This paper studies the topological entropy of real-analytic Liouville integrable Hamiltonian systems. We prove that the Hamiltonian flow on a compact connected regular energy hypersurface has zero topological entropy whenever a complete family of commuting real-analytic first integrals is generically independent in a connected neighborhood of that hypersurface. The proof uses finite normal expansions along minimal analytic carriers and an ergodic version of Ziglin's leading-term argument to obtain independent invariant normal polynomials, whose Poisson geometry makes all tangent Lyapunov exponents of the carriers vanish.
In particular, we prove that a real-analytic Liouville integrable geodesic flow on a closed real-analytic Riemannian manifold has zero topological entropy, giving a positive answer to the conjecture proposed by Paternain in 1992.
The classical Arnold-Liouville theorem describes the geometry of an integrable Hamiltonian system near a regular level set of the moment map. Our results describe it near a nondegenerate singular level set: a tubular neighborhood of a connected singular nondegenerate level set, after a normal finite covering, admits a non-complete system of action-angle functions (the number of action functions is equal to the rank of the moment map), and it can be decomposed topologically, together with the associated singular Lagrangian foliation, to a direct product of simplest (codimension 1 and codimensio…
For integrable Hamiltonian systems with two degrees of freedom whose Hamiltonian vector fields have incomplete flows, an analogue of the Liouville theorem is established. A canonical Liouville fibration is defined by means of an "exact" 2-parameter family of flat polygons equipped with certain pairing of sides. For the integrable Hamiltonian systems given by the vector field $v=(-\partial f/\partial w, \partial f/\partial z)$ on ${\mathbb C}^2$ where $f=f(z,w)$ is a complex polynomial in 2 variables, geometric properties of Liouville fibrations are described.
We associate cotangent models to a neighbourhood of a Liouville torus in symplectic and Poisson manifolds focusing on a special class called $b$-Poisson/$b$-symplectic manifolds. The semilocal equivalence with such models uses the corresponding action-angle coordinate theorems in these settings: the theorem of Liouville-Mineur-Arnold [A74] for symplectic manifolds and an action-angle theorem for regular Liouville tori in Poisson manifolds [LMV11]. Our models comprise regular Liouville tori of Poisson manifolds but also consider the Liouville tori on the singular locus of a $b$-Poisson manifold…
In this paper, we study the topology of the Liouville foliation of an analogue of the Kovalevskaya integrable case on the Lie algebra so(3; 1). The Fomenko-Zieschang invariants (i.e., marked molecules) of a given foliation on each regular isoenergy surface were calculated.
Topology of Liouville foliations for an analogue of the Kovalevskaya integrable case on Lie algebra so(4) is discussed. Fomenko-Zieschang invariants (i.e. marked molecules) were calculated for these foliations on every regular isoenergy submanifold. The corresponding stratification of the three-dimensional space of parameters of these manifolds is described in details.
A billiard is a dynamical system in which a particle alternates between motion in a straight line and specular reflection from a boundary. For billiards in non-convex areas bounded by segments of confocal quadrics are studied. The topology of 3-dimmensional bifurcations of Liouville foliations is described.
This paper is a review of recent and classical results on integrable geodesic flows on Riemannian manifolds and topological obstructions to integrability. We also discuss some open problems.
This paper is a review of recent results on integrable nonholonomic geodesic flows of left--invariant metrics and left- and right--invariant constraint distributions on compact Lie groups.
Suppose we are given a compact Riemannian manifold (Q,g)with completely integrable geodesic flow. Let G be a compact connected Lie group acting freely on Q by isometries. The natural question arises: will the geodesic flow on Q/G equipped with the submersion metric be integrable? Under one natural assumption, we prove that the answer is affirmative. New examples of manifolds with completely integrable geodesic flows are obtained.
We completely integrate the magnetic geodesic flow on a flat two-torus with the magnetic field $F = \cos (x) dx \wedge dy$ and describe all contractible periodic magnetic geodesics. It is shown that there are no such geodesics for energy $E \geq 1/2$, for $E< 1/2$ simple periodic magnetic geodesics form two $S^1$-families for which the (fixed energy) action functional is positive and therefore there are no periodic magnetic geodesics for which the action functional is negative.
We discuss canonical transformations relating well-known geodesic flows on the cotangent bundle of the sphere with a set of geodesic flows with quartic invariants. By adding various potentials to the corresponding geodesic Hamiltonians, we can construct new integrable systems on the sphere with quartic invariants.
We present a geometric interpretation of integrability of geodesic flow by quadratic integrals in terms of the web theory and construct integrable billiards on surfaces admitting such integrals.
In this survey article we gather classical as well as recent results on minimal geodesics of Riemannian or Finsler metrics, giving special attention to the two-dimensional case. Moreover, we present open problems together with some first ideas as to the solutions.
We construct Riemannian manifolds with completely integrable geodesic flows, in particular various nonhomogeneous examples. The methods employed are a modification of Thimm's method, Riemannian submersions and connected sums.
By studying completely integrable torus actions on contact manifolds we prove a conjecture of Toth and Zelditch that toric integrable geodesic flows on tori must have flat metrics.
We present a new Liouville-integrable natural Hamiltonian system on the (cotangent bundle of the) two-dimensional sphere. The second integral is cubic in the momenta.
We explicitely construct an example of an analytic metric on $T^2$ which is non-separable but it is locally integrable on an energy surface. The construction is based on a KAM-like approach and a careful control on what happens on the energy surface.
We propose a new condition $\aleph$ which enables to get new results on integrable geodesic flows on closed surfaces. This paper has two parts. In the first, we strengthen Kozlov's theorem on non-integrability on surfaces of higher genus. In the second, we study integrable geodesic flows on 2-torus. Our main result for 2-torus describes the phase portraits of integrable flows. We prove that they are essentially standard outside, what we call, separatrix chains. The complement to the union of the separatrix chains is $C^0$-foliated by invariant sections of the bundle.
In the paper we discuss Fomenko conjecture on realization of topology of topology of Liouville foliaions of smooth and real-analytic integrable Hamiltonian systems by integrable billiards. Vedyushkina-Kharcheva algorithm of 3-atom realization by billiard books is described clearly in the terms of $f$-graphs. Note, that an arbitrary type of base of Liouville foliation on the whole isoenergy surface was also realized by V. Vedyushkina and I. Kharcheva algorithm. In this paper this algorithm is visually applied to realization of a well-known Zhukovskii integrable system (Euler system with a gyros…
For any toric automorphism with only real eigenvalues a Riemannian metric with an integrable geodesic flow on the suspension of this automorphism is constructed. A qualitative analysis of such a flow on a three-solvmanifold constructed by the authors in math.DG/9905078 is done. This flow is an example of the geodesic flow, which has vanishing Liouville entropy and, moreover, is integrable but has positive topological entropy. The authors also discuss some open problems on integrability of geodesic flows and related subjects.
Let (M,ω) be a symplectic 2n-manifold and h_1,...,h_n be functionally independent commuting functions on M. We present a geometric criterion for a singular point P\in M (i.e. such that {dh_i(P)}_{i=1}^n are linearly dependent) to be non-degenerate in the sence of Vey-Eliasson. Then we apply Fomenko's theory to study the neighborhood U of the singular Liouville fiber containing saddle-saddle singularities of the Manakov top. Namely, we describe the singular Liouville foliation on U and the `Bohr-Sommerfeld' lattices on the momentum map image of U. A relation with the quantum Manakov top studied…
In this paper the magnetic geodesic flow on a 2-torus is considered. We study a semi-hamiltonian quasi-linear PDEs which is equivalent to the existence of polynomial in momenta first integral of magnetic geodesic flow on fixed energy level. It is known that diagonal metric associated with this system is Egorov one if degree of the first integral is equal to 2 or 3. In this paper we prove this fact in the case of existence of the first integral of any degree.
Motivated by a paper of Bolsinov and Taimanov DG/9911193 we consider non-holonomic situation and exhibit examples of sub-Riemannian metrics with integrable geodesic flows and positive topological entropy. Moreover the Riemannian examples are obtained as "holonomization" of sub-Riemannian ones. A feature of non-holonomic situation is non-compactness of the phase space. We also exhibit a Liouvulle-integrable Hamiltonian system with topological entropy of all integrals positive.
A detailed description of topology of integrable billiard systems is given. For elliptical billiards and geodesic billiards on ellipsoid, the corresponding Fomenko graphs are constructed.
In this paper we study the integrability of the Hamiltonian system associated to the fourth Painlevé equation. We prove that one two parametric family of this Hamiltonian system is not integrable in the sense of the Liouville-Arnold theorem. Computing explicitly the Stokes matrices and the formal invariants of the second variational equations we deduce that the connected component of the unit element of the corresponding Galois grou is not Abelian. Thus the Morales-Ramis-Simó theory leads to a non-integrable result. Moreover, combining the new result with our previous one we establish that for…
For a compact riemannian manifold of negative curvature, the geodesic foliation of its unit tangent bundle is independent of the negatively curved metric, up to Holder bicontinuous homeomorphism. However, the riemannian metric defines a natural transverse measure to this foliation, the Liouville transverse measure, which does depend on the metric. For a surface S, we show that the map which to a hyperbolic metric on S associates its Liouville transverse measure is differentiable, in an appropriate sense. Its tangent map is valued in the space of transverse Holder distributions for the geodesic…
We study the magnetic geodesic flows on 2-surfaces having an additional first integral which is independent of the Hamiltonian at a fixed energy level. The following two cases are considered: when there exists a quadratic in momenta integral, and also the case of a rational in momenta integral with a linear numerator and denominator. In both cases certain semi-Hamiltonian systems of PDEs appear. In this paper we construct exact solutions (generally speaking, local ones) to these systems: in the first case via the generalized hodograph method, in the second case via the Legendre transformation …
By a classical result of Darboux, a foliation of a Riemannian surface has the Graves property (also known as the strong evolution property) if and only if the foliation comes from a Liouville net. A similar result of Blaschke says that a pair of orthogonal foliations has the Ivory property if and only if they form a Liouville net. Let us say that a geodesically convex curve on a Riemannian surface has the Poritsky property if it can be parametrized in such a way that all of its string diffeomorphisms are shifts with respect to this parameter. In 1950, Poritsky has shown that the only closed pl…
We show that given any Liouville direction and flat Finsler torus, one can make a $C^{\infty}$-small perturbation on an arbitrarily small disc to get a nondense geodesic in the given direction.
Carnot groups are subRiemannian manifolds. As such they admit geodesic flows, which are left-invariant Hamiltonian flows on their cotangent bundles. Some of these flows are integrable. Some are not. The space of k-jets for real-valued functions on the real line forms a Carnot group of dimension $k+2$. We show that its geodesic flow is integrable and that its geodesics generalize Euler's elastica, with the case $k=2$ corresponding to the elastica, as shown by Sachkov and Ardentov.
The only one example has been known of magnetic geodesic flow on the 2-torus which has a polynomial in momenta integral independent of the Hamiltonian. In this example the integral is linear in momenta and corresponds to a one parametric group preserving the Lagrangian function of the magnetic flow. In this paper the problem of integrability on one energy level is considered. This problem can be reduced to a remarkable Semi-hamiltonian system of quasi-linear PDEs and to the question of existence of smooth periodic solutions for this system. Our main result states that the pair of Liouville met…

Let (Σ, g) be a compact $C^2$ finslerian 3-manifold. If the geodesic flow of g is completely integrable, and the singular set is a tamely-embedded polyhedron, then $π_1(Σ)$ is almost polycyclic. On the other hand, if Σ is a compact, irreducible 3-manifold and $π_1(Σ)$ is infinite polycyclic while $π_2(Σ)$ is trivial, then Σ admits an analytic riemannian metric whose geodesic flow is completely integrable and singular set is a real-analytic variety. Additional results in higher dimensions are proven.
The notion of a Radon transform is introduced for completely integrable billiard tables. In the case of Liouville billiard tables of dimension 3 we prove that the Radon transform is one-to-one on the space of continuous functions $K$ on the boundary which are invariant with respect to the corresponding group of symmetries. We prove also that the frequency map associated with a class of Liouville billiard tables is non-degenerate. This allows us to obtain spectral rigidity of the corresponding Laplace-Beltrami operator with Robin boundary conditions.
