Borg-type uniqueness theorems for matrix-valued Jacobi operators H and supersymmetric Dirac difference operators D are proved. More precisely, assuming reflectionless matrix coefficients A, B in the self-adjoint Jacobi operator H=AS^+ + A^-S^- + B (with S^\pm the right/left shift operators on the lattice Z) and the spectrum of H to be a compact interval [E_-,E_+], E_- < E_+, we prove that A and B are certain multiples of the identity matrix. An analogous result which, however, displays a certain novel nonuniqueness feature, is proved for supersymmetric self-adjoint Dirac difference operators D with spectrum given by [-E_+^{1/2},-E_-^{1/2}] \cup [E_-^{1/2},E_+^{1/2}], 0 \leq E_- < E_+.
We prove a general Borg-type inverse spectral result for a reflectionless unitary CMV operator (CMV for Cantero, Moral, and Velázquez) associated with matrix-valued Verblunsky coefficients. More precisely, we find an explicit formula for the Verblunsky coefficients of a reflectionless CMV matrix whose spectrum consists of a connected arc on the unit circle. This extends a recent result on CMV operators with scalar-valued coefficients. In the course of deriving the Borg-type result we also use exponential Herglotz representations of Caratheodory matrix-valued functions to prove an infinite sequ…
We prove local and global versions of Borg-Marchenko-type uniqueness theorems for half-lattice and full-lattice CMV operators (CMV for Cantero, Moral, and Velazquez) with matrix-valued Verblunsky coefficients. While our half-lattice results are formulated in terms of matrix-valued Weyl-Titchmarsh functions, our full-lattice results involve the diagonal and main off-diagonal Green's matrices. We also develop the basics of Weyl-Titchmarsh theory for CMV operators with matrix-valued Verblunsky coefficients as this is of independent interest and an essential ingredient in proving the corresponding…
A result of Borg--Hochstadt in the theory of periodic Jacobi matrices states that such a matrix has constant diagonals as long as all gaps in its spectrum are closed (have zero length). We suggest a quantitative version of this result by proving the two-sided bounds between oscillations of the matrix entries along the diagonals and the length of the maximal gap in the spectrum.
A Borg-type uniqueness theorem for matrix-valued Schrödinger operators is proved. More precisely, assuming a reflectionless potential matrix and spectrum a half-line $[0,\infty)$, we derive triviality of the potential matrix. Our approach is based on trace formulas and matrix-valued Herglotz representation theorems. As a by-product of our techniques, we obtain an extension of Borg's classical result from the class of periodic scalar potentials to the class of reflectionless matrix-valued potentials.
We prove a generalization of the well-known theorems by Borg and Hochstadt for periodic self-adjoint Schrödinger operators without a spectral gap, respectively, one gap in their spectrum, in the matrix-valued context. Our extension of the theorems of Borg and Hochstadt replaces the periodicity condition of the potential by the more general property of being reflectionless (the resulting potentials then automatically turn out to be periodic and we recover Després' matrix version of Borg's result). In addition, we assume the spectra to have uniform maximum multiplicity (a condition automatically…
We develop singular Weyl-Titchmarsh-Kodaira theory for Jacobi operators. In particular, we establish existence of a spectral transformation as well as local Borg-Marchenko and Hochstadt-Liebermann type uniqueness results.
We present results on the unique reconstruction of a semi-infinite Jacobi operator from the spectra of the operator with two different boundary conditions. This is the discrete analogue of the Borg-Marchenko theorem for Schr{ö}dinger operators in the half-line. Furthermore, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for two real sequences to be the spectra of a Jacobi operator with different boundary conditions.
Building on work on Miura's transformation by Kappeler, Perry, Shubin, and Topalov, we develop a detailed spectral theoretic treatment of Schrödinger operators with matrix-valued potentials, with special emphasis on distributional potential coefficients. Our principal method relies on a supersymmetric (factorization) formalism underlying Miura's transformation, which intimately connects the triple of operators $(D, H_1, H_2)$ of the form [D= (0 & A^*, A & 0) \text{in} L^2(\mathbb{R})^{2m} \text{and} H_1 = A^* A, H_2 = A A^* \text{in} L^2(\mathbb{R})^m.] Here $A= I_m (d/dx) + ϕ$ in $L^2(\mathbb…
We provide a new short proof of the following fact, first proved by one of us in 1998: If two Weyl-Titchmarsh m-functions, $m_j(z)$, of two Schrödinger operators $H_j = -\f{d^2}{dx^2} + q_j$, j=1,2 in $L^2 ((0,R))$, $0<R\leq \infty$, are exponentially close, that is, $|m_1(z)- m_2(z)| \underset{|z|\to\infty}{=} O(e^{-2\Ima (z^{1/2})a})$, 0<a<R, then $q_1 = q_2$ a.e.~on $[0,a]$. The result applies to any boundary conditions at x=0 and x=R and should be considered a local version of the celebrated Borg-Marchenko uniqueness result (which is quickly recovered as a corollary to our proof). Moreover…
We present certain results on the direct and inverse spectral theory of the Jacobi operator with complex periodic coefficients. For instance, we show that any $N$-th degree polynomial whose leading coefficient is $(-1)^N$ is the Hill discriminant of finitely many discrete $N$-periodic Schrödinger operators (Theorem 1). Also, in the case where the spectrum is a closed interval we prove a result (Theorem 5) which is the analog of Borg's Theorem for the non-self-adjoint Jacobi case.
We consider periodic matrix-valued Jacobi operators. The spectrum of this operator is absolutely continuous and consists of intervals separated by gaps. We define the Lyapunov function, which is analytic on an associated Riemann surface. On each sheet the Lyapunov function has the standard properties of the Lyapunov function for the scalar case. We show that this function has (real or complex) branch points, which we call resonances. We prove that there exist two types of gaps: i) stable gaps, i.e., the endpoints are periodic and anti-periodic eigenvalues, ii) unstable (resonance) gaps, i.e., …
For the periodic matrix-valued Jacobi operator $J$ we obtain the estimate of the Lebesgue measure of the spectrum $|\s(J)|\le4 \min_n\Tr(a_na_n^*)^\frac12$, where $a_n$ are off-diagonal elements of $J$. Moreover estimates of width of spectral bands are obtained.
We extend in this work the Jitomirskaya-Last inequality and Last-Simoncriterion for the absolutely continuous spectral component of a half-line Schrödinger operator to the special class of matrix-valued Jacobi operators $H:l^2(\mathbb{Z},\mathbb{C})\rightarrow l^2(\mathbb{Z},\mathbb{C})$ given by the law $[H \textbf{u}]_{n} := D_{n - 1} \textbf{u}_{n - 1} + D_{n} \textbf{u}_{n + 1} + V_{n} \textbf{u}_{n}$, where $(D_n)_n$ and $(V_n)_n$ are bilateral sequences of $l\times l$ self-adjoint matrices such that $0<\inf_{n\in\mathbb{Z}}s_l[D_n]\le\sup_{n\in\mathbb{Z}}s_1[D_n]<\infty$ (here, $s_k[A]$ …

A self-adjoint first order system with Hermitian $π$-periodic potential $Q(z)$, integrable on compact sets, is considered. It is shown that all zeros of $Δ+ 2e^{-i\int_0^π\Im q dt}$ are double zeros if and only if this self-adjoint system is unitarily equivalent to one in which $Q(z)$ is $\fracπ{2}$-periodic. Furthermore, the zeros of $Δ- 2e^{-i\int_0^π\Im q dt}$ are all double zeros if and only if the associated self-adjoint system is unitarily equivalent to one in which $Q(z) = σ_2 Q(z) σ_2$. Here $Δ$ denotes the discriminant of the system and $σ_0$, $σ_2$ are Pauli matrices. Finally, it is …
Consider the Jacobi operators $\cJ$ given by $(\cJ y)_n=a_ny_{n+1}+b_ny_n+a_{n-1}^*y_{n-1}$, $y_n\in \C^m$ (here $y_0=y_{p+1}=0$), where $b_n=b_n^*$ and $a_n:\det a_n\ne 0$ are the sequences of $m\ts m$ matrices, $n=1,..,p$. We study two cases: (i) $a_n=a_n^*>0$; (ii) $a_n$ is a lower triangular matrix with real positive entries on the diagonal (the matrix $\cJ$ is $(2m+1)$-band $mp\ts mp$ matrix with positive entries on the first and the last diagonals). The spectrum of $\cJ$ is a finite sequence of real eigenvalues $ł_1<...<ł_N$, where each eigenvalue $ł_j$ has multiplicity $k_j\le m$. We sh…
We obtain matrix-valued Jost asymptotics for block Jacobi matrices under an L1-type condition on Jacobi parameters, and give a necessary and sufficient condition for an analytic matrix-valued function to be the Jost function of a block Jacobi matrix with exponentially converging parameters. This establishes the matrix-valued analogue of Damanik-Simon-II paper [6]. The above results allow us to fully characterize the matrix-valued Weyl-Titchmarsh m-functions of block Jacobi matrices with exponentially converging parameters.
We consider a one-frequency, quasi-periodic, block Jacobi operator, whose blocks are generic matrix-valued analytic functions. We establish Anderson localization for this type of operator under the assumption that the coupling constant is large enough but independent of the frequency. This generalizes a result of J. Bourgain and S. Jitomirskaya on localization for band lattice, quasi-periodic Schroedinger operators.
In this paper we approximate a Schrödinger operator on $L^2(\R)$ by Jacobi operators on $\ell^2(\Z)$ to provide new proofs of sharp Lieb-Thirring inequalities for the powers $γ=1/2$ and $γ=3/2$. To this end we first investigate spectral inequalities for Jacobi operators. Using the commutation method we present a new, direct proof of a sharp inequality corresponding to a Lieb-Thirring inequality for the power 3/2 on $\ell^2(\Z)$. We also introduce inequalities for higher powers of the eigenvalues as well as for matrix-valued potentials and compare our results to previously established bounds.
We give a comprehensive treatment of Sturm-Liouville operators with measure-valued coefficients including, a full discussion of self-adjoint extensions and boundary conditions, resolvents, and Weyl-Titchmarsh theory. We avoid previous technical restrictions and, at the same time, extend all results to a larger class of operators. Our operators include classical Sturm-Liouville operators, Lax operators arising in the treatment of the Camassa-Holm equation, Jacobi operators, and Sturm-Liouville operators on time scales as special cases.
We characterize the spectrum of one-dimensional Jacobi operators H=aS^{+}+a^{-}S^{-}+b in l^{2}(\Z) with quasi-periodic complex-valued algebro-geometric coefficients (which satisfy one (and hence infinitely many) equation(s) of the stationary Toda hierarchy) associated with nonsingular hyperelliptic curves. The spectrum of H coincides with the conditional stability set of H and can explicitly be described in terms of the mean value of the Green's function of H. As a result, the spectrum of H consists of finitely many simple analytic arcs in the complex plane. Crossings as well as confluences o…
Relations between half- and full-lattice CMV operators with scalar- and matrix-valued Verblunsky coefficients are investigated. In particular, the decoupling of full-lattice CMV operators into a direct sum of two half-lattice CMV operators by a perturbation of minimal rank is studied. Contrary to the Jacobi case, decoupling a full-lattice CMV matrix by changing one of the Verblunsky coefficients results in a perturbation of twice the minimal rank. The explicit form for the minimal rank perturbation and the resulting two half-lattice CMV matrices are obtained. In addition, formulas relating the…
We study spectral properties of Schrödinger operators with $δ$-interactions on a semi-axis by using the theory of boundary triplets and the corresponding Weyl functions. We establish a connection between spectral properties (deficiency indices, self-adjointness, semiboundedness, discreteness of spectra, resolvent comparability etc.) of Schrödinger operators with point interactions and a special class of block Jacobi matrices.
Let $g(z,x)$ denote the diagonal Green's matrix of a self-adjoint $m\times m$ matrix-valued Schrödinger operator $H= -\f{d^2}{dx^2}I_m +Q(x)$ in $L^2 (\bbR)^{m}$, $m\in\bbN$. One of the principal results proven in this paper states that for a fixed $x_0\in\bbR$ and all $z\in\bbC_+$, $g(z,x_0)$ and $g^\prime (z,x_0)$ uniquely determine the matrix-valued $m\times m$ potential $Q(x)$ for a.e.~$x\in\bbR$. We also prove the following local version of this result. Let $g_j(z,x)$, $j=1,2$ be the diagonal Green's matrices of the self-adjoint Schrödinger operators $H_j=-\f{d^2}{dx^2}I_m +Q_j(x)$ in $L^…
We discuss inverse spectral theory for singular differential operators on arbitrary intervals $(a,b) \subseteq \mathbb{R}$ associated with rather general differential expressions of the type \[τf = \frac{1}{r} \left(- \big(p[f' + s f]\big)' + s p[f' + s f] + qf\right), \] where the coefficients $p$, $q$, $r$, $s$ are Lebesgue measurable on $(a,b)$ with $p^{-1}$, $q$, $r$, $s \in L^1_{\text{loc}}((a,b); dx)$ and real-valued with $p\not=0$ and $r>0$ a.e.\ on $(a,b)$. In particular, we explicitly permit certain distributional potential coefficients. The inverse spectral theory results derived in …
The spectral decomposition for an explicit second-order differential operator $T$ is determined. The spectrum consists of a continuous part with multiplicity two, a continuous part with multiplicity one, and a finite discrete part with multiplicity one. The spectral analysis gives rise to a generalized Fourier transform with an explicit hypergeometric function as a kernel. Using Jacobi polynomials the operator $T$ can also be realized as a five-diagonal operator, hence leading to orthogonality relations for $2\times 2$-matrix-valued polynomials. These matrix-valued polynomials can be considere…
We study to what extent Lieb--Thirring inequalities are extendable from self-adjoint to general (possibly non-self-adjoint) Jacobi and Schrödinger operators. Namely, we prove the conjecture of Hansmann and Katriel from [Complex Anal. Oper. Theory 5, No. 1 (2011), 197-218] and answer another open question raised therein. The results are obtained by means of asymptotic analysis of eigenvalues of discrete Schrödinger operators with rectangular barrier potential and complex coupling. Applying the ideas in the continuous setting, we also solve a similar open problem for one-dimensional Schrödinger …
