Periodic orbits and cycles, respectively, play a significant role in discrete- and continuous-time dynamical systems (i.e. maps and flows). To succinctly describe their shifts when the system is applied perturbation, the notions of functional and functional derivative are borrowed from functional analysis to consider the whole system as an argument of the geometric representation of the periodic orbit or cycle. The shifts of an orbit/trajectory and periodic orbit/cycle are analyzed and concluded as formulae for maps/flows, respectively. The theory shall be beneficial for analyzing sensitivity to perturbations, and optimizing and controlling various systems.
Our first purpose is to study the stability of linear flows on real, connected, compact, semisimple Lie groups. After, we study and classify periodic orbits of linear and invariant flows. In particular, we obtain a version of Poincaré-Bendixon's Theorem. As an application, we present periodic orbits of linear or invariant flows on $SO(3)$ or $SU(2)$, and we classify periodic orbits of a linear or invariant system on $SO(4)$.
We consider the plane 3 body problem with 2 of the masses small. Periodic solutions with near collisions of small bodies were named by Poincaré second species periodic solutions. Such solutions shadow chains of collision orbits of 2 uncoupled Kepler problems. Poincaré only sketched the proof of the existence of second species solutions. Rigorous proofs appeared much later and only for the restricted 3 body problem. We develop a variational approach to the existence of second species periodic solutions for the nonrestricted 3 body problem. As an application, we give a rigorous proof of the exis…
In this paper we prove the existence of multiple periodic solutions (harmonic and subharmonic) for a class of planar Hamiltonian systems which include the case of the second order scalar ODE $x'' + a(t)g(x) = 0$ with $g$ satisfying a one-sided condition of sublinear type. We consider the classical approach based on the Poincaré-Birkhoff fixed point theorem as well as some refinements on the side of the theory of bend-twist maps and topological horseshoes. The case of complex dynamics is investigated, too.
Poincaré maps are an integral aspect to our understanding and analysis of nonlinear dynamical systems. Despite this fact, the construction of these maps remains elusive and is primarily left to simple motivating examples. In this manuscript we propose a method of data-driven discovery of Poincaré maps based upon sparse regression techniques, specifically the sparse identification of nonlinear dynamics (SINDy) algorithm. This work can be used to determine the dynamics on and near invariant manifolds of a given dynamical system, as well as provide long-time forecasting of the coarse-grained dyna…
We present a systematic methodology to determine and locate analytically isolated periodic points of discrete and continuous dynamical systems with algebraic nature. We apply this method to a wide range of examples, including a one-parameter family of counterexamples to the discrete Markus-Yamabe conjecture (La Salle conjecture); the study of the low periods of a Lotka-Volterra-type map; the existence of three limit cycles for a piece-wise linear planar vector field; a new counterexample of Kouchnirenko's conjecture; and an alternative proof of the existence of a class of symmetric central con…
We implement an infinite iteration scheme of Poincare-Dulac normal form reductions to establish an energy estimate on the one-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) in C_t L^2(T), without using any auxiliary function space. This allows us to construct weak solutions of NLS in C_t L^2(T)$ with initial data in L^2(T) as limits of classical solutions. As a consequence of our construction, we also prove unconditional well-posedness of NLS in H^s(T) for s \geq 1/6.
A system of autonomous differential equations with a stable limit cycle and perturbed by small white noise is analyzed in this work. In the vicinity of the limit cycle of the unperturbed deterministic system, we define, construct, and analyze the Poincare map of the randomly perturbed periodic motion. We show that the time of the first exit from a small neighborhood of the fixed point of the map, which corresponds to the unperturbed periodic orbit, is well approximated by the geometric distribution. The parameter of the geometric distribution tends zero together with the noise intensity. There…
In the paper we develop a method to evaluate the topological degree of the Poincare map of the mathematical model of narrow lagoon subject to a T-periodic forcing. Using the method developved we arrive to the conditions for the parameteres that guarantee the existence of T-periodic solutions in a given region. The difficulty towards implementing this plan is caused by the fact that the direct employing of M.A. Krasnoselski-A.I. Perov irreversibility approach leads to a singular vector field.
Multi-shooting parameterization methods for invariant manifolds and heteroclinics of 2 DOF Hamiltonian Poincaré maps, with applications to celestial resonant dynamics
Periodic orbits are among the simplest non-equilibrium solutions to dynamical systems, and they play a significant role in our modern understanding of the rich structures observed in many systems. For example, it is known that embedded within any chaotic attractor are infinitely many unstable periodic orbits (UPOs) and so a chaotic trajectory can be thought of as `jumping' from one UPO to another in a seemingly unpredictable manner. A number of studies have sought to exploit the existence of these UPOs to control a chaotic system. These methods rely on introducing small, precise parameter mani…
It is known that many peculiar nonlinear vibration problems in impacting systems are caused by grazing incidences. Such bifurcation phenomena are normally investigated through the Poincare map. The discrete-time map of a simple impact oscillator was derived by Nordmark, which showed that there should be a square-root singularity in the Jacobian matrix close to the grazing condition. In this paper we show that the square root singularity will be expressed only in the trace of the Jacobian matrix, while the determinant remains invariant across the grazing condition.
It is shown that applying manifold learning techniques to Poincaré sections of high-dimensional, chaotic dynamical systems can uncover their low-dimensional topological organization. Manifold learning provides a low-dimensional embedding and intrinsic coordinates for the parametrization of data on the Poincaré section, facilitating the construction of return maps with well defined symbolic dynamics. The method is illustrated by numerical examples for the Rössler attractor and the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation. For the latter we present the reduction of the high-dimensional, continuous-time flo…
We study an interplay between delay and discontinuous hysteresis in dynamical systems. After having established existence and uniqueness of solutions, we focus on the analysis of stability of periodic solutions. The main object we study is a Poincaré map that is infinite-dimensional due to delay and non-differentiable due to hysteresis. We propose a general functional framework based on the fractional order Sobolev--Slobodeckij spaces and explicitly obtain a formal linearization of the Poincaré map in these spaces. Furthermore, we prove that the spectrum of this formal linearization determines…
We construct a Poincaré map $\mathcal{P}_h$ for the positive horocycle flow on the modular surface $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})\backslash \mathbb{H}$, and begin a systematic study of its dynamical properties. In particular we give a complete characterisation of the periodic orbits of $\mathcal{P}_h$, and show that they are equidistributed with respect to the invariant measure of $\mathcal{P}_h$ and that they can be organised in a tree by using the Stern-Brocot tree of rational numbers. In addition we introduce a time-reparameterisation of $\mathcal{P}_h$ which gives an insight into the dynamics of the n…
We consider stochastic differential equations, obtained by adding weak Gaussian white noise to ordinary differential equations admitting $N$ asymptotically stable periodic orbits. We construct a discrete-time, continuous-space Markov chain, called a random Poincaré map, which encodes the metastable behaviour of the system. We show that this process admits exactly $N$ eigenvalues which are exponentially close to $1$, and provide expressions for these eigenvalues and their left and right eigenfunctions in terms of committor functions of neighbourhoods of periodic orbits. The eigenvalues and eige…
Previous studies have shown that, in a diverge-merge network with two intermediate links (the DM network), the kinematic wave model always admits stationary solutions under constant boundary conditions, but periodic oscillations can develop from empty initial conditions. Such contradictory observations suggest that the stationary states be unstable. In this study we develop a new approach to investigate the stability property of traffic flow in this and other networks. Based on the observation that kinematic waves propagate in a circular path when only one of the two intermediate links is cong…
We study periodic solutions of a one-degree of freedom micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) with a parallel-plate capacitor under $T$--periodic electrostatic forcing. We obtain analytical results concerning the existence of $T-$ periodic solutions of the problem in the case of arbitrary nonlinear restoring force, as well as when the moving plate is attached to a spring fabricated using graphene. We then demonstrate numerically on a $T-$ periodic Poincar{é} map of the flow that these solutions are generally locally stable with large "islands" of initial conditions around them, within which th…
This paper is concerned with closed orbits of non-smooth vector fields on the plane. For a subclass of non-smooth vector fields we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of canard kind solutions. By means of a regularization we prove that the canard cycles are singular orbits of singular perturbation problems which are limit periodic sets of a sequence of limit cycles. Moreover, we generalize the Poincaré Index for non-smooth vector fields.
Replicator dynamics, the continuous-time analogue of Multiplicative Weights Updates, is the main dynamic in evolutionary game theory. In simple evolutionary zero-sum games, such as Rock-Paper-Scissors, replicator dynamic is periodic \cite{zeeman1980population}, however, its behavior in higher dimensions is not well understood. We provide a complete characterization of its behavior in zero-sum evolutionary games. We prove that, if and only if, the system has an interior Nash equilibrium, the dynamics exhibit Poincaré recurrence, i.e., almost all orbits come arbitrary close to their initial cond…
We consider the model of a point-vortex under a periodic perturbation and give sufficient conditions for the existence of generalized quasi-periodic solutions with rotation number. The proof uses Aubry-Mather theory to obtain the existence of a family of minimal orbits of the Poincaré map associated to the system.
We consider Reeb flows on the tight $3$-sphere admitting a pair of closed orbits forming a Hopf link. If the rotation numbers associated to the transverse linearized dynamics at these orbits fail to satisfy a certain resonance condition then there exist infinitely many periodic trajectories distinguished by their linking numbers with the components of the link. This result admits a natural comparison to the Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem on area-preserving annulus homeomorphisms. An analogous theorem holds on $SO(3)$ and applies to geodesic flows of Finsler metrics on $S^2$.
The asymptotic behaviour of the solutions of Poincaré's functional equation $f(λz)=p(f(z))$ ($λ>1$) for $p$ a real polynomial of degree $\geq2$ is studied in angular regions of the complex plain. The constancy of an occurring periodic function is characterised in terms of geometric properties of the Julia set of $p$. For real Julia sets we give inequalities for multipliers of Pommerenke-Levin-Yoccoz type. The distribution of zeros of $f$ is related to the harmonic measure on the Julia set of $p$.
We construct a Poincaré section for the horocycle flow on the modular surface $SL(2, \R)/SL(2, \Z)$, and study the associated first return map, which coincides with a transformation (the {\it BCZ map}) defined by Boca-Cobeli-Zaharescu. We classify ergodic invariant measures for this map and prove equidistribution of periodic orbits. As corollaries, we obtain results on the average depth of cusp excursions and on the distribution of gaps for Farey sequences and slopes of lattice vectors.
In this article we consider the existence of a family of doubly-symmetric periodic orbits in the spatial circular Hill's lunar problem, in which the secondary primary at the origin is oblate. The existence is shown by applying a fixed point theorem to the equations with periodical conditions expressed in Poincare-Delaunay elements for the double symmetries after eliminating the short periodic effects in the first-order perturbations of the approximated system.
Understanding traffic statics and dynamics in urban networks is critical to develop effective control and management strategies. In this paper, we provide a novel approach to study the traffic statics and dynamics in a signalized double-ring network, which can provide insights into the operation of more general signalized traffic networks. Under the framework of the link queue model (LQM) and the assumption of a triangular traffic flow fundamental diagram, the signalized double-ring network is studied as a switched affine system. Due to periodic signal regulations, periodic density evolution o…
At the beginning of the twentieth century while Henri Poincaré (1854-1912) was already deeply involved in the developments of wireless telegraphy, he was invited, in 1908, to give a series of lectures at the École Supérieure des Postes et Télégraphes (today Sup'Télecom). In the last part of his presentation he established that the necessary condition for the existence of a stable regime of maintained oscillations in a device of radio engineering completely analogous to the triode: the singing arc, is the presence in the phase plane of stable limit cycle. The aim of this work is to prove that t…
We study dynamical systems that switch between two different vector fields depending on a discrete variable and with a delay. When the delay reaches a problem-dependent critical value so-called event collisions occur. This paper classifies and analyzes event collisions, a special type of discontinuity induced bifurcations, for periodic orbits. Our focus is on event collisions of symmetric periodic orbits in systems with full reflection symmetry, a symmetry that is prevalent in applications. We derive an implicit expression for the Poincare map near the colliding periodic orbit. The Poincare ma…
For an analytic differential system in $\mathbb R^n$ with a periodic orbit, we will prove that if the system is analytically integrable around the periodic orbit, i.e. it has $n-1$ functionally independent analytic first integrals defined in a neighborhood of the periodic orbit, then the system is analytically equivalent to its Poincaré--Dulac type normal form. This result is an extension for analytic integrable differential systems around a singularity to the ones around a periodic orbit.
This paper concerns the classical dynamics of three coupled rotors: equal masses moving on a circle subject to attractive cosine inter-particle potentials. It is a simpler variant of the gravitational three-body problem and also arises as the classical limit of a model of coupled Josephson junctions. Unlike in the gravitational problem, there are no singularities (neither collisional nor non-collisional), leading to global existence and uniqueness of solutions. In appropriate units, the non-negative energy $E$ of the relative motion is the only free parameter. We find analogues of the Euler-La…
We apply topological methods to the study of the set of harmonic solutions of periodically perturbed autonomous ordinary differential equations on differentiable manifolds, allowing the perturbing term to contain a fixed delay. In the crucial step, in order to cope with the delay, we define a suitable (infinite dimensional) notion of Poincaré $T$-translation operator and prove a formula that, in the unperturbed case, allows the computation of its fixed point index.
For a class of flows on polytopes, including many examples from Evolutionary Game Theory, we describe a piecewise linear model which encapsulates the asymptotic dynamics along the heteroclinic network formed out of the polytope's vertexes and edges. This piecewise linear flow is easy to compute even in higher dimensions, which allows the usage of numeric algorithms to find invariant dynamical structures such as periodic, homoclinic or heteroclinic orbits, which if robust persist as invariant dynamical structures of the original flow. We apply this method to prove the existence of chaotic behav…
Let $f$ be a polynomial automorphism of the affine plane. In this paper we consider the possibility for it to possess infinitely many periodic points on an algebraic curve $C$. We conjecture that this happens if and only if $f$ admits a time-reversal symmetry; in particular the Jacobian $\mathrm{Jac}(f)$ must be a root of unity. As a step towards this conjecture, we prove that the Jacobian of $f$ and all its Galois conjugates lie on the unit circle in the complex plane. Under mild additional assumptions we are able to conclude that indeed $\mathrm{Jac}(f)$ is a root of unity. We use these resu…
A new geometric criterion is derived for the existence of chaos in continuous-time autonomous systems in three-dimensional Euclidean spaces, where a type of Smale horseshoe in a subshift of finite type exists, but the intersection of stable and unstable manifolds of two points on a hyperbolic periodic orbit does not imply the existence of a Smale horseshoe of the same type on cross-sections of these two points. This criterion is based on the existence of a hyperbolic periodic orbit, differing from the classical equilibrium-based Shilnikov criterion and the condition of transversal homoclinic o…
We will show that the period $T$ of a closed orbit of the planar circular restricted three-body problem (viewed on rotating coordinates) depends on the region it encloses. Roughly speaking, we show that, $2 T=kπ+\int_Ωg$ where $k$ is an integer, $Ω$ is the region enclosed by the periodic orbit and $g:\mathbb{R}^2\to \mathbb{R}$ is a function that only depends on the constant $C$ known as the Jacobian integral; it does not depend on $Ω$. This theorem has a Keplerian flavor in the sense that it relates the period with the space "swept" by the orbit. As an application, we prove that there is a ne…
We study semiflows satisfying a certain squeezing condition with respect to a quadratic functional in some Banach space. Under certain compactness assumptions from our previous results it follows that there exists an invariant manifold, which is under more restrictive conditions is an inertial manifold. In the case of a two-dimensional manifold we obtain an analog of the Poincaré-Bendixson theorem on the trichotomy of $ω$-limit sets. Moreover, we obtain conditions for the existence of an orbitally stable periodic orbit. Our approach unifies a series of papers by R.~A.~Smith, establishes their …
Since Poincaré, periodic orbits have been one of the most important objects in dynamical systems. However, searching them is in general quite difficult. A common way to find them is to construct families of periodic orbits which start at obvious periodic orbits. On the other hand, given two periodic orbits one might ask if they are connected by an orbit cylinder, i.e., by a one-parameter family of periodic orbits. In this article we study this question for a certain class of periodic orbits in the planar circular restricted three-body problem. Our strategy is to compare the Cieliebak-Frauenfel…
