In the paper we discuss Fomenko conjecture on realization of topology of topology of Liouville foliaions of smooth and real-analytic integrable Hamiltonian systems by integrable billiards. Vedyushkina-Kharcheva algorithm of 3-atom realization by billiard books is described clearly in the terms of $f$-graphs. Note, that an arbitrary type of base of Liouville foliation on the whole isoenergy surface was also realized by V. Vedyushkina and I. Kharcheva algorithm. In this paper this algorithm is visually applied to realization of a well-known Zhukovskii integrable system (Euler system with a gyrostat) in a certain energy zone. It turns out that Liouville foliation is also realized using this construction, not only the class of its base. Thus, Liouville equivalence of these billiard and mechanical systems is shown. Then we discuss V. Kibkalo and V. Vedyushkina result on constructing of a billiard with an arbitrary numerical invariant. Existence of Fomenko-Zieschang invariant is proved for some subclass of billiard books without potential. Also, it is proved that such systems are topologically stable. In the end of the paper we show that planar billiard system in some potential field can have a non-degenerate rank 1 4-singularity singularity not satisfying non-splitting condition.

The aim of this work is to put together two novel concepts from the theory of integrable billiards: billiard ordered games and confocal billiard books. Billiard books appeared recently in the work of Fomenko's school, in particular of V. Vedyushkina. These more complex billiard domains are obtained by gluing planar sets bounded by arcs of confocal conics along common edges. Such domains are used in this paper to construct the configuration space for billiard ordered games. We analyse dynamical and topological properties of the systems obtained in that way.
Systems of particle motion in the Hooke central potential field on a billiard book glued from flat circular billiard domains are considered. An important class of nondegenerate focal singularities of the rank 0 of integrable systems with 2 degrees of freedom is completely realized by this class of billiards. Namely, for each semi-local focal singularity the constructed billiard system has a singularity fiberwise homeomorphic to the given one.
In this paper, we show that any smooth one-parameter deformations of a strictly convex integrable billiard table $Ω_0$ preserving the integrability near the boundary have to be tangent to a finite dimensional space passing through $Ω_0$.
In this paper, we use the projective dynamical approach to integrable mechanical billiards as in [Zhao, 2021] to establish the integrability of natural mechanical billiards with the Lagrange problem, which is the superposition of two Kepler problems and a Hooke problem, with the Hooke center at the middle of the Kepler centers, as the underlying mechanical systems, and with any combinations of confocal conic sections with foci at the Kepler centers as the reflection wall, in the plane, on the sphere, and in the hyperbolic plane. This covers many previously known integrable mechanical billiards…
A billiard is a dynamical system in which a particle alternates between motion in a straight line and specular reflection from a boundary. For billiards in non-convex areas bounded by segments of confocal quadrics are studied. The topology of 3-dimmensional bifurcations of Liouville foliations is described.
We present a geometric interpretation of integrability of geodesic flow by quadratic integrals in terms of the web theory and construct integrable billiards on surfaces admitting such integrals.
We consider a multi-dimensional billiard system in an (n+1)-dimensional Euclidean space, the direct product of the "horizontal" hyperplane and the "vertical" line. The hypersurface that determines the system is assumed to be smooth and symmetric in all coordinate hyperplanes. Hence there exists a periodic orbit $γ$ of period 2 moving along the "vertical" coordinate axis. The question we ask is as follows. Is it possible to choose such a system to have the dynamics locally (near $γ$) conjugated to the dynamics of a linear map? Since the problem is local, the billiard hypersurface can be determi…
In this article we explain that several integrable mechanical billiards in the plane are connected via conformal transformations. We first remark that the free billiard in the plane are conformal equivalent to infinitely many billiard systems defined in central force problems on a particular fixed energy level. We then explain that the classical Hooke-Kepler correspondence can be carried over to a correspondence between integrable Hooke-Kepler billiards. As part of the conclusion we show that any focused conic section gives rise to integrable Kepler billiards, which brings generalizations to a…
We present a solution of the algebraic version of Birkhoff Conjecture on integrable billiards. Namely we show that every polynomially integrable real bounded convex planar billiard with smooth boundary is an ellipse. We extend this result to billiards with piecewise-smooth and not necessarily convex boundary on arbitrary two-dimensional surface of constant curvature: plane, sphere, Lobachevsky (hyperbolic) plane; each of them being modeled as a plane or a (pseudo-) sphere in $\mathbb R^3$ equipped with appropriate quadratic form. Namely, we show that a billiard is polynomially integrable, if a…
We consider billiard ball motion in a convex domain of a constant curvature surface influenced by the constant magnetic field. We prove that if the billiard map is totally integrable then the boundary curve is necessarily a circle. This result is a manifestation of the so-called Hopf rigidity phenomenon which was recently obtained for classical billiards on constant curvature surfaces.
We introduce a method to find differential equations for functions which define tables, such that associated billiard systems admit a local first integral. We illustrate this method in three situations: the case of (locally) integrable wire billiards, for finding surfaces in ${\mathbb R}^3$ with a first integral of degree one in velocities, and for finding a piece-wise smooth surface in ${\mathbb R}^3$ homeomorphic to a torus, being a table of an integrable billiard.
The aim of this note is to explain the integrability of an integrable Boltzmann billiard model, previously established by Gallavotti and Jauslin in arXiv:2008.01955, alternatively via the viewpoint of projective dynamics. The additional first integral is shown to be related to the energy of a corresponding system on a hemisphere. We show that this viewpoint applies to certain other billiard models in the plane defined through Kepler-Coulomb problems as well. The approach also leads to a family of integrable billiard models on the sphere defined through the spherical Kepler-Coulomb problem.
A caustic of a strictly convex planar bounded billiard is a smooth curve whose tangent lines are reflected from the billiard boundary to its tangent lines. The famous Birkhoff Conjecture states that if the billiard boundary has an inner neighborhood foliated by closed caustics, then the billiard is an ellipse. It was studied by many mathematicians, including H.Poritsky, M.Bialy, S.Bolotin, A.Mironov, V.Kaloshin, A.Sorrentino and others. In the paper we study its following generalized dual version stated by S.Tabachnikov. Consider a closed smooth strictly convex curve $γ\subset\mathbb{RP}^2$ eq…
In this article, we consider mechanical billiard systems defined with Lagrange's integrable extension of Euler's two-center problems in the Euclidean space, on the sphere, and in the hyperbolic space of arbitrary dimension $n \ge 3$. In the three-dimensional Euclidean space, we show that the billiard systems with any finite combination of quadrics having two foci at the Kepler centers are integrable. The same holds for the projections of these systems on the three-dimensional sphere and the hyperbolic space by means of central projection. With the same approach, we also extend these results to…
The billiard systems within quadrics, playing the role of discrete analogues of geodesics on ellipsoids, are incorporated into the theory of integrable quad-graphs. An initial observation is that the Six-pointed star theorem, as the operational consistency for the billiard algebra, is equivalent to an integrabilty condition of a line congruence. A new notion of the double-reflection nets as a subclass of dual Darboux nets associated with pencils of quadrics is introduced, basic properies and several examples are presented. Corresponding Yang-Baxter maps, associated with pencils of quadrics are…
We introduce a new class of billiard systems in the plane, with boundaries formed by finitely many arcs of confocal conics such that they contain some reflex angles. Fundamental dynamical, topological, geometric, and arithmetic properties of such billiards are studied. The novelty, caused by reflex angles on boundary, induces invariant leaves of higher genera and dynamical behaviour different from Liouville-Arnold's theorem. Its analogue is derived from the Maier theorem on measured foliations. A local version of Poncelet theorem is formulated and necessary algebro-geometric conditions for per…
We consider billiard systems within compact domains bounded by confocal conics on a hyperboloid of one sheet in the Minkowski space. We derive conditions for elliptic periodicity for such billiards. We describe the topology of those billiard systems in terms of Fomenko invariants. We provide then periodicity conditions in terms of functional Pell equations and related extremal polynomials. Several examples are computed in terms of elliptic functions and classical Chebyshev and Zolotarev polynomials, as extremal polynomials over one or two intervals. These results are contrasted with the cases …
In an ordinary billiard system trajectories of a Hamiltonian system are elastically reflected after a collision with a hypersurface (scatterer). If the scatterer is a submanifold of codimension more than one, we say that the billiard is degenerate. Then collisions are rare. We study trajectories of degenerate billiards which have an infinite number of collisions with the scatterer. Degenerate billiards appear as limits of systems with elastic reflections or as limits of systems with singularities in celestial mechanics. We prove the existence of trajectories of such systems shadowing trajector…
We introduce a new discrete system that arises from ellipsoidal billiards and is closely related to the double reflection nets. The system is defined on the lattice of a uniform honeycomb consisting of rectified hypercubes and cross polytopes. In the $2$-dimensional case, the lattice is regular and it incorporates dynamics both in the original space and its dual. In the $3$-dimensional case, the lattice consists of tetrahedra and cuboctahedra.
A detailed description of topology of integrable billiard systems is given. For elliptical billiards and geodesic billiards on ellipsoid, the corresponding Fomenko graphs are constructed.
We consider billiard ball motion in a convex domain of the Euclidean plane bounded by a piece-wise smooth curve influenced by the constant magnetic field. We show that if there exists a polynomial in velocities integral of the magnetic billiard flow then every smooth piece $γ$ of the boundary must be algebraic and either is a circle or satisfies very strong restrictions. In particular in the case of ellipse it follows that magnetic billiard is algebraically not integrable for all magnitudes of the magnetic field. We conjecture that circle is the only integrable magnetic billiard not only in th…
In this paper we give a short survey of recent results on algebraic version of the Birkhoff conjecture for integrable billiards on surfaces of constant curvature. We also discuss integrable magnetic billiards. As a new application of the algebraic technique we study the existence of polynomial integrals for the two-sided magnetic billiards introduced by Kozlov and Polikarpov.
Particle motion in a smoothly oscillating non-integrable billiard is known to result in unbounded energy growth. Though the asymptotic energy growth rate of an ensemble of particles in an oscillating chaotic billiard is known to be quadratic, there are no estimates available for smoothly oscillating pseudo-integrable billiards. The energy growth rate in such systems is so slow that it is very hard to predict the asymptotic rates from finite time computations. In this paper, a method is proposed to estimate the asymptotic energy growth rate in a system by using short-time data. The idea is appl…
Introducing the rotor interaction in the integrable system of the annulus billiard produces a variety of dynamical phenomena, from integrability to ergodicity.
The classical Birkhoff conjecture claims that the boundary of a strictly convex integrable billiard table is necessarily an ellipse (or a circle as a special case). In this article we prove a complete local version of this conjecture: a small integrable perturbation of an ellipse must be an ellipse. This extends and completes the result in [3], where nearly circular domains were considered. One of the crucial ideas in the proof is to extend action-angle coordinates for elliptic billiards into complex domains (with respect to the angle), and to thoroughly analyze the nature of their complex sin…
A class of Hamiltonian impact systems exhibiting smooth near integrable behavior is presented. The underlying unperturbed model investigated is an integrable, separable, 2 degrees of freedom mechanical impact system with effectively bounded energy level sets and a single straight wall which preserves the separable structure. Singularities in the system appear either as trajectories with tangent impacts or as singularities in the underlying Hamiltonian structure (e.g. separatrices). It is shown that away from these singularities, a small perturbation from the integrable structure results in smo…

By a classical result of Darboux, a foliation of a Riemannian surface has the Graves property (also known as the strong evolution property) if and only if the foliation comes from a Liouville net. A similar result of Blaschke says that a pair of orthogonal foliations has the Ivory property if and only if they form a Liouville net. Let us say that a geodesically convex curve on a Riemannian surface has the Poritsky property if it can be parametrized in such a way that all of its string diffeomorphisms are shifts with respect to this parameter. In 1950, Poritsky has shown that the only closed pl…
The notion of a Radon transform is introduced for completely integrable billiard tables. In the case of Liouville billiard tables of dimension 3 we prove that the Radon transform is one-to-one on the space of continuous functions $K$ on the boundary which are invariant with respect to the corresponding group of symmetries. We prove also that the frequency map associated with a class of Liouville billiard tables is non-degenerate. This allows us to obtain spectral rigidity of the corresponding Laplace-Beltrami operator with Robin boundary conditions.
In this paper we prove results on Birkhoff and Oseledets genericity along certain curves in the space of affine lattices and in moduli spaces of translation surfaces. We also prove applications of these results to dynamical billiards, mathematical physics and number theory. In the space of affine lattices $ASL_2(\mathbb{R})/ASL_2( \mathbb{Z})$, we prove that almost every point on a curve with some non-degeneracy assumptions is Birkhoff generic for the geodesic flow. This implies almost everywhere genericity for some curves in the locus of branched covers of the torus inside the stratum $\mathc…
We consider algebraic geometrical properties of the integrable billiard on a quadric Q with elastic impacts along another quadric confocal to Q. These properties are in sharp contrast with those of the ellipsoidal Birkhoff billiards. Namely, generic complex invariant manifolds are not Abelian varieties, and the billiard map is no more algebraic. A Poncelet-like theorem for such system is known. We give explicit sufficient conditions both for closed geodesics and periodic billiard orbits on Q and discuss their relation with the elliptic KdV solutions and elliptic Calogero system
In a Hamiltonian system with impacts (or "billiard with potential"), a point particle moves about the interior of a bounded domain according to a background potential, and undergoes elastic collisions at the boundaries. When the background potential is identically zero, this is the hard-wall billiard model. Previous results on smooth billiard models (where the hard-wall boundary is replaced by a steep smooth billiard-like potential) have clarified how the approximation of a smooth billiard with a hard-wall billiard may be utilized rigorously. These results are extended here to models with smoo…
The billiard motion inside an ellipsoid $Q \subset \Rset^{n+1}$ is completely integrable. Its phase space is a symplectic manifold of dimension $2n$, which is mostly foliated with Liouville tori of dimension $n$. The motion on each Liouville torus becomes just a parallel translation with some frequency $ω$ that varies with the torus. Besides, any billiard trajectory inside $Q$ is tangent to $n$ caustics $Q_{λ_1},...,Q_{λ_n}$, so the caustic parameters $λ=(λ_1,...,λ_n)$ are integrals of the billiard map. The frequency map $λ\mapsto ω$ is a key tool to understand the structure of periodic billia…
