We review the construction of the Dirac operator and its properties in Riemannian geometry and show how the asymptotic expansion of the trace of the heat kernel determines the spectral invariants of the Dirac operator and its index. We also point out that the Einstein-Hilbert functional can be obtained as a linear combination of the first two spectral invariants of the Dirac operator. Next, we report on our previous attempts to generalize the notion of the Dirac operator to the case of Matrix Geometry, when instead of a Riemannian metric there is a matrix valued self-adjoint symmetric two-tensor that plays a role of a ``non-commutative'' metric. We construct invariant first-order and second-order self-adjoint elliptic partial differential operators, that can be called ``non-commutative'' Dirac operator and non-commutative Laplace operator. We construct the corresponding heat kernel for the non-commutative Laplace type operator and compute its first two spectral invariants. A linear combination of these two spectral invariants gives a functional that can be considered as a non-commutative generalization of the Einstein-Hilbert action.
We consider the massive Dirac equation in the exterior region of the 5-dimensional Myers-Perry black hole. Using the resulting ODEs obtained from the separation of variables of the Dirac equation, we construct an integral spectral representation for the solution of the Cauchy problem with compactly supported smooth initial data. We then prove that the probability of presence of a Dirac particle to be in any compact region of space decays to zero as $t\to\infty$, in analogy with the case of the Dirac operator in the Kerr-Newman geometry.
The purpose of this paper is to formulate the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action in a framework of generalized geometry and clarify its symmetry. A D-brane is defined as a Dirac structure where scalar fields and gauge field are treated on an equal footing in a static gauge. We derive generalized Lie derivatives corresponding to the diffeomorphism and B-field gauge transformations and show that the DBI action is invariant under non-linearly realized symmetries for all types of diffeomorphisms and B-field gauge transformations. Consequently, we can interpret not only the scalar field but also the ga…
We isolate and study the transformation of the intrinsic spin of Dirac particles as they propagate along timelike geodesics in Kerr geometry. Reference frames play a crucial role in the definition and measurement of the intrinsic spin of test particles. We show how observers located in the outer geometry of Kerr black holes may exploit the symmetries of the geometry to set up reference frames using purely geometric, locally-available information. Armed with these geometrically-defined reference frames, we obtain a closed-form expression for the geometrically-induced spin precession of Dirac pa…
A sketch of an approach towards Lorentzian spectral geometry (based on joint work with Mario Paschke) is described, together with a general way to define abstractly the quantized Dirac field on such Lorentzian spectral geometries. Moyal-Minkowski spacetime serves as an example. The scattering of the quantized Dirac field by a non-commutative (Moyal-deformed) action of an external scalar potential is investigated. It is shown that differentiating the S-matrix with respect to the strength of the scattering potential gives rise to quantum field operators depending on elements of the non-commutati…
We propose an ansatz for the commutative canonical spin_c Dirac operator on CP^2 in a global geometric approach using the right invariant (left action-) induced vector fields from SU(3). This ansatz is suitable for noncommutative generalisation within the framework of fuzzy geometry. Along the way we identify the physical spinors and construct the canonical spin_c bundle in this formulation. The chirality operator is also given in two equivalent forms. Finally, using representation theory we obtain the eigenspinors and calculate the full spectrum. We use an argument from the fuzzy complex proj…
We show that the exterior algebra bundle over a curved spacetime can be used as framework in which both the Dirac and the Einstein equations can be obtained. These equations and their coupling follow from the variational principle applied to a Lagrangian constructed from natural geometric invariants. We also briefly indicate how other forces can potentially be incorporated within this geometric framework.
We consider Dirac equations on even dimensional Lorentzian manifolds of bounded geometry with a spin structure. For the associated free quantum field theory, we construct pure Hadamard states using global pseudodifferential calculus on a Cauchy surface. We also give two constructions of Hadamard states for Dirac fields for arbitrary spacetimes with a spin structure.(2nd revised version). Will appear in Rev. Math. Phys.
Using a strongly covariant formalism given by Carter for the deformations dynamics of p-branes in a curved background and a covariant and gauge invariant geometric structure constructed on the corresponding Witten's phase space, we identify the canonical variables for Dirac-Nambu-Goto [DNG] and Gauss-Bonnet [GB] system in string theory. Future extensions of the present results are outlined.
We introduce an equation named matrix Dirac equation which can be considered as a generalization of Dirac equation for an electron. The liaison between matrix Dirac equation and standard Dirac equation is discussed. We write a lagrangian from which matrix Dirac equation can be derived. This lagrangian is invariant under global unitary transformations of variables. The requirement of a local (gauge) invariance of lagrangian leads us to lagrangian with gauge fields.
We consider (2+1)-gravity with vanishing cosmological constant as a constrained dynamical system. By applying Dirac's gauge fixing procedure, we implement the constraints and determine the Dirac bracket on the gauge-invariant phase space. The chosen gauge fixing conditions have a natural physical interpretation and specify an observer in the spacetime. We derive explicit expressions for the resulting Dirac brackets and discuss their geometrical interpretation. In particular, we show that specifying an observer with respect to two point particles gives rise to conical spacetimes, whose deficit …
This paper studies distributed-parameter systems on Riemannian manifolds with respect to Stokes-Dirac structures in a language of contact geometry with fiber bundles. For the class where energy functionals are quadratic, it is shown that distributed-parameter port-Hamiltonian systems with respect to Stokes-Dirac structures on one, two, and three dimensional Riemannian manifolds are written in terms of contact Hamiltonian vector fields on bundles. Their fiber spaces are contact manifolds and base spaces are Riemannian manifolds. In addition, for a class of distributed-parameter port-Hamiltonian…
We derive an explicit formula for the scalar curvature over a two-torus with a Dirac operator conformally rescaled by a globally diagonalizable matrix. We show that the Gauss-Bonnet theorem holds and extend the result to all Riemann surfaces with Dirac operators modified in the same way.
The separability of the massive Dirac equation in the non-extreme Kerr geometry in horizon-penetrating advanced Eddington-Finkelstein-type coordinates is shown. To this end, the Kerr geometry is described in the Newman-Penrose formalism by a regular Carter tetrad and the Dirac spinors and matrices are defined in a chiral Newman-Penrose dyad representation. Applying Chandrasekhar's mode ansatz, the Dirac equation is separated into radial and angular systems of ordinary differential equations. Asymptotic radial solutions at infinity, the event horizon, and the Cauchy horizon are derived, and the…
In this paper, we solve the problem of giving a gauge-theoretic description of the natural Dirac structure on a Lie Group which plays a prominent role in the theory of D- branes for the Wess-Zumino-Witten model as well as the theory of quasi-Hamiltonian spaces. We describe the structure as an infinite-dimensional reduction of the space of connections over the circle. Our insight is that the formal Poisson structure on the space of connections is not an actual Poisson structure, but is itself a Dirac structure, due to the fact that it is defined by an unbounded operator. We also develop general…
In this paper we consider bound state solutions, i.e., normalizable time-periodic solutions of the Dirac equation in the exterior region of an extreme Kerr black hole with mass $M$ and angular momentum $J$. It is shown that for each azimuthal quantum number $k$ and for particular values of $J$ the Dirac equation has a bound state solution, and that the energy of this Dirac particle is uniquely determined by $ω= -\frac{kM}{2J}$. Moreover, we prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of bound states in the extreme Kerr-Newman geometry, and we give an explicit expression for th…
Within the framework of classical field theory, the connection between the Dirac field as the field of matter and the spacetime metric is discussed. Polarization structure of the Dirac field is shown to be rich enough to determine the spacetime metric locally and to explain the emergence of observed matter as localized waveforms. The localization of the waveforms is explained as the result of the local time slowdown and the Lorentz contraction as a dynamic re-shaping of the waveforms in the course of their acceleration. A definition of mass as a limiting curvature of the spinor-induced metric …
We prove that, in the non-extreme Kerr-Newman black hole geometry, the Dirac equation has no normalizable, time-periodic solutions. A key tool is Chandrasekhar's separation of the Dirac equation in this geometry. A similar non-existence theorem is established in a more general class of stationary, axisymmetric metrics in which the Dirac equation is known to be separable. These results indicate that, in contrast with the classical situation of massive particle orbits, a quantum mechanical Dirac particle must either disappear into the black hole or escape to infinity.
In a companion paper, we introduced a notion of multi-Dirac structures, a graded version of Dirac structures, and we discussed their relevance for classical field theories. In the current paper we focus on the geometry of multi-Dirac structures. After recalling the basic definitions, we introduce a graded multiplication and a multi-Courant bracket on the space of sections of a multi-Dirac structure, so that the space of sections has the structure of a Gerstenhaber algebra. We then show that the graph of a k-form on a manifold gives rise to a multi-Dirac structure and also that this multi-Dirac…
We consider the Cauchy problem for the massive Dirac equation in the non-extreme Kerr-Newman geometry outside the event horizon. We derive an integral representation for the Dirac propagator involving the solutions of the ODEs which arise in Chandrasekhar's separation of variables. It is proved that for initial data in L^\infty_loc near the event horizon with L^2 decay at infinity, the probability of the Dirac particle to be in any compact region of space tends to zero as t goes to infinity. This means that the Dirac particle must either disappear in the black hole or escape to infinity.
Motivated by the supersymmetric version of Dirac's theory, chiral models in field theory, and the quest of a geometric fundament for the Standard Model, we describe an approach to the differential geometry of vector bundles on (semi)-Riemannian manifolds based on the concepts of superspaces, superalgebras, superconnections, and generalized Dirac operators. In doing so we stay within the realm of commutative geometry.
We study Kohn-Dirac operators $D_θ$ on strictly pseudoconvex CR manifolds with ${\rm spin}^{\mathbb C}$ structure of weight $\ell\in{\mathbb Z}$. Certain components of $D_θ$ are CR invariants. We also derive CR invariant twistor operators of weight $\ell$. Harmonic spinors correspond to cohomology classes of some twisted Kohn-Rossi complex. Applying a Schrödinger-Lichnerowicz-type formula, we prove vanishing theorems for harmonic spinors and (twisted) Kohn-Rossi groups. We also derive obstructions to positive Webster curvature.
Stabilizing, by deformation, the algebra of relativistic quantum mechanics a non-commutative space-time geometry is obtained. The exterior algebra of this geometry leads to an extended massless Dirac equation which has both a massless and a large mass solution. The nature of the solutions is discussed, as well as the effects of coupling the two solutions.
We provide a limiting absorption principle for self-adjoint realizations of Dirac operators with electrostatic and Lorentz scalar $δ$-shell interactions supported on regular compact surfaces. Then we show completeness of the wave operators and give a representation formula for the scattering matrix.
The Cauchy problem is considered for the massive Dirac equation in the non-extreme Kerr-Newman geometry, for smooth initial data with compact support outside the event horizon and bounded angular momentum. We prove that the Dirac wave function decays in L^\infty_loc at least at the rate t^{-5/6}. For generic initial data, this rate of decay is sharp. We derive a formula for the probability p that the Dirac particle escapes to infinity. For various conditions on the initial data, we show that p=0,1 or 0<p<1. The proofs are based on a refined analysis of the Dirac propagator constructed in gr-qc…
Dirac delta function of matrix argument is employed frequently in the development of diverse fields such as Random Matrix Theory, Quantum Information Theory, etc. The purpose of the article is pedagogical, it begins by recalling detailed knowledge about Heaviside unit step function and Dirac delta function. Then its extensions of Dirac delta function to vector spaces and matrix spaces are discussed systematically, respectively. The detailed and elementary proofs of these results are provided. Though we have not seen these results formulated in the literature, there certainly are predecessors. …
We show that the principal part of the Dirac Hamiltonian in 3+1 dimensions emerges in a semi-classical approximation from a construction which encodes the kinematics of quantum gravity. The construction is a spectral triple over a configuration space of connections. It involves an algebra of holonomy loops represented as bounded operators on a separable Hilbert space and a Dirac type operator. Semi-classical states, which involve an averaging over points at which the product between loops is defined, are constructed and it is shown that the Dirac Hamiltonian emerges as the expectation value of…
Differential structure of a d-dimensional lattice, which is essentially a noncommutative exterior algebra, is defined using reductions in first order and second order of universal differential calculus in the context of noncommutative geometry (NCG) developed by Dimakis et al. This differential structure can be realized adopting a Dirac-Connes operator proposed by us recently within Connes' NCG. With matrix representations being specified, our Dirac-Connes operator corresponds to staggered Dirac operator, in the case that dimension of the lattice equals to 1, 2 and 4.
We introduce Random Matrix Models for the Hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator of QCD-like theories. We show that they are equivalent to the $ε$-limit of the chiral Lagrangian for Wilson chiral perturbation theory. Results are obtained for two-color QCD with quarks in the fundamental representation of the color group as well as any-color QCD with quarks in the adjoint representation. For $N_c=2$ we also have obtained the lattice spacing dependence of the quenched average spectral density for a fixed value of the index of the Dirac operator. Comparisons with direct numerical simulations of the rando…
The structure of the interaction Hamiltonian in the first order $S-$matrix element of a Dirac particle in an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) field is analyzed and shown to have interesting algebraic properties. It is demonstrated that as a consequence of these properties, this interaction Hamiltonian splits both the incident and outgoing waves in the the first order $S-$matrix into their $\frac{Σ_3}{2}-$components (eigenstates of the third component of the spin). The matrix element can then be viewed as the sum of two transitions taking place in these two channels of the spin. At the level of partial waves…
Spectral triples over noncommutative principal $\T^n$-bundles are studied, extending recent results about the noncommutative geometry of principal U(1)-bundles. We relate the noncommutative geometry of the total space of the bundle with the geometry of the base space. Moreover, strong connections are used to build new Dirac operators. We discuss as a particular case the commutative case, the noncommutative tori and theta deformed manifolds.
A basic problem in linear particle optics is to find a symplectic transformation that brings the (symmetric) beam matrix to a special diagonal form, called normal form. The conventional way to do this involves an eigenvalue-decomposition of a matrix related to the beam matrix, and may be applied to the case of 1, 2 or 3 particle degrees of freedom. For 2 degrees of freedom, a different normalization method involving "real Dirac matrices" has recently been proposed. In the present article, the mathematics of real Dirac matrices is presented differently. Another normalization recipe is given, an…
Borg-type uniqueness theorems for matrix-valued Jacobi operators H and supersymmetric Dirac difference operators D are proved. More precisely, assuming reflectionless matrix coefficients A, B in the self-adjoint Jacobi operator H=AS^+ + A^-S^- + B (with S^\pm the right/left shift operators on the lattice Z) and the spectrum of H to be a compact interval [E_-,E_+], E_- < E_+, we prove that A and B are certain multiples of the identity matrix. An analogous result which, however, displays a certain novel nonuniqueness feature, is proved for supersymmetric self-adjoint Dirac difference operators D…
We study discretization effects of the Wilson and staggered Dirac operator with $N_{\rm c}>2$ using chiral random matrix theory (chRMT). We obtain analytical results for the joint probability density of Wilson-chRMT in terms of a determinantal expression over complex pairs of eigenvalues, and real eigenvalues corresponding to eigenvectors of positive or negative chirality as well as for the eigenvalue densities. The explicit dependence on the lattice spacing can be readily read off from our results which are compared to numerical simulations of Wilson-chRMT. For the staggered Dirac operator we…
Using tools from Dirac geometry and through an explicit construction, we show that every Poisson homogeneous space of any Poisson Lie group admits an integration to a symplectic groupoid. Our theorem follows from a more general result which relates, for a principal bundle $M\to M/H$, integrations of a Dirac structure on $M/H$ to $H$-admissible integrations of its pullback Dirac structure on $M$ by pre-symplectic groupoids. Our construction gives a distinguished class of explicit real or holomorphic pre-symplectic and symplectic groupoids over semi-simple Lie groups and some of their homogeneou…
We identify the category of integrable lowest-weight representations of the loop group LG of a compact Lie group G with the linear category of twisted, conjugation-equivariant curved Fredholm complexes on the group G: namely, the twisted, equivariant matrix factorizations of a super-potential built from the loop rotation action on LG. This lifts the isomorphism of K-groups of [FHT1,2, 3] to an equivalence of categories. The construction uses families of Dirac operators.
A generalized two-dimensional periodic Dirac operator is considered, with $L^{\infty}$-matrix-valued coefficients of the first order derivatives and with complex matrix-valued potential. It is proved that if the matrix-valued potential has zero bound relative to the free Dirac operator, then the spectrum of the operator in question contains no eigenvalues.
The aim of this work is to find exact solutions of the one-dimensional Dirac equation that do not belong to the already known conventional class. We write the spinor wavefunction as a bounded infinite sum in a complete basis set, which is chosen such that the matrix representation of the Dirac wave operator becomes tridiagonal and symmetric. This makes the wave equation equivalent to a symmetric three-term recursion relation for the expansion coefficients of the wavefunction. We solve the recursion relation and obtain the relativistic energy spectrum and corresponding state functions. Restrict…
In this paper, we show that massless Dirac waves in the Schwarzschild geometry decay to zero at a rate $t^{-2λ}$, where $λ=1, 2,...$ is the angular momentum. Our technique is to use Chandrasekhar's separation of variables whereby the Dirac equations split into two sets of wave equations. For the first set, we show that the wave decays as $t^{-2λ}$. For the second set, in general, the solutions tend to some explicit profile at the rate $t^{-2λ}$. The decay rate of solutions of Dirac equations is achieved by showing that the coefficient of the explicit profile is exactly zero. The key ingredient…
We establish the connection between a multichannel disordered model --the 1D Dirac equation with $N\times N$ matricial random mass-- and a random matrix model corresponding to a deformation of the Laguerre ensemble. This allows us to derive exact determinantal representations for the density of states and identify its low energy ($\varepsilon\to0$) behaviour $ρ(\varepsilon)\sim|\varepsilon|^{α-1}$. The vanishing of the exponent $α$ for $N$ specific values of the averaged mass over disorder ratio corresponds to $N$ phase transitions of topological nature characterised by the change of a quantum…
A non-classical Weyl theory is developed for skew-self-adjoint Dirac systems with rectangular matrix potentials. The notion of the Weyl function is introduced and direct and inverse problems are solved. A Borg-Marchenko type uniqueness result and the evolution of the Weyl function for the corresponding focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation are also derived.
Expansion of a wave function in a basis of eigenfunctions of a differential eigenvalue problem lies at the heart of the R-matrix methods for both the Schrödinger and Dirac particles. A central issue that should be carefully analyzed when functional series are applied is their convergence. In the present paper, we study the properties of the eigenfunction expansions appearing in nonrelativistic and relativistic $R$-matrix theories. In particular, we confirm the findings of Rosenthal [J. Phys. G: Nucl. Phys. 13, 491 (1987)] and Szmytkowski and Hinze [J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 29, 761 (1996…
The Dirac equation for the electron around a five-dimensional rotating black hole with two different angular momenta is separated into purely radial and purely angular equations. The general solution is expressed as a superposition of solutions derived from these two decoupled ordinary differential equations. By separating variables for the massive Klein-Gordon equation in the same space-time background, I derive a simple and elegant form for the Stackel-Killing tensor, which can be easily written as the square of a rank-three Killing-Yano tensor. I have also explicitly constructed a symmetry …
We consider the massive Dirac equation in the non-extreme Kerr geometry in horizon-penetrating advanced Eddington-Finkelstein-type coordinates and derive a functional analytic integral representation of the associated propagator using the spectral theorem for unbounded self-adjoint operators, Stone's formula, and quantities arising in the analysis of Chandrasekhar's separation of variables. This integral representation describes the dynamics of Dirac particles outside and across the event horizon, up to the Cauchy horizon. In the derivation, we first write the Dirac equation in Hamiltonian for…
Consider a formally self-adjoint first order linear differential operator acting on pairs (2-columns) of complex-valued scalar fields over a 4-manifold without boundary. We examine the geometric content of such an operator and show that it implicitly contains a Lorentzian metric, Pauli matrices, connection coefficients for spinor fields and an electromagnetic covector potential. This observation allows us to give a simple representation of the massive Dirac equation as a system of four scalar equations involving an arbitrary two-by-two matrix operator as above and its adjugate. The point of th…
In this paper we introduce the Dirac and spin-Dirac operators associated to a connection on Riemann-Cartan space(time) and standard Dirac and spin-Dirac operators associated with a Levi-Civita connection on a Riemannian (Lorentzian) space(time) and calculate the square of these operators, which play an important role in several topics of modern Mathematics, in particular in the study of the geometry of moduli spaces of a class of black holes, the geometry of NS-5 brane solutions of type II supergravity theories and BPS solitons in some string theories. We obtain a generalized Lichnerowicz form…
