We apply topological methods to the study of the set of harmonic solutions of periodically perturbed autonomous ordinary differential equations on differentiable manifolds, allowing the perturbing term to contain a fixed delay.
In the crucial step, in order to cope with the delay, we define a suitable (infinite dimensional) notion of Poincaré $T$-translation operator and prove a formula that, in the unperturbed case, allows the computation of its fixed point index.
Existence and spatio-temporal patterns of periodic solutions to second order reversible equivariant autonomous systems with commensurate delays are studied using the Brouwer $O(2) \times Γ\times \mathbb Z_2$-equivariant degree theory, where $O(2)$ is related to the reversing symmetry, $Γ$ reflects the symmetric character of the coupling in the corresponding network and $\mathbb Z_2$ is related to the oddness of the right-hand-side. Abstract results are supported by a concrete example with $Γ= D_6$ -- the dihedral group of order 12.
We study the structure of the set of harmonic solutions to perturbed nonautonomous, T-periodic, separated variables ODEs on manifolds. The perturbing term is allowed to contain a finite delay and to be T-periodic in time.
We study semi-dynamical systems associated to delay differential equations. We give a simple criteria to obtain weak and strong persistence and provide sufficient conditions to guarantee uniform persistence. Moreover, we show the existence of non-trivial $T$-periodic solutions via topological degree techniques. Finally, we prove that, in some sense, the conditions are also necessary.
A class of periodic differential $n$-dimensional systems with patch structure with (possibly infinite) delay and nonlinear impulses is considered. These systems incorporate very general nonlinearities and impulses whose signs may vary. Criteria for the existence of at least one positive periodic solution are presented, extending and improving previous ones established for the scalar case. Applications to systems inspired in mathematical biology models, such as impulsive hematopoiesis and Nicholson-type systems, are also included.
In this paper, we consider the almost periodic dynamics of a multispecies Lotka-Volterra mutualism system with time varying delays on time scales. By establishing some dynamic inequalities on time scales, a permanence result for the model is obtained. Furthermore, by means of the almost periodic functional hull theory on time scales and Lyapunov functional, some criteria are obtained for the existence, uniqueness and global attractivity of almost periodic solutions of the model. Our results complement and extend some scientific work in recent years. Finally, an example is given to illustrate t…
We consider a system of several nonlinear equations with a distributed delay and obtain absolute asymptotic stability conditions, independent of the delay. The ideas of the proofs are based on the notion of a strong attractor. The results are applied to Hopfield neural networks, Nicholson's blowflies type system, and compartment models of population dynamics.
The time-periodic scalar delay differential equation $\dot x(t)=γf(t,x(t-1))$ is considered, which leads to a resonant bifurcation of the equilibrium at critical values of the parameter. Using Floquet theory, spectral projection and center manifold reduction, we give conditions for the stability properties of the bifurcating invariant curves and four-periodic orbits. The coefficients of the third order normal form are derived explicitly. We show that the 1:4 resonance has no effect on equations of the form $\dot z(t)=-γr(t)g(x(t-1))$.
A wide class of non-autonomous nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations with delay is studied. We allow in our investigations different types of delays such as constant, time-dependent, state-dependent (both discrete and distributed) to be presented simultaneously. The main difficulties arise due to the presence of discrete state-dependent delays since the nonlinear delay term is not Lipschitz on the space of continuous functions. We find conditions for the local existence, uniqueness and study the invariance principle.
By means of a linear scaling of the variables we convert a singular bifurcation equation in $\R^n$ into an equivalent equation to which the classical implicit function theorem can be directly applied. This allows to deduce the existence of a unique branch of solutions as well as a relevant property of the spectrum of the derivative of the singular bifurcation equation along the branch. We use these results to show the existence, uniqueness and the asymptotic stability of periodic solutions of a $T$-periodically perturbed autonomous system bifurcating from a $T$-periodic limit cycle of the auto…
We prove a necessary and sufficient criterion for the exponential stability of periodic solutions of delay differential equations with large delay. We show that for sufficiently large delay the Floquet spectrum near criticality is characterized by a set of curves, which we call asymptotic continuous spectrum, that is independent on the delay.
We study some already introduced and some new strong and weak topologies of integral type to provide continuous dependence on continuous initial data for the solutions of non-autonomous Carathéodory delay differential equations. As a consequence, we obtain new families of continuous skew-product semiflows generated by delay differential equations whose vector fields belong to such metric topological vector spaces of Lipschitz Carathéodory functions. Sufficient conditions for the equivalence of all or some of the considered strong or weak topologies are also given. Finally, we also provide resu…
Existence and spatio-temporal symmetric patterns of periodic solutions to second order reversible equivariant non-autonomous periodic systems with multiple delays are studied under the Hartman-Nagumo growth conditions. The method is based on using the Brouwer $D_1 \times \mathbb Z_2\times Γ$-equivariant degree theory, where $D_1$ is related to the reversing symmetry, $\mathbb Z_2$ is related to the oddness of the right-hand-side and $Γ$ reflects the symmetric character of the coupling in the corresponding network. Abstract results are supported by a concrete example with $Γ= D_n$ -- the dihedr…
The aim of this paper is to study the dynamical behavior of non-autonomous stochastic hybrid systems with delays. By general Krylov-Bogolyubov's method, we first obtain the sufficient conditions for the existence of an evolution system of measures of the non-autonomous stochastic system and also give some easily verifiable conditions. We then prove a sufficient condition for convergence of evolution systems of measures as the delay approaches zero. As an application of the abstract theory, we first prove the existence of evolution systems of measures for stochastic system with time-vary delays…
A non-autonomous evolution semi-linear differential system under non-instantaneous impulses, delays, and perturbed by non-local conditions is studied. Its piece-wise continuous solutions belong to a finite-dimensional Banach space. The existence and uniqueness of solutions on the interval $[-r,τ]$ are obtained by applying Karakostas fixed-point theorem. Further results concerning solution prolongation are developed. An example is presented, and several remarks on the infinite-dimensional case are included.
We employ the Craig-Wayne-Bourgain method to construct quasi-periodic solutions for delayed perturbation differential equations. Our results not only implement the existing literatures on constructing quasi-periodic solutions for DDE by the KAM method and space splitting technique, but also provide an example of application of multi-scale analysis method to non-selfadjoint problem.
We present a toolbox for the continuation of two-dimensional tori in autonomous dynamical systems and non-autonomous systems with periodic forcing. A torus is solved as the solution to a boundary-value problem. Truncated Fourier series and collocation methods are used to discretize the boundary-value problem. This toolbox is based on the continuation package COCO (https://sourceforge.net/projects/cocotools/). A few examples are included to demonstrate the functionality of this toolbox.
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of solution to a non-autonomous diffusion equations with delay containing some hereditary characteristics and nonlocal diffusion in time-dependent space $C_{\mathcal{H}_{t}(Ω)}$. When the nonlinear function $f$ satisfies the polynomial growth of arbitrary order $p-1$ $(p \ge 2)$ and the external force $h \in L_{l o c}^{2}\left(\mathbb{R} ; H^{-1}(Ω)\right)$, we establish the existence and regularity of the time-dependent pullback attractors.
We study the existence and multiplicity of periodic solutions for singular $φ$-laplacian equations with delay on time scales. We prove the existence of multiple solutions using topological methods based on the Leray-Schauder degree. A special case is the $T$-periodic problem for the forced pendulum equation with relativistic effects.
The exponential ordering is exploited in the context of non-auto\-no\-mous delay systems, inducing monotone skew-product semiflows under less restrictive conditions than usual. Some dynamical concepts linked to the order, such as semiequilibria, are considered for the exponential ordering, with implications for the determination of the presence of uniform persistence or the existence of global attractors. Also, some important conclusions on the long-term dynamics and attraction are obtained for monotone and sublinear delay systems for this ordering. The results are then applied to almost perio…
In this paper, we investigate a class of nonlinear impulsive stochastic differential evolution equations with infinite delay in Banach space. Based on the Krasnoselskii's fixed point theorem, sufficient conditions of the existence of the square mean piecewise almost periodic solutions to this type of equations are derived. Moreover, the exponential stability of the square mean piecewise almost periodic solution is investigated.
For some one-dimensional discrete-time autonomous population models, local stability implies global stability of the positive equilibrismo point. One of the known techniques is the enveloping method. In this paper we extend the enveloping method to one single periodic population models. We show that, under certain conditions, "individual enveloping" implies "periodic enveloping" in one-dimensional periodic population models.
In this paper we prove that the following delay differential equation \[ \frac{d}{dt}x(t)=rx(t)\left(1-\int_{0}^{1}x(t-s)ds\right), \] has a periodic solution of period two for $r>\frac{π^{2}}{2}$ (when the steady state, $x=1$, is unstable). In order to find the periodic solution, we study an integrable system of ordinary differential equations, following the idea by Kaplan and Yorke \cite{Kaplan=000026Yorke:1974}. The periodic solution is expressed in terms of the Jacobi elliptic functions.
By the Lyapunov-Perron method,we prove the existence of random inertial manifolds for a class of equations driven simultaneously by non-autonomous deterministic and stochastic forcing. These invariant manifolds contain tempered pullback random attractors if such attractors exist. We also prove pathwise periodicity and almost periodicity of inertial manifolds when non-autonomous deterministic forcing is periodic and almost periodic in time, respectively.

We consider two types of non-autonomous 2-periodic Gumovski-Mira difference equations. We show that while the corresponding autonomous recurrences are conjugated, the behavior of the sequences generated by the 2-periodic ones differ dramatically: in one case the behavior of the sequences is simple (integrable) and in the other case it is much more complicated (chaotic). We also present a global study of the integrable case that includes which periods appear for the recurrence.
We study an interplay between delay and discontinuous hysteresis in dynamical systems. After having established existence and uniqueness of solutions, we focus on the analysis of stability of periodic solutions. The main object we study is a Poincaré map that is infinite-dimensional due to delay and non-differentiable due to hysteresis. We propose a general functional framework based on the fractional order Sobolev--Slobodeckij spaces and explicitly obtain a formal linearization of the Poincaré map in these spaces. Furthermore, we prove that the spectrum of this formal linearization determines…
We describe a variational approach to a notion of Hamiltonian delay equations. Our delay Hamiltonians are of product form. We consider several examples. For closed symplectically aspherical symplectic manifolds $(M,ω)$ we prove that for generic delay Hamiltonians the number of 1-periodic solutions of the Hamiltonian delay equation is at least the sum of the Betti numbers of $M$, extending the proof of the Arnold conjecture to the case with delay.
This paper is an extension of an earlier paper that dealt with global dynamics in autonomous triangular maps. In the current paper, we extend the results on global dynamics of autonomous triangular maps to periodic non-autonomous triangular maps. We show that, under certain conditions, the orbit of every point in a periodic non-autonomous triangular map converges to a fixed point (respectively, periodic orbit of period $p$) if and only if there is no periodic orbit of prime period two (respectively, periodic orbits of prime period greater than $p$).
We consider the scalar delay differential equation $$ \dot{x}(t)=-x(t)+f_{K}(x(t-1)) $$ with a nondecreasing feedback function $f_{K}$ depending on a parameter $K$, and we verify that a saddle-node bifurcation of periodic orbits takes place as $K$ varies. The nonlinearity $f_{K}$ is chosen so that it has two unstable fixed points (hence the dynamical system has two unstable equilibria), and these fixed points remain bounded away from each other as $K$ changes. The generated periodic orbits are of large amplitude in the sense that they oscillate about both unstable fixed points of $f_{K}$.
The article is devoted to the study of non-autonomous Navier-Stokes equations. First, the authors have proved that such systems admit compact global attractors. This problem is formulated and solved in the terms of general non-autonomous dynamical systems. Second, they have obtained conditions of convergence of non-autonomous Navier-Stokes equations. Third, a criterion for the existence of almost periodic (quasi periodic, almost automorphic, recurrent, pseudo recurrent) solutions of non-autonomous Navier-Stokes equations is given. Finally, the authors have derived a global averaging principle f…
Our aim in this paper is to deal with the dynamics of following higher order difference equation x_{n+1}=A+B((x_{n-m})/(x_{n}^2)) where A,B>0, and initial values are positive, and m={1,2,...}. Furthermore, we discuss the periodicity, boundedness, semi-cycles, global asymptotic stability of solutions of these equations. We also handle the rate of convergence of solutions of these difference equations.
Szalai et al. (SIAM J. on Sci. Comp. 28(4), 2006) gave a general construction for characteristic matrices for systems of linear delay-differential equations with periodic coefficients. First, we show that matrices constructed in this way can have a discrete set of poles in the complex plane, which may possibly obstruct their use when determining the stability of the linear system. Then we modify and generalize the original construction such that the poles get pushed into a small neighborhood of the origin of the complex plane.
This paper shows that (1) there exists a topologically transitive NADS having two disjoint invariant periodic orbits with dense periodic points, which is finitely generated but not periodic; (2) there exists a topologically transitive non-finitely generated NADS having two disjoint invariant periodic orbits with dense periodic point, which is not sensitive. This answers positively the Open Problems 4.1 and 4.2 posed in [8].
Periodic orbits and associated bifurcations of singularly perturbed state-dependent delay differential equations (DDEs) are studied when the profiles of the periodic orbits contain jump discontinuities in the singular limit. A definition of singular solution is introduced which is based on a continuous parametrisation of the possibly discontinuous limiting solution. This reduces the construction of the limiting profiles to an algebraic problem. A model two state-dependent delay differential equation is studied in detail and periodic singular solutions are constructed with one and two local max…
In this paper, a class of Kolmogorov systems with delays are studied. Sufficient conditions are provided for a system to have a compact uniform attractor. Then Jansen's result (J. Math. Biol. Vol. 25 (1987) 411-422) for autonomous replicator and Lotka-Volterra systems has been extended to delayed nonautonomous Kolmogorov systems with periodic or autonomous Lotka-Volterra subsystems. Thus, simple algebraic conditions are obtained for partial permanence and permanence. An outstanding feature of all these results is that the conditions are irrelevant of the size and distribution of the delays.
According to the Arnold conjectures and Floer's proofs, there are non-trivial lower bounds for the number of periodic solutions of Hamiltonian differential equations on a closed symplectic manifold whose symplectic form vanishes on spheres. We use an iterated graph construction and Lagrangian Floer homology to show that these lower bounds also hold for certain Hamiltonian delay equations.
We consider the model of interaction between the immune system and tumor cells including a memory function that reflect the influence of the past states, to simulate the time needed by the latter to develop a chemical and cell mediated response to the presence of the tumor. The memory function is called delay kernel. The results are compared with those from other papers, concluding that the memory function introduces new instabilities in the system leading to an uncontrolable growth of the tumor. If the coefficient of the memory function is used as a bifurcation parameter, it is found that Hop…
A new geometric criterion is derived for the existence of chaos in continuous-time autonomous systems in three-dimensional Euclidean spaces, where a type of Smale horseshoe in a subshift of finite type exists, but the intersection of stable and unstable manifolds of two points on a hyperbolic periodic orbit does not imply the existence of a Smale horseshoe of the same type on cross-sections of these two points. This criterion is based on the existence of a hyperbolic periodic orbit, differing from the classical equilibrium-based Shilnikov criterion and the condition of transversal homoclinic o…
A two-dimensional system of differential equations with delay modelling the glucose-insulin interaction processes in the human body is considered. Sufficient conditions are derived for the unique positive equilibrium in the system to be globally asymptotically stable. They are given in terms of the global attractivity of the fixed point in a limiting interval map. The existence of slowly oscillating periodic solutions is shown in the case when the equilibrium is unstable. The mathematical results are supported by extensive numerical simulations. It is shown that typical behaviour in the system…
We consider differential delay equations of the form $\partial_tx(t) = X_{t}(x(t - τ))$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, where $(X_t)_{t\in S^1}$ is a time-dependent family of smooth vector fields on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $τ$ is a delay parameter. If there is a (suitably non-degenerate) periodic solution $x_0$ of this equation for $τ=0$, that is without delay, there are good reasons to expect existence of a family of periodic solutions for all sufficiently small delays, smoothly parametrized by delay. However, it seems difficult to prove this using the classical implicit function theorem, since the equation ab…
