We study the dynamics of an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) model, under the Lennard-Jones force with non-linear damping, and harmonic forcing. We establish the bifurcation diagrams for equilibria in a conservative system. Particularly, we present conditions that guarantee the local existence of saddle-node bifurcations. By using the Melnikov method, the region in the space parameters where the persistence of homoclinic orbits is determined in a non-conservative system.
We study main bifurcations of multidimensional diffeomorphisms having a non-transversal homoclinic orbit to a saddle-node fixed point. On a parameter plane we build a bifurcation diagram for single-round periodic orbits lying entirely in a small neighbourhood of the homoclinic orbit. Also a relation of our results to well-known codimension one bifurcations of a saddle fixed point with a quadratic homoclinic tangency and a saddle-node fixed point with a transversal homoclinic orbit is discussed.
It was established in 2006 that bifurcations of three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with a homoclinic tangency to a saddle-focus fixed point with the Jacobian equal to 1 can lead to Lorenz-like strange attractors. In the present paper we prove an analogous result for three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with a homoclinic tangency to a saddle fixed point with the Jacobian equal to 1, provided the quadratic homoclinic tangency under consideration is non-simple.
We show that heterodimensional cycles can be born at the bifurcations of a pair of homoclinic loops to a saddle-focus equilibrium for flows in dimension 4 and higher. In addition to the classical heterodimensional connection between two periodic orbits, we found two new types of heterodimensional connections: one is a heteroclinic between a periodic orbit of index 2 and a homoclinic loop, and the other connects a periodic orbit of index 3 to the saddle-focus equilibrium.
In a smooth dynamical system, a homoclinic connection is a closed orbit returning to a saddle equilibrium. Under perturbation, homoclinics are associated with bifurcations of periodic orbits, and with chaos in higher dimensions. Homoclinic connections in nonsmooth systems are complicated by their interaction with discontinuities in their vector fields. A connection may involve a regular saddle outside a discontinuity set, or a pseudo-saddle on a discontinuity set, with segments of the connection allowed to cross or slide along the discontinuity. Even the simplest case, that of connection to a …
In this paper, we deal with limit cycle bifurcations near a double homoclinic loop with a nilpotent saddle of order 2 by studying expansions of the first order Melnikov functions near the loop and coefficients in these expansions. More precisely, we prove that the perturbed system can have 11, 13, 14 or 16 limit cycles in a neighborhood of the loop under certain conditions. Finally, we give an example to illustrate the effectiveness of our main results.
A saddle to saddle-focus homoclinic transition when the stable leading eigenspace is 3-dimensional (called the 3DL bifurcation) is analyzed. Here a pair of complex eigenvalues and a real eigenvalue exchange their position relative to the imaginary axis, giving rise to a 3-dimensional stable leading eigenspace. This transition is different from the standard Belyakov bifurcation, where a double real eigenvalue splits either into a pair of complex-conjugate eigenvalues or two distinct real eigenvalues. In the wild case, we obtain sets of codimension 1 and 2 bifurcation curves and points that asym…
We study bifurcations of periodic orbits in three parameter general unfoldings of certain types quadratic homoclinic tangencies to saddle fixed points. We apply the rescaling technique to first return (Poincaré) maps and show that the rescaled maps can be brought to a map asymptotically close to the 3D Henon map $\bar x=y,\bar y=z,\bar z = M_1 + M_2 y + B x - z^2$ which, as known, exhibits wild hyperbolic Lorenz-like attractors in some open domains of the parameters. Based on this, we prove the existence of infinite cascades of Lorenz-like attractors.
When a real saddle equilibrium in a three-dimensional vector field undergoes a homoclinic bifurcation, the associated two-dimensional invariant manifold of the equilibrium closes on itself in an orientable or non-orientable way. We are interested in the interaction between global invariant manifolds of saddle equilibria and saddle periodic orbits for a vector field close to a codimension-two homoclinic flip bifurcation, that is, the point of transition between having an orientable or non-orientable two-dimensional surface. Here, we focus on homoclinic flip bifurcations of case $\textbf{B}$, wh…
We consider autonomous Lagrangian systems with two degrees of freedom, having an hyperbolic equilibrium of saddle-saddle type (that is the eingenvalues of the linearized system about the equilibrium are $\pm λ_1, \pm λ_2 $, $λ_1, λ_2 > 0$). We assume that $λ_1 > λ_2$ and that the system possesses two homoclinic orbits. Under a nondegeneracy assumption on the homoclinics and under suitable conditions on the geometric behaviour of these homoclinics near the equilibrium we prove, by variational methods, then they give rise to an infinite family of multibump homoclinic solutions and that the topol…
An analytic reversible Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom is studied in a neighborhood of its symmetric heteroclinic connection made up of a symmetric saddle-center, a symmetric orientable saddle periodic orbit lying in the same level of a Hamiltonian and two non-symmetric heteroclinic orbits permuted by the involution. This is a codimension one structure and therefore it can be met generally in one-parameter families of reversible Hamiltonian systems. There exist two possible types of such connections in dependence on how the involution acts near the equilibrium. We prove a series…
Using the technique of Poincaré return maps, we disclose an intricate order of the subsequent homoclinics near the primary homoclinic bifurcation of the Shilnikov saddle-focus in systems with reflection symmetry. We also reveal the admissible shapes of the corresponding bifurcation curves in a parameter plane of such systems. The scalability ratio of geometry and organization is proven to be universal for such homoclinic bifurcations of higher orders. Two applications with similar dynamics due to the Shilnikov saddle-foci, a smooth adaptation of the Chua circuit and a 3D normal form, are used …
In this article we construct the parameter region where the existence of a homoclinic orbit to a zero equilibrium state of saddle type in the Lorenz-like system will be analytically proved in the case of a nonnegative saddle value. Then, for a qualitative description of the different types of homoclinic bifurcations, a numerical analysis of the detected parameter region is carried out to discover several new interesting bifurcation scenarios.
The set of transverse homoclinic intersections for a saddle-focus equilibrium in the planar equilateral restricted four-body problem admit certain simple homoclinic orbits which form the skeleton of the complete homoclinic intersection -- or homoclinic web. In the present work, the planar restricted four-body problem is viewed as an invariant subsystem of the spatial problem, and the influence of this planar homoclinic skeleton on the spatial dynamics is studied from a numerical point of view. Starting from the vertical Lyapunov families emanating from saddle focus equilibria, we compute the s…
We study generic two- and three-parameter unfoldings of a pair of orbits of quadratic homoclinic tangency in strongly dissipative systems. We prove that the corresponding stability windows for periodic orbits have various universal forms: the so-called "shrimps" (cross-road areas), as well as spring and saddle areas, and (in three-parameter unfoldings) "pregnant shrimps" (specific types of transitions between the shrimps and spring or saddle areas).
We prove the existence of chaotic motions in a planar restricted four body problem, establishing that the system is not integrable. The idea of the proof is to verify the hypotheses of a topological forcing theorem. The forcing theorem applies to two freedom Hamiltonian systems where the stable and unstable manifolds of a saddle-focus equilibrium intersect transversally in the energy level set of the equilibrium. We develop a mathematically rigorous computer assisted argument which verifies the hypotheses of the forcing theorem, and we implement our approach for the restricted four body proble…
In this paper we study flows $φ:M\times\mathbb{R}\longrightarrow M$ having an isolated non-saddle set. We see that the complexity of the region of influence of an isolated non-saddle set $K$ depends on the way in which $K$ sits on the phase space at the cohomological level. We construct flows in surfaces having isolated non-saddle sets with a prescribed structure for its region of influence. We also study parametrized families of smooth flows and continuations of non-saddle sets.
In this paper we give an upper bound for the number of SRB measures of saddle type of local diffeomorphisms of boundaryless manifolds in terms of maximal cardinality of set of periodic points without any homoclinic relation.
Following Part~I, we consider a class of reversible systems and study bifurcations of homoclinic orbits to hyperbolic saddle equilibria. Here we concentrate on the case in which homoclinic orbits are symmetric, so that only one control parameter is enough to treat their bifurcations, as in Hamiltonian systems. First, we modify and extend arguments of Part~I to show in a form applicable to general systems discussed there that if such bifurcations occur in four-dimensional systems, then variational equations around the homoclinic orbits are integrable in the meaning of differential Galois theory…
We study bifurcations of homoclinic orbits to hyperbolic saddle equilibria in a class of four-dimensional systems which may be Hamiltonian or not. Only one parameter is enough to treat these types of bifurcations in Hamiltonian systems but two parameters are needed in general systems. We apply a version of Melnikov's method due to Gruendler to obtain saddle-node and pitchfork types of bifurcation results for homoclinic orbits. Furthermore we prove that if these bifurcations occur, then the variational equations around the homoclinic orbits are integrable in the meaning of differential Galois t…
We prove that for a generic $C^1$-diffeomorphism existence of a homoclinic class with periodic saddles of different indices (dimension of the unstable bundle) implies existence an invariant ergodic non-hyperbolic (one of the Lyapunov exponents is equal to zero) measure of $f$.
We establish an equivalence between infinitely many asymptotically stable periodic solutions and subsumed homoclinic connections for $N$-dimensional piecewise-linear continuous maps. These features arise as a codimension-three phenomenon. The periodic solutions are single-round: they each involve one excursion away from a central saddle-type periodic solution. The homoclinic connection is subsumed in the sense that one branch of the unstable manifold of the saddle solution is contained entirely within its stable manifold. The results are proved by using exact expressions for the periodic solut…
We show that $C^1$-generically for diffeomorphisms of manifolds of dimension $d\geq3$, a homoclinic class containing saddles of different indices has a residual subset where the orbit of any point has historic behavior.
We study dynamics and bifurcations of 2-dimensional reversible maps having a symmetric saddle fixed point with an asymmetric pair of nontransversal homoclinic orbits (a symmetric nontransversal homoclinic figure-8). We consider one-parameter families of reversible maps unfolding the initial homoclinic tangency and prove the existence of infinitely many sequences (cascades) of bifurcations related to the birth of asymptotically stable, unstable and elliptic periodic orbits.
We consider the bifurcation diagram in a suitable parameter plane of a quadratic vector field in $\mathbb{R}^3$ that features a homoclinic flip bifurcation of the most complicated type. This codimension-two bifurcation is characterized by a change of orientability of associated two-dimensional manifolds and generates infinite families of secondary bifurcations. We show that curves of secondary $n$-homoclinic bifurcations accumulate on a curve of a heteroclinic bifurcation involving infinity. We present an adaptation of the technique known as Lin's method that enables us to compute such connect…
Let p be a saddle fixed point for an orientation-preserving surface diffeomorphism f admitting a homoclinic point q. Let V be an open 2-cell bounded by a simple loop formed by two arcs joining p to q lying respectively in the stable and unstable curves at p. It is shown that f|V has fixed point index 1 or 2 depending only on the geometry of V near p.
We study a homoclinic flip bifurcation of case~\textbf{C}, where a homoclinic orbit to a saddle equilibrium with real eigenvalues changes from being orientable to nonorientable. This bifurcation is of codimension two, and it is the lowest codimension for a homoclinic bifurcation of a real saddle to generate chaotic behavior in the form of (suspended) Smale horseshoes and strange attractors. We present a detailed numerical case study of how global stable and unstable manifolds of the saddle equilibrium and of bifurcating periodic orbits interact close to such bifurcation. This is a step forward…
In this paper, we study a two-parameter family of two-dimensional diffeomorphisms such that it has a cubic homoclinic tangency unfolding generically which is associated with a dissipative saddle point. Our first theorem presents an open set in the parameter-plane such that, for any parameter value in the open set, there exists a one-parameter subfamily through this value exhibiting cubically related persistent contact-making and contact-breaking quadratic tangencies. Moreover, the second theorem shows that any such two-parameter family satisfies Wang-Young's conditions which guarantee that it …
We consider a homoclinic orbit to a saddle fixed point of an arbitrary $C^\infty$ map $f$ on $\mathbb{R}^2$ and study the phenomenon that $f$ has an infinite family of asymptotically stable, single-round periodic solutions. From classical theory, this requires $f$ to have a homoclinic tangency. We show it also necessary for $f$ to satisfy a `global resonance' condition and for the eigenvalues associated with the fixed point, $λ$ and $σ$, to satisfy $|λσ| = 1$. The phenomenon is codimension-three in the case $λσ= -1$, but codimension-four in the case $λσ= 1$ because here the coefficients of the…
The Nielsen-Thurston theory of surface diffeomorphisms shows that useful dynamical information can be obtained about a surface diffeomorphism from a finite collection of periodic orbits. In this paper, we extend these results to homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits of saddle points. These orbits are most readily computed and studied as intersections of unstable and stable manifolds comprising homoclinic or heteroclinic tangles in the surface. We show how to compute a map of a one-dimensional space similar to a train-track which represents the isotopy-stable dynamics of the surface diffeomorphism …
We describe a method for computing an atlas for the stable or unstable manifold attached to an equilibrium point, and implement the method for the saddle-focus libration points of the planar equilateral restricted four body problem. We employ the method at the maximally symmetric case of equal masses, where we compute atlases for both the stable and unstable manifolds. The resulting atlases are comprised of thousands of individual chart maps, with each chart represented by a two variable Taylor polynomial. Post-processing the atlas data yields approximate intersections of the invariant manifol…
We prove that a pair of heterodimensional cycles can be born at the bifurcations of a pair of Shilnikov loops (homoclinic loops to a saddle-focus equilibrium) having a one-dimensional unstable manifold in a volume-hyperbolic flow with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. We also show that these heterodimensional cycles can belong to a chain-transitive attractor of the system along with persistent homoclinic tangency.
In this paper we study homoclinic tangles formed by transversal intersections of the stable and the unstable manifold of a {\it non-resonant, dissipative} homoclinic saddle point in periodically perturbed second order equations. We prove that the dynamics of these homoclinic tangles are that of {\it infinitely wrapped horseshoe maps}. Using $μ$ as a parameter representing the magnitude of the perturbations, we prove that (a) there exist infinitely many disjoint open intervals of $μ$, accumulating at $μ= 0$, such that the entire homoclinic tangle of the perturbed equation consists of one single…
We study the orbit behavior of a four dimensional smooth symplectic diffeomorphism $f$ near a homoclinic orbit $Γ$ to an 1-elliptic fixed point under some natural genericity assumptions. 1-elliptic fixed point has two real eigenvalues out of unit circle and two others on the unit circle. Thus there is a smooth 2-dimensional center manifold $W^c$ where the restriction of the diffeomorphism has the elliptic fixed point supposed to be generic (no strong resonances and first Birkhoff coefficient is nonzero). Moser's theorem guarantees the existence of a positive measure set of KAM invariant curves…
In this paper we present the scenario of the occurrence of strongly dissipative mixed dynamics in two-dimensional reversible diffeomorphisms, using as an example the system describing a motion of two point vortices under the influence of wave perturbation and shear flow. For mixed dynamics of this type the chaotic attractor intersects with the chaotic repeller, but their intersection forms a "thin" set. The main stage of this scenario is the appearance of homoclinic structures for a symmetric saddle orbit which arise after crisis of a homoclinic attractor and repeller.
We consider a scenario when a stable and unstable manifolds of compact center manifold of a saddle-center coincide. The normal form of the ODE governing the system near the center manifold is derived and so is the normal form of the return map to the neighbourhood of the center manifold. The limit dynamics of the return map is investigated by showing that it might take the form of a Henon-like map possessing a Lorenz-like attractor or satisfy 'cone-field condition' resulting in partial hyperbolicity. We consider also motivating example from game theory.
We consider the conservative Hénon family at the period-doubling bifurcation of its fixed point and demonstrate that the separatrices of the fixed saddle point nearing the bifurcation split exponentially: given that $λ_+$ is the smaller of the eigenvalues of the saddle point, the angle between the separatrices along the homoclinic orbit satisfies $$\sin α= O(e^{-{π^2 \over \log |λ_+|}})+ O\left( e^{-2 (1-κ) {π^2 \over \log |λ_+|}} \right),$$ for any positive $κ<1$.
In this paper we study the existence of heteroclinic cycles in generic unfoldings of nilpotent singularities. Namely we prove that any nilpotent singularity of codimension four in $\mathbb{R}^4$ unfolds generically a bifurcation hypersurface of bifocal homoclinic orbits, that is, homoclinic orbits to equilibrium points with two pairs of complex eigenvalues. We also prove that any nilpotent singularity of codimension three in $\mathbb{R}^3$ unfolds generically a bifurcation curve of heteroclinic cycles between two saddle-focus equilibrium points with different stability indexes. Under generic a…
In this paper, a modified van der Pol oscillator equation is considered which appears in several heart action models. We study its global dynamics and verify many interesting bifurcations such as a Hopf bifurcation, a heteroclinic saddle connection, and a homoclinic saddle connection. Some of these bifurcations are detected by using Conley index methods. We demonstrate how the study of connection matrices and transition matrices shows how to select interesting parameter values for simulations.
We study two-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian systems. Let us assume that the zero energy level of a real-analytic Hamiltonian function $H:\mathbb{R}^4 \to \mathbb{R}$ contains a saddle-center equilibrium point lying in a strictly convex sphere-like singular subset $S_0\subset H^{-1}(0)$. From previous work [de Paulo-Salomão, Memoirs of the AMS] we know that for any small energy $E>0$, the energy level $H^{-1}(E)$ contains a closed $3$-ball $S_E$ in a neighborhood of $S_0$ admitting a singular foliation called $2-3$ foliation. One of the binding orbits of this singular foliation is the Lyapunoff …
Lorenz attractors are important objects in the modern theory of chaos. The reason from one side is that they are met in various natural applications (fluid dynamics, mechanics, laser dynamics, etc.). At the same time, Lorenz attractors are robust, in the sense that they are generally not destroyed by small perturbations (autonomous, non-autonomous, stochastic). This allows us to be sure that the observed in the experiment object is exactly the chaotic attractor, rather than a long-time periodic orbit. Discrete-time analogs of the Lorenz attractor possess even more complicated structure -- they…
Time-periodic perturbations of an asymmetric Duffing-Van-der-Pol equation close to an integrable equation with a homoclinic "figure-eight" of a saddle are considered. The behavior of solutions outside the neighborhood of "figure-eight" is studied analytically. The problem of limit cycles for an autonomous equation is solved and resonance zones for a nonautonomous equation are analyzed. The behavior of the separatrices of a fixed saddle point of the Poincare map in the small neighborhood of the unperturbed "figure-eight" is ascertained. The results obtained are illustrated by numerical computat…
The stable and unstable manifolds of a saddle fixed point (SFP) of the Bonhoeffer-van der Pol oscillator are numerically studied. A correspondence between the existence of homoclinic tangencies (whic are related to the creation or destruction of Smale horseshoes) and the chaos observed in the bifurcation diagram is described. It is observed that in the non-chaotic zones of the bifurcation diagram, there may or may not be Smale horseshoes, but there are no homoclinic tangencies.
The attractors of a dynamical system govern its typical long-term behaviour. The presence of many attractors is significant as it means the behaviour is heavily dependent on the initial conditions. To understand how large numbers of attractors can coexist, in this thesis we study the occurrence of infinitely many stable single-round periodic solutions associated with homoclinic connections in two-dimensional maps. We show this phenomenon has a relatively high codimension requiring a homoclinic tangency and `global resonance', as has been described previously in the area-preserving setting. How…
We numerically investigate the branching of temporally localized, two-pulse periodic traveling waves from one-pulse periodic traveling waves with non-oscillating tails in delay differential equations (DDEs) with large delay. Solutions of this type are commonly referred to as temporal dissipative solitons (TDSs) in applications, and we adopt this term here. We show by means of a prototypical example that -- analogous to traveling pulses in reaction-diffusion partial differential equations (PDEs) -- the branching of two-pulse TDSs from one-pulse TDSs with non-oscillating tails is organized by co…
In the space of polynomial maps of $\mathbb R^2$ of degree at least two, there are codimension $3$ laminations of maps with at least $3$ period doubling Cantor attractors. The leafs of the laminations are real-analytic and they have uniform diameter. The closure of each lamination contains the codimension one tangency locus of a saddle point. Asymptotically, the leafs of each lamination align with the leafs of the eigenvalue foliation. This is an example of general coexistence theorems valid for higher dimensional real-analytic unfoldings of two dimensional homoclinic tangencies.
Given a saddle fixed point of a surface diffeomorphism, its stable and unstable curves $W^S$ and $W^U$ often form a homoclinic tangle. Given such a tangle, we use topological methods to find periodic points of the diffeomorphism, using only a subset of the tangle with finitely many points of intersection, which we call a trellis. We typically obtain exponential growth of periodic orbits, symbolic dynamics and a strictly positive lower bound for topological entropy. For a simple example occurring in the Henon family, we show that the topological entropy is at least 0.527.
