The link between 3D spaces with (in general, non-constant) curvature and quantum deformations is presented. It is shown how the non-standard deformation of a sl(2) Poisson coalgebra generates a family of integrable Hamiltonians that represent geodesic motions on 3D manifolds with a non-constant curvature that turns out to be a function of the deformation parameter z. A different Hamiltonian defined on the same deformed coalgebra is also shown to generate a maximally superintegrable geodesic motion on 3D Riemannian and (2+1)D relativistic spaces whose sectional curvatures are all constant and equal to z. This approach can be generalized to arbitrary dimension.
The constant curvature analogue on the two-dimensional sphere and the hyperbolic space of the integrable Hénon-Heiles Hamiltonian $\mathcal{H}$ given by $$ \mathcal{H}=\dfrac{1}{2}(p_{1}^{2}+p_{2}^{2})+ Ω\left(q_{1}^{2}+ 4 q_{2}^{2}\right) +α\left(q_{1}^{2}q_{2}+2 q_{2}^{3}\right), $$ where $Ω$ and $α$ are real constants, is revisited. The resulting integrable curved Hamiltonian, $\mathcal{H}_κ$, depends on a parameter $κ$ which is just the curvature of the underlying space and allows one to recover $\mathcal{H}$ under the smooth flat/Euclidean limit $κ\to 0$. This system can be regarded as an…
This paper is a review of recent and classical results on integrable geodesic flows on Riemannian manifolds and topological obstructions to integrability. We also discuss some open problems.
This paper is a review of recent results on integrable nonholonomic geodesic flows of left--invariant metrics and left- and right--invariant constraint distributions on compact Lie groups.
We discuss the possible relationship between geodesic flow, integrability and supersymmetry, using fermionic extensions of the KdV equation, as well as the recently introduced supersymmetrisation of the Camassa-Holm equation, as illustrative examples.
Right-invariant geodesic flows on manifolds of Lie groups associated with 2-cocycles of corresponding Lie algebras are discussed. Algebra of integrals of motion for magnetic geodesic flows is considered and necessary and sufficient condition of integrability in quadratures is formulated. Canonic forms for 2-cocycles of all 4-dimensional Lie algebras are given and integrable cases among them are separated.
The factorisation method for Schrödinger operators with magnetic fields on a two-dimensional surface $M^2$ with non-trivial metric is investigated. This leads to the new integrable examples of such operators and brings a new look at some classical problems such as Dirac magnetic monopole and Landau problem. The global geometric aspects and related spectral properties of the operators from the factorisation chains are discussed in details. We also consider the Laplace transformations on a curved surface and extend the class of Schrödinger operators with two integrable levels introduced in the f…
It is shown that most, but not all, of the four dimensional metrics in the Multi-Centre family with integrable geodesic flow may be recognized as belonging to spatially homogeneous Bianchi type A metrics. We show that any diagonal bi-axial Bianchi II metric has an integrable geodesic flow, and that the simplest hyperkähler metric in this family displays a finite dimensional W-algebra for its observables. Our analysis puts also to light non-diagonal Bianchi VI$_0$ and VII$_0$ metrics which seem to be new. We conclude by showing that the elliptic coordinates advocated in the literature do not se…
We discuss canonical transformations relating well-known geodesic flows on the cotangent bundle of the sphere with a set of geodesic flows with quartic invariants. By adding various potentials to the corresponding geodesic Hamiltonians, we can construct new integrable systems on the sphere with quartic invariants.
We introduce the regularization Levi-Civita parameter for the `curved Kepler', i.e., motion under the `Kepler-Coulomb' potential in a configuration space with any constant curvature and metric of any signature type. Consistent use of this parameter allows to solve the problem of motion (orbit shape and time evolution along the orbit), thereby extending the use of the Levi-Civita parameter beyond the usual Kepler problem in a flat Euclidean configuration space. A `universal' description, where all relations are applicable to the motions in any space and with any energy follow from our approach,…
We construct a constant curvature analogue on the two-dimensional sphere ${\mathbf S}^2$ and the hyperbolic space ${\mathbf H}^2$ of the integrable Hénon-Heiles Hamiltonian $\mathcal{H}$ given by $$ \mathcal{H}=\dfrac{1}{2}(p_{1}^{2}+p_{2}^{2})+ Ω\left( q_{1}^{2}+ 4 q_{2}^{2}\right) +α\left( q_{1}^{2}q_{2}+2 q_{2}^{3}\right) , $$ where $Ω$ and $α$ are real constants. The curved integrable Hamiltonian $\mathcal{H}_κ$ so obtained depends on a parameter $κ$ which is just the curvature of the underlying space, and is such that the Euclidean Hénon-Heiles system $\mathcal{H}$ is smoothly obtained in…
We discuss the enumeration of planar graphs using bijections with suitably decorated trees, which allow for keeping track of the geodesic distances between faces of the graph. The corresponding generating functions obey non-linear recursion relations on the geodesic distance. These are solved by use of stationary multi-soliton tau-functions of suitable reductions of the KP hierarchy. We obtain a unified formulation of the (multi-) critical continuum limit describing large graphs with marked points at large geodesic distances, and obtain integrable differential equations for the corresponding s…
In this work we study the general system of geodesic equations for the case of a massive particle moving on an arbitrary curved manifold. The investigation is carried out from the symmetry perspective. By exploiting the parametrization invariance property of the system we define nonlocal conserved charges that are independent from the typical integrals of motion constructed out of possible Killing vectors/tensors of the background metric. We show that with their help every two dimensional surface can - at least in principle - be characterized as integrable. Due to the nonlocal nature of these …
Suppose we are given a compact Riemannian manifold (Q,g)with completely integrable geodesic flow. Let G be a compact connected Lie group acting freely on Q by isometries. The natural question arises: will the geodesic flow on Q/G equipped with the submersion metric be integrable? Under one natural assumption, we prove that the answer is affirmative. New examples of manifolds with completely integrable geodesic flows are obtained.
This paper shows that the left-invariant geodesic flow on the symplectic group relative to the Frobenius metric is an integrable system that is not contained in the Mishchenko-Fomenko class of rigid body metrics. This system may be expressed as a flow on symmetric matrices and is bi-Hamiltonian. This analysis is extended to cover flows on symmetric matrices when an isomorphism with the symplectic Lie algebra does not hold. The two Poisson structures associated with this system, including an analysis of its Casimirs, are completely analyzed. Since the system integrals are not generated by its C…
We characterize the complexity of geodesic paths on a curved statistical manifold M_{s} through the asymptotic computation of the information geometric complexity V_{M_{s}} and the Jacobi vector field intensity J_{M_{s}}. The manifold M_{s} is a 2l-dimensional Gaussian model reproduced by an appropriate embedding in a larger 4l-dimensional Gaussian manifold and endowed with a Fisher-Rao information metric g_{μν}(Θ) with non-trivial off diagonal terms. These terms emerge due to the presence of a correlational structure (embedding constraints) among the statistical variables on the larger manifo…

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the relationship between commutative and non-commutative integrability of Hamiltonian systems and to construct new examples of integrable geodesic flows on Riemannian manifolds. In particular, we prove that the geodesic flow of the bi-invariant metric on any bi-quotient of a compact Lie group is integrable in non-commutative sense by means of polynomial integrals, and therefore, in classical commutative sense by means of $C^\infty$--smooth integrals.
We consider nonholonomic geodesic flows of left-invariant metrics and left-invariant nonintegrable distributions on compact connected Lie groups. The equations of geodesic flows are reduced to the Euler-Poincare-Suslov equations on the corresponding Lie algebras. The Poisson and symplectic structures give raise to various algebraic constructions of the integrable Hamiltonian systems. On the other hand, nonholonomic systems are not Hamiltonian and the integration methods for nonholonomic systems are much less developed. In this paper, using chains of subalgebras, we give constructions that lead…
We describe a class of completely integrable $G$-invariant magnetic geodesic flows on (co)adjoint orbits of a compact connected Lie group $G$ with magnetic field given by the Kirillov-Konstant 2-form.
The Vlasov equation for the collisionless evolution of the single-particle probability distribution function (PDF) is a well-known Lie-Poisson Hamiltonian system. Remarkably, the operation of taking the moments of the Vlasov PDF preserves the Lie-Poisson structure. The individual particle motions correspond to singular solutions of the Vlasov equation. The paper focuses on singular solutions of the problem of geodesic motion of the Vlasov moments. These singular solutions recover geodesic motion of the individual particles.
This paper defines a class of variational problems on Lie groups that admit involutive automorphisms. The maximum Principle of optimal control then identifies the appropriate left invariant Hamiltonians on the Lie algebra of the group. The corresponding Hamiltonian equations admit a spectral representation with important applications to the theory of integrable systems. Particular cases make a link to Moser's work relating the solutions of Kepler's problem to the geodesics on spaces of constant curvature, Newmann's mechanical problem on the sphere and related geodesic problem of Jacobi on an e…
In this paper we return to the subject of Jacobi metrics for timelike and null geodsics in stationary spactimes, correcting some previous misconceptions. We show that not only null geodesics, but also timelike geodesics are governed by a Jacobi-Maupertuis type variational principle and a Randers-Finsler metric for which we give explicit formulae. The cases of the Taub-NUT and Kerr spacetimes are discussed in detail. Finally we show how our Jacobi-Maupertuis Randers-Finsler metric may be expressed in terms of the effective medium describing the behaviour of Maxwell's equations in the curved spa…
We study invariant Nijenhuis $(1,1)$-tensors on a homogeneous space $G/K$ of a reductive Lie group $G$ from the point of view of integrability of a Hamiltonian system of differential equations with the $G$-invariant Hamiltonian function on the cotangent bundle $T^*(G/K)$. Such a tensor induces an invariant Poisson tensor $Π_1$ on $T^*(G/K)$, which is Poisson compatible with the canonical Poisson tensor $Π_{T^*(G/K)}$. This Poisson pair can be reduced to the space of $G$-invariant functions on $T^*(G/K)$ and produces a family of Poisson commuting $G$-invariant functions. We give, in Lie algebra…
Finding the fastest path to a desired destination is a vitally important task for microorganisms moving in a fluid flow. We study this problem by building an analytical formalism for overdamped microswimmers on curved manifolds and arbitrary flows. We show that the solution corresponds to the geodesics of a Randers metric, which is an asymmetric Finsler metric that reflects the irreversible character of the problem. Using the example of a spherical surface, we demonstrate that the swimmer performance that follows this "Randers policy" always beats a more direct policy. A study of the shape of …
We provide a class of orbits in the curved N-body problem for which no point that could play the role of the centre of mass is fixed or moves uniformly along a geodesic. This proves that the equations of motion lack centre-of-mass and linear-momentum integrals.
Entropic Dynamics (ED) is a theoretical framework developed to investigate the possibility that laws of physics reflect laws of inference rather than laws of nature. In this work, a RED (Reversible Entropic Dynamics) model is considered. The geometric structure underlying the curved statistical manifold, M is studied. The trajectories of this particular model are hyperbolic curves (geodesics) on M. Finally, some analysis concerning the stability of these geodesics on M is carried out.
