We consider (2+1)-gravity with vanishing cosmological constant as a constrained dynamical system. By applying Dirac's gauge fixing procedure, we implement the constraints and determine the Dirac bracket on the gauge-invariant phase space. The chosen gauge fixing conditions have a natural physical interpretation and specify an observer in the spacetime. We derive explicit expressions for the resulting Dirac brackets and discuss their geometrical interpretation. In particular, we show that specifying an observer with respect to two point particles gives rise to conical spacetimes, whose deficit angle and time shift are determined, respectively, by the relative velocity and minimal distance of the two particles.
We apply Dirac's gauge fixing procedure to (2+1)-gravity with vanishing cosmological constant. For general gauge fixing conditions based on two point particles, this yields explicit expressions for the Dirac bracket. We explain how gauge fixing is related to the introduction of an observer into the theory and show that the Dirac bracket is determined by a classical dynamical r-matrix. Its two dynamical variables correspond to the mass and spin of a cone that describes the residual degrees of freedom of the spacetime. We show that different gauge fixing conditions and different choices of obser…
The elements of the contrained dynamics algorithm in the De Donder-Weyl (DW) Hamiltonian theory for degenerate Lagrangian theories are discussed. A generalization of the Dirac bracket to the DW Hamiltonian theory with second class constraints (defined in the text) is presented.
So far, it is not well known how to deal with dissipative systems. There are many paths of investigation in the literature and none of them present a systematic and general procedure to tackle the problem. On the other hand, it is well known that the fractional formalism is a powerful alternative when treating dissipative problems. In this paper we propose a detailed way of attacking the issue using fractional calculus to construct an extension of the Dirac brackets in order to carry out the quantization of nonconservative theories through the standard canonical way. We believe that using the …
In this paper the Dirac and Faddeev-Jackiw formulation for Einstein's theory in the $G \rightarrow 0$ limit is performed; the fundamental Dirac's and Faddeev-Jackiw brackets for the theory are obtained. First, the Dirac brackets are constructed by eliminating the second class constraints remaining the first class ones, then we fix the gauge and we convert the first class constraints into second class constraints and the new fundamental Dirac's brackets are computed. Alternatively, we reproduce all relevant Dirac's results by means of the symplectic method. We identify the Faddeev-Jackiw constr…
The Barnich--Troessaert bracket is a proposal for a modified Poisson bracket on the covariant phase space for general relativity. The new bracket allows us to compute charges, which are otherwise not integrable. Yet there is a catch. There is a clear prescription for how to evaluate the new bracket for any such charge, but little is known how to extend the bracket to the entire phase space. This is a problem, because not every gravitational observable is also a charge. In this paper, we propose such an extension. The basic idea is to remove the radiative data from the covariant phase space. Th…
In this paper we derive the most general first-order symmetry operator commuting with the Dirac operator in all dimensions and signatures. Such an operator splits into Clifford even and Clifford odd parts which are given in terms of odd Killing-Yano and even closed conformal Killing-Yano inhomogeneous forms respectively. We study commutators of these symmetry operators and give necessary and sufficient conditions under which they remain of the first-order. In this specific setting we can introduce a Killing-Yano bracket, a bilinear operation acting on odd Killing-Yano and even closed conformal…
We derive for generally covariant theories the generic dependency of observables on the original fields, corresponding to coordinate-dependent gauge fixings. This gauge choice is equivalent to a choice of intrinsically defined coordinates accomplished with the aid of spacetime scalar fields. With our approach we make full contact with, and give a new perspective to, the "evolving constants of motion" program. We are able to directly derive generic properties of observables, especially their dynamics and their Poisson algebra in terms of Dirac brackets, extending earlier results in the literatu…
We study constrained Hamiltonian systems by utilizing general forms of time discretization. We show that for explicit discretizations, the requirement of preserving the canonical Poisson bracket under discrete evolution imposes strong conditions on both allowable discretizations and Hamiltonians. These conditions permit time discretizations for a limited class of Hamiltonians, which does not include homogeneous cosmological models. We also present two general classes of implicit discretizations which preserve Poisson brackets for any Hamiltonian. Both types of discretizations generically do no…
We recently constructed the $R$-Poincaré algebra from an appropriate deformed Poisson brackets which reproduce the Fock coordinate transformation. We showed then that the spacetime of this transformation is the de Sitter one. In this paper, we derive in the $R$-Minkowski spacetime the Dirac equation and show that this is none other than the Dirac equation in the de Sitter spacetime given by its conformally flat metric. Furthermore, we propose a new approach for solving Dirac's equation in the de Sitter spacetime using the Schrödinger picture.
We extend the analysis of the Hamiltonian formalism of the d-dimensional tetrad-connection gravity to the fermionic field by fixing the non-dynamic part of the spatial connection to zero. Although the reduced phase space is equipped with complicated Dirac brackets, the first-class constraints which generate the diffeomorphisms and the Lorentz transformations satisfy a closed algebra with structural constants analogous to that of the pure gravity. We also show the existence of a canonical transformation leading to a new reduced phase space equipped with Dirac brackets having a canonical form le…
The restriction to invariant connections in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space-time is discussed via the analysis of the Dirac brackets associated with the corresponding gauge fixing. This analysis allows us to establish the proper correspondence between reduced and un-reduced variables. In this respect, it is outlined how the holonomy-flux algebra coincides with the one of Loop Quantum Gravity if edges are parallel to simplicial vectors and the quantization of the model is performed via standard techniques by restricting admissible paths. Within this scheme, the discretization of the area spe…
We apply the Dirac procedure for constrained systems to the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner formalism linearized around the Friedmann-Lemaitre universe. We explain and employ some basic concepts such as Dirac observables, Dirac brackets, gauge-fixing conditions, reduced phase space, physical Hamiltonian and physical dynamics. In particular, we elaborate on the key concept which is the canonical isomorphism between different gauge-fixing surfaces. We apply our formalism to describe the reduced phase space of cosmological perturbations in some popular in the literature gauges. Our formalism is first devel…
We construct a Lorentz-covariant connection in the context of first order canonical gravity with non-vanishing Barbero-Immirzi parameter. To do so, we start with the phase space formulation derived from the canonical analysis of the Holst action in which the second class constraints have been solved explicitly. This allows us to avoid the use of Dirac brackets. In this context, we show that there is a "unique" Lorentz-covariant connection which is commutative in the sense of the Poisson bracket, and which furthermore agrees with the connection found by Alexandrov using the Dirac bracket. This …
By using the canonical and symplectic approaches an (nonstandard) alternative action describing linearized gravity is studied. We identify the complete set of Dirac's constraints, the counting of physical degrees of freedom is performed and the Dirac brackets are constructed. Furthermore, the symplectic analysis is developed which includes the complete set of Faddeev-Jackiw constraints and a symplectic tensor; from that symplectic matrix we show that the generalized Faddeev-Jackiw brackets and the Dirac ones coincide to each other. With all these results at hand, we prove that the number of ph…
This work contains a brief and elementary exposition of the foundations of Poisson and symplectic geometries, with an emphasis on applications for Hamiltonian systems with second-class constraints. In particular, we clarify the geometric meaning of the Dirac bracket on a symplectic manifold and provide a proof of the Jacobi identity on a Poisson manifold. A number of applications of the Dirac bracket are described: applications for the proof of the compatibility of a system consisting of differential and algebraic equations, as well as applications for the problem of reduction of a Hamiltonian…
We consider the first order connection formulation of 4D general relativity in the "orthogonal" gauge. We show how the partial gauge fixing of the phase space canonical coordinates leads to the appearance of second class constraints in the theory. We employ the gauge unfixing procedure in order to successfully complete the Dirac treatment of the system. While equivalent to the inversion of the Dirac matrix, the gauge unfixing allows us to work directly with the reduced phase space and the ordinary Poisson bracket. At the same time, we explicitly derive the new set of residual first class const…
The Hamiltonian of the Relativistic Theory of Gravitation (RTG) with nonzero graviton mass is derived. Scalar field is taken as a matter source. The second class constraints are excluded and Dirac brackets are obtained. There are no first class constraints in the theory. The Poincare group generators are found by specifying the family of hypersurfaces and the Poincare algebra is realized in Dirac brackets. This is in accordance with the statement that there are 10 conservation laws in the RTG.
We apply the Dirac procedure for constrained systems to the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner formalism linearized around the Bianchi I universe. We discuss and employ basic concepts such as Dirac observables, Dirac brackets, gauge-fixing conditions, reduced phase space, physical Hamiltonian, canonical isomorphism between different gauge-fixing surfaces and spacetime reconstruction. We relate this approach to the gauge-fixing procedure for non-perturbative canonical relativity. We discuss the issue of propagating a basis for the scalar-vector-tensor decomposition as, in an anisotropic universe, the wavefr…
We argue for Brackets Consistency to be a `Pillar of Geometry', i.e. a foundational approach, other Pillars being 1) Euclid's constructive approach, 2) the algebraic approach, 3) the projective approach, and 4) the geometrical automorphism groups `Erlangen' approach. We proceed via a distinct Pillar 5) - Killing's computational route to Erlangen's groups - firstly by picking out the ensuing geometrically significant brackets subalgebras as consistent possibilities. Secondly, by considering which generators, arising piecemeal from different generalized Killing equations, combine brackets-consis…
The implications of the SU(2) gauge fixing associated with the choice of invariant triads in Loop Quantum Cosmology are discussed for a Bianchi I model. In particular, via the analysis of Dirac brackets, it is outlined how the holonomy-flux algebra coincides with the one of Loop Quantum Gravity if paths are parallel to fiducial vectors only. This way the quantization procedure for the Bianchi I model is performed by applying the techniques developed in Loop Quantum Gravity but restricting the admissible paths. Furthermore, the local character retained by the reduced variables provides a relic …
The Jackiw-Teitelboim model written as a BF theory in two dimensions is analyzed by using the Dirac's and Faddeev-Jackiw formalism. The analysis consists in finding the full structure of the constraints, the gauge transformations, the counting of degrees of freedom and the generalized Faddeev-Jackiw brackets. The Poincaré symmetry and the diffeomorphisms are found. Further, we show that the Faddeev-Jackiw and Dirac's brackets coincide to each other.
We establish an equivalence between the Hamiltonian formulation of the Plebanski action for general relativity and the covariant canonical formulation of the Hilbert-Palatini action. This is done by comparing the symplectic structures of the two theories through the computation of Dirac brackets. We also construct a shifted connection with simplified Dirac brackets, playing an important role in the covariant loop quantization program, in the Plebanski framework. Implications for spin foam models are also discussed.
The canonical formalism of three dimensional gravity coupled with the Dirac field is considered. We introduce complex variables to simplify the Dirac brackets of canonical variables and examine the canonical structure of the theory. We discuss the reality conditions which guarantee the equivalence between the complex and real theory.
Observables 'are observed' whereas beables just 'are'. This gives beables more scope in the cosmological and quantum domains. Both observables and beables are entities that form 'brackets' with 'the constraints' that are 'equal to' zero. We explain how depending on circumstances, these could be, e.g., Poisson, Dirac, commutator, histories, Schouten-Nijenhuis, double or Nambu brackets, first-class, gauge, linear or effective constraints, and strong, weak or weak-effective equalities. The Dirac-Bergmann distinction in notions of gauge leads to further notions of observables or beables, and is ti…
We develop a complete Hamiltonian approach to the theory of perturbations around any spatially homogeneous spacetime. We employ the Dirac method for constrained systems which is well-suited to cosmological perturbations. We refine the method via the so-called Kucha\vr parametrization of the kinematical phase space. We separate the gauge-invariant dynamics of the three-surfaces from the three-surface deformations induced by linear coordinate transformations. The canonical group of the three-surface deformations and the complete space of gauge-fixing conditions are explicit in our approach. We i…
A perfect fluid is quantized by the canonical method. The constraints are found and this allows the Dirac brackets to be calculated. Replacing the Dirac brackets with quantum commutators formally quantizes the system. There is a momentum operator in the denominator of some coordinate quantum commutators. It is shown that it is possible to multiply throughout by this momentum operator. Factor ordering differences can result in a viscosity term. The resulting quantum commutator algebra is \vspace{1.0truein} \bc$v_{4}(v_{3}v_{2}-v_{2}v_{3})=-i,$\ec \bc$v_{4}(v_{1}v_{3}-v_{3}v_{1})=-iv_{3},$\ec \b…
