We carry out the spectral analysis of singular matrix valued perturbations of 3-dimensional Dirac operators with variable magnetic field of constant direction. Under suitable assumptions on the magnetic field and on the perturbations, we obtain a limiting absorption principle, we prove the absence of singular continuous spectrum in certain intervals and state properties of the point spectrum. Constant, periodic as well as diverging magnetic fields are covered, and Coulomb potentials up to the physical nuclear charge Z<137 are allowed. The importance of an internal-type operator (a 2-dimensional Dirac operator) is also revealed in our study. The proofs rely on commutator methods.
The bound state solution of Coulomb Potentials in the Dirac equation is calculated for position dependent mass function M(r) within the framework of asymptotic iteration method (AIM). The eigenfunctions are derived in terms of hypergeometric function and function generator equation of AIM.
We study the two-body Dirac operator in a bounded external field and for a class of unbounded pair-interaction potentials, both repulsive and attractive, including the Coulomb type. Provided the coupling constant of the pair-interaction fulfills a certain bound, we prove existence of a self-adjoint extension of this operator which is uniquely distinguished by means of finite potential energy. In the case of Coulomb interaction, we require as a technical assumption the coupling constant to be bounded by $2/π$.
With the aid of a modified similarity transformation we obtained exact energy eigenvalues of the generalized Dirac-Coulomb equation. This equation consists of the time component of the Lorentz 4-vector potential V_v(r)=-A_1/r, and a Lorentz scalar potential V_s(r)=-A_2/r. The transformed radial equations are so simple that their solutions are inferred from the conventional solutions of the Schrodinger equation.
We obtain exact solution of the Dirac equation for a charged particle with position-dependent mass in the Coulomb field. The effective mass of the spinor has a relativistic component which is proportional to the square of the Compton wavelength and varies as 1/r. It is suggested that this model could be used as a tool in the renormalization of ultraviolet divergences in field theory. The discrete energy spectrum and spinor wave-function are obtained explicitly.
In this paper, we present the Dirac equation for the Mobius-square-Yukawa potentials including the tensor interaction term within the framework of pseudospin and spin symmetry limit with arbitrary spin-orbit quantum number . We obtained the energy eigenvalues and the corresponding wave functions using the supersymmetry method. The limiting cases of this potential model reduce to the Deng-Fan, Yukawa and Coulomb potentials, respectively
It is shown that there exist several ways to treat the quantum-mechanical Coulomb problem for a Dirac particle in flat Minkowski space with the help of the Heun differential equation, Fuchs's equation with four singular points. When extending the problem to curved spaces of constant curvature, Lobachevsky H_{3} and Rimann S_{3}, there arise 2-nd order differential equations of the Fuchs type with 6 singular points, a method to get relevant equations with five singular points has been elaborated.
In this work we construct self-adjoint extensions of the Dirac operator associated to Hermitian matrix potentials with Coulomb decay and prove that the domain is maximal. The result is obtained by means of a Hardy-Dirac type inequality. In particular, we can work with some electromagnetic potentials such that both, the electric potential and the magnetic one, have Coulomb type singularity.
For $n\in\{2,3\}$ we prove minimax characterisations of eigenvalues in the gap of the $n$ dimensional Dirac operator with an potential, which may have a Coulomb singularity with a coupling constant up to the critical value $1/(4-n)$. This result implies a so-called Hardy-Dirac inequality, which can be used to define a distinguished self-adjoint extension of the Coulomb-Dirac operator defined on $\mathsf{C}_{0}^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^n\setminus\{0\};\mathbb{C}^{2(n-1)})$, as long as the coupling constant does not exceed $1/(4-n)$. We also find an explicit description of an operator core of this op…
We derive a classification of the self-adjoint extensions of the three-dimensional Dirac-Coulomb operator in the critical regime of the Coulomb coupling. Our approach is solely based upon the Kre{\uı}n-Višik-Birman extension scheme, or also on Grubb's universal classification theory, as opposite to previous works within the standard von Neumann framework. This let the boundary condition of self-adjointness emerge, neatly and intrinsically, as a multiplicative constraint between regular and singular part of the functions in the domain of the extension, the multiplicative constant giving also im…
In their recent paper (Inter. J. Mod. Phys. A 26 (2011) 1011), Zarrinkamar and coauthors have considered the radial Dirac equation for a Coulomb scalar, vector and tensor interaction. The exact solutions for the energy eigenvalues they have reported for spin-symmetry and pseudo-spin symmetry were mishandled and are incorrect eigenvalues, therefore.
In this paper we prove some uniform asymptotic estimates for confluent hypergeometric functions making use of the steepest-descent method. As an application, we obtain Strichartz estimates with loss of angular derivatives for the massless Dirac-Coulomb equation in $3D$.
The observation that the existance of the amazing reality and discreteness of the spectrum need not be attributed to the Hermiticity of the Hamiltonian is reemphasized in the context of the non-Hermitian Dirac and Klein-Gordon Hamiltonians. Complex Coulombic potentials are considered.
In this note we give a concise review of the present state-of-art for the problem of self-adjoint realisations for the Dirac operator with a Coulomb-like singular scalar potential $V(\vec x)=ϕ(\vec x) I_4$. We try to follow the historical and conceptual path that leads to the present understanding of the problem and to highlight the techniques employed and the main ideas. In the final part we outline a few major open questions that concern the topical problem of the multiplicity of self-adjoint realisations of the model, and which are worth addressing in the future.
Closure relations satisfied by the radial Dirac-Coulomb Sturmians are proved analytically. The Sturmian expansion of the Dirac-Coulomb Green function is transformed to the form containing only series with summations running over non-negative indices. The main paper was published in J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 30 (1997) 825-61 [Erratum: 30 (1997) 2747], see also J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 31 (1998) 4963--90 [Erratum: 31 (1998) 7415-6].
We consider a single particle which is bound by a central potential and obeys the Dirac equation in d dimensions. We first apply the asymptotic iteration method to recover the known exact solutions for the pure Coulomb case. For a screened-Coulomb potential and for a Coulomb plus linear potential with linear scalar confinement, the method is used to obtain accurate approximate solutions for both eigenvalues and wave functions.
A model of 2D massive Dirac fermions, interacting with a instantaneous $1/r$ Coulomb interaction, is presented to mimic the physics of gapped graphene. The static polarization function is calculated explicitly to analyze screening effect at the finite temperature and density. Results are compared with the massless case . We also show that various other works can be reproduced within our model in a straightforward and unified manner.
For $ν\in[0, 1]$ let $D^ν$ be the distinguished self-adjoint realisation of the three-dimensional Coulomb-Dirac operator $-\mathrm i\boldsymbolα\cdot\nabla -ν|\cdot|^{-1}$. For $ν\in[0, 1)$ we prove the lower bound of the form $|D^ν| \geqslant C_ν\sqrt{-Δ}$, where $C_ν$ is found explicitly and is better then in all previous works on the topic. In the critical case $ν=1$ we prove that for every $λ\in [0, 1)$ there exists $K_λ>0$ such that the estimate $|D^{1}| \geqslant K_λa^{λ-1}(-Δ)^{λ/2} -a^{-1}$ holds for all $a >0$. As applications we extend the range of coupling constants in the proof of …
A single fermion is bound by a softcore central Coulomb potential V(r) = -v/(r^q + b^q)^(1/q), v>0, b>0, q \ge 1, in d>1 spatial dimensions. Envelope theory is used to construct analytic lower bounds for the discrete Dirac energy spectrum. The results are compared to accurate eigenvalues obtained numerically.
In this work we compute bound solutions for particles and anti-particles of the Dirac equation for a pure tensor radial Coulomb potential plus a constant. We find that the binding depends on the sign the tensor constant potential, and allows only bound solutions for a certain sign and magnitude of the $κ$ quantum number, which is related to the spin-orbit coupling in the Dirac equation. This relation is reversed for anti-particle solutions. On the other hand, the Coulomb tensor potential, although not biding, changes the range of $κ$ values for which there are bound solutions.
The one-particle Dirac Hamiltonian with Coulomb interaction is known to be realised, in a regime of large (critical) couplings, by an infinite multiplicity of distinct self-adjoint operators, including a distinguished, physically most natural one. For the latter, Sommerfeld's celebrated fine structure formula provides the well-known expression for the eigenvalues in the gap of the continuum spectrum. Exploiting our recent general classification of all other self-adjoint realisations, we generalise Sommerfeld's formula so as to determine the discrete spectrum of all other self-adjoint versions …
We consider solitary wave solutions to the Dirac--Coulomb system both from physical and mathematical points of view. Fermions interacting with gravity in the Newtonian limit are described by the model of Dirac fermions with the Coulomb attraction. This model also appears in certain condensed matter systems with emergent Dirac fermions interacting via optical phonons. In this model, the classical soliton solutions of equations of motion describe the physical objects that may be called polarons, in analogy to the solutions of the Choquard equation. We develop analytical methods for the Dirac--Co…
Let q and v be symmetric sesquilinear forms such that v is a form perturbation of q. Then we can associate a unique self-adjoint operator B to q+ v. Assuming that B has a gap (a, b) in the essential spectrum, we prove a minimax principle for the eigenvalues of B in (a, b) using a suitable orthogonal decomposition of the domain of q. This allows us to justify two minimax characterisations of eigenvalues in the gap of three-dimensional Dirac operators with electrostatic potentials having strong Coulomb singularities.
It was recently shown that the point spectrum of the separated Coulomb-Dirac operator H_0(k) is the limit of the point spectrum of the Dirac operator with anomalous magnetic moment H_a(k) as the anomaly parameter tends to 0; this spectral stability holds for all Coulomb coupling constants c for which H_0(k) has a distinguished self-adjoint extension if the angular momentum quantum number k is negative, but for positive k there are certain exceptional values for c. Here we obtain an explicit formula for these exceptional values. In particular, it implies spectral stability for the three-dimensi…
Considering different self-adjoint realisations of positively projected massless Coulomb-Dirac operators we find out, under which conditions any negative perturbation, however small, leads to emergence of negative spectrum. We also prove some weighted Lieb-Thirring estimates for negative eigenvalues of such operators. In the process we find explicit spectral representations for all self-adjoint realisations of massless Coulomb-Dirac operators on the half-line.
Using the approach the modified Euler-Lagrange field equation together with the corresponding Seiberg-Witten maps of the dynamical fields, a noncommutative Dirac equation with a Coulomb potential is derived. We then find the noncommutative modification the energy levels and the possible new transitions. In the nonrelativistic limit a general form of the hamiltonian of the hydrogen atom is obtained, and we show that the noncommmutativity plays the role of spin and magnetic field which gives the hyper fine structure.
We prove a sharp Hardy-type inequality for the Dirac operator. We exploit this inequality to obtain spectral properties of the Dirac operator perturbed with Hermitian matrix-valued potentials $\mathbf V$ of Coulomb type: we characterise its eigenvalues in terms of the Birman-Schwinger principle and we bound its discrete spectrum from below, showing that the \emph{ground-state energy} is reached if and only if $\mathbf V$ verifies some {rigidity} conditions. In the particular case of an electrostatic potential, these imply that $\mathbf V$ is the Coulomb potential.
We obtain a symmetric tridiagonal matrix representation of the Dirac-Coulomb operator in a suitable complete square integrable basis. Orthogonal polynomials techniques along with Darboux method are used to obtain the bound states energy spectrum, the relativistic scattering amplitudes and phase shifts from the asymptotic behavior of the polynomial solutions associated with the resulting three-term recursion relation.
We study the effect of spatially dependent mass function over the solution of the Dirac equation with the Coulomb potential in the (3+1)-dimensions for any arbitrary spin-orbit $κ$ state$.$ In the framework of the spin and pseudospin symmetry concept, the analytic bound state energy eigenvalues and the corresponding upper and lower two-component spinors of the two Dirac particles are obtained by means of the Nikiforov-Uvarov method, in closed form. This physical choice of the mass function leads to an exact analytical solution for the pseudospin part of the Dirac equation. The special cases $%…
We investigate the properties of self-adjointness of a two-dimensional Dirac operator on an infinite sector with infinite mass boundary conditions and in presence of a Coulomb-type potential with the singularity placed on the vertex. In the general case, we prove the appropriate Dirac-Hardy inequality and exploit the Kato-Rellich theory. In the explicit case of a Coulomb potential, we describe the self-adjoint extensions for all the intensities of the potential relying on a radial decomposition in partial wave subspaces adapted to the infinite-mass boundary conditions. Finally, we integrate ou…
We solve the Dirac equation approximately for the attractive scalar $S(r)$ and repulsive vector $V(r)$ Hulthén potentials including a Coulomb-like tensor potential with arbitrary spin-orbit coupling quantum number $κ.$ In the framework of the spin and pseudospin symmetric concept, we obtain the analytic energy spectrum and the corresponding two-component upper- and lower-spinors of the two Dirac particles by means of the Nikiforov-Uvarov method in closed form. The limit of zero tensor coupling and the non-relativistic solution are obtained. The energy spectrum for various levels is presented f…
We show that the point spectrum of the standard Coulomb-Dirac operator H_0 is the limit of the point spectrum of the Dirac operator with anomalous magnetic moment H_a as the anomaly parameter tends to 0. For negative angular momentum quantum number kappa, this holds for all Coulomb coupling constants c for which H_0 has a distinguished self-adjoint realisation. For positive kappa, however, there are some exceptional values for c, and in general an index shift between the eigenvalues of H_0 and the limits of eigenvalues of H_a appears, accompanied with additional oscillations of the eigenfuncti…
This paper is devoted to the study of the two-dimensional Dirac-Coulomb operator in presence of an Aharonov-Bohm external magnetic potential. We characterize the highest intensity of the magnetic field for which a two-dimensional magnetic Hardy inequality holds. Up to this critical magnetic field, the operator admits a distinguished self-adjoint extension and there is a notion of ground state energy, defined as the lowest eigenvalue in the gap of the continuous spectrum.
The Dirac equation for an electron in two spatial dimensions in the Coulomb and homogeneous magnetic fields is a physical example of quasi-exactly solvable systems. This model, however, does not belong to the classes based on the algebra $sl(2)$ which underlies most one-dimensional and effectively one-dimensional quasi-exactly solvable systems. In this paper we demonstrate that the quasi-exactly solvable differential equation possesses a hidden $osp(2,2)$ superalgebra.
We prove the existence of a $L^2$-normalized solitary wave solution for the Maxwell-Dirac equations in (3+1)-Minkowski space. In addition, for the Coulomb-Dirac model, describing fermions with attractive Coulomb interactions in the mean-field limit, we prove the existence of the (positive) energy minimizer.
We investigate the approximate solutions of the Dirac equation with the position-dependent mass particle in the Eckart potential field including the Coulomb tensor interaction by using the parametric Nikiforov-Uvarov method. Taking an appropriate approximation to deal with the centrifugal term, the Dirac energy states and the corresponding normalized two-spinor components of the wave function are obtained in closed form. Some special cases of our solution are investigated. Furthermore, we present the correct solutions obtained via the asymptotic iteration method which are in agreement with the…
We determine explicitly a boundary triple for the Dirac operator $H:=-iα\cdot \nabla + mβ+ \mathbb V(x)$ in $\mathbb R^3$, for $m\in\mathbb R$ and $\mathbb V(x)= |x|^{-1} ( ν\mathbb{I}_4 +μβ-i λα\cdot{x}/|x|\,β)$, with $ν,μ,λ\in \mathbb R$. Consequently we determine all the self-adjoint realizations of $H$ in terms of the behaviour of the functions of their domain in the origin. When $\sup_{x} |x||\mathbb V(x)| \leq 1$, we discuss the problem of selecting the distinguished extension requiring that its domain is included in the domain of the appropriate quadratic form.
The Dirac equation for an electron in two spatial dimensions in the Coulomb and homogeneous magnetic fields is discussed. For weak magnetic fields, the approximate energy values are obtained by semiclassical method. In the case with strong magnetic fields, we present the exact recursion relations that determine the coefficients of the series expansion of wave functions, the possible energies and the magnetic fields. It is found that analytic solutions are possible for a denumerably infinite set of magnetic field strengths. This system thus furnishes an example of the so-called quasi-exactly so…
The spatially-dependent mass Dirac equation is solved exactly for attractive scalar and repulsive vector Coulomb potentials including a tensor interaction potential under the spin and pseudospin (p-spin) symmetric limits by using the Laplace transformation method (LTM). Closed forms of the energy eigenvalue equation and wave functions are obtained for arbitrary spin-orbit quantum number Some numerical results are given too. The effect of the tensor interaction on the bound states is presented. It is shown that the tensor interaction removes the degeneracy between two states in the spin doublet…
The shifted-i expansion technique (SLET) is extended to solve for Dirac particle trapped in spherically symmetric scalar and/or 4-vector potentials. A parameter λ=0,1 is introduced in such a way that one can obtain the Klein-Gordon (KG) bound states from Dirac bound states. The 4-vector Coulomb, the scalar linear, and the equally mixed scalar and 4-vector power-law potentials are used in KG and Dirac equations. Exact numerical results are obtained for the 4-vector Coulomb potential in both KG and Dirac equations. Highly accurate and fast converging results are obtained for the scalar linear an…
By applying the Pekeris-type approximation to deal with the (pseudo or) centrifugal term, the spin and pseudospin symmetry solutions of the Dirac equation for the Rosen-Morse potential including a Coulomb-like tensor potential with arbitrary spin-orbit coupling quantum number $κ$ are obtained by standard method. It has been shown from the numerical results that the degeneracies between spin and pseudospin state doublets are removed by the tensor interaction. Special case of this potential, that is, the spin and pseudospin solutions of the Dirac equation with the modified Pöschl-Teller potentia…
We decouple the Dirac's radial equations in $D+1$ dimensions with Coulomb-type scalar and vector potentials through appropriate transformations. We study each of these uncoupled second-order equations in an algebraic way by using an $su(1,1)$ algebra realization. Based on the theory of irreducible representations, we find the energy spectrum and the radial eigenfunctions. We construct the Perelomov coherent states for the Sturmian basis, which is the basis for the unitary irreducible representation of the $su(1,1)$ Lie algebra. The physical radial coherent states for our problem are obtained b…
A novel realization of the classical SU(2) algebra is introduced for the Dirac relativistic hydrogen atom defining a set of operators that, besides, allow the factorization of the problem. An extra phase is needed as a new variable in order to define the algebra. We take advantage of the operators to solve the Dirac equation using algebraic methods. To acomplish this, a similar path to the one used in the angular momentum case is employed; hence, the radial eigenfuntions calculated comprise non unitary representations of the algebra. One of the interesting properties of such non unitary repres…
We study massless 1-dimensional Dirac-Coulomb Hamiltonians, that is, operators on the half-line of the form $D_{ω,λ}:=\begin{bmatrix}-\frac{λ+ω}{x}&-\partial_x \\ \partial_x & -\frac{λ-ω}{x}\end{bmatrix}$. We describe their closed realizations in the sense of the Hilbert space $L^2(\mathbb R_+,\mathbb C^2)$, allowing for complex values of the parameters $λ,ω$. In physical situations, $λ$ is proportional to the electric charge and $ω$ is related to the angular momentum. We focus on realizations of $D_{ω,λ}$ homogeneous of degree $-1$. They can be organized in a single holomorphic family of clos…
We consider a Dirac operator in three space dimensions, with an electrostatic (i.e. real-valued) potential $V(x)$, having a strong Coulomb-type singularity at the origin. This operator is not always essentially self-adjoint but admits a distinguished self-adjoint extension $D\_V$. In a first part we obtain new results on the domain of this extension, complementing previous works of Esteban and Loss. Then we prove the validity of min-max formulas for the eigenvalues in the spectral gap of $D\_V$, in a range of simple function spaces independent of $V$. Our results include the critical case $\li…
The Dirac equation for an electron in two spatial dimensions in the Coulomb and homogeneous magnetic fields is an example of the so-called quasi-exactly solvable models. The solvable parts of its spectrum was previously solved from the recursion relations. In this work we present a purely algebraic solution based on the Bethe ansatz equations. It is realised that, unlike the corresponding problems in the Schrödinger and the Klein-Gordon case, here the unknown parameters to be solved for in the Bethe ansatz equations include not only the roots of wave function assumed, but also a parameter from…
We prove some Hardy-Dirac inequalities with two different weights including measure valued and Coulombic ones. Those inequalities are used to construct distinguished self-adjoint extensions of Dirac operators for a class of diagonal potentials related to the weights in the above mentioned inequalities.
Distinguished selfadjoint extensions of Dirac operators are constructed for a class of potentials including Coulombic ones up to the critical case, $-|x|^{-1}$. The method uses Hardy-Dirac inequalities and quadratic form techniques.
We examine the bound state solutions of the Dirac equation under the spin and pseudospin symmetries for a new suggested combined potential, Hulten plus a class of Yukawa potential including a Coulomb-like tensor interaction. An improved scheme is employed to deal with the centrifugal (pseudo-centrifugal) term. Using the Nikiforov-Uvarov and SUSYQM methods, we analytically develop the relativistic energy eigenvalues and associated Dirac spinor components of wave functions. We find that both methods give entirely the same results. Modifiable of our results into some particular potential cases, u…
In this work, a spin $\frac 12$ relativistic particle described by a generalized potential containing both the Coulomb potential and a Lorentz scalar potential in Dirac equation is investigated in terms of the generalized ladder operators from supersymmetry in quantum mechanics. This formalism is applied for the generalized Dirac-Coulomb problem, which is an exactly solvable potential in relativistic quantum mechanics. We obtain the energy eigenvalues and calculate explicitly the energy eigenfunctions for the ground state and the first excited state.
We study the two dimensional massless Coulomb-Dirac operator restricted to its positive spectral subspace and prove estimates on the negative eigenvalues created by electromagnetic perturbations.
This paper is devoted to a general min-max characterization of the eigenvalues in a gap of the essential spectrum of a self-adjoint unbounded operator. We prove an abstract theorem, then we apply it to the case of Dirac operators with a Coulomb-like potential. The result is optimal for the Coulomb potential. An erratum is appended at the end of the tex.
We consider the quantum-mechanical problem of a relativistic Dirac particle moving in the Coulomb field of a point charge $Ze$. In the literature, it is often declared that a quantum-mechanical description of such a system does not exist for charge values exceeding the so-called critical charge with $% Z=α^{-1}=137$ based on the fact that the standard expression for the lower bound state energy yields complex values at overcritical charges. We show that from the mathematical standpoint, there is no problem in defining a self-adjoint Hamiltonian for any value of charge. What is more, the transi…
