This is a contribution to the Proc. of the O'Raifeartaigh Symposium on Non-Perturbative and Symmetry Methods in Field Theory (June 2006, Budapest, Hungary), published in SIGMA (Symmetry, Integrability and Geometry: Methods and Applications) at http://www.emis.de/journals/SIGMA/
An infinite family of quasi-maximally superintegrable Hamiltonians with a common set of (2N-3) integrals of the motion is introduced. The integrability properties of all these Hamiltonians are shown to be a consequence of a hidden non-standard quantum sl(2,R) Poisson coalgebra symmetry. As a concrete application, one of this Hamiltonians is shown to generate the geodesic motion on certain manifolds with a non-constant curvature that turns out to be a function of the deformation parameter z. Moreover, another Hamiltonian in this family is shown to generate geodesic motions on Riemannian and relativistic spaces all of whose sectional curvatures are constant and equal to the deformation parameter z. This approach can be generalized to arbitrary dimension by making use of coalgebra symmetry.
A constructive procedure to obtain superintegrable deformations of the classical Smorodinsky-Winternitz Hamiltonian by using quantum deformations of its underlying Poisson sl(2) coalgebra symmetry is introduced. Through this example, the general connection between coalgebra symmetry and quasi-maximal superintegrability is analysed. The notion of comodule algebra symmetry is also shown to be applicable in order to construct new integrable deformations of certain Smorodinsky-Winternitz systems.
We propose a unified description for the constants of motion for superintegrable deformations of the oscillator and Coulomb systems on N-dimensional Euclidean space, sphere and hyperboloid. We also consider the duality between these generalized systems and present some example.
A novel Hamiltonian system in n dimensions which admits the maximal number 2n-1 of functionally independent, quadratic first integrals is presented. This system turns out to be the first example of a maximally superintegrable Hamiltonian on an n-dimensional Riemannian space of nonconstant curvature, and it can be interpreted as the intrinsic Smorodinsky-Winternitz system on such a space. Moreover, we provide three different complete sets of integrals in involution and solve the equations of motion in closed form.
Generalizations of oscillator and Coulomb models are discussed via introduction of holomorphic coordinates. Complex Euclidean analogue of the Smorodinsky-Winternitz system is introduced and studied. Complex projective analogue of Rosochatius model is also discussed. Supersymmetric extensions of these models are considered.
The Stäckel transform is applied to the geodesic motion on Euclidean space, through the harmonic oscillator and Kepler-Coloumb potentials, in order to obtain maximally superintegrable classical systems on N-dimensional Riemannian spaces of nonconstant curvature. By one hand, the harmonic oscillator potential leads to two families of superintegrable systems which are interpreted as an intrinsic Kepler-Coloumb system on a hyperbolic curved space and as the so-called Darboux III oscillator. On the other, the Kepler-Coloumb potential gives rise to an oscillator system on a spherical curved space a…
The superintegrability of four Hamiltonians $\tilde{H_r} = λ\, H_r$, $r=a,b,c,d$, where $H_r$ are known Hamiltonians and $λ$ is a certain function defined on the configuration space and depending of a parameter $κ$, is studied. The new Hamiltonians, and the associated constants of motion $J_{ri}$, $i=1,2,3$, are continous functions of the parameter $κ$. The first part is concerned with separability and quadratic superintegrability (the integrals of motion are quadratic in the momenta) and the second part is devoted to the existence of higher-order superintegrability. The results obtained in th…
An infinite family of classical superintegrable Hamiltonians defined on the N-dimensional spherical, Euclidean and hyperbolic spaces are shown to have a common set of (2N-3) functionally independent constants of the motion. Among them, two different subsets of N integrals in involution (including the Hamiltonian) can always be explicitly identified. As particular cases, we recover in a straightforward way most of the superintegrability properties of the Smorodinsky-Winternitz and generalized Kepler-Coulomb systems on spaces of constant curvature and we introduce as well new classes of (quasi-m…
A known general class of superintegrable systems on 2D spaces of constant curvature can be defined by potentials separating in (geodesic) polar coordinates. The radial parts of these potentials correspond either to an isotropic harmonic oscillator or a generalised Kepler potential. The angular components, on the contrary, are given implicitly by a transcendental, in general, equation. In the present note, devoted to the previously less studied models with the radial potential of the generalised Kepler type, a new two-parameter family of relevant angular potentials is constructed in terms of el…
We prove the integrability and superintegrability of a family of natural Hamiltonians which includes and generalises those studied in some literature, originally defined on the 2D Minkowski space. Some of the new Hamiltonians are a perfect analogy of the well-known superintegrable system on the Euclidean plane proposed by Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz and they are defined on Minkowski space, as well as on all other 2D manifolds of constant curvature, Riemannian or pseudo-Riemannian. We show also how the application of the coupling-constant-metamorphosis technique allows us to obtain new superin…
The $N$-dimensional quantum Hamiltonian $ \hat{H} = -\frac{\hbar^2 {|\mathbf{q} } | }{2(η+| {\mathbf{q}} |)} {\mathbf{\nabla}}^2 - \frac{k}{η+ |{\mathbf{q}} |} $ is shown to be exactly solvable for any real positive value of the parameter $η$. Algebraically, this Hamiltonian system can be regarded as a new maximally superintegrable $η$-deformation of the $N$-dimensional Kepler-Coulomb Hamiltonian while, from a geometric viewpoint, this superintegrable Hamiltonian can be interpreted as a system on an $N$-dimensional Riemannian space with nonconstant curvature. The eigenvalues and eigenfunctions…
It is known that the fairly (most?) general class of 2D superintegrable systems defined on 2D spaces of constant curvature and separating in (geodesic) polar coordinates is specified by two types of radial potentials (oscillator or (generalized) Kepler ones) and by corresponding families of angular potentials. Unlike the radial potentials the angular ones are given implicitly (up to a function) by, in general, transcendental equation. In the present paper new two-parameter families of angular potentials are constructed in terms of elementary functions. It is shown that for an appropriate choic…
Construction and classification of 2D superintegrable systems (i.e. systems admitting, in addition to two global integrals of motion guaranteeing the Liouville integrability, the third global and independent one) defined on 2D spaces of constant curvature and separable in the so called geodesic polar coordinates are presented. The method proposed is applicable to any value of curvature including the case of Euclidean plane, the 2-sphere and the hyperbolic plane. The mathematic used is essentially "physical", in particular it refers to the very elegant technique of action-angle variables and pe…
We introduce a new family of Hamiltonians with a deformed Kepler- Coulomb potential dependent on an indexing parameter k. We show that this family is superintegrable for all rational k and compute the classical trajectories and quantum wave functions. We show that this system is related, via coupling constant metamorphosis, to a family of superintegrable deformations of the harmonic oscillator given by Tremblay, Turbiner and Winternitz. In doing so, we prove that all Hamiltonians with an oscillator term are related by coupling constant metamorphosis to systems with a Kepler-Coulomb term, both …
Phase Space is the framework best suited for quantizing superintegrable systems, naturally preserving the symmetry algebras of the respective hamiltonian invariants. The power and simplicity of the method is fully illustrated through new applications to nonlinear sigma models, specifically for de Sitter N-spheres and Chiral Models, where the symmetric quantum hamiltonians amount to compact and elegant expressions. Additional power and elegance is provided by the use of Nambu Brackets to incorporate the extra invariants of superintegrable models. Some new classical results are given for these b…
A quantum sl(2,R) coalgebra is shown to underly the construction of a large class of superintegrable potentials on 3D curved spaces, that include the non-constant curvature analogues of the spherical, hyperbolic and (anti-)de Sitter spaces. The connection and curvature tensors for these "deformed" spaces are fully studied by working on two different phase spaces. The former directly comes from a 3D symplectic realization of the deformed coalgebra, while the latter is obtained through a map leading to a spherical-type phase space. In this framework, the non-deformed limit is identified with the…
Almost all research on superintegrable potentials concerns spaces of constant curvature. In this paper we find by exhaustive calculation, all superintegrable potentials in the four Darboux spaces of revolution that have at least two integrals of motion quadratic in the momenta, in addition to the Hamiltonian. These are two-dimensional spaces of nonconstant curvature. It turns out that all of these potentials are equivalent to superintegrable potentials in complex Euclidean 2-space or on the complex 2-sphere, via "coupling constant metamorphosis" (or equivalently, via Staeckel multiplier transf…

Quadratic algebras are generalizations of Lie algebras; they include the symmetry algebras of 2nd order superintegrable systems in 2 dimensions as special cases. The superintegrable systems are exactly solvable physical systems in classical and quantum mechanics. For constant curvature spaces we show that the free quadratic algebras generated by the 1st and 2nd order elements in the enveloping algebras of their Euclidean and orthogonal symmetry algebras correspond one-to-one with the possible superintegrable systems with potential defined on these spaces. We describe a contraction theory for q…
Second-order conformal quantum superintegrable systems in 2 dimensions are Laplace equations on a manifold with an added scalar potential and $3$ independent 2nd order conformal symmetry operators. They encode all the information about 2D Helmholtz or time-independent Schrödinger superintegrable systems in an efficient manner: Each of these systems admits a quadratic symmetry algebra (not usually a Lie algebra) and is multiseparable. We study the separation equations for the systems as a family rather than separate cases. We show that the separation equations comprise all of the various types …
The maximal superintegrability of the intrinsic harmonic oscillator potential on N-dimensional spaces with constant curvature is revisited from the point of view of sl(2)-Poisson coalgebra symmetry. It is shown how this algebraic approach leads to a straightforward definition of a new large family of quasi-maximally superintegrable perturbations of the intrinsic oscillator on such spaces. Moreover, the generalization of this construction to those N-dimensional spaces with non-constant curvature that are endowed with sl(2)-coalgebra symmetry is presented. As the first examples of the latter cla…
The structure theory for the quadratic algebra generated by first and second order constants of the motion for 2D second order superintegrable systems with nondegenerate (3-parameter) and or 2-parameter potentials is well understood, but the results for the strictly 1-parameter case have been incomplete. Here we work out this structure theory and prove that the quadratic algebra generated by first and second order constants of the motion for systems with 4 second order constants of the motion must close at order three with the functional relationship between the 4 generators of order four. We …
A class of two-dimensional superintegrable systems on a constant curvature surface is considered as the natural generalization of some well known one-dimensional factorized systems. By using standard methods to find the shape-invariant intertwining operators we arrive at a $so(6)$ dynamical algebra and its Hamiltonian hierarchies. We pay attention to those associated to certain unitary irreducible representations that can be displayed by means of three-dimensional polyhedral lattices. We also discuss the role of superpotentials in this new context.
A Hamiltonian dynamics defined on the two-dimensional hyperbolic plane by coupling the Morse and Rosen-Morse potentials is analyzed. It is demonstrated that orbits of all bounded motions are closed iff the product of the parameter $\tilde a$ of the Morse potential and the square root of the absolute value of the curvature is a rational number. This property of trajectories equivalent to the maximal superintegrability is confirmed by explicit construction of polynomial superconstant of motion.
Two-dimensional quadratic algebras are generalizations of Lie algebras that include the symmetry algebras of 2nd order superintegrable systems in 2 dimensions as special cases. The superintegrable systems are exactly solvable physical systems in classical and quantum mechanics. Distinct superintegrable systems and their quadratic algebras can be related by geometric contractions, induced by Inönü-Wigner type Lie algebra contractions. These geometric contractions have important physical and geometric meanings, such as obtaining classical phenomena as limits of quantum phenomena as ${\hbar}\to 0…
The Lie-Poisson algebra so(N+1) and some of its contractions are used to construct a family of superintegrable Hamiltonians on the ND spherical, Euclidean, hyperbolic, Minkowskian and (anti-)de Sitter spaces. We firstly present a Hamiltonian which is a superposition of an arbitrary central potential with N arbitrary centrifugal terms. Such a system is quasi-maximally superintegrable since this is endowed with 2N-3 functionally independent constants of the motion (plus the Hamiltonian). Secondly, we identify two maximally superintegrable Hamiltonians by choosing a specific central potential and…
Superintegrable systems in two- and three-dimensional spaces of constant curvature have been extensively studied. From these, superintegrable systems in conformally flat spaces can be constructed by Staeckel transform. In this paper a method developed to establish the superintegrability of the Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz system in two dimensions is extended to higher dimensions and a superintegrable system on a non-conformally-flat four-dimensional space is found. In doing so, curvature corrections to the corresponding classical potential are found to be necessary. It is found that some subal…
In this paper we discuss maximal superintegrability of both classical and quantum Stäckel systems. We prove a sufficient condition for a flat or constant curvature Stäckel system to be maximally superintegrable. Further, we prove a sufficient condition for a Stäckel transform to preserve maximal superintegrability and we apply this condition to our class of Stäckel systems, which yields new maximally superintegrable systems as conformal deformations of the original systems. Further, we demonstrate how to perform the procedure of minimal quantization to considered systems in order to produce qu…
A family of classical superintegrable Hamiltonians, depending on an arbitrary radial function, which are defined on the 3D spherical, Euclidean and hyperbolic spaces as well as on the (2+1)D anti-de Sitter, Minkowskian and de Sitter spacetimes is constructed. Such systems admit three integrals of the motion (besides the Hamiltonian) which are explicitly given in terms of ambient and geodesic polar coordinates. The resulting expressions cover the six spaces in a unified way as these are parametrized by two contraction parameters that govern the curvature and the signature of the metric on each …
We classify the Hamiltonians $H=p_x^2+p_y^2+V(x,y)$ of all classical superintegrable systems in two dimensional complex Euclidean space with second-order constants of the motion. We similarly classify the superintegrable Hamiltonians $H=J_1^2+J_2^2+J_3^2+V(x,y,z)$ on the complex 2-sphere where $x^2+y^2+z^2=1$. This is achieved in all generality using properties of the complex Euclidean group and the complex orthogonal group.
An infinite family of ND spaces endowed with sl(2)-coalgebra symmetry is introduced. For all these spaces the geodesic flow is superintegrable, and the explicit form of their common set of integrals is obtained from the underlying sl(2)-coalgebra structure. In particular, ND spherically symmetric spaces with Euclidean signature are shown to be sl(2)-coalgebra spaces. As a byproduct of this construction we present ND generalizations of the classical Darboux surfaces, thus obtaining remarkable superintegrable ND spaces with non-constant curvature.
The N-dimensional generalization of Bertrand spaces as families of Maximally superintegrable systems on spaces with nonconstant curvature is analyzed. Considering the classification of two dimensional radial systems admitting 3 constants of the motion at most quadratic in the momenta, we will be able to generate a new class of spherically symmetric M.S. systems by using a technique based on coalgebra. The 3-dimensional realization of these systems provides the entire classification of classical spherically symmetric M.S. systems admitting periodic trajectories. We show that in dimension N > 2 …
The problem of description of superintegrable systems (i.e., systems with closed trajectories in a certain domain) in the class of rotationally symmetric natural mechanical systems goes back to Bertrand and Darboux. We describe all superintegrable (in a domain of slow motions) systems in the class of rotationally symmetric magnetic geodesic flows. We show that all sufficiently slow motions in a central magnetic field on a two-dimensional manifold of revolution are periodic if and only if the metric has a constant scalar curvature and the magnetic field is homogeneous, i.e. proportional to the …
The classical Smorodinsky-Winternitz systems on the ND sphere, Euclidean and hyperbolic spaces S^N, E^N and H^N are simultaneously approached starting from the Lie algebras so_k(N+1), which include a parametric dependence on the curvature k. General expressions for the Hamiltonian and its integrals of motion are given in terms of intrinsic geodesic coordinate systems. Each Lie algebra generator gives rise to an integral of motion, so that a set of N(N+1)/2 integrals is obtained. Furthermore, 2N-1 functionally independent ones are identified which, in turn, shows that the well known maximal sup…
We consider the classical superintegrable Hamiltonian system given by $H=T+U={p^2}/{2(1+λq^2)}+{ω^2 q^2}/{2(1+λq^2)}$, where U is known to be the "intrinsic" oscillator potential on the Darboux spaces of nonconstant curvature determined by the kinetic energy term T and parametrized by λ. We show that H is Stackel equivalent to the free Euclidean motion, a fact that directly provides a curved Fradkin tensor of constants of motion for H. Furthermore, we analyze in terms of λ the three different underlying manifolds whose geodesic motion is provided by T. As a consequence, we find that H comprise…
This paper has studied the three-dimensional Dunkl oscillator models in a generalization of superintegrable Euclidean Hamiltonian systems to curved ones. These models are defined based on curved Hamiltonians, which depend on a deformation parameter of underlying space and involve reflection operators. Their symmetries are obtained by the Jordan-Schwinger representations in the family of the Cayley-Klein orthogonal algebras using the creation and annihilation operators of the dynamical $sl_{-1}(2)$ algebra of the one-dimensional Dunkl oscillator. The resulting algebra is a deformation of $so_{κ…
The explicit solvability of quantum superintegrable systems is due to symmetry, but the symmetry is often "hidden". The symmetry generators of 2nd order superintegrable systems in 2 dimensions close under commutation to define quadratic algebras, a generalization of Lie algebras. Distinct systems on constant curvature spaces are related by geometric limits, induced by generalized Inönü-Wigner Lie algebra contractions of the symmetry algebras of the underlying spaces. These have physical/geometric implications, such as the Askey scheme for hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials. However, the lim…
The link between 3D spaces with (in general, non-constant) curvature and quantum deformations is presented. It is shown how the non-standard deformation of a sl(2) Poisson coalgebra generates a family of integrable Hamiltonians that represent geodesic motions on 3D manifolds with a non-constant curvature that turns out to be a function of the deformation parameter z. A different Hamiltonian defined on the same deformed coalgebra is also shown to generate a maximally superintegrable geodesic motion on 3D Riemannian and (2+1)D relativistic spaces whose sectional curvatures are all constant and e…
We consider one dimensional block cellular automata, where the local update rules are given by Yang-Baxter maps, which are set theoretical solutions of the Yang-Baxter equations. We show that such systems are superintegrable: they possess an exponentially large set of conserved local charges, such that the charge densities propagate ballistically on the chain. For these quantities we observe a complete absence of "operator spreading". In addition, the models can also have other local charges which are conserved only additively. We discuss concrete models up to local dimensions $N\le 4$, and sh…
Phase space is a framework ideally suited for quantizing superintegrable systems through the use of deformation methods, as illustrated here by applications to de Sitter and chiral particles. Within this framework, Nambu brackets elegantly incorporate the additional quantum invariants of such models. New results are presented for the non-Abelian quantization of these brackets.
A new integrable generalization to the 2D sphere $S^2$ and to the hyperbolic space $H^2$ of the 2D Euclidean anisotropic oscillator Hamiltonian with Rosochatius (centrifugal) terms is presented, and its curved integral of the motion is shown to be quadratic in the momenta. In order to construct such a new integrable Hamiltonian $H_κ$, we will make use of a group theoretical approach in which the curvature $κ$ of the underlying space will be treated as an additional (contraction) parameter, and we will make extensive use of projective coordinates and their associated phase spaces. It turns out …
In a recent paper the so-called Spectrum Generating Algebra (SGA) technique has been applied to the N-dimensional Taub-NUT system, a maximally superintegrable Hamiltonian system which can be interpreted as a one-parameter deformation of the Kepler-Coulomb system. Such a Hamiltonian is associated to a specific Bertrand space of non-constant curvature. The SGA procedure unveils the symmetry algebra underlying the Hamiltonian system and, moreover, enables one to solve the equations of motion. Here we will follow the same path to tackle the Darboux III system, another maximally superintegrable sys…
Classical (maximal) superintegrable systems in $n$ dimensions are Hamiltonian systems with $2n-1$ independent constants of the motion, globally defined, the maximum number possible. They are very special because they can be solved algebraically. In this paper we show explicitly, mostly through examples of 2nd order superintegrable systems in 2 dimensions, how the trajectories can be determined in detail using rather elementary algebraic, geometric and analytic methods applied to the closed quadratic algebra of symmetries of the system. We treat a family of 2nd order degenerate systems: oscilla…
A family of classical integrable systems defined on a deformation of the two-dimensional sphere, hyperbolic and (anti-)de Sitter spaces is constructed through Hamiltonians defined on the non-standard quantum deformation of a sl(2) Poisson coalgebra. All these spaces have a non-constant curvature that depends on the deformation parameter z. As particular cases, the analogues of the harmonic oscillator and Kepler--Coulomb potentials on such spaces are proposed. Another deformed Hamiltonian is also shown to provide superintegrable systems on the usual sphere, hyperbolic and (anti-)de Sitter space…
A Poisson coalgebra analogue of a (non-standard) quantum deformation of sl(2) is shown to generate an integrable geodesic dynamics on certain 2D spaces of non-constant curvature. Such a curvature depends on the quantum deformation parameter z and the flat case is recovered in the limit z\to 0. A superintegrable geodesic dynamics can also be defined in the same framework, and the corresponding spaces turn out to be either Riemannian or relativistic spacetimes (AdS and dS) with constant curvature equal to z. The underlying coalgebra symmetry of this approach ensures the existence of its generali…
We present a new exactly solvable (classical and quantum) model that can be interpreted as the generalization to the two-dimensional sphere and to the hyperbolic space of the two-dimensional anisotropic oscillator with any pair of frequencies $ω_x$ and $ω_y$. The new curved Hamiltonian ${H}_κ$ depends on the curvature $κ$ of the underlying space as a deformation/contraction parameter, and the Liouville integrability of ${H}_κ$ relies on its separability in terms of geodesic parallel coordinates, which generalize the Cartesian coordinates of the plane. Moreover, the system is shown to be superi…
The full spectrum and eigenfunctions of the quantum version of a nonlinear oscillator defined on an N-dimensional space with nonconstant curvature are rigorously found. Since the underlying curved space generates a position-dependent kinetic energy, three different quantization prescriptions are worked out by imposing that the maximal superintegrability of the system has to be preserved after quantization. The relationships among these three Schroedinger problems are described in detail through appropriate similarity transformations. These three approaches are used to illustrate different feat…
We review the fundamentals of coupling constant metamorphosis (CCM) and the Stäckel transform, and apply them to map integrable and superintegrable systems of all orders into other such systems on different manifolds. In general, CCM does not preserve the order of constants of the motion or even take polynomials in the momenta to polynomials in the momenta. We study specializations of these actions which do preserve polynomials and also the structure of the symmetry algebras in both the classical and quantum cases. We give several examples of non-constant curvature 3rd and 4th order superinteg…
The role of curvature in relation with Lie algebra contractions of the pseudo-ortogonal algebras so(p,q) is fully described by considering some associated symmetrical homogeneous spaces of constant curvature within a Cayley-Klein framework. We show that a given Lie algebra contraction can be interpreted geometrically as the zero-curvature limit of some underlying homogeneous space with constant curvature. In particular, we study in detail the contraction process for the three classical Riemannian spaces (spherical, Euclidean, hyperbolic), three non-relativistic (Newtonian) spacetimes and three…
A Hamiltonian with two degrees of freedom is said to be superintegrable if it admits three functionally independent integrals of the motion. This property has been extensively studied in the case of two-dimensional spaces of constant (possibly zero) curvature when all the independent integrals are either quadratic or linear in the canonical momenta. In this article the first steps are taken to solve the problem of superintegrability of this type on an arbitrary curved manifold in two dimensions. This is done by examining in detail one of the spaces of revolution found by G. Koenigs. We determi…
A novel family of exactly solvable quantum systems on curved space is presented. The family is the quantum version of the classical Perlick family, which comprises all maximally superintegrable 3-dimensional Hamiltonian systems with spherical symmetry. The high number of symmetries (both geometrical and dynamical) exhibited by the classical systems has a counterpart in the accidental degeneracy in the spectrum of the quantum systems. This family of quantum problem is completely solved with the techniques of the SUSYQM (supersymmetric quantum mechanics). We also analyze in detail the ordering p…
