In this note we investigate three new pencils of symmetric surfaces in complex projective three-space. These have degree 6, 8 resp. 12 and are invariant under the action of subgroups of SO(4) containing the Heisenberg group. The pencils of degree 6 and 12 are invariant under the action of bigger groups, precisely under the action of the reflection groups F_4 resp. H_4. We compute equations for the generators of the pencils and describe the base locus of each pencil. We find also the singular surfaces and their number of singularities, which are, in fact, ordinary double points. In degree 12, we get a surface with 600 nodes. This confirms a conjecture of V. Goryounov and presents a new lower bound for the maximal number of nodes of such a surface.
The three pencils of K3 surfaces of minimal discriminant whose general element covers at least one Enriques surface are Kondō's pencils I and II, and the Apéry--Fermi pencil. We enumerate and investigate all Enriques surfaces covered by their general elements.
We consider relatively minimal fibrations of curves of genus two on rational surfaces whose Picard numbers are not maximal. By birational morphisms, such fibred surfaces are interpreted as pencils of plane curves. We show that only four are canonical, among a variety of possible models. For each canonical pencil, we give an example with trivial Mordell-Weil group.
We study linear pencils of curves on normal surface singularities. Using the minimal good resolution of the pencil, we describe the topological type of generic elements of the pencil and characterize the behaviour of special elements. Then we show that the critical locus associated to the pencil is linked to the special elements. This gives a decomposition of the critical locus through the minimal good resolution and as a consequence, information on the topological type of the critical locus.
We give more details to our examples in [9] of K3 surfaces over C such that they have infinite automorphism group but it preserves some elliptic pencil of the K3
We study a pencil of K3 surfaces that appeared in the $2$-loop diagrams in Bhabha scattering. By analysing in detail the Picard lattice of the general and special members of the pencil, we identify the pencil with the celebrated Apéry--Fermi pencil, that was related to Apéry's proof of the irrationality of $ζ(3)$ through the work of F. Beukers, C. Peters and J. Stienstra. The same pencil appears miraculously in different and seemingly unrelated physical contexts.
We prove that the bicanonical map of a surfaces of general S type with p_g=q=0 is non birational if there exists a pencil on S whose general member is an hyperelliptic curve of genus 3.
We classify all the irrational pencils over the surfaces of general type with p=q=2. This classification adds a new evidence to a Catanese conjecture which states that if S has p=q=2 but no irrational pencils then it is the double cover of a P.P. Abelian variety branched on a reduced divisor linearly equivalent to twice a theta divisor.
Mondromy and deformation-and-specialization arguments are used to produce a pencil of Enriques surfaces with no section and index one. The same technique completes the proof that the witness curves in "Rational connectivity ..." depend on the relative dimension.
Green's conjecture is proved for smooth curves C lying on a rational surface S with an anticanonical pencil, under some mild hypotheses on the line bundle L defined by C. Constancy of Clifford dimension, Clifford index and gonality of curves in the linear system |L| is also obtained.
We study the birational rigidity problem for smooth Mori fibrations on del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1 and 2. For degree 1 we obtain a complete description of rigid and non-rigid cases.
The quartic hypersurfaces in P^4 invariant under the standard representation of S_6 form a linear pencil. We prove that a general member of this pencil is not rational.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective surface such that linear and numerical equivalence of divisors on $X$ coincide and let $σ\subseteq |D|$ be a linear pencil on $X$ with integral general fibers. A fiber of $σ$ will be called special if either it is not integral or it has non-generic multiplicity at some of the base points (including the infinitely near ones) of the pencil. In this note we provide an algorithm to compute the integral components of the special fibers of $σ$.
For every smooth quartic threefold, we classify all pencils on it whose general element is an irreducible surface birational to a smooth surface of Kodaira dimension zero.
We study a Seshadri constant at a general point on a rational surface whose anticanonical linear system contains a pencil. First, we describe a Seshadri constant of an ample line bundle on such a rational surface explicitly by the numerical data of the ample line bundle. Secondly, we classify log del Pezzo surfaces which are special in terms of the Seshadri constants of the anticanonical divisors when the anticanonical degree is between 4 and 9.
A K3-surface is a (smooth) surface which is simply connected and has trivial canonical bundle. In these notes we investigate three particular pencils of K3-surfaces with maximal Picard number. More precisely the general member in each pencil has Picard number 19 and each pencil contains four surfaces with Picard number 20. These surfaces are obtained as the minimal resolution of quotients X/G, where $G\subset SO(4,\R)$ is some finite subgroup and $X\subset ¶_3(\C)$ denotes a G-invariant surface. The singularities of X/G come from fix points of G on X or from singularities of X. In any case the…
Let $f:S \fr B$ be a surface fibration with fibres of genus 5. We find a linear relation between the fundamental invariants of the surface. Namely $K_f^2=χ_f+N$ where $N$ is the number of trigonal fibres. Our proof is based on the analysis of the relative canonical algebra $\cal{R}(f)$.
We classify the minimal surfaces of general type with $K^2 \leq 4χ-8$ whose canonical map is composed with a pencil, up to a finite number of families. More precisely we prove that there is exactly one irreducible family for each value of $χ\gg 0$, $4χ-10 \leq K^2 \leq 4χ-8$. All these surfaces are complete intersections in a toric $4-$fold and bidouble covers of Hirzebruch surfaces. The surfaces with $K^2=4χ-8$ were previously constructed by Catanese as bidouble covers of $\PP^1 \times \PP^1$.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective K3 surface over complex numbers and $C$ be an ample curve on $X$. In this paper we will study the semistability of the Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundle $E_{C, A}$ associated to a line bundle $A$ ion $C$ such that $|A|$ is a pencil on $C$ and computes the Clifford index of $C$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for $E_{C, A}$ being semistable.
Ulrich bundles are the simplest sheaves from the viewpoint of cohomology tables. Eisenbud and Schreyer conjectured that every projective variety carries an Ulrich bundle, which means it has the same cone of cohomology table as the projective space of same dimension. In this paper we show the existence of stable rank 2 Ulrich bundle on rational surfaces with an anticanonical pencil, under a mild Brill-Noether assumption by using Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles. Also we see that each of those surfaces carries its Chow form given by the Pfaffian of skew-symmetric morphism coming from an Ulrich bundle.
We explicitly construct Brill--Noether general $K3$ surfaces of genus $4,6$ and $8$ having the maximal number of elliptic pencils of degrees $3, 4$ and $5$, respectively, and study their moduli spaces and moduli maps to the moduli space of curves. As an application we prove the existence of Brill--Noether general $K3$ surfaces of genus $4$ and $6$ without stable Lazarsfeld--Mukai bundles of minimal $c_2$.
We prove that there exists a pencil of Enriques surfaces defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ with non-algebraic integral Hodge classes of non-torsion type. This gives the first example of a threefold with the trivial Chow group of zero-cycles on which the integral Hodge conjecture fails. As an application, we construct a fourfold which gives the negative answer to a classical question of Murre on the universality of the Abel-Jacobi maps in codimension three.
We use vector-bundle techniques in order to compute $\dim W^1_d(C)$ where $C$ is general and smooth in a linear system on an unnodal Enriques surface. We furthermore find new examples of smooth curves on Enriques surfaces with an infinite number of $g^1_{\gon(C)}$'s.
Given a generic $K3$ surface $Y_k$ of the Apéry-Fermi pencil, we use the Kneser-Nishiyama technique to determine all its non isomorphic elliptic fibrations. These computations lead to determine those fibrations with 2-torsion sections T. We classify the fibrations such that the translation by T gives a Shioda-Inose structure. The other fibrations correspond to a K3 surface identified by it transcendental lattice. The same problem is solved for a singular member $Y_2$ of the family showing the differences with the generic case. In conclusion we put our results in the context of relations betwee…
We prove a criterion of nonsingularity of a complete intersection of two fiberwise quadrics in a scroll over $P^1$. As a corollary we derive the following addition to the Alexeev theorem on rationality of standard Del Pezzo fibrations of degree 4 over $P^1$: we prove that any fibration of this kind with the topological Euler characteristic -4 is rational.
Let $S$ be a smooth projective complex algebraic surface and $f\, :\, S\, \longrightarrow\, {\mathbb C}{\mathbb P}^2$ a finite map. Consider a pencil of hyperplane sections on ${\mathbb C}{\mathbb P}^2$ and pull it back to $S$. We address the question whether such a pencil is a Lefschetz pencil on $S$.
We compute the transcendental lattices of the singular K3 surfaces belonging to three pencils of K3 surfaces, namely the Apéry-Fermi pencil with transcendental lattice $U\oplus \langle 12 \rangle$, the Verrill's pencil with transcendental lattice $U \oplus \langle 6 \rangle$ and another pencil linked to Verrill's pencil with transcendental lattice $U \oplus \langle 24 \rangle$. Many corollaries are deduced. For example, some singular K3 surfaces belong to different pencils or are Kummer surfaces of K3 surfaces of another pencil.
Let S be a smooth, projective surface of Picard rank 1 and very ample generator embedding S into P^n. Let C be a smooth curve in O(m) for m \geq 5. We prove that any base-point free, complete g^r_d on C for r\in\{1,2\} and d small enough is cut out by a hyperplane section restricted to a multisecant (n-r-1)-plane.
We show that on a certain hypersurface in P3 there is a (q3 + q2 + q + 1)q+1-symmetric configuration (resp. a ((q3 + 1)(q2 + 1)q+1, (q3 + 1)(q + 1)q2+1)) -configuration) made up of the rational points over Fq (resp. over Fq2) and the lines over Fq (resp. the lines over Fq2). We also determine the structure of a Lefschetz pencil made by using a line from these lines.
We study the hypergeometric functions associated to five one-parameter deformations of Delsarte K3 quartic hypersurfaces in projective space. We compute all of their Picard--Fuchs differential equations; we count points using Gauss sums and rewrite this in terms of finite field hypergeometric sums; then we match up each differential equation to a factor of the zeta function, and we write this in terms of global L-functions. This computation gives a complete, explicit description of the motives for these pencils in terms of hypergeometric motives.
We study smoothing of pencils of curves on surfaces with normal crossings. As a consequence we show that the canonical divisor of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ is not pseudo-effective in some range, implying that $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{12,6},\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{12,7},\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{13,4}$ and $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{14,3}$ are uniruled. We provide upper bounds for the Kodaira dimension of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{12,8}$ and $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{16}$. We also show that the moduli of $(4g+5)$-pointed hyperelliptic curves $\mathcal{H}_{g,4g+5}$ is uniruled. Together with a re…
Related to the classification of regular foliations in a complex algebraic surface, we address the problem of classifying the complex surfaces which admit a flat pencil of foliations. On this matter, a classification of flat pencils which admit foliations with a first integral of genus one and isolated singularities was done by Lins Neto. In this work, we complement Lins Neto's work, by obtaining the classification of compact complex surfaces which have a pencil with an invariant tangency set.
In this paper, the Euler characteristic formula for projective logarithmic minimal degenerations of surfaces with Kodaira dimension zero over a 1-dimensional complex disk is proved under a reasonable assumption and as its application, the singularity of logarithmic minimal degenerations are determined in the abelian or hyperelliptic case. By globalizing this local analysis of singular fibres via generalized canonical bundle formulae due to Fujino-Mori, we bound the number of singular fibres of abelian fibred Calabi-Yau threefolds from above, which was previously done by Oguiso in the potentiall…
We classify all pencils on a general weighted hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}(1,a_{1},a_{2},a_{3},a_{4})$ of degree $\sum_{i=1}^{4}a_{i}$ whose general members are surfaces of Kodaira dimension zero.
It is proved that on a smooth algebraic variety, fibered into cubic surfaces over the projective line and sufficiently ``twisted'' over the base, there is only one pencil of rational surfaces -- that is, this very pencil of cubics. In particular, this variety is non-rational; moreover, it can not be fibered into rational curves. The proof is obtained by means of the method of maximal singularities.
In 1981 W.L. Edge discovered and studied a pencil $\mathcal{C}$ of highly symmetric genus $6$ projective curves with remarkable properties. Edge's work was based on an 1895 paper of A. Wiman. Both papers were written in the satisfying style of 19th century algebraic geometry. In this paper and its sequel [FL], we consider $\mathcal{C}$ from a more modern, conceptual perspective, whereby explicit equations are reincarnated as geometric objects.
The Wiman-Edge pencil is a pencil of genus $6$ curves for which the generic member has automorphism group the alternating group $\mathfrak{A}_5$. There is a unique smooth member, the Wiman sextic, with automorphism group the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_5$. Farb and Looijenga proved that the monodromy of the Wiman-Edge pencil is commensurable with the Hilbert modular group $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{5}])$. In this note, we give a complete description of the monodromy by congruence conditions modulo $4$ and $5$. The congruence condition modulo $4$ is new, and this answers a question of Fa…
Let six points $1, ...6$ lie in general position in the real projective plane and consider the pencil of nodal cubics based at these points, with node at one of them, say 1. This pencil has five reducible cubics. We call combinatorial cubic a topological type (cubic, points), and combinatorial pencil the cyclic sequence of five combinatorial reducible cubics. Up to the action of the symmetric group $S_5$ on $\{2, ...6\}$, there are seven possible combinatorial pencils with node at 1. Consider now the set of six pencils obtained, making the node to be $1, ...6$. Up to the action of S_6 on ${1, …
Two-dimensional linear spaces of symmetric matrices are classified by Segre symbols. After reviewing known facts from linear algebra and projective geometry, we address new questions motivated by algebraic statistics and optimization. We compute the reciprocal curve and the maximum likelihood degrees, and we study strata of pencils in the Grassmannian.

We prove that a complex surface S with irregularity q(S)=5 that has no irrational pencil of genus >1 has geometric genus p_g(S)>7. As a consequence, one is able to classify minimal surfaces S of general type with q(S)=5 and p_g(S)<8. This result is a negative answer, for q=5, to the question asked in arXiv:0811.0390 of the existence of surfaces of general type with irregularity q>3 that have no irrational pencil of genus >1 and with the lowest possible geometric genus p_g=2q-3. This gives some evidence for the conjecture that the only irregular surface with no irrational pencil of genus >1 and…
Let $S$ be a K3 surface, $C$ a smooth curve on $S$ with $\mathcal{O}_S(C)$ ample, and $A$ a base-point free $g^2_d$ on $C$ of small degree. We use Lazarsfeld--Mukai bundles to prove that $A$ is cut out by the global sections of a rank 1 torsion-free sheaf $\mathcal{G}$ on $S$. Furthermore, we show that $c_1(\mathcal{G})$ with one exception is adapted to $\mathcal{O}_S(C)$ and satisfies $\mathrm{Cliff}(c_1(\mathcal{G})_{|C})\leq\mathrm{Cliff}(A)$, thereby confirming a conjecture posed by Donagi and Morrison. We also show that the same methods can be used to give a simple proof of the conjecture…
Let $(S,D)$ be a minimal log pair of general type with $S$ a smooth projective surface and $D$ a simple normal corssing reduced divisor on $S$. We assume that its log canonial linear system $|K_S+D|$ is composed of a penciel, let $f\colon S\to B$ be the fiberation induced by the linear system $|K_S+D|$ and $F$ be a general fiber of $f$. Let $b$ (resp. $g$) be the genus of the base curve $B$ (resp. general fiber $F$) and $k=D\cdot F$ the intersection number. We show that 1. If $k>0$ and $b\geq 2$ then $2\leq g+k \leq 3$, when $g+k=3$ we have $b=2$ and $h^1(S,K_S+D)=0$. 2. Suppose $p_a(D)\leq 2(…
The paper studies a relation between fundamental group of the complement to a plane singular curve and the orbifold pencils containing it. The main tool is the use of Albanese varieties of cyclic covers ramified along such curves. Our results give sufficient conditions for a plane singular curve to belong to an orbifold pencil, i.e. a pencil of plane curves with multiple fibers inducing a map onto an orbifold curve whose orbifold fundamental group is non trivial. We construct an example of a cyclic cover of the projective plane which is an abelian surface isomorphic to the Jacobian of a curve …
The sextic plane curves that are invariant under the standard action of the icosahedral group on the projective plane make up a pencil of genus ten curves (spanned by a sum of six lines and a three times a conic). This pencil was first considered in a note by R.~M.~Winger in 1925 and is nowadays named after him. We gave this a modern treatment and proved among other things that it contains essentially every smooth genus ten curve with icosahedral symmetry. We here consider the monodromy group and the period map naturally defined by the icosahedral symmetry. We showed that this monodromy group …
In the present note we show that any surface of general type with $p_g=2$,$q=1$ and non-birational bicanonical map has a pencil of curves of genus 2. Combining this result with previous ones, one obtains thatan irregular surface $S$ of general type with $χ(S)\geq 2$ and non-birational bicanonical map has a pencil of curves of genus 2.
In this note, we give a list of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in weighted projective 4-spaces with the property that a hypersurface contains naturally a pencil of K3 variety. For completeness we also obtain a similar list in the case K3 hypersurfaces in weighted projective 3-spaces. The first list significantly enlarges the list of K3-fibrations of \KlemmLercheMayr~ which has been obtained on some assumptions on the weights. Our lists are expected to correspond to examples of the so-called heterotic-type II duality \KachruVafa\KachruSilverstein.
We construct two pencils of bielliptic curves of genus three and genus five. The first pencil is associated with a general abelian surface with a polarization of type $(1,2)$. The second pencil is related to the first by an unramified double cover, the Prym variety of which is canonically isomorphic to the Jacobian of a very general curve of genus two. Our results are obtained by analyzing suitable elliptic fibrations on the associated Kummer surfaces and rational double covers among them.
I construct some smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds in characteristic two and three that do not lift to characteristic zero. These threefolds are pencils of supersingular K3-surfaces. The construction depends on Moret-Bailly's pencil of abelian surfaces and Katsura's analysis of generalized Kummer surfaces. The threefold in characteristic two turns out to be nonrigid.
In this short note we prove two theorems, the first one is a sharpening of a result of Lange and Sernesi: the discriminant curve W of a general Abelian surface $A$ endowed with an irreducible polarization $D$ of type $(1,3)$ is an irreducible curve of degree $18$ whose singularities are exactly $36$ nodes and $72$ cusps. Moreover, we analyze the degeneration of the discriminant curve $W$ and its singularities as $A$ tends to the product of two equal elliptic curves. The second theorem, using the first one in order to prove a transversality assertion, shows that the general element of a family …
This note gives an explicit example of transcendental Brauer-Manin obstruction to weak approximation. It has two features which the only previously known example of such obstruction did not have: the class in the Brauer group which is responsible for the obstruction is divisible, and the underlying algebraic variety is an elliptic surface (a K3 surface).
We prove a correspondence theorem for singular tropical surfaces in real three space, which recovers singular algebraic surfaces in an appropriate toric three-fold that tropicalize to a given singular tropical surface. Furthermore, we develop a three-dimensional version of Mikhalkin's lattice path algorithm that enumerates singular tropical surfaces passing through an appropriate configuration of points in real three space. As application we show that there are pencils of real surfaces of degree $d$ in projective three space containing at least $(3/2)d^3+O(d^2)$ singular surfaces, which is asy…
