We study semi-dynamical systems associated to delay differential equations. We give a simple criteria to obtain weak and strong persistence and provide sufficient conditions to guarantee uniform persistence. Moreover, we show the existence of non-trivial $T$-periodic solutions via topological degree techniques. Finally, we prove that, in some sense, the conditions are also necessary.
We study a single-species chemostat model with variable nutrient input and variable dilution rate with delayed (fixed) response in growth. The first goal of this article is to prove that persistence implies uniform persistence. Then we concentrate in the particular case with periodic nutrient input and same periodic dilution with delayed response in growth. We obtain a threshold for either the (uniform) persistence of the model or that the biomass of every solution tends to vanish. Furthermore, we prove that persistence is equivalent to the existence of a unique non-trivial periodic solution. …
The paper deals with a class of cooperative functional differential equations (FDEs) with infinite delay, for which sufficient conditions for persistence and permanence are established. Here, the persistence refers to all solutions with initial conditions that are positive, continuous and bounded. The present method applies to a very broad class of abstract systems of FDEs with infinite delay, both autonomous and non-autonomous, which include many important models used in mathematical biology. Moreover, the hypotheses imposed are in general very easy to check. The results are illustrated with …
An N-dimensional generalization of Nicholson's equation is analyzed. We consider a model including multiple delays, nonlinear coefficients and a nonlinear harvesting term. Inspired by previous results in this subject, we obtain sufficient conditions to guarantee strong and uniform persistence. Furthermore, under extra suitable hypotheses we prove the existence of T-periodic solutions and, reversing the prior conditions in a convenient manner, we show that the zero is a global attractor.
We study the structure of the set of harmonic solutions to perturbed nonautonomous, T-periodic, separated variables ODEs on manifolds. The perturbing term is allowed to contain a finite delay and to be T-periodic in time.
We apply topological methods to the study of the set of harmonic solutions of periodically perturbed autonomous ordinary differential equations on differentiable manifolds, allowing the perturbing term to contain a fixed delay. In the crucial step, in order to cope with the delay, we define a suitable (infinite dimensional) notion of Poincaré $T$-translation operator and prove a formula that, in the unperturbed case, allows the computation of its fixed point index.
A class of periodic differential $n$-dimensional systems with patch structure with (possibly infinite) delay and nonlinear impulses is considered. These systems incorporate very general nonlinearities and impulses whose signs may vary. Criteria for the existence of at least one positive periodic solution are presented, extending and improving previous ones established for the scalar case. Applications to systems inspired in mathematical biology models, such as impulsive hematopoiesis and Nicholson-type systems, are also included.
In this paper, we consider the almost periodic dynamics of a multispecies Lotka-Volterra mutualism system with time varying delays on time scales. By establishing some dynamic inequalities on time scales, a permanence result for the model is obtained. Furthermore, by means of the almost periodic functional hull theory on time scales and Lyapunov functional, some criteria are obtained for the existence, uniqueness and global attractivity of almost periodic solutions of the model. Our results complement and extend some scientific work in recent years. Finally, an example is given to illustrate t…
The time-periodic scalar delay differential equation $\dot x(t)=γf(t,x(t-1))$ is considered, which leads to a resonant bifurcation of the equilibrium at critical values of the parameter. Using Floquet theory, spectral projection and center manifold reduction, we give conditions for the stability properties of the bifurcating invariant curves and four-periodic orbits. The coefficients of the third order normal form are derived explicitly. We show that the 1:4 resonance has no effect on equations of the form $\dot z(t)=-γr(t)g(x(t-1))$.
Existence and spatio-temporal patterns of periodic solutions to second order reversible equivariant autonomous systems with commensurate delays are studied using the Brouwer $O(2) \times Γ\times \mathbb Z_2$-equivariant degree theory, where $O(2)$ is related to the reversing symmetry, $Γ$ reflects the symmetric character of the coupling in the corresponding network and $\mathbb Z_2$ is related to the oddness of the right-hand-side. Abstract results are supported by a concrete example with $Γ= D_6$ -- the dihedral group of order 12.
We study travelling kinks in the spatial discretizations of the nonlinear Klein--Gordon equation, which include the discrete $ϕ^4$ lattice and the discrete sine--Gordon lattice. The differential advance-delay equation for travelling kinks is reduced to the normal form, a scalar fourth-order differential equation, near the quadruple zero eigenvalue. We show numerically non-existence of monotonic kinks (heteroclinic orbits between adjacent equilibrium points) in the fourth-order equation. Making generic assumptions on the reduced fourth-order equation, we prove the persistence of bounded solutio…
In this work we study the existence of periodic and asymptotically periodic solutions of a system of nonlinear Volterra difference equations with infinite delay. By means of fixed point theory, we furnish conditions that guarantee the existence of such periodic solutions.
We investigate the structure of the set of $T$-periodic solutions to periodically perturbed coupled delay differential equations on differentiable manifolds. By using fixed point index and degree-theoretic methods we prove the existence of branches of $T$-periodic solutions to the considered equations. As main application of our methods, we study a generalized version of the sunflower equation.
For a family of $n$-dimensional periodic delay differential equations which encompasses a broad set of models used in structured population dynamics, the existence of a positive periodic solution is obtained under very mild conditions. The proof uses the Schauder fixed point theorem and relies on the permanence of the system. A general criterion for the existence of a positive periodic solution for Nicholson's blowflies periodic systems (with both distributed and discrete time-varying delays) is derived as a simple application of our main result, generalizing the few existing results concernin…
In this paper, a class of neutral type high-order Hopfield neural networks with mixed time-varying delays and leakage delays on time scales is proposed. Based on the exponential dichotomy of linear dynamic equations on time scales, Banach's fixed point theorem and the theory of calculus on time scales, some sufficient conditions are obtained for the existence and global exponential stability of pseudo almost periodic solutions for this class of neural networks. Our results are completely new. Finally, we present an example to illustrate our results are effective. Our example also shows that th…
In this paper, we first propose a concept of weighted pseudo-almost periodic functions on time scales and study some basic properties of weighted pseudo-almost periodic functions on time scales. Then, we establish some results about the existence of weighted pseudo-almost periodic solutions to linear dynamic equations on time scales. Finally, as an application of our results, we study the existence and global exponential stability of weighted pseudo-almost periodic solutions for a class of cellular neural networks with discrete delays on time scales. The results of this paper are completely ne…
In this paper, a generalized model of hematopoiesis with delays and impulses is considered. By employing the contraction mapping principle and a novel type of impulsive delay inequality, we prove the existence of a unique positive almost periodic solution of the model. It is also proved that, under the proposed conditions in this paper, the unique positive almost periodic solution is globally exponentially attractive. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the obtained results.
We consider a class of scalar delay differential equations with impulses and satisfying an Yorke-type condition, for which some criteria for the global stability of the zero solution are established. Here, the usual requirements about the impulses are relaxed. The results can be applied to study the stability of other solutions, such as periodic solutions. As an illustration, a very general periodic Lasota-Wazewska model with impulses and multiple time-dependent delays is addressed, and the global attractivity of its positive periodic solution analysed. Our results are discussed within the con…
In this paper, we consider the almost periodic dynamics of an impulsive multispecies Lotka-Volterra competition system with time delays on time scales. By establishing some comparison theorems of dynamic equations with impulses and delays on time scales, a permanence result for the model is obtained. Furthermore, based on the permanence result, by studying the Lyapunov stability theory of impulsive dynamic equations on time scales, we establish a criterion for the existence and uniformly asymptotic stability of a unique positive almost periodic solution of the system. Finally, we give an examp…
The paper concerns a class of $n$-dimensional non-autonomous delay differential equations obtained by adding a non-monotone delayed perturbation to a linear homogeneous cooperative system of ordinary differential equations. This family covers a wide set of models used in structured population dynamics. By exploiting the stability and the monotone character of the linear ODE, we establish sufficient conditions for both the extinction of all the populations and the permanence of the system. In the case of DDEs with autonomous coefficients (but possible time-varying delays), sharp results are obt…
