Weakly damped mechanical systems under small periodic forcing tend to exhibit periodic response in a close vicinity of certain periodic orbits of their conservative limit. Specifically, amplitude frequency plots for the conservative limit have often been noted, both numerically and experimentally, to serve as backbone curves for the near resonance peaks of the forced response. In other cases, such a relationship between the unforced and forced response was not observed. Here we provide a systematic mathematical analysis that predicts which members of conservative periodic orbit families will serve as backbone curves for the forced-damped response. We also obtain mathematical conditions under which approximate numerical and experimental approaches, such as energy balance and force appropriation, are justifiable. Finally, we derive analytic criteria for the birth of isolated response branches (isolas) whose identification is otherwise challenging from numerical continuation.
Frequency responses of multi-degree-of-freedom mechanical systems with weak forcing and damping can be studied as perturbations from their conservative limit. Specifically, recent results show how bifurcations near resonances can be predicted analytically from conservative families of periodic orbits (nonlinear normal modes). However, the stability of forced-damped motions is generally determined a posteriori via numerical simulations. In this paper, we present analytic results on the stability of periodic orbits that perturb from conservative nonlinear normal modes. In contrast with prior app…
We study persistence of periodic and homoclinic orbits, first integrals and commutative vector fields in dynamical systems depending on a small parameter $\varepsilon>0$ and give several necessary conditions for their persistence. Here we treat homoclinic orbits not only to equilibria but also to periodic orbits. We also discuss some relationships of these results with the standard subharmonic and homoclinic Melnikov methods for time-periodic perturbations of single-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian systems, and with another version of the homoclinic Melnikov method for autonomous perturbations of…
These notes were written during the 9th and 10th sessions of the subject Dynamical Systems II coursed at DTU (Denmark) during the Winter Semester 2015-2016, and later extended in February 2017. They aim to provide students with a theoretical and numerical background for the computation of periodic orbits using Newton's method. We focus on periodically perturbed quasi-integrable systems (using the forced pendulum as an example) and hence we take advantage of the Melnikov method to get first guesses. However, these well known techniques are general enough to be applied in other type of systems. …
We consider the planar circular restricted three-body problem (PCRTBP), as a model for the motion of a spacecraft relative to the Earth-Moon system. We focus on the Lagrange equilibrium points $L_1$ and $L_2$. There are families of Lyapunov periodic orbits around either $L_1$ or $L_2$, forming Lyapunov manifolds. There also exist homoclinic orbits to the Lyapunov manifolds around either $L_1$ or $L_2$, as well as heteroclinic orbits between the Lyapunov manifold around $L_1$ and the one around $L_2$. The motion along the homoclinic/heteroclinic orbits can be described via the scattering map, w…
Rigorous Melnikov analysis is accomplished for Davey-Stewartson II equation under singular perturbation. Unstable fiber theorem and center-stable manifold theorem are established. The fact that the unperturbed homoclinic orbit, obtained via a Darboux transformation, is a classical solution, leads to the conclusion that only local well-posedness is necessary for a Melnikov measurement.
We provide an effective uniform upper bond for the number of zeros of the first non-vanishing Melnikov function of a polynomial perturbations of a planar polynomial Hamiltonian vector field. The bound depends on degrees of the field and of the perturbation, and on the order $k$ of the Melnikov function. The generic case $k=1$ was considered by Binyamini, Novikov and Yakovenko (\cite{BNY-Inf16}). The bound follows from an effective construction of the Gauss-Manin connection for iterated integrals.
In this paper we study polynomial Hamiltonian systems $dF=0$ in the plane and their small perturbations: $dF+εω=0$. The first nonzero Melnikov function $M_μ=M_μ(F,γ,ω)$ of the Poincaré map along a loop $γ$ of $dF=0$ is given by an iterated integral. In a previous work (see arXiv 1703.03837), we bounded the length of the iterated integral $M_μ$ by a geometric number $k=k(F,γ)$ which we call orbit depth. We conjectured that the bound is optimal. Here, we give a simple example of a Hamiltonian system $F$ and its orbit $γ$ having infinite orbit depth. If our conjecture is true, for this example th…
In this paper, the general perturbation problem of piecewise smooth integrable differential systems with two switching planes is considered. Firstly, when the unperturbed system has a family of periodic orbits, the first order Melnikov vector function is derived which can be used to study the number of periodic orbits bifurcated from the period annuli. Then, by using the obtained Melnikov vector function, we get an upper bound of the number of periodic orbits of a concrete $n$-dimensional piecewise smooth differential system.
In this paper, we are interested in providing lower estimations for the maximum number of limit cycles $H(n)$ that planar piecewise linear differential systems with two zones separated by the curve $y=x^n$ can have, where $n$ is a positive integer. For this, we perform a higher order Melnikov analysis for piecewise linear perturbations of the linear center. In particular, we obtain that $H(2)\geq 4,$ $H(3)\geq 8,$ $H(n)\geq7,$ for $n\geq 4$ even, and $H(n)\geq 9,$ for $n\geq 5$ odd. This improves all the previous results for $n\geq2.$ Our analysis is mainly based on some recent results about C…
We consider a mechanical system consisting of $n$ penduli and a $d$-dimensional generalized rotator subject to a time-dependent perturbation. The perturbation is not assumed to be either Hamiltonian, or periodic or quasi-periodic. The strength of the perturbation is given by a parameter $ε\in\mathbb{R}$. For all $|ε|$ sufficiently small, the augmented flow has a $(2d + 1)$-dimensional normally hyperbolic locally invariant manifold $\tildeΛ_ε$. We define a Melnikov vector, which gives the first order expansion of the displacement of the stable and unstable manifolds of $\tildeΛ_0$ under the per…
Using stationary phase methods, we provide an explicit formula for the Melnikov function of the one and a half degrees of freedom system given by a Hamiltonian system subject to a rapidly oscillating perturbation. Remarkably, the Melnikov function turns out to be computable without an explicit knowledge of the separatrix and in the case of non-analytic systems. This is related to a priori stable systems coupled with low regularity perturbations. It also applies to perturbations controlled by wave-type equations, so in particular we also illustrate this result with the motion of charged particl…
We study perturbations of diffeomorphisms that have a saddle connection between a pair of normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds. We develop a first-order deformation calculus for invariant manifolds and show that a generalized Melnikov function or Melnikov displacement can be written in a canonical way. This function is defined to be a section of the normal bundle of the saddle connection. We show how our definition reproduces the classical methods of Poincaré and Melnikov and specializes to methods previously used for exact symplectic and volume-preserving maps. We use the method to detect …
In the research literature, one can find distinct notions for higher order averaged functions of regularly perturbed non-autonomous $T$- periodic differential equations of the kind $x'=\varepsilon F(t,x,\varepsilon)$. By one hand, the classical (stroboscopic) averaging method provides asymptotic estimates for its solutions in terms of some uniquely defined functions $\mathbf{g}_i$'s, called averaged functions, which are obtained through near-identity stroboscopic transformations and by solving homological equations. On the other hand, a Melnikov procedure is employed to obtain bifurcation func…
This paper is devoted to the study of the maximum number of limit cycles, $H(m,n)$, of a planar piecewise linear differential system with two zones separated by the curve $y^n-x^m=0$, with $n,m$ being positive integers. More precisely, we provide a lower estimate of $ H(m,n)$. for all $m,n\in \mathbb{N}$, for piecewise linear perturbations of the linear center using some recent results about Chebyshev systems with positive accuracy and Melnikov Theory
In this work we consider a two-dimensional piecewise smooth system, defined in two domains separated by the switching manifold $x=0$. We assume that there exists a piecewise-defined continuous Hamiltonian that is a first integral of the system. We also suppose that the system possesses an invisible fold-fold at the origin and two heteroclinic orbits connecting two hyperbolic critical points on either side of $x=0$. Finally, we assume that the region closed by these heteroclinic connections is fully covered by periodic orbits surrounding the origin, whose periods monotonically increase as they …
This paper deals with the problem of limit cycle bifurcations for piecewise smooth integrable differential systems with four zones. When the unperturbed system has a family of periodic orbits, the first order Melnikov function is derived which can be used to study the number of limit cycles bifurcated from the periodic orbits. As an application, using the first order Melnikov function and Picard-Fuchs equation, we obtain an upper bound of the number of bifurcated limit cycles of a concrete piecewise smooth differential system.
We consider one-dimensional systems in the presence of a quasi-periodic perturbation, in the analytical setting, and study the problem of existence of quasi-periodic solutions which are resonant with the frequency vector of the perturbation. We assume that the unperturbed system is locally integrable and anisochronous, and that the frequency vector of the perturbation satisfies the Bryuno condition. Existence of resonant solutions is related to the zeroes of a suitable function, called the Melnikov function - by analogy with the periodic case. We show that, if the Melnikov function has a zero …
We give a surface for which the Ricci Flow applied to the metric will increase the topological entropy of the geodesic flow. Specifically, we first adapt the Melnikov method to apply to a Ricci Flow perturbation and then we construct a surface which is closely related to a surface of revolution, but does not quite have rotational symmetry. This is done by adapting the Liouville metric representation of a surface of revolution. The final steps of the Melnikov method require numerical integration.
We study the existence of periodic solutions in a class of planar Filippov systems obtained from non-autonomous periodic perturbations of reversible piecewise smooth differential systems. It is assumed that the unperturbed system presents a simple two-fold cycle, which is characterized by a closed trajectory connecting a visible two-fold singularity to itself. It is shown that under certain generic conditions the perturbed system has sliding and crossing periodic solutions. In order to get our results, Melnikov's ideas were applied together with tools from the geometric singular perturbation t…
This paper deals with the problem of limit cycle bifurcations for a piecewise near-Hamilton system with four regions separated by algebraic curves $y=\pm x^2$. By analyzing the obtained first order Melnikov function, we give an upper bound of the number of limit cycles which bifurcate from the period annulus around the origin under $n$-th degree polynomial perturbations. In the case $n=1$, we obtain that at least 4 (resp. 3) limit cycles can bifurcate from the period annulus if the switching curves are $y=\pm x^2$ (resp. $y=x^2$ or $y=-x^2$). The results also show that the number of switching …
In this paper, we study the discrete cubic nonlinear Schroedinger lattice under Hamiltonian perturbations. First we develop a complete isospectral theory relevant to the hyperbolic structures of the lattice without perturbations. In particular, Backlund-Darboux transformations are utilized to generate heteroclinic orbits and Melnikov vectors. Then we give coordinate-expressions for persistent invariant manifolds and Fenichel fibers for the perturbed lattice. Finally based upon the above machinery, existence of codimension 2 transversal homoclinic tubes is established through a Melnikov type ca…
We compute the cyclicity of open period annuli of the following generalized Rayleigh-Liénard equation $$\ddot{x}+ax+bx^3-(λ_1+λ_2 x^2+λ_3\dot{x}^2+λ_4 x^4+λ_5\dot{x}^4+λ_6 x^6)\dot{x}=0$$ and the equivalent planar system $X_λ$, where the coefficients of the perturbation $λ_j$ are independent small parameters and $a, b$ are fixed nonzero constants. Our main tool is the machinery of the so called higher-order Poincaré-Pontryagin-Melnikov functions (Melnikov functions $M_n$ for short), combined with the explicit computation of center conditions and the corresponding Bautin ideal. We consider firs…
In this paper, we study the bifurcate of limit cycles for Bogdanov-Takens system($\dot{x}=y$, $\dot{y}=-x+x^{2}$) under perturbations of piecewise smooth polynomials of degree $2$ and $n$ respectively. We bound the number of zeros of first order Melnikov function which controls the number of limit cycles bifurcating from the center. It is proved that the upper bounds of the number of limit cycles with switching curve $x=y^{2m}$($m$ is a positive integral) are $(39m+36)n+77m+21(m\geq 2)$ and $50n+52(m=1)$ (taking into account the multiplicity). The upper bounds number of limit cycles with switc…
In this paper, we consider the bifurcation of limit cycles for generic L-V system ($\dot{x}=y+x^2-y^2\pm\frac{4}{\sqrt{3}}xy,~\dot{y}=-x+2xy$) and B-T system ($\dot{x}=y,~\dot{y}=-x+x^2$) under perturbations of piecewise smooth polynomials with degree $n$. Here the switching line is $y=0$. By using Picard-Fuchs equations, we bound the number of zeros of first order Melnikov function which controls the number of limit cycles bifurcating from the center. It is proved that the upper bounds of the number of limit cycles for generic L-V system and B-T system are respectively $36n-65~(n\geq4),~37,57…
In this paper, by using Picard-Fuchs equations and Chebyshev criterion, we study the bifurcate of limit cycles for quadratic Hamilton system $S^{(2)}$ and $S^{(3)}$: $\dot{x}= y+2axy+by^2$, $\dot{y}=-x+x^2-ay^2$ with $a\in(-\frac{1}{2},1)$, $b=(1-a)(1+2a)^{1/2}$ and $a=1$, $b=0$ respectively, under perturbations of piecewise smooth polynomials with degree $n$. The discontinuity is the line $y=0$. We bound the number of zeros of first order Melnikov function which controls the number of limit cycles bifurcating from the center. It is proved that the upper bounds of the number of limit cycles fo…
Given a smooth function $U(t,x)$, $T$-periodic in the first variable and satisfying $U(t,x) = \mathcal{O}(\vert x \vert^α)$ for some $α\in (0,2)$ as $\vert x \vert \to \infty$, we prove that the forced Kepler problem $$ \ddot x = - \dfrac{x}{|x|^3} + \nabla_x U(t,x),\qquad x\in {\mathbb{R}}^2, $$ has a generalized $T$-periodic solution, according to the definition given in the paper [Boscaggin, Ortega, Zhao, \emph{Periodic solutions and regularization of a Kepler problem with time-dependent perturbation}, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc, 2018]. The proof relies on variational arguments.
This paper studies the family of piecewise linear differential systems in the plane with two pieces separated by a switching curve $y=x^{m}$, where $m>1$ is an arbitrary positive. By analysing the first order Melnikov function, we give an upper bound and an lower bound of the maximum number of limit cycles which bifurcate from the period annulus around the origin under polynomial perturbations of degree $n$. The results shows that the degree of switching curves affect the number of limit cycles.
We discuss the appearance of chaos in time-periodic perturbations of reversible vector fields in the plane. We use the normal forms of codimension~$1$ reversible vector fields and discuss the ways a time-dependent periodic forcing term of pulse form may be added to them to yield topological chaotic behaviour. Chaos here means that the resulting dynamics is semi-conjugate to a shift in a finite alphabet. The results rely on the classification of reversible vector fields and on the theory of topological horseshoes. This work is part of a project of studying periodic forcing of symmetric vector f…
We propose an extension of the one dimensional (doubling) renormalization operator to the case of maps on the cylinder. The kind of maps considered are commonly referred as quasi-periodic forced one dimensional maps. We prove that the fixed point of the one dimensional renormalization operator extends to a fixed point of the quasi-periodic forced renormalization operator. We also prove that the operator is differentiable around the fixed point and we study its derivative. Then we consider a two parametric family of quasi-periodically forced maps which is a unimodal one dimensional map with a f…
This paper studies the family of piecewise linear differential systems in the plane with two pieces separated by a cubic curve. By analyzing the obtained first order Melnikov function, we give an upper bound of the number of limit cycles which bifurcate from the period annulus around the origin under $n$ degree polynomial perturbations. In the case $n=1$ and 2, we obtain that there have exactly 3 and 6 limit cycles bifurcating from the period annulus respectively. The result shows that the switching curves affect the number of the appearing of limit cycles.
In this paper, we study the number of limit cycles that can bifurcating from a periodic annulus in discontinuous planar piecewise linear Hamiltonian differential system with three zones separated by two parallel straight lines. We prove that if the central subsystem, i.e. the system defined between the two parallel lines, has a real center and the others subsystems have centers or saddles, then we have at least three limit cycles that appear after perturbations of periodic annulus. For this, we study the number of zeros of a Melnikov function for piecewise Hamiltonian system and present a norm…
In a recent paper by the author (K. Yagasaki, Nonintegrability of the restricted three-body problem, submitted for publication), a technique was developed for determining whether nearly integrable systems are not meromorphically Bogoyavlenskij-integrable such that the first integrals and commutative vector fields also depend meromorphically on the small parameter. Here we continue to demonstrate the technique for some classes of dynamical systems. In particular, we consider time-periodic perturbations of single-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian systems and discuss a relationship of the technique w…
We consider a small SO(2)-equivariant perturbation of a reaction-diffusion system on the sphere, which is equivariant with respect to the group SO(3) of all rigid rotations. We consider a normally hyperbolic SO(3)-group orbit of a rotating wave on the sphere that persists to a normally hyperbolic SO(2)-invariant manifold $M(ε)$. We investigate the effects of this forced symmetry breaking by studying the perturbed dynamics induced on $M(ε)$ by the above reaction-diffusion system. We prove that depending on the frequency vectors of the rotating waves that form the relative equilibrium SO(3)u_{0}…
We prove the existence of almost-periodic solutions for quasi-linear perturbations of the Airy equation. This is the first result about the existence of this type of solutions for a quasi-linear PDE. The solutions turn out to be analytic in time and space. To prove our result we use a Craig-Wayne approach combined with a KAM reducibility scheme and pseudo-differential calculus on ${\mathbb T}^\infty$.
Escape from a potential well is an extreme example of transient behavior. We consider the escape of the harmonically forced particle under viscous damping from the benchmark truncated weakly nonlinear potential well. Main attention is paid to most interesting case of primary 1:1 resonance. The treatment is based on multiple-scales analysis and exploration of the slow-flow dynamics. Contrary to Hamiltonian case described in earlier works, in the case with damping the slow-flow equations are not integrable. However, if the damping is small enough, it is possible to analyze the perturbed slow-flo…
