We construct a Lipschitz curve in the free Carnot group of step 3 with 2 generators that meets every $C^{1}$ horizontal curve in a set of measure zero. This shows that the $C^{1}_{H}$-Lusin property fails in a strong sense in this group, and we deduce that such a curve must be purely $C^1_H$ 1-unrectifiable. Hence 1-rectifiability in Carnot groups is wildly different to its counterpart in Euclidean spaces, wherein the Whitney Extension Theorem guarantees that Lipschitz rectifiability and $C^1$ rectifiability are equivalent.
It is unknown if there exists a locally $α$-Hölder homeomorphism $f:\mathbb{R}^3\to \mathbb{H}^1$ for any $\frac{1}{2}< α\le \frac{2}{3}$, although the identity map $\mathbb{R}^3\to \mathbb{H}^1$ is locally $\frac{1}{2}$-Hölder. More generally, Gromov asked: Given $k$ and a Carnot group $G$, for which $α$ does there exist a locally $α$-Hölder homeomorphism $f:\mathbb{R}^k\to G$? Here, we equip a Carnot group $G$ with the Carnot-Carathéodory metric. In 2014, Balogh, Hajlasz, and Wildrick considered a variant of this problem. These authors proved that if $k>n$, there does not exist an injective,…
This paper is related to the problem of finding a good notion of rectifiability in sub-Riemannian geometry. In particular, we study which kind of results can be expected for smooth hypersurfaces in Carnot groups. Our main contribution will be a consequence of the following result: there exists a $C^{\infty}$ hypersurface $S$ without characteristic points that has uncountably many pairwise non-isomorphic tangent groups on every positive-measure subset. The example is found in a Carnot group of topological dimension 8, it has Hausdorff dimension 12 and so we use on it the Hausdorff measure $\mat…
We show that, given an absolutely continuous horizontal curve $γ$ in the Heisenberg group, there is a $C^1$ horizontal curve $Γ$ such that $Γ=γ$ and $Γ'=γ'$ outside a set of small measure. Conversely, we construct an absolutely continuous horizontal curve in the Engel group with no $C^1$ horizontal approximation.
In the setting of step two Carnot groups, we show a "cone property" for horizontally convex sets. Namely we prove that, given a horizontally convex set $C$, a pair of points $P\in \partial C$ and $Q\in $ int $C$, both belonging to a horizontal line $\ell$, then an open truncated subRiemannian cone around $\ell$ and with vertex at $P$ is contained in $C$. We apply our result to the problem of classification of horizontally monotone sets in Carnot groups. We are able to show that monotone sets in the direct product $\mathbb{H} \times\mathbb{R}$ of the Heisenberg group with the real line have hyp…
A Carnot group $\mathbb{G}$ admits Lusin approximation for horizontal curves if for any absolutely continuous horizontal curve $γ$ in $\mathbb{G}$ and $\varepsilon>0$, there is a $C^1$ horizontal curve $Γ$ such that $Γ=γ$ and $Γ'=γ'$ outside a set of measure at most $\varepsilon$. We verify this property for free Carnot groups of step 2 and show that it is preserved by images of Lie group homomorphisms preserving the horizontal layer. Consequently, all step 2 Carnot groups admit Lusin approximation for horizontal curves.
In this paper we introduce the notion of horizontally affine, h-affine in short, function and give a complete description of such functions on step-2 Carnot algebras. We show that the vector space of h-affine functions on the free step-2 rank-$n$ Carnot algebra is isomorphic to the exterior algebra of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Using that every Carnot algebra can be written as a quotient of a free Carnot algebra, we shall deduce from the free case a description of h-affine functions on arbitrary step-2 Carnot algebras, together with several characterizations of those step-2 Carnot algebras where h-affine…
We analyze some properties of a class of multiexponential maps appearing naturally in the geometric analysis of Carnot groups. We will see that such maps can be useful in at least two interesting problems. First, in relation to the analysis of some regularity properties of horizontally convex sets. Then, we will show that our multiexponential maps can be used to prove the Pansu differentiability of the subRiemannian distance from a fixed point.
In arbitrary Carnot groups we study intrinsic graphs of maps with horizontal target. These graphs are $C^1_H$ regular exactly when the map is uniformly intrinsically differentiable. Our first main result characterizes the uniformly intrinsic differentiability by means of Hölder properties along the projections of left-invariant vector fields on the graph. We strengthen the result in step-2 Carnot groups for intrinsic real-valued maps by only requiring horizontal regularity. We remark that such a refinement is not possible already in the easiest step-3 group. As a by-product of independent inte…
In Carnot groups of step 2 we consider sets having maximal or minimal possible homogeneous Hausdorff dimension compared to their Euclidean one: in the first case we prove that they must be in a sense vertical, that is a large part of these sets can lie off horizontal planes through their points, and in the latter case close to horizontal. The examples that had been used to prove the sharpness of the sub-Riemannian versus Euclidean dimension comparison intuitively satisfied these geometric properties, which we here quantify and prove to be necessary. We also show the sharpness of our statements…
We prove the local minimality of halfspaces in Carnot groups for a class of nonlocal functionals usually addressed as nonlocal perimeters. Moreover, in a class of Carnot groups in which the De Giorgi's rectifiability Theorem holds, we provide a lower bound for the $Γ$-liminf of the rescaled energy in terms of the horizontal perimeter.
Let $\mathbb{G}$ be any Carnot group. We prove that if a convolution type singular integral associated with a $1$-dimensional Calderón-Zygmund kernel is $L^2$-bounded on horizontal lines, with uniform bounds, then it is bounded in $L^p, p \in (1,\infty),$ on any compact $C^{1,α}, α\in (0,1],$ regular curve in $\mathbb{G}$.
We show that length minimizing curves in Carnot-Carathéodory spaces possess at any point at least one tangent curve (i.e., a blow-up in the nilpotent approximation) equal to a straight horizontal line. This is the first regularity result for length minimizers that holds with no assumption on either the space (e.g., its rank, step, or analyticity) or the curve, and it is novel even in the setting of Carnot groups.
In this paper we continue the study of the notion of $\mathscr{P}$-rectifiability in Carnot groups. We say that a Radon measure is $\mathscr{P}_h$-rectifiable, for $h\in\mathbb N$, if it has positive $h$-lower density and finite $h$-upper density almost everywhere, and, at almost every point, it admits a unique tangent measure up to multiples. In this paper we prove a Marstrand--Mattila rectifiability criterion in arbitrary Carnot groups for $\mathscr{P}$-rectifiable measures with tangent planes that admit a normal complementary subgroup. Namely, in this co-normal case, even if a priori the ta…
We compute the horizontal Hessian of the signed Carnot-Charatheodory distance from a surface S in the Heisenberg group H. The expression for the Hessian is in terms of the surface's intrinsic curvatures. As an application, we compute the horizontal Hessian of the Carnot-Charatheodory distance from a point in H.
We propose analogues of horizontal and vertical projections for model filiform jet space Carnot groups. Every pair consisting of the jet of a smooth function on $\mathbb{R}$ and a vertical hyperplane with first coordinate fixed provides a splitting of a model filiform group, which induces mappings of the group. We prove Marstrand-type theorems for these mappings and determine the possible Hausdorff dimensions of images of sets under these mappings. Analogues of projections for general jet space Carnot groups could be defined similarly.
We show that any Carnot group contains a closed nowhere dense set which has measure zero but is not $σ$-porous with respect to the Carnot-Carathéodory (CC) distance. In the first Heisenberg group we observe that there exist sets which are porous with respect to the CC distance but not the Euclidean distance and vice-versa. In Carnot groups we then construct a Lipschitz function which is Pansu differentiable at no point of a given $σ$-porous set and show preimages of open sets under the horizontal gradient are far from being porous.
This paper is devoted to the study of geodesic distances defined on a subdomain of a given Carnot group, which are bounded both from above and from below by fixed multiples of the Carnot-Carathéodory distance. We show that the uniform convergence (on compact sets) of these distances can be equivalently characterized in terms of $Γ$-convergence of several kinds of variational problems. Moreover, we investigate the relation between the class of intrinsic distances, their metric derivatives and the sub-Finsler convex metrics defined on the horizontal bundle.
The notion of curvature discussed in this paper is a far going generalization of the Riemannian sectional curvature. It was first introduced by Agrachev, Barilari and Rizzi in arXiv:1306.5318, and it is defined for a wide class of optimal control problems: a unified framework including geometric structures such as Riemannian, sub-Riemannian, Finsler, and sub-Finsler structures. In this work we study the generalized sectional curvature of Carnot groups with rank-two distributions. In particular, we consider the Cartan group and Carnot groups with horizontal distribution of Goursat-type. In thes…
We prove a rank-one theorem à la G. Alberti for the derivatives of vector-valued maps with bounded variation in a class of Carnot groups that includes Heisenberg groups $\mathbb H^n$ for $n\geq 2$. The main tools are properties relating the horizontal derivatives of a real-valued function with bounded variation and its subgraph.
A subset of a Carnot group is said to be precisely monotone if the restriction of its characteristic function to each integral curve of every left-invariant horizontal vector field is monotone. Equivalently, a precisely monotone set is a h-convex set with h-convex complement. Such sets have been introduced and classified in the Heisenberg setting by Cheeger and Kleiner in the 2010's. In the present paper, we study precisely monotone sets in the wider setting of step-2 Carnot groups, equivalently step-2 Carnot algebras. In addition to general properties, we prove a classification in step-2 rank…
The main motivation of this paper arises from the study of Carnot-Carathéodory spaces, where the class of 1-rectifiable sets does not contain smooth non-horizontal curves; therefore a new definition of rectifiable sets including non-horizontal curves is needed. This is why we introduce in any metric space a new class of curves, called continuously metric differentiable of degree $k$, which are Hölder but not Lipschitz continuous when $k>1$. Replacing Lipschitz curves by this kind of curves we define $({\cal H}^k,1)$-rectifiable sets and show a density result generalizing the corresponding one …
In the setting of step 2 sub-Finsler Carnot groups with strictly convex norms, we prove that all infinite geodesics are lines. It follows that for any other homogeneous distance, all geodesics are lines exactly when the induced norm on the horizontal space is strictly convex. As a further consequence, we show that all isometric embeddings between such homogeneous groups are affine. The core of the proof is an asymptotic study of the extremals given by the Pontryagin Maximum Principle.
We provide a Rademacher theorem for intrinsically Lipschitz functions $ϕ:U\subseteq \mathbb W\to \mathbb L$, where $U$ is a Borel set, $\mathbb W$ and $\mathbb L$ are complementary subgroups of a Carnot group, where we require that $\mathbb L$ is a normal subgroup. Our hypotheses are satisfied for example when $\mathbb W$ is a horizontal subgroup. Moreover, we provide an area formula for this class of intrinsically Lipschitz functions.
We study the Sard problem for the endpoint map in some well-known classes of Carnot groups. Our first main result deals with step 2 Carnot groups, where we provide lower bounds (depending only on the algebra of the group) on the codimension of the abnormal set; it turns out that our bound is always at least 3, which improves the result proved in arXiv:1503.03610 and settles a question emerged in arXiv:1709.02854. In our second main result we characterize the abnormal set in filiform groups and show that it is either a horizontal line, or a 3-dimensional algebraic variety.
Horizontal points of smooth submanifolds in stratified groups play the role of singular points with respect to the Carnot-Carathe'odory distance. When we consider hypersurfaces, they coincide with the well known characteristic points. In two step groups, we obtain pointwise estimates for the Riemannian surface measure at all horizontal points of $C^{1,1}$ smooth submanifolds. As an application, we establish an integral formula to compute the spherical Hausdorff measure of any $C^{1,1}$ submanifold. Our technique also shows that $C^2$ smooth submanifolds everywhere admit an intrinsic blow-up an…
We examine the theory of metric currents of Ambrosio and Kirchheim in the setting of spaces admitting differentiable structures in the sense of Cheeger and Keith. We prove that metric forms which vanish in the sense of Cheeger on a set must also vanish when paired with currents concentrated along that set. From this we deduce a generalization of the chain rule, and show that currents of absolutely continuous mass are given by integration against measurable $k$-vector fields. We further prove that if the underlying metric space is a Carnot group with its Carnot-Carathéodory distance, then every…
This paper contributes to the study of sets of finite intrinsic perimeter in Carnot groups. Our intent is to characterize in which groups the only sets with constant intrinsic normal are the vertical half-spaces. Our viewpoint is algebraic: such a phenomenon happens if and only if the semigroup generated by each horizontal half-space is a vertical half-space. We call \emph{semigenerated} those Carnot groups with this property. For Carnot groups of nilpotency step 3 we provide a complete characterization of semigeneration in terms of whether such groups do not have any Engel-type quotients. Eng…
In this article we study the validity of the Whitney $C^1$ extension property for horizontal curves in sub-Riemannian manifolds endowed with 1-jets that satisfy a first-order Taylor expansion compatibility condition. We first consider the equiregular case, where we show that the extension property holds true whenever a suitable non-singularity property holds for the input-output maps on the Carnot groups obtained by nilpotent approximation. We then discuss the case of sub-Riemannian manifolds with singular points and we show that all step-2 manifolds satisfy the $C^1$ extension property. We co…
In the Engel group with its Carnot group structure we study subsets of locally finite subRiemannian perimeter and possessing constant subRiemannian normal. We prove the rectifiability of such sets: more precisely we show that, in some specific coordinates, they are upper-graphs of entire Lipschitz functions (with respect to the Euclidean distance). However we find that, when they are written as intrinsic upper-graphs with respect to the direction of the normal, then the function defining the set might even fail to be continuous. Nevertheless, we can prove that one can always find other horizon…
We consider the Carnot-Carathéodory distance $δ_E$ to a closed set $E$ in the sub-Riemannian Heisenberg groups $\mathbb{H}^n$, $n\ge 1$. The $\mathbb{H}$-regularity of $δ_E$ is proved under mild conditions involving a general notion of singular points. In case $E$ is a Euclidean $C^k$ submanifold, $k\ge 2$, we prove that $δ_E$ is $C^k$ out of the singular set. Explicit expressions for the volume of the tubular neighborhood when the boundary of $E$ is of class $C^2$ are obtained, out of the singular set, in terms of the horizontal principal curvatures of $\partial E$ and of the function $\langl…
