Let G be a simple and simply connected complex linear algebraic group. In this paper, we discuss the generalization of the parabolic construction of holomorphic principal G-bundles over a smooth elliptic curve to the case of a singular curve of arithmetic genus one and to a fibration of Weierstrass cubics over a base B. Except for G of type E_8, the method gives a family of weighted projective spaces associated to a sum of line bundles over B. Working with the universal family of Weierstrass curves over affine two-space and its natural C^*-action, we determine the line bundles that arise in the direct sum in terms of the Casimir weights of the group. We show that in the case of a cuspidal or nodal curve C, provided that G is not of type E_8 or C is not cuspidal, the parabolic construction is closely related to constructions of Kostant and Steinberg of sections for the adjoint quotient morphism of the group G or its Lie algebra, and that moreover it gives a compactification of the adjoint quotient. We describe how the construction may be modified for E_8. Finally, given an irreducible representation of G, we characterize the G-bundles arising from the parabolic construction such that the associated vector bundle is unstable.
We prove that the pull back of an ample line bundle by an almost holomorphic Lagrangian fibration is nef. As an application, we show birational semi rigidity of Lagrangian fibrations.
Let $X\to¶^n$ be a $2n$-dimensional projective holomorphic symplectic manifold admitting a Lagrangian fibration over $¶^n$. Matsushita proved that the fibration can be deformed in a codimension one family in the moduli space $\mathrm{Def}(X)$ of deformations of $X$. We extend his result by proving that if the Lagrangian fibration admits a section, then there is a codimension two family of deformations which also preserve the section.
We investigate the stability of fibers of coisotropic fibrations on holomorphic symplectic manifolds and generalize Voisin's result on Lagrangian subvarieties to this framework. We present applications to the moduli space of holomorphic symplectic manifolds which are deformations equivalent to Hilbert schemes of points on a $K3$ surface or to generalized Kummer manifolds.
We give a Kodaira-type classification of general singular fibers of a holomorphic Lagrangian fibration in Fujiki's class $\mathcal C$. Our approach is based on the study of the characteristic vector field of the discriminantal hypersurface, which naturally arises from the defining equation of the hypersurface via the symplectic form. As an application, we show that the characteristic foliation of the discriminantal hypersurface has algebraic leaves which are either rational curves or smooth elliptic curves.
Let $Y$ be a smooth hypersurface in a projective irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold $X$ of dimension $2n$. The characteristic foliation $F$ is the kernel of the symplectic form restricted to $Y$. Assume that $X$ is equipped with a Lagrangian fibration $π:X\to B$ and $Y=π^{-1}D$, where $D$ is a hypersurface in $B$. It is easy to see that the leaves of $F$ are contained in the fibers of $π$. We prove that a very general leaf is Zariski dense in a fiber of $π$.
Let X be a projective hyperkähler manifold containing a Lagrangian subtorus L. We study intersections of deformations of L, defining a canonical almost holomorphic map called L-reduction, which is not birational if and only if X admits an almost holomorphic Lagrangian fibration with (strong) fibre L. In dimension four we prove that in the above situation there is always a holomorphic Lagrangian fibration with fibre L, thus answering a question of Beauville in this particular case.
We determine all possible multiplicities of general singular fibers of a holomorphic Lagrangian fibration, under the assumption that all components of the fibers are of Fujiki class. The multiplicities are at most 6 and the possible values are intricately related to the Kodaira type of the characteristic cycle.
In this paper we analyse the birational geometry of O'Grady ten dimensional manifolds, giving a characterisation of Kaehler classes and lagrangian fibrations. Moreover, we study symplectic compactifications of intermediate jacobian fibrations of smooth cubic fourfolds.
We describe certain Lagrangian fibrations by Prym varieties on holomorphic symplectic varieties that deform to compactifications of Sp-Hitchin systems.
We calculate curvature tensors of metrics on the total spaces of holomorphic fibrations. Our main tool is a theory of Chern connections and curvature forms for possibly degenerate Hermitian forms on holomorphic vector bundles. We prove a version of the Codazzi-Griffiths equations for curvatures of sub- and quotient bundles in that setting and apply them to the study of honest Hermitian metrics on fibrations. We apply this to calculate the curvature of a metric on Grassmannian bundles and prove they have positive holomorphic sectional curvature if the base does.
Let $X\to¶^n$ be an irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold of dimension $2n$ fibred over $¶^n$. Matsushita proved that the generic fibre is a holomorphic Lagrangian abelian variety. In this article we study the discriminant locus $Δ\subset¶^n$ parametrizing singular fibres. Our main result is a formula for the degree of $Δ$, leading to bounds on the degree when $X$ is a four-fold.
A hypercomplex manifold is a manifold equipped with a triple of complex structures satisfying the quaternionic relations. A holomorphic Lagrangian variety on a hypercomplex manifold with trivial canonical bundle is a holomorphic subvariety which is calibrated by a form associated with the holomorphic volume form; this notion is a generalization of the usual holomorphic Lagrangian subvarieties known in hyperkaehler geometry. An HKT (hyperkaehler with torsion) metric on a hypercomplex manifold is a metric determined by a local potential, in a similar way to the Kaehler metric. We prove that a ba…
A holomorphic Lagrangian fibration on a holomorphically symplectic manifold is a holomorphic map with Lagrangian fibers. It is known that a given compact manifold admits only finitely many holomorphic symplectic structures, up to deformation. We prove that a given compact manifold with $b_2 \geq 7$ admits only finitely many deformation types of holomorphic Lagrangian fibrations. We also prove that all known hyperkahler manifolds are never Kobayashi hyperbolic.
We consider (holomorphic) Lagrangian fibrations X->P^n that satisfy some natural hypotheses. We prove that there are only finitely many such Lagrangian fibrations up to deformation.
We study holomorphic symplectic manifolds which are fibred by abelian varieties. This structure is a higher dimensional analogue of an elliptic fibration on a K3 surface. We investigate when a holomorphic symplectic manifold is fibred in this way, and are led to several natural conjectures. We then study the geometry of these fibrations. The expectation is that this point of view will prove useful in understanding holomorphic symplectic manifolds, and possibly lead to a classification.
We use twisted Fourier-Mukai transforms to study the relation between an abelian fibration on a holomorphic symplectic manifold and its dual fibration. Our reasoning leads to an equivalence between the derived category of coherent sheaves on one space and the derived category of twisted sheaves on the other space.
The main result of this note essentially is that if the base and fibers of a compact fibration carry Hermitian metrics of positive holomorphic sectional curvature, then so does the total space of the fibration. The proof is based on the use of a warped product metric as in the work by Cheung in case of negative holomorphic sectional curvature, but differs in certain key aspects, e.g., in that it does not use the subadditivity property for holomorphic sectional curvature due to Grauert-Reckziegel and Wu.
In this paper, we pose several conjectures on structures and images of maximal rationally connected fibrations of smooth projective varieties admitting semi-positive holomorphic sectional curvature. Toward these conjectures, we prove that the canonical bundle of images of such fibrations is not big. Our proof gives a generalization of Yang's solution using RC positivity for Yau's conjecture. As an application, we show that any compact Kähler surface with semi-positive holomorphic sectional curvature is rationally connected, or a complex torus, or a ruled surface over an elliptic curve.
We conjecture that the relative Gromov-Witten potentials of elliptic fibrations are (cycle-valued) lattice quasi-Jacobi forms and satisfy a holomorphic anomaly equation. We prove the conjecture for the rational elliptic surface in all genera and curve classes numerically. The generating series are quasi-Jacobi forms for the lattice $E_8$. We also show the compatibility of the conjecture with the degeneration formula. As Corollary we deduce that the Gromov-Witten potentials of the Schoen Calabi-Yau threefold (relative to $\mathbb{P}^1$) are $E_8 \times E_8$ quasi-bi-Jacobi forms and satisfy a h…
A fibration is said to be isotrivial if all of its smooth fibres are isomorphic to a single fixed variety. We classify the elliptic K3 surfaces that are isotrivial, and use them to construct Lagrangian fibrations that are isotrivial. We then modify the construction to produce new examples of holomorphic symplectic orbifolds, that also admit isotrivial Lagrangian fibrations.
A Kodaira fibration is a compact, complex surface admitting a holomorphic submersion onto a complex curve, such that the fibers have nonconstant moduli. We consider Kodaira fibrations X with nontrivial invariant rational cohomology in degree 1, proving that if the dimension of the holomorphic invariants is 1 or 2, then X admits a branch covering over a product of curves inducing an isomorphism on rational cohomology in degree 1. We also study the class of Kodaira fibrations possessing a holomorphic section, and demonstrate that having a section imposes no restriction on possible monodromies.
We will use flat divisors, and canonically associated singular holomorphic foliations, to investigate some of the geometry of compact complex manifolds. The paper is mainly concerned with three distinct problems: the existence of fibrations, the topology of smooth hypersurfaces and the topological closure of transcendental leaves of foliations.
Lefschetz fibration is the symplectic analogue of stable holomorphic fibration in complex geometry. A 4-dimensional stable holomorphic fibration satisfies the famous Parshin-Arakelov inequality. In this note we present an analogous inequality for a 4-dimensional Lefschetz fibration.
Let $π:X\rightarrow\mathbb{P}^n$ be a (holomorphic) Lagrangian fibration that is very general in the moduli space of Lagrangian fibrations. We conjecture that the singular fibres in codimension one must be semistable degenerations of abelian varieties. We prove a partial result towards this conjecture, and describe an example that provides further evidence.
We establish a duality within the spectral sequence that governs the holomorphic double fibration transform. It has immediate application to the questions of injectivity and range characterization for this transform. We discuss some key examples and an improved duality that holds in the Hermitian holomorphic case.
In this talk we discuss the description of the moduli space of principal G-bundles on an elliptic fibration X-->S in terms of cameral covers and their distinguished Prym varieties. We emphasize the close relationship between this problem and the integrability of Hitchin's system and its generalizations. The discussion roughly parallels that of [D2], but additional examples are included and some important steps of the argument are illustrated. Some of the applications to heterotic/F-theory duality were described in the accompanying ICMP talk (hep-th/9802093).
We consider fibrations of genus 2 over complex surfaces. The purpose of this paper is primarily to provide a geometric description of the possible structures of the fibration on a neighborhood of a singular fiber. In particular it is shown that the "geometric data" of the singular fiber determines the fibration on its neighborhood up to a transversely holomorphic $C^{\infty}$-diffeomorphism. The method employed is quite flexible and it applies to good extent to fibrations of arbitrary genus.
In the definition of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds the condition of being simply connected can be replaced by vanishing irregularity. We discuss finite quotients X of complex tori where the space of reflexive 2-forms is generated by a holomorphic symplectic form, and their Lagrangian fibrations. Neither X nor the base can be smooth unless X is a 2-torus.
Motivated by the study of rationally connected fibrations (and the MRC quotient) we study different notions of birationally simple fibrations. We say a fibration of smooth projective varieties is Chow constant if pushforward induces an isomorphism on the Chow group of 0-cycles. Likewise we say a fibration is cohomologically constant if pullback induces an isomorphism on holomorphic p-forms for all p. Our main result is the construction of maximal Chow constant and cohomologically constant fibrations. The paper is largely self contained and we prove a number of basic properties of these fibrati…
Let $X$ be a complex manifold, $π: E \rightarrow X$ a locally trivial holomorphic fibration with fiber $F$, and $\mathfrak{g}$ a Lie algebra with an invariant symmetric form. We associate to this data a holomorphic prefactorization algebra $\mathcal{F}_{\mathfrak{g}, π}$ on $X$ in the formalism of Costello-Gwilliam. When $X=\mathbb{C}$, $\mathfrak{g}$ is simple, and $F$ is a smooth affine variety, we extract from $\mathcal{F}_{\mathfrak{g}, π}$ a vertex algebra which is a vacuum module for the universal central extension of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g} \otimes H^{0}(F, \mathcal{O})[z,z^{-1}]$…
We will prove that given a genus-2 fibration $f: X \rightarrow C$ on a smooth projective surface $X$ such that $b_1(X)=b_1(C)+2$, the fundamental group of $X$ is almost isomorphic to $π_1(C) \times π_1(E)$, where $E$ is an elliptic curve. We will also verify the Shafarevich Conjecture on holomorphic convexity of the universal cover of surfaces $X$ with genus-2 fibration $X\rightarrow C$ such that $b_1(X)>b_1(C)$.
Let $M\stackrelπ\arrow X$ be a principal elliptic fibration over a Kaehler base $X$. We assume that the Kaehler form on $X$ is lifted to an exact form on $M$ (such fibrations are called positive). Examples of these are regular Vaisman manifolds (in particular, the regular Hopf manifolds) and Calabi-Eckmann manifolds. Assume that $\dim M > 2$. Using the Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence, we prove that all stable bundles on $M$ are flat on the fibers of the elliptic fibration. This is used to show that all stable vector bundles on $M$ take form $L\otimes π^* B_0$, where $B_0$ is a stable bundle o…
We briefly review the formal picture in which a Calabi-Yau $n$-fold is the complex analogue of an oriented real $n$-manifold, and a Fano with a fixed smooth anticanonical divisor is the analogue of a manifold with boundary, motivating a holomorphic Casson invariant counting bundles on a Calabi-Yau 3-fold. We develop the deformation theory necessary to obtain the virtual moduli cycles of \cite{LT}, \cite{BF} in moduli spaces of stable sheaves whose higher obstruction groups vanish. This gives, for instance, virtual moduli cycles in Hilbert schemes of curves in $\Pee^3$, and Donaldson-- and Grom…
We classify singular fibres over general points of the discriminant locus of projective complex Lagrangian fibrations on 4-dimensional holomorphic symplectic manifolds. The singular fibre F is the following either one: F is isomorphic to the product of an elliptic curve and a Kodaira singular fibre up to finite unramified covering or F is a normal crossing variety consisting of several copies of a minimal elliptic ruled surface of which the dual graph is Dynkin diagram of type A_n, $\tilde{A_n}$, $\tilde{D_n}$ or D_n.
Let $L$ be a (semi)-positive line bundle over a Kahler manifold, $X$, fibered over a complex manifold $Y$. Assuming the fibers are compact and non-singular we prove that the hermitian vector bundle $E$ over $Y$ whose fibers over points $y$ are the spaces of global sections over $X_y$ to $L\gr K_{X/Y}$ endowed with the $L^2$-metric is (semi)-positive in the sense of Nakano. We also discuss various applications, among them a partial result on a conjecture of Griffiths on the positivity of ample bundles. This is a revised and much expanded version of a previous preprint with the title `` Bergman …
Let X be a compact hyperkähler manifold containing a complex torus L as a Lagrangian subvariety. Beauville posed the question whether X admits a Lagrangian fibration with fibre L. We show that this is indeed the case if X is not projective. If X is projective we find an almost holomorphic Lagrangian fibration with fibre L under additional assumptions on the pair (X, L), which can be formulated in topological or deformation-theoretic terms. Moreover, we show that for any such almost holomorphic Lagrangian fibration there exists a smooth good minimal model, i.e., a hyperkähler manifold birationa…
In this paper, we consider a special relative Kähler fibration that satisfies a homogenous Monge-Ampère equation, which is called a Monge-Ampère fibration. There exist two canonical types of generalized Weil-Petersson metrics on the base complex manifold of the fibration. For the second generalized Weil-Petersson metric, we obtain an explicit curvature formula and prove that the holomorphic bisectional curvature is non-positive, the holomorphic sectional curvature, the Ricci curvature, and the scalar curvature are all bounded from above by a negative constant. For a holomorphic vector bundle o…
This paper is devoted to the study of a certain class of principal bundles on del Pezzo surfaces, which were introduced and studied by Friedman and Morgan in \cite{FMdP}: The two authors showed that there exists a unique principal bundle (up to isomorphism) on a given (Gorenstein) del Pezzo surface satisfying certain properties. We call these bundles {\em almost regular}. In turn, we study them in families. In this case, the existence and the moduli of these bundles are governed by the cohomology groups of an abelian sheaf ${\mathscr A}$: On a given del Pezzo fibration, the existence of an alm…
In analogy with the holomorphic case, we compare the topology of Milnor fibrations associated to a meromorphic germ f/g : the local Milnor fibrations given on Milnor tubes over punctured discs around the critical values of f/g, and the Milnor fibration on a sphere.
Given a compact complex manifold X of dimension n, we define a bimeromorphic invariant $κ_+(X)$ as the maximum p for which there is a saturated line subsheaf L of the sheaf of holomorphic p forms whose Kodaira dimension $κ(L)$ equals p. We call X special if $κ_+(X)=0$. We give some evidence that this condition characterizes X to have identically vanishing Kobayashi pseudometric. We use the well-known construction of F. Campana to give, for each projective X a canonical fibration $f: X\to Y$ holomorphic outside a proper subvariety of Y and whose general fibers are special. We show that the inhe…
In this note we show that if a compact Kahler manifold with trivial canonical bundle is the total space of a holomorphic fibration without singular fibers, then the fibration is a holomorphic fiber bundle. In the algebraic case, the fibration becomes trivial after a finite base change.
In this paper we show that a uniruled manifold with a split tangent bundle admits almost holomorphic fibrations that are related to the splitting. We analyse these fibrations in detail in several special cases, this yields new results about the integrability of the direct factors and the universal covering of the manifold.
