We also study the induced map of the dual action of the gauge action on $K$-groups.
We associate a pro-C*-algebra to a pro-C*-correspondence and show that this construction generalizes the construction of crossed products by Hilbert pro-C*-bimodules and the construction of pro-C*-crossed products by strong bounded automorphisms.
When a locally compact group acts on a C*-correspondence, it also acts on the associated Cuntz-Pimsner algebra in a natural way. Hao and Ng have shown that when the group is amenable the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of the crossed product correspondence is isomorphic to the crossed product of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra. In this paper, we have a closer look at this isomorphism in the case where the group is not necessarily amenable. We also consider what happens at the level of Toeplitz algebras.
In this paper we survey our recent work on C*-correspondences and their associated operator algebras; in particular, on adding tails, the Shift Equivalence Problem and Hilbert bimodules.
Given two correspondences X and Y, we show that (under mild hypotheses) the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of the tensor product of X and Y embeds as a certain subalgebra of the tensor product of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of X and the Cuntz=Pimsner algebra of Y. Furthermore, this subalgebra can be described in a natural way in terms of the gauge actions on the Cuntz-Pimsner algebras. We explore implications for graph algebras, crossed products by the integers, and crossed products by completely positive maps. We also give a new proof of a result of Kaliszewski and Quigg related to coactions on correspo…
In this paper, we prove a Galois correspondence for compact group actions on C*-algebras in the presence of a commuting minimal action. Namely, we show that there is a one to one correspondence between the C*-subalgebras that are globally invariant under the compact action and the commuting minimal action, that in addition contain the fixed point algebra of the compact action and the closed, normal subgroups of the compact group.
We discuss strong shift equivalence, which has been used to characterize conjugacy of edge shifts, and its application to C*-algebras of graphs and Cuntz-Pimsner algebras.
This is primarily an exposition of our work on Hardy algebras associated with $W^*$-correspondences with an emphasis on interpolation results (a generalized Nevanlinna-Pick theorem) and the concepts of Schur class operator functions (and realizations). We describe in detail the construction of the Hardy algebras, its representations and the important concepts of duality and point evaluation. Many examples are provided.
We describe a method of adding tails to C*-correspondences which generalizes the process used in the study of graph C*-algebras. We show how this technique can be used to extend results for augmented Cuntz-Pimsner algebras to C*-algebras associated to general C*-correspondences, and as an application we prove a gauge-invariant uniqueness theorem for these algebras. We also define a notion of relative graph C*-algebras and show that properties of these C*-algebras can provide insight and motivation for results about relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebras.
We interpret the construction of relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of correspondences in terms of the correspondence bicategory, as a reflector into a certain sub-bicategory. This generalises a previous characterisation of absolute Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of proper correspondences as colimits in the correspondence bicategory.
For a closed subgroup of a locally compact group the Rieffel induction process gives rise to a $C^*$-correspondence over the $C^*$-algebra of the subgroup. We study the associated Cuntz-Pimsner algebra and show that, by varying the subgroup to be open, compact, or discrete, there are connections with the Exel-Pardo correspondence arising from a cocycle, and also with graph algebras.
Let $Γ$ be a discrete group satisfying the approximation property (AP). Let $X$, $Y$ be $Γ$-spaces and $π\colon Y \to X$ be a proper factor map which is injective on the non-free part. We prove the one-to-one correspondence between intermediate ${\rm C}^\ast$-algebras of $C_0(X) \rtimes_r Γ\subset C_0(Y) \rtimes Γ$ and intermediate $Γ$-${\rm C}^\ast$-algebras of $C_0(X) \subset C_0(Y)$. This is a generalization of Suzuki's theorem that proves the statement for free actions.
We define the notion of a $Λ$-system of $C^*$-correspondences associated to a higher-rank graph $Λ$. Roughly speaking, such a system assigns to each vertex of $Λ$ a $C^*$-algebra, and to each path in $Λ$ a $C^*$-correspondence in a way which carries compositions of paths to balanced tensor products of $C^*$-correspondences. Under some simplifying assumptions, we use Fowler's technology of Cuntz-Pimsner algebras for product systems of $C^*$-correspondences to associate a $C^*$-algebra to each $Λ$-system. We then construct a Fell bundle over the path groupoid $\Gg_Λ$ and show that the $C^*$-alge…
In this paper we extend the Pietsch correspondence for ideals of compact operators and traces on them to the semifinite setting. We prove that a shift-monotone space $E(\Z)$ of sequences indexed by $\Z$ defines a Calkin space $E(\cM,τ)$ of $τ$-measurable operators affiliated with a semifinite von Neumann algebra $\cM$ equipped with a faithful normal semifinite trace $τ$. Furthermore, we show that shift-invariant functionals on $E(\Z)$ generate symmetric functionals on $E(\cM,τ)$. In the special case, when the algebra $\cM$ is atomless or atomic with atoms of equal trace, the converse also hold…
Certain $*$-semigroups are associated with the universal $C^*$-algebra generated by a partial isometry, which is itself the universal $C^*$-algebra of a $*$-semigroup. A fundamental role for a $*$-structure on a semigroup is emphasized, and ordered and matricially ordered $*$-semigroups are introduced, along with their universal $C^*$-algebras. The universal $C^*$-algebra generated by a partial isometry is isomorphic to a relative Cuntz-Pimsner $C^*$-algebra of a $C^*$-correspondence over the $C^*$-algebra of a matricially ordered $*$-semigroup. One may view the $C^*$-algebra of a partial isom…
We show that the passage from a $C^\ast$-correspondence to its Cuntz-Pimsner $C^\ast$-algebra gives a functor on a category of $C^\ast$-correspondences with appropriately defined morphisms. Applications involving topological graph $C^\ast$-algebras are discussed, and an application to crossed-product correspondences is presented in detail.
In this paper we consider we study various classical operator ideals (for instance, the ideals of strictly (co)singular, weakly compact, Dunford-Pettis operators) either on $C^*$-algebras, or preduals of von Neumann algebras.
We give a short proof of a recent theorem of Ionescu which shows that the Cuntz-Pimsner C*-algebra of a certain correspondence associated to a Mauldin-Williams graph is isomorphic to the graph algebra.
The study of different types of ideals in non self-adjoint operator algebras has been a topic of recent research. This study focuses on principal ideals in subalgebras of groupoid C*-algebras. An ideal is said to be principal if it is generated by a single element of the algebra. We look at subalgebras of r-discrete principal groupoid C*-algebras and prove that these algebras are principal ideal algebras. Regular canonical subalgebras of almost finite C*-algebras have digraph algebras as their building blocks. The spectrum of almost finite C*-algebras has the structure of an r-discrete princip…
Let E be a C*-correspondence over a C*-algebra \A with non-degenerate faithful left action. We show that E admits sufficiently many essential representations (i.e. representations ψsuch that ψ(E)H = H to recover the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra O_E.
It is a well-known fact that endomorphisms of $B(H)$ are intimately connected with families of mutually orthogonal isometries, i.e. with representations of the so-called Toeplitz $C^*$-algebras. In this paper we consider a natural generalization of this connection between the representation theory of certain $C^*$-algebras associated to graphs and endomorphisms of certain von Neumann subalgebras of $B(H)$. Our primary results give criteria by which it may be determined if two representations give rise to equal or conjugate endomorphisms.
We give a complete description of the primitive ideal space of the C*-algebra associated to the ring of integers R in a number field K as considered in a recent paper by Cuntz, Deninger and Laca.
Various questions on Lie ideals of C*-algebras are investigated. They fall roughly under the following topics: relation of Lie ideals to closed two-sided ideals; Lie ideals spanned by special classes of elements such as commutators, nilpotents, and the range of polynomials; characterization of Lie ideals as similarity invariant subspaces.
Generalising the well-known correspondence between two-sided adjunctions and Frobenius algebras, we establish a one-to-one correspondence between local adjunctions of C*-correspondences, as defined and studied in prior work with P. Clare and N. Higson; and Frobenius C*-algebras, a natural C*-algebraic adaptation of the standard notion of Frobenius algebras that we introduce here.
In this paper, we consider $\text{C}^*$-algebras with the ideal property (the ideal property unifies the simple and real rank zero cases). We define two categories related the invariants of the $\text{C}^*$-algebras with the ideal property. And we showed that these two categories are in fact isomorphic. As a consequence, the Elliott's Invariant and the Stevens' Invariant are isomorphic for $\text{C}^*$-algebras with the ideal property.
For $C^*$-algebras $A$ and $B$, we prove the slice map conjecture for ideals in the operator space projective tensor product $A \hat\otimes B$. As an application, a characterization of prime ideals in the Banach $\ast$-algebra $A\hat\otimes B$ is obtained. Further, we study the primitive ideals, modular ideals and the maximal modular ideals of $A\hat\otimes B$. It is also shown that the Banach $\ast$-algebra $A\hat\otimes B$ possesses Wiener property; and that, for a subhomogenous $C^*$-algebra $A$, $A\hat\otimes B$ is symmetric.
We extend the notion of Rokhlin dimension from topological dynamical systems to $C^*$-correspondences. We show that in the presence of finite Rokhlin dimension and a mild quasidiagonal-like condition (which, for example, is automatic for finitely generated projective correspondences), finite nuclear dimension passes from the scalar algebra to the associated Toeplitz--Pimsner and (hence) Cuntz--Pimsner algebras. As a consequence we provide new examples of classifiable $C^*$-algebras: if $A$ is simple, unital, has finite nuclear dimension and satisfies the UCT, then for every finitely generated …
Let $p(z,w)$ be a polynomial in two variables. We call the solution of the algebraic equation $p(z,w) = 0$ the algebraic correspondence. We regard it as the graph of the multivalued function $z \mapsto w$ defined implicitly by $p(z,w) = 0$. Algebraic correspondences on the Riemann sphere $\hat{\mathbb C}$ give a generalization of dynamical systems of Klein groups and rational functions. We introduce $C^*$-algebras associated with algebraic correspondences on the Riemann sphere. We show that if an algebraic correspondence is free and expansive on a closed $p$-invariant subset $J$ of $\hat{\math…
Given a C$^*$-correspondence $X$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the tensor algebra $\mathcal T_X^+$ to be hyperrigid. In the case where $X$ is coming from a topological graph we obtain a complete characterization.
We revisit a central result of Muhly and Solel on operator algebras of C*-correspondences. We prove that (possibly non-injective) strongly Morita equivalent C*-correspondences have strongly Morita equivalent relative Cuntz-Pimsner C*-algebras. The same holds for strong Morita equivalence (in the sense of Blecher, Muhly and Paulsen) and strong $Δ$-equivalence (in the sense of Eleftherakis) for the related tensor algebras. In particular, we obtain stable isomorphism of the operator algebras when the equivalence is given by a $σ$-TRO. As an application we show that strong Morita equivalence coinc…
We show that the $\ca$-envelope of the tensor algebra of an arbitrary $\ca$-correspondence $\X$ coincides with the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra $Ø_{\X}$, as defined by Katsura \cite{Ka}. This improves earlier results of Muhly and Solel and Fowler, Muhly and Raeburn, who came to the same conclusion under the additional hypothesis that $\X$ is strict and faithful.
We consider compact group actions on C*- and W*- algebras. We prove results that relate the duality property of the action (as defined in the Introduction) with other relevant properties of the system such as the relative commutant of the fixed point algebras being trivial (called the irreducibility of the inclusion) and also to the Galois correspondence between invariant C*-subalgebras containing the fixed point algebra and the class of closed normal subgroups of the compact group.
Let $(G,α)$ and $(H,β)$ be locally compact groupoids with Haar systems. We define a topological correspondence from $(G,α)$ to $(H,β)$ to be a $G$-$H$-bispace $X$ on which $H$ acts properly and $X$ carries a continuous family of measures which is $H$-invariant and each measure in the family is $G$-quasi invariant. We show that a topological correspondence produces a $C^*$-correspondence from $C^*(G,α)$ to $C^*(H,β)$. We give many examples of topological correspondences.
We show that a $KK$-equivalence between two unital $C^*$-algebras produces a correspondence between their DG categories of finitely generated projective modules which is a $\mathbf{K}_*$-equivalence, where $\mathbf{K}_*$ is Waldhausen's $K$-theory. We discuss some connections with strong deformations of $C^*$-algebras and homological dualities. Motivated by a construction of Cuntz we associate a pro $C^*$-algebra to any simplicial set. We show that this construction is functorial with respect to proper maps of simplicial sets, that we define, and also respects proper homotopy equivalences. We …
We investigate the ideal structures of the C^*-algebras arising from topological graphs. We give the complete description of ideals of such C^*-algebras which are invariant under the so-called gauge action, and give the condition on topological graphs so that all ideals are invariant under the gauge action. We get conditions for our C^*-algebras to be simple, prime or primitive. We completely determine the prime ideals, and show that most of them are primitive. Finally, we construct a discrete graph such that the associated C^*-algebra is prime but not primitive.
We prove several results concerning the theory of Toeplitz algebras over $p$-Fock spaces using a correspondence theory of translation invariant symbol and operator spaces. The most notable results are: The full Toeplitz algebra is the norm closure of all Toeplitz operators with bounded uniformly continuous symbols. This generalizes a result obtained by J. Xia (J. Funct. Anal. 269:781-814, 2015) in the case $p = 2$, which was proven by different methods. Further, we prove that every Toeplitz algebra which has a translation invariant $C^\ast$ subalgebra of the bounded uniformly continuous functi…
We give an affirmative answer to the question whether there exist Lie algebras for suitable closed subgroups of the unitary group $U(\mathcal{H})$ in a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ with $U(\mathcal{H})$ equipped with the strong operator topology. More precisely, for any strongly closed subgroup $G$ of the unitary group $U(\mathfrak{M})$ in a finite von Neumann algebra $\mathfrak{M}$, we show that the set of all generators of strongly continuous one-parameter subgroups of $G$ forms a complete topological Lie algebra with respect to the strong resolvent topology. We also characterize the algebra …
We continue the study of r-ideals, l-ideals, and HSA's in operator algebras. Some applications are made to the structure of operator algebras, including Wedderburn type theorems for a class of operator algebras. We also consider the one-sided $M$-ideal structure of certain tensor products of operator algebras.
An operator *-algebra is a non-selfadjoint operator algebra with completely isometric involution. We show that any operator *-algebra admits a faithful representation on a Hilbert space in such a way that the involution coincides with the operator adjoint up to conjugation by a symmetry. We introduce operator *-correspondences as a general class of inner product modules over operator *-algebras and prove a similar representation theorem for them. From this we derive the existence of linking operator *-algebras for operator *-correspondences. We illustrate the relevance of this class of inner p…
A notion of partial ideal for an operator algebra is a weakening the notion of ideal where the defining algebraic conditions are enforced only in the commutative subalgebras. We show that, in a von Neumann algebra, the ultraweakly closed two-sided ideals, which we call total ideals, correspond to the unitarily invariant partial ideals. The result also admits an equivalent formulation in terms of central projections. We place this result in the context of an investigation into notions of spectrum of noncommutative $C^*$-algebras.
We characterize the ideal of continuous-trace elements in a separable transformation-group $C^{*}$-algebra $C_0(X)\times G$. In addition, we identify the largest Fell ideal, the largest liminal ideal and the largest postliminal ideal.
Given a quantum graph $\mathcal{G}=(B,ψ,A)$, we define a C*-correspondence $E_\mathcal{G}$ over the noncommutative vertex C*-algebra $B$, called the quantum edge correspondence. For a classical graph $\mathcal{G}$, $E_\mathcal{G}$ is the usual graph correspondence spanned by the edges of $\mathcal{G}$. When the quantum adjacency matrix $A\colon B\to B$ is completely positive, we show that $E_\mathcal{G}$ is faithful if and only if $\ker(A)$ does not contain a central summand of $B$. In this case, we show that the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra $\mathcal{O}_{E_\mathcal{G}}$ is isomorphic to a quotient o…
A $C^{*}$-algebra $A$ has ideal property if any ideal $I$ of $A$ is generated as a closed two sided ideal by the projections inside the ideal. Suppose that the limit $C^{*}$-algebra $A$ of inductive limit of direct sums of matrix algebras over spaces with uniformly bounded dimension has ideal property. In this paper, we will prove that $A$ can be written as an inductive limit of certain very special subhomogeneous algebras, namely, direct sum of dimension drop interval algebras and matrix algebras over 2-dimensional spaces with torsion $H^{2}$ groups.
Let E be an arbitrary graph and K be any field. For every non-graded ideal I of the Leavitt path algebra L_{K}(E), we give an explicit description of the generators of I. Using this, we show that every finitely generated ideal of L_{K}(E) must be principal. In particular, if E is a finite graph, then every ideal of L_{K}(E) must be principal ideal.
The notion of Fréchet locally $C^*$-algebra generalizes the notion of $C^*$-algebra. In this paper, we first present some definitions and basic facts about locally $C^*$-algebra, and then we introduce and study the notion of ideal and weak amenability for these algebras. Also, we show that every Fréchet locally $C^*$-algebra is ideally amenable.
The paper is a continuation of the research on a one-to-one correspondence between $n$-dimensional spectral resolutions and $n$-dimensional observables on lexicographic types of quantum structures which started in \cite{DvLa4}. In Part I, we presented the main properties of $n$-dimensional spectral resolutions and observables, and we deeply studied characteristic points which are crucial for our study. In present Part II, there is a main body of our research. We investigate a one-to-one correspondence between $n$-dimensional observables and $n$-dimensional spectral resolutions with values in a…
