Consider the Lienard system $ u'' + f(u) u' + g(u) = 0$ with a center at the origin 0. In the case where the period function $T$ is monotonic, we examine periodic solutions of the perturbed equation $ u'' + a(u)u' + f(u) = εh(t)$. {\it Key Words:} perturbed systems, Lienard equation, polynomial systems.
The goal of the article is to characterize the conservative homeomorphisms of a closed orientable surface $S$ of genus $\geq 2$, that have finitely many periodic points. By conservative, we mean a map with no wandering point. As a particular case, when $S$ is furnished with a symplectic form, we characterize the symplectic diffeomorphisms of $S$ with finitely many periodic points.
For area-preserving Hénon-like maps and their compositions, we consider smooth perturbations that keep the reversibility of the initial maps but destroy their conservativity. For constructing such perturbations, we use two methods, the original method based on reversible properties of maps written in the so-called cross-form, and the classical Quispel-Roberts method based on a variation of involutions of the initial map. We study symmetry breaking bifurcations of symmetric periodic points in reversible families containing quadratic conservative orientable and nonorientable Hénon maps as well a…
Weakly damped mechanical systems under small periodic forcing tend to exhibit periodic response in a close vicinity of certain periodic orbits of their conservative limit. Specifically, amplitude frequency plots for the conservative limit have often been noted, both numerically and experimentally, to serve as backbone curves for the near resonance peaks of the forced response. In other cases, such a relationship between the unforced and forced response was not observed. Here we provide a systematic mathematical analysis that predicts which members of conservative periodic orbit families will s…
In the first part of this text we give a survey of the properties satisfied by the C1-generic conservative diffeomorphisms of compact surfaces. The main result that we will discuss is that a C1-generic conservative diffeomorphism of a connected compact surface is transitive. It is obtain as a consequence of a connecting lemma for pseudo-orbits. In the last parts we expose some recent developments of the C1-perturbation technics and the proof of this connecting lemma. We are not aimed to deal with technicalities nor to give the finest available versions of these results. Besides this theory exi…
We study the effect of time-dependent, non-conservative perturbations on the dynamics along homoclinic orbits to a normally hyperbolic invariant manifold. We assume that the unperturbed system is Hamiltonian, and the normally hyperbolic invariant manifold is parametrized via action-angle coordinates. The homoclinic excursions can be described via the scattering map, which gives the future asymptotic of an orbit as a function of the past asymptotic. We provide explicit formulas, in terms of convergent integrals, for the perturbed scattering map expressed in action-angle coordinates. We illustra…
This paper formalize the existence's proof of first-integrals for any second order ODE, allowing to discriminate periodic orbits. Up to the author's knowledge, such a powerful result is not available in the literature providing a tool to determine periodic orbits/limit cycles in the most general scenario.
We prove that any perturbation of the symplectic part of the derivative of a Poisson diffeomorphism can be realized as the derivative of a $C^1$-close Poisson diffeomorphism. We also show that a similar property holds for the Poincaré map of a Hamiltonian on a Poisson manifold. These results are the conservative counterparts of the Franks lemma, a perturbation tool used in several contexts most notably in the theory of smooth dynamical systems.
In this work we prove that each C^r conservative diffeomorphism with a pair of hyperbolic periodic points of co-index one can be C^1-approximated by C^r conservative diffeomorphisms having a blender.
We consider reversible non-conservative perturbations of the conservative cubic Hénon maps $H_3^{\pm}: \bar x = y, \bar y = -x + M_1 + M_2 y \pm y^3$ and study their influence on the 1:3 resonance, i.e. bifurcations of fixed points with eigenvalues $e^{\pm i 2π/3}$. It follows from the work by Dullin and Meiss, this resonance is degenerate for $M_1=0, M_2=-1$ when the corresponding fixed point is elliptic. We show that bifurcations of this point under reversible perturbations give rise to four 3-periodic orbits, two of them are symmetric and conservative (saddles in the case of map $H_3^+$ and…
A number of techniques have been developed to perturb the dynamics of $C^1$-diffeomorphisms and to modify the properties of their periodic orbits. For instance, one can locally linearize the dynamics, change the tangent dynamics, or create local homoclinic orbits. These techniques have been crucial for the understanding of $C^1$ dynamics, but their most precise forms have mostly been shown in the dissipative setting. This work extends these results to volume-preserving and especially symplectic systems. These tools underlie our study of the entropy of $C^1$-diffeomorphisms in (arxiv:1606.01765…
A recent model of Ariel et al. [1] for explaining the observation of Lévy walks in swarming bacteria suggests that self-propelled, elongated particles in a periodic array of regular vortices perform a super-diffusion that is consistent with Lévy walks. The equations of motion, which are reversible in time but not volume preserving, demonstrate a new route to L'evy walking in chaotic systems. Here, the dynamics of the model is studied both analytically and numerically. It is shown that the apparent super-diffusion is due to "sticking" of trajectories to elliptic islands, regions of quasi-period…
We study the structure of the set of harmonic solutions to perturbed nonautonomous, T-periodic, separated variables ODEs on manifolds. The perturbing term is allowed to contain a finite delay and to be T-periodic in time.
We study the dynamics of an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) model, under the Lennard-Jones force with non-linear damping, and harmonic forcing. We establish the bifurcation diagrams for equilibria in a conservative system. Particularly, we present conditions that guarantee the local existence of saddle-node bifurcations. By using the Melnikov method, the region in the space parameters where the persistence of homoclinic orbits is determined in a non-conservative system.
Any $C^d$ conservative map $f$ of the $d$-dimensional unit ball $\mathbb B^d$ can be realized by renormalized iteration of a $C^d$ perturbation of identity: there exists a conservative diffeomorphism of $\mathbb B^d$, arbitrarily close to identity in the $C^d$ topology, that has a periodic disc on which the return dynamics after a $C^d$ change of coordinates is exactly $f$.
We prove the genericity of the shadowing and periodic shadowing properties for both conservative and dissipative homeomorphisms on a compact connected manifold. Our proof is valid for topological manifolds and still holds in the dissipative case. As a consequence of this result, we establish the genericity of the specification property, the average shadowing property and the asymptotic average shadowing property in the conservative case.
We consider the planar circular restricted three-body problem (PCRTBP), as a model for the motion of a spacecraft relative to the Earth-Moon system. We focus on the Lagrange equilibrium points $L_1$ and $L_2$. There are families of Lyapunov periodic orbits around either $L_1$ or $L_2$, forming Lyapunov manifolds. There also exist homoclinic orbits to the Lyapunov manifolds around either $L_1$ or $L_2$, as well as heteroclinic orbits between the Lyapunov manifold around $L_1$ and the one around $L_2$. The motion along the homoclinic/heteroclinic orbits can be described via the scattering map, w…
We consider a Kepler problem in dimension two or three, with a time-dependent $T$-periodic perturbation. We prove that for any prescribed positive integer $N$, there exist at least $N$ periodic solutions (with period $T$) as long as the perturbation is small enough. Here the solutions are understood in a general sense as they can have collisions. The concept of generalized solutions is defined intrinsically and it coincides with the notion obtained in Celestial Mechanics via the theory of regularization of collisions.
Frequency responses of multi-degree-of-freedom mechanical systems with weak forcing and damping can be studied as perturbations from their conservative limit. Specifically, recent results show how bifurcations near resonances can be predicted analytically from conservative families of periodic orbits (nonlinear normal modes). However, the stability of forced-damped motions is generally determined a posteriori via numerical simulations. In this paper, we present analytic results on the stability of periodic orbits that perturb from conservative nonlinear normal modes. In contrast with prior app…
For system of two ordinary differential equations of the second order representing autonomous non-conservative holonomic mechanical system, in case of dynamics such as one-frequency periodical oscillations, is found integrated invariant of movement.
We study forced oscillations on differentiable manifolds which are globally defined as the zero set of appropriate smooth maps in some Euclidean spaces. Given a T-periodic perturbative forcing field, we consider the two different scenarios of a nontrivial unperturbed force field and of perturbation of the zero field. We provide simple, degree-theoretic conditions for the existence of branches of T-periodic solutions. We apply our construction to a class of second order Differential-Algebraic Equations.
We apply topological methods to the study of the set of harmonic solutions of periodically perturbed autonomous ordinary differential equations on differentiable manifolds, allowing the perturbing term to contain a fixed delay. In the crucial step, in order to cope with the delay, we define a suitable (infinite dimensional) notion of Poincaré $T$-translation operator and prove a formula that, in the unperturbed case, allows the computation of its fixed point index.
A one-parameter family of time-reversible systems on $\mathbb{T}^3$ is considered. It is shown that the dynamics is not conservative, namely the attractor and repeller intersect but not coincide. We explain this as the manifestation of the so-called mixed dynamics phenomenon which corresponds to a persistent intersection of the closure of stable periodic orbits and the closure of the completely unstable periodic orbits. We search for the stable and unstable periodic orbits indirectly, by finding non-conservative saddle periodic orbits and heteroclinic connections between them. In this way, we …
In this paper we discuss properties of the KdV equation under periodic boundary conditions, especially those which are important to study perturbations of the equation. Next we review what is known now about long-time behaviour of solutions for perturbed KdV equations.
We employ the Craig-Wayne-Bourgain method to construct quasi-periodic solutions for delayed perturbation differential equations. Our results not only implement the existing literatures on constructing quasi-periodic solutions for DDE by the KAM method and space splitting technique, but also provide an example of application of multi-scale analysis method to non-selfadjoint problem.
We study the existence of periodic solutions in a class of planar Filippov systems obtained from non-autonomous periodic perturbations of reversible piecewise smooth differential systems. It is assumed that the unperturbed system presents a simple two-fold cycle, which is characterized by a closed trajectory connecting a visible two-fold singularity to itself. It is shown that under certain generic conditions the perturbed system has sliding and crossing periodic solutions. In order to get our results, Melnikov's ideas were applied together with tools from the geometric singular perturbation t…
In this paper, we consider a Diophantine quasi-periodic time-dependent analytic perturbation of a convex integrable Hamiltonian system, and we prove a result of stability of the action variables for an exponentially long interval of time. This extends known results for periodic time-dependent perturbations, and partly solves a long standing conjecture of Chirikov and Lochak. We also obtain improved stability estimates close to resonances or far away from resonances, and a more general result without any Diophantine condition.
For every $r\in\mathbb{N}_{\geq2}\cup\{\infty\}$, we prove the $C^r$-closing lemma for general and conservative partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional center bundle. In particular, it implies periodic points are dense for $C^r$-generic conservative partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional center bundle.
This work focuses on the existence of quasi-periodic solutions for ordinary and delay differential equations (ODEs and DDEs for short) with an elliptic-type degenerate equilibrium point under quasi-periodic perturbations. We prove that under appropriate hypotheses there exist quasi-periodic solutions for perturbed ODEs and DDEs near the equilibrium point for most parameter values, then apply these results to the delayed van der Pol's oscillator with zero-Hopf singularity.
We develop a theory which allows making qualitative conclusions about the dynamics of both monotone and non-monotone Moreau sweeping processes. Specifically, we first prove that any sweeping processes with almost periodic monotone right-hand-sides admits a globally exponentially stable almost periodic solution. And then we describe the extent to which such a globally stable solution persists under non-monotone perturbations.
We describe all Lyapunov spectra that can be obtained by perturbing the derivatives along periodic orbits of a diffeomorphism. The description is expressed in terms of the finest dominated splitting and Lyapunov exponents that appear in the limit of a sequence of periodic orbits, and involves the majorization partial order. Among the applications, we give a simple criterion for the occurrence of universal dynamics.
We study the 1:4 resonance for the conservative cubic Hénon maps $\mathbf{C}_\pm$ with positive and negative cubic term. These maps show up different bifurcation structures both for fixed points with eigenvalues $\pm i$ and for 4-periodic orbits. While for $\mathbf{C}_-$ the 1:4 resonance unfolding has the so-called Arnold degeneracy (the first Birkhoff twist coefficient equals (in absolute value) to the first resonant term coefficient), the map $\mathbf{C}_+$ has a different type of degeneracy because the resonant term can vanish. In the last case, non-symmetric points are created and destroy…
We study bifurcation behavior in periodic perturbations of two-dimensional symmetric systems exhibiting codimension-two bifurcations with a double eigenvalue when the frequencies of the perturbation terms are small. We transform the periodically perturbed system to a simpler one which is a periodic perturbation of the normal form for codimension-two bifurcations with a double zero eigenvalue and symmetry, and apply the subharmonic and homoclinic Melnikov methods to analyze bifurcations occurring in the system. In particular, we show that there exist transverse homoclinic or heteroclinic orbits…
A discrete set in the $p$-dimensional Euclidian space is {\it almost periodic}, if the measure with the unite masses at points of the set is almost periodic in the weak sense. We propose to construct positive almost periodic discrete sets as an almost periodic perturbation of a full rank discrete lattice. Also we prove that each almost periodic discrete set on the real axes is an almost periodic perturbation of some arithmetic progression. Next, we consider signed almost periodic discrete sets, i.e., when the signed measure with masses $\pm1$ at points of a discrete set is almost periodic. We …
A well-known lemma by John Franks asserts that one obtains any perturbation of the derivative of a diffeomorphism along a periodic orbit by a $C^1$-perturbation of the whole diffeomorphism on a small neighbourhood of the orbit. However, one does not control where the invariant manifolds of the orbit are, after perturbation. We show that if the perturbated derivative is obtained by an isotopy along which some strong stable/unstable manifolds of some dimensions exist, then the Franks perturbation can be done preserving the corresponding stable/unstable semi-local manifolds. This is a general per…
We revisit non-autonomous systems depending quasi-periodically in time within the reversible context 2 of KAM theory and obtain Whitney smooth families of invariant tori in such systems via Herman's method. The reversible KAM context 2 refers to the situation where the dimension of the fixed point manifold of the reversing involution is less than half the codimension of the invariant torus in question.
We show stable ergodicity of a class of conservative diffeomorphisms which do not have any hyperbolic invariant subbundle. Moreover the uniqueness of SRB measures for non-conservative $C^1$ perturbations of such diffeomorphisms. This class contains strictly non-partially hyperbolic robustly transitive diffeomorphisms by Bonatti-Viana and so we answer their question about the stable ergodicity of such systems.
We prove a perturbation (pasting) lemma for conservative (and symplectic) systems. This allows us to prove that $C^{\infty}$ volume preserving vector fields are $C^1$-dense in $C^{1}$ volume preserving vector fields (After the conclusion of this work, Ali Tahzibi pointed out to us that this result was proved in 1979 by Carlos Zuppa, although his proof is different from ours.). Moreover, we obtain that $C^1$ robustly transitive conservative flows in three-dimensional manifolds are Anosov and we conclude that there are no geometrical Lorenz-like sets for conservative flows. Also, by-product of t…
We consider a linear differential system of Mathieu equations with periodic coefficients over periodic closed orbits and we prove that, arbitrarily close to this system, there is a linear differential system of Hamiltonian damped Mathieu equations with periodic coefficients over periodic closed orbits such that, all but a finite number of closed periodic coefficients, have unstable solutions. The perturbations will be peformed in the periodic coefficients.
Peaked periodic waves in the Camassa-Holm equation are revisited. Linearized evolution equations are derived for perturbations to the peaked periodic waves and linearized instability is proven both in $H^1$ and $W^{1,\infty}$ norms. Dynamics of perturbations in $H^1$ is related to the existence of two conserved quantities and is bounded in the full nonlinear system due to these conserved quantities. On the other hand, perturbations to the peaked periodic wave grow in $W^{1,\infty}$ norm and may blow up in a finite time in the nonlinear evolution of the Camassa-Holm equation.
A computer-assisted argument is given, which provides existence proofs for periodic orbits in state-dependent delayed perturbations of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Assuming that the unperturbed ODE has an isolated periodic orbit, we introduce a set of polynomial inequalities whose successful verification leads to the existence of periodic orbits in the perturbed delay equation. We present a general algorithm, which describes a way of computing the coefficients of the polynomials and optimizing their variables so that the polynomial inequalities are satisfied. The algorithm uses the …
We consider the one-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator perturbed by a linear operator which is a polynomial of degree $2$ in $(x,-{\rm i}\partial_x)$, with coefficients quasi-periodically depending on time. By establishing the reducibility results, we describe the growth of Sobolev norms. In particular, the $t^{2s}-$polynomial growth of ${\mathcal H}^s-$norm is observed in this model if the original time quasi-periodic equation is reduced to a constant Stark Hamiltonian.
We consider perturbations of quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators on the integer lattice with analytic sampling functions by decaying potentials and seek decay conditions under which various spectral properties are preserved. In the (almost) reducibility regime we prove that for perturbations with finite first moment, the essential spectrum remains purely absolutely continuous and the newly created discrete spectrum must be finite in each gap of the unperturbed spectrum. We also prove that for fixed phase, Anderson localization occurring for almost all frequencies in the regime of positive Lya…
We study random perturbations of quasi-periodic uniformly discrete sets in the $d$-dimensional euclidean space. By means of Diffraction Theory, we find conditions under which a quasi-periodic set $X$ can be almost surely recovered from its random perturbations. This extends the recent periodic case result of Yakir from "Recovery the lattice from its random perturbations" IMRN 2020 (arXiv:200201508).
