Noncommutative (NC) sphere is introduced as a quotient of the enveloping algebra of the Lie algebra su(2). Using the Cayley-Hamilton identities we introduce projective modules which are analogues of line bundles on the usual sphere (we call them quantum line bundles) and define a multiplicative structure in their family. Also, we compute a pairing between certain quantum line bundles and finite dimensional representations of the NC sphere in the spirit of the NC index theorem. A new approach to constructing the differential calculus on a NC sphere is suggested. The approach makes use of the projective modules in question and gives rise to a NC de Rham complex being a deformation of the classical one.
An algebraic framework for noncommutative bundles with (quantum) homogeneous fibres is proposed. The framework relies on the use of principal coalgebra extensions which play the role of principal bundles in noncommutative geometry which might be additionally equipped with a Hopf algebra symmetry. The proposed framework is supported by two examples of noncommutative $\mathbb{C} P_q^1$-bundles: the quantum flag manifold viewed as a bundle with a generic Podleś sphere as a fibre, and the quantum twistor bundle viewed as a bundle over the quantum 4-sphere of Bonechi, Ciccoli and Tarlini.
The quantum flag manifold ${SU_q(3)/\mathbb{T}^2}$ is interpreted as a noncommutative bundle over the quantum complex projective plane with the quantum or Podleś sphere as a fibre. A connection arising from the (associated) quantum principal $U_q(2)$-bundle is described.
Building on the now established presentation of the standard Podles sphere as an example of a noncommutative complex structure, we investigate how its classical Kahler geometry behaves under $q$-deformation. Discussed are noncommutative versions of Hodge decomposition, Lefschetz decomposition, the Kahler identities, and the refinement of de Rham cohomology by Dolbeault cohomology
Quantum principal bundles or principal comodule algebras are re-interpreted as principal bundles within a framework of Synthetic Noncommutative Differential Geometry. More specifically, the notion of a noncommutative principal bundle within a braided monoidal category is introduced and it is shown that a noncommutative principal bundle in the category opposite to the category of vector spaces is the same as a faithfully flat Hopf-Galois extension.
The leitmotiv of this review is noncommutative principal U(1)-bundles and associated line bundles. In the first part I give a brief introduction to Hopf-Galois theory and its applications, from field extensions to principal group actions. I then recall Woronowicz' definition of compact quantum group and the notion of noncommutative principal bundle. When the structure group is U(1), there is a construction due to Pimsner that allows to get the total space of a "bundle" (more precisely, a strongly graded C*-algebra) from the base space and a noncommutative "line bundle" (a self-Morita equivalen…
A one parameter set of noncommutative complex algebras is given. These may be considered deformation quantisation algebras. The commutative limit of these algebras correspond to the algebra of polynomial functions over a manifold or variety. The topology of the manifold or variety depends on the parameter, varying from nothing, to a point, a sphere, a certain variety and finally a torus. The irreducible adjoint preserving representations of the noncommutative algebras are studied. As well as typical noncommutative sphere type representations and noncommutative torus type representations, a new…
We introduce a category of noncommutative bundles. To establish geometry in this category we construct suitable noncommutative differential calculi on these bundles and study their basic properties. Furthermore we define the notion of a connection with respect to a differential calculus and consider questions of existence and uniqueness. At the end these constructions are applied to basic examples of noncommutative bundles over a coquasitriangular Hopf algebra.
We prove that every holomorphic vector bundle on a noncommutative two-torus $T$ can be obtained by successive extensions from standard holomorphic bundles considered in math.QA/0211262. This implies that the category of holomorphic bundles on $T$ is equivalent to the heart of certain $t$-structure on the derived category of coherent sheaves on an elliptic curve.
In this paper we study the moduli space of standard holomorphic structures on a noncommutative complex two torus. It will be shown that the moduli space is naturally identified with the moduli space of stable bundles on an elliptic curve. We also propose that the mirror reflection of the noncommutative complex torus is the mirror reflection of the elliptic curve together with a linear foliation. From this we identify the moduli space of super cycles on the mirror reflection with the moduli space of standard holomorphic bundles on a noncommutative complex torus.
In this paper we study the category of standard holomorphic vector bundles on a noncommutative two-torus. We construct a functor from the derived category of such bundles to the derived category of coherent sheaves on an elliptic curve and prove that it induces an equivalence with the subcategory of stable objects. By the homological mirror symmetry for elliptic curves this implies an equivalence between the derived category of holomorphic bundles on a noncommutative two-torus and the Fukaya category of the corresponding symplectic (commutative) torus.
Spectral triples over noncommutative principal $\T^n$-bundles are studied, extending recent results about the noncommutative geometry of principal U(1)-bundles. We relate the noncommutative geometry of the total space of the bundle with the geometry of the base space. Moreover, strong connections are used to build new Dirac operators. We discuss as a particular case the commutative case, the noncommutative tori and theta deformed manifolds.
Let $G'$ be a closed subgroup of a topological group $G$. A principal $G$-bundle $X$ is reducible to a locally trivial principal $G'$-bundle $X'$ if and only if there exists a local trivialisation of $X$ such that all transition functions take values in $G'$. We prove a noncommutative-geometric counterpart of this theorem. To this end, we employ the concept of a piecewise-trivial principal comodule algebra as a replacement of a locally trivial compact principal bundle. To illustrate our theorem, first we define a new noncommutative deformation of the $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-principal bundle $…
By a diagonal embedding of $U(1)$ in $SU_q(m)$, we prolongate the diagonal circle action on the Vaksman-Soibelman quantum sphere $S^{2n+1}_q$ to the $SU_q(m)$-action on the prolongated bundle. Then we prove that the noncommutative vector bundles associated via the fundamental representation of $SU_q(m)$, for $m\in\{2,\ldots,n\}$, yield generators of the even K-theory group of the C*-algebra of the Vaksman-Soibelman quantum complex projective space $\mathbb{C}{\rm P}^n_q$.
We present two classes of examples of Hopf algebroids associated with noncommutative principal bundles. The first comes from deforming the principal bundle while leaving unchanged the structure Hopf algebra. The second is related to deforming a quantum homogeneous space; this needs a careful deformation of the structure Hopf algebra in order to preserve the compatibilities between the Hopf algebra operations.
We show that the noncommutative spheres of Connes and Landi are quantum homogeneous spaces for certain compact quantum groups. We give a general construction of homogeneous spaces which support noncommutative spin geometries.
We introduce and study two new examples of noncommutative spheres: the half-liberated sphere, and the free sphere. Together with the usual sphere, these two spheres have the property that the corresponding quantum isometry group is "easy", in the representation theory sense. We present as well some general comments on the axiomatization problem, and on the "untwisted" and "non-easy" case.
We construct explicitly noncommutative deformations of categories of holomorphic line bundles over higher dimensional tori. Our basic tools are Heisenberg modules over noncommutative tori and complex/holomorphic structures on them introduced by A. Schwarz. We obtain differential graded (DG) categories as full subcategories of curved DG categories of Heisenberg modules over the complex noncommutative tori. Also, we present the explicit composition formula of morphisms, which in fact depends on the noncommutativity.
We present an introduction to the use of noncommutative geometry for gauge theories with emphasis on a construction of instantons for a class of four dimensional toric noncommutative manifolds. These instantons are solutions of self-duality equations and are critical points of an action functional. We explain the crucial role of twisted symmetries as well as methods from noncommutative index theorems.
We study spectral triples over noncommutative principal U(1)-bundles of arbitrary dimension and formulate a compatibility condition between the connection and the Dirac operator on the total space and on the base space of the bundle. Examples of low dimensional noncommutative tori are analyzed in more detail and all connections found that are compatible with an admissible Dirac operator. Conversely, a family of new Dirac operators on the noncommutative tori, which arise from the base-space Dirac operator and a suitable connection is exhibited. These examples are extended to the theta-deformed …
We define the notion of a holomorphic bundle on the noncommutative toric orbifold $T_θ/G$ associated with an action of a finite cyclic group $G$ on an irrational rotation algebra. We prove that the category of such holomorphic bundles is abelian and its derived category is equivalent to the derived category of modules over a finite-dimensional algebras $Λ$. As an application we finish the computation of $K_0$-groups of the crossed product algebras describing the above orbifolds initiated by Kumjian, Walters and Buck. Also, we describe a torsion pair in the category of $Λ$-modules, such that th…
The Noncommutative Index Theorem is used to prove that the Chern character of quantum Hopf line bundles over the standard Podles quantum sphere equals the winding number of the representations defining these bundles. This result gives an estimate of the positive cone of the algebraic $K_0$ of the standard quantum sphere.
In this paper, we initiate the study of a parametrised version of Rieffel's strict deformation quantization. We apply it to give a classification of noncommutative principal torus bundles, in terms of parametrised strict deformation quantization of ordinary principal torus bundles. The paper also contains a putative definition of noncommutative non-principal torus bundles.
Differential calculi are obtained for quantum homogeneous spaces by extending Woronowicz' approach to the present context. Representation theoretical properties of the differential calculi are investigated. Connections on quantum homogeneous vector bundles are classified and explicitly constructed by using the theory of projective modules.
We study spectral triples over noncommutative principal U(1) bundles. Basing on the classical situation and the abstract algebraic approach, we propose an operatorial definition for a connection and compatibility between the connection and the Dirac operator on the total space and on the base space of the bundle. We analyze in details the example of the noncommutative three-torus viewed as a U(1) bundle over the noncommutative two-torus and find all connections compatible with an admissible Dirac operator. Conversely, we find a family of new Dirac operators on the noncommutative tori, which ar…
The idea of a line bundle in classical geometry is transferred to noncommutative geometry by the idea of a Morita context. From this we can construct Z and N graded algebras, the Z graded algebra being a Hopf-Galois extension. A non-degenerate Hermitian metric gives a star structure on this algebra, and an additional star operation on the line bundle gives a star operation on the N graded algebra. In this case, we can carry out the associated circle bundle and Thom constructions. Starting with a C* algebra as base, and with some positivity assumptions, the associated circle and Thom algebras a…
We discuss a general duality principle, between noncommutative analogues of the standard cube $\mathbb Z_2^N$, and nonocommutative analogues of the standard sphere $S^{N-1}_\mathbb R$. This duality is by construction of algebraic geometric nature, and conjecturally connects the corresponding quantum isometry groups, taken in an affine sense.
The sphere $S^{N-1}_\mathbb R$ has a half-liberated analogue $S^{N-1}_{\mathbb R,*}$, and a free analogue $S^{N-1}_{\mathbb R,+}$. This is a presentation of the construction and main properties of these noncommutative spheres, $S^{N-1}_\mathbb R\subset S^{N-1}_{\mathbb R,*}\subset S^{N-1}_{\mathbb R,+}$, and of their quantum isometry groups.
A ``Wick rotation'' is applied to the noncommutative sphere to produce a noncommutative version of the hyperboloids. A harmonic basis of the associated algebra is given. It is noted that, for the one sheeted hyperboloid, the vector space for the noncommutative algebra can be completed to a Hilbert space, where multiplication is not continuous. A method of constructing noncommutative analogues of surfaces of rotation, examples of which include the paraboloid and the $q$-deformed sphere, is given. Also given are mappings between noncommutative surfaces, stereographic projections to the complex p…
We present examples of noncommutative four-spheres that are base spaces of $SU(2)$-principal bundles with noncommutative seven-spheres as total spaces. The noncommutative coordinate algebras of the four-spheres are generated by the entries of a projection which is invariant under the action of $SU(2)$. We give conditions for the components of the Connes--Chern character of the projection to vanish but the second (the top) one. The latter is then a non zero Hochschild cycle that plays the role of the volume form for the noncommutative four-spheres.
We construct noncommutative principal bundles deforming principal bundles with a Drinfeld twist (2-cocycle). If the twist is associated with the structure group then we have a deformation of the fibers. If the twist is associated with the automorphism group of the principal bundle, then we obtain noncommutative deformations of the base space as well. Combining the two twist deformations we obtain noncommutative principal bundles with both noncommutative fibers and base space. More in general, the natural isomorphisms proving the equivalence of a closed monoidal category of modules and its twis…
This work is a continuation of the former paper in which principal bundles are given by compact spin toric manifolds and compact connected semisimple Lie groups. In this paper, ambient manifolds are assumed to be compact toric manifolds and Lie groups are compact connected. The main result is that locally smooth manifolds are the instanton moduli spaces of the noncommutative vector bundles over noncommutative 4-manifolds associated with highest weights of the compact Lie groups. Moreover their dimensions are described explicitly in terms of given principal bundles and highest weights. As a cor…
We study the interplay between noncommutative tori and noncommutative elliptic curves through a category of equivariant differential modules on $\mathbb{C}^*$. We functorially relate this category to the category of holomorphic vector bundles on noncommutative tori as introduced by Polishchuk and Schwarz and study the induced map between the corresponding K-theories. In addition, there is a forgetful functor to the category of noncommutative elliptic curves of Soibelman and Vologodsky, as well as a forgetful functor to the category of vector bundles on $\mathbb{C}^*$ with regular singular conn…
Global properties of abelian noncommutative gauge theories based on $\star$-products which are deformation quantizations of arbitrary Poisson structures are studied. The consistency condition for finite noncommutative gauge transformations and its explicit solution in the abelian case are given. It is shown that the local existence of invertible covariantizing maps (which are closely related to the Seiberg-Witten map) leads naturally to the notion of a noncommutative line bundle with noncommutative transition functions. We introduce the space of sections of such a line bundle and explicitly sh…
We compute the curvature of the determinant line bundle on a family of Dirac operators for a noncommutative two torus. Following Quillen's original construction for Riemann surfaces and using zeta regularized determinant of Laplacians, one can endow the determinant line bundle with a natural Hermitian metric. By using an analogue of Kontsevich-Vishik canonical trace, defined on Connes' algebra of classical pseudodifferential symbols for the noncommutative two torus, we compute the curvature form of the determinant line bundle by computing the second variation $δ_{w}δ_{\bar{w}}\log\det(Δ)$.
It is shown that the quantum instanton bundle introduced in Commun. Math. Phys. 226, 419-432 (2002) has a bijective canonical map and is, therefore, a coalgebra Galois extension.
In other to study connections and gauge theories on noncommutative spaces it is useful to use the local trivializations of principal bundles. In this note we show how to use noncommutative localization theory to describe a simple version of cocycle data for the bundles on noncommutative schemes with Hopf algebras in the role of the structure group which locally look like Hopf algebraic smash products. We also show how to use these Čech cocycles for associated vector bundles. We sketch briefly some examples related to quantum groups.
In this paper, we compute the entire cyclic cohomology of noncommutative 3-spheres. First of all, we verify the Mayer-Vietoris exact sequence of entire cyclic cohomology in the framework of Fréchet $^*$-algebras. Applying it to their noncommutative Heegaard decomposition, we deduce that their entire cyclic cohomology is isomorphic to the d'Rham homology of the ordinary 3-sphere with the complex coefficients.
It is known that, under strong combinatorial axioms, $O_N\subset O_N^*\subset O_N^+$ are the only orthogonal quantum groups. We prove here similar results for the noncommutative spheres $S^{N-1}_\mathbb R\subset S^{N-1}_{\mathbb R,*}\subset S^{N-1}_{\mathbb R,+}$, the noncommutative projective spaces $P^{N-1}_\mathbb R\subset P^{N-1}_\mathbb C\subset P^{N-1}_+$, and the projective orthogonal quantum groups $PO_N\subset PO_N^*\subset PO_N^+$.
We study noncommutative principal bundles (Hopf-Galois extensions) in the context of coquasitriangular Hopf algebras and their monoidal category of comodule algebras. When the total space is quasi-commutative, and thus the base space subalgebra is central, we define the gauge group as the group of vertical automorphisms or equivalently as the group of equivariant algebra maps. We study Drinfeld twist (2-cocycle) deformations of Hopf-Galois extensions and show that the gauge group of the twisted extension is isomorphic to the gauge group of the initial extension. In particular, noncommutative p…
The real sphere $S^{N-1}_\mathbb R$ appears as increasing union, over $d\in\{1,...,N\}$, of its "polygonal" versions $S^{N-1,d-1}_\mathbb R=\{x\in S^{N-1}_\mathbb R|x_{i_0}... x_{i_d}=0,\forall i_0,...,i_d\ {\rm distinct}\}$. Motivated by general classification questions for the undeformed noncommutative spheres, smooth or not, we study here the quantum isometries of $S^{N-1,d-1}_\mathbb R$, and of its various noncommutative analogues, obtained via liberation and twisting. We discuss as well a complex version of these results, with $S^{N-1}_\mathbb R$ replaced by the complex sphere $S^{N-1}_\m…
Noncommutative analogues of n-dimensional balls are defined by repeated application of the quantum double suspension to the classical low-dimensional spaces. In the `even-dimensional' case they correspond to the Twisted Canonical Commutation Relations of Pusz and Woronowicz. Then quantum spheres are constructed as double manifolds of noncommutative balls. Both C*-algebras and polynomial algebras of the objects in question are defined and analyzed, and their relations with previously known examples are presented. Our construction generalizes that of Hajac, Matthes and Szymanski for `dimension 2…
This is a copy of the talk given at the conference ``Methods in Field Theory'' at Stara Lesna, The Slovak Republic, Sepemeber 22-26, 1997. An introduction to the noncommutative sphere and a summary of the results of articles q-alg/9703038 \cite{Gratus5}, and q-alg/9708003 \cite{Gratus6} is given. This includes results about the the algebra of scalar, spinor and vector fields on the noncommutative sphere. Possible extensions of these results including a ``Wick rotation'' to the one and two sheeted hyperboloid are also examined.
We introduce the notion of noncommutative complex spheres with partial commutation relations for the coordinates. We compute the corresponding quantum symmetry groups of these spheres, and this yields new quantum unitary groups with partial commutation relations. We also discuss some geometric aspects of the quantum orthogonal groups associated with the mixture of classical and free independence discovered by Speicher and Weber. We show that these quantum groups are quantum symmetry groups on some quantum spaces of spherical vectors with partial commutation relations.
We construct a differential calculus over the noncommutative 4-sphere in the framework of pseudo-Riemannian calculi, and show that for every metric in a conformal class of perturbations of the round metric, there exists a unique metric and torsion-free connection. Furthermore, we find a localization of the projective module corresponding to the space of vector fields, which allows us to formulate a Gauss-Chern-Bonnet type theorem for the noncommutative 4-sphere.
We investigate a quantum twistor bundle constructed as a $U(1)$-quotient of the quantum instanton bundle of Bonechi, Ciccoli and Tarlini. It is an example of a noncommutative bundle fulfilling conditions of the purely algebraic framework proposed by Brzeziński and Szymański. We provide a detailed description of the corresponding $C^*$-algebra of `continuous functions' on its noncommutative total space.
Using the framework of noncommutative Kahler structures, we generalise to the noncommutative setting the celebrated vanishing theorem of Kodaira for positive line bundles. The result is established under the assumption that the associated Dirac-Dolbeault operator of the line bundle is diagonalisable, an assumption that is shown to always hold in the quantum homogeneous space case. The general theory is then applied to the covariant Kahler structure of the Heckenberger-Kolb calculus of the quantum Grassmannians allowing us to prove a direct q-deformation of the classical Grassmannian Bott-Borel…
The product of two Heisenberg-Weil algebras contains the Jordan-Schwinger representation of su(2). This Algebra is quotiented by the square-root of the Casimir to produce a non-associative algebra denoted by $Ψ$. This algebra may be viewed as the right-module over one of its associative subalgebras which corresponds to the algebra of scalar fields on the noncommutative sphere. It is now possible to interpret other subspaces as the space of spinor or vector fields on the noncommutative sphere. A natural basis of $Ψ$ is given which may be interpreted as the deformed entries in the rotation matri…
The q-Legendre polynomials can be treated as some special "functions in the quantum double cosets $U(1)\setminus SU_q(2)/U(1)$". They form a family (depending on a parameter $q$) of polynomials in one variable. We get their further generalization by introducing a two parameter family of polynomials. If the former family arises from an algebra which is in a sense "q-commutative", the latter one is related to its noncommutative counterpart. We introduce also a two parameter deformation of the invariant integral on a sphere.
Topological T-duality is a transformation taking a gerbe on a principal torus bundle to a gerbe on a principal dual-torus bundle. We give a new geometric construction of T-dualization, which allows the duality to be extended in following two directions. First, bundles of groups other than tori, even bundles of some nonabelian groups, can be dualized. Second, bundles whose duals are families of noncommutative groups (in the sense of noncommutative geometry) can be treated, though in this case the base space of the bundles is best viewed as a topological stack. Some methods developed for the con…
An infinite dimensional algebra which is a non-decomposable reducible representation of $su(2)$ is given. This algebra is defined with respect to two real parameters. If one of these parameters is zero the algebra is the commutative algebra of functions on the sphere, otherwise it is a noncommutative analogue. This is an extension of the algebra normally refered to as the (Berezin) quantum sphere or ``fuzzy'' sphere. A natural indefinite ``inner'' product and a basis of the algebra orthogonal with respect to it are given. The basis elements are homogenious polynomials, eigenvectors of a Laplac…
A wide class of noncommutative spaces, including 4-spheres based on all the quantum 2-spheres and suspensions of matrix quantum groups is described. For each such space a noncommutative vector bundle is constructed. This generalises and clarifies various recent constructions of noncommutative 4-spheres.
We outline how Drinfeld twist deformation techniques can be applied to the deformation quantization of principal bundles into noncommutative principal bundles, and more in general to the deformation of Hopf-Galois extensions. First we twist deform the structure group in a quantum group, and this leads to a deformation of the fibers of the principal bundle. Next we twist deform a subgroup of the group of authomorphisms of the principal bundle, and this leads to a noncommutative base space. Considering both deformations we obtain noncommutative principal bundles with noncommutative fiber and bas…
Natsume-Olsen noncommutative spheres are C*-algebras which generalize C(S^k) when k is odd. These algebras admit natural actions by finite cyclic groups, and if one of these actions is fixed, any equivariant homomorphism between two Natsume-Olsen spheres of the same dimension induces a nontrivial map on odd K-theory. This result is an extended, noncommutative Borsuk-Ulam theorem in odd dimension, and just as in the topological case, this theorem has many (almost) equivalent formulations in terms of theta-deformed spheres of arbitrary dimension. In addition, we present theorems on graded Banach…
In this review we discuss the global geometry of noncommutative field theories from a deformation point of view: The space-times under consideration are deformations of classical space-time manifolds using star products. Then matter fields are encoded in deformation quantizations of vector bundles over the classical space-time. For gauge theories we establish a notion of deformation quantization of a principal fiber bundle and show how the deformation of associated vector bundles can be obtained.
When considered as submanifolds of Euclidean space, the Riemannian geometry of the round sphere and the Clifford torus may be formulated in terms of Poisson algebraic expressions involving the embedding coordinates, and a central object is the projection operator, projecting tangent vectors in the ambient space onto the tangent space of the submanifold. In this note, we point out that there exist noncommutative analogues of these projection operators, which implies a very natural definition of noncommutative tangent spaces as particular projective modules. These modules carry an induced connec…
