Multiexponential maps in Carnot groups with applications to convexity and differentiability

We analyze some properties of a class of multiexponential maps appearing naturally in the geometric analysis of Carnot groups. We will see that such maps can be useful in at least two interesting problems. First, in relation to the analysis of some regularity properties of horizontally convex sets. Then, we will show that our multiexponential maps can be used to prove the Pansu differentiability of the subRiemannian distance from a fixed point.

Approximate Differentiability of Mappings of Carnot-Carathéodory Spaces

We study the approximate differentiability of measurable mappings of Carnot--Carathéodory spaces. We show that the approximate differentiability almost everywhere is equivalent to the approximate differentiability along the basic horizontal vector fields almost everywhere. As a geometric tool we prove the generalization of Rashevsky--Chow theorem for $C^1$-smooth vector fields. The main result of the paper extends theorems on approximate differentiability proved by Stepanoff (1923, 1925) and Whitney (1951) in Euclidean spaces and by Vodopyanov (2000) on Carnot groups.

Geometry of Carnot--Carathéodory Spaces, Differentiability and Coarea Formula

We give a simple proof of Gromov's Theorem on nilpotentization of vector fields, and exhibit a new method for obtaining quantitative estimates of comparing geometries of two different local Carnot groups in Carnot--Carathéodory spaces with $C^{1,α}$-smooth basis vector fields, $α\in[0,1]$. From here we obtain the similar estimates for comparing geometries of a Carnot--Carathéodory space and a local Carnot group. Gâteaux differentiability on infinite-dimensional Carnot groups

This paper contributes to the generalization of Rademacher's differentiability result for Lipschitz functions when the domain is infinite dimensional and has nonabelian group structure. We introduce the notion of metric scalable groups which are our infinite-dimensional analogues of Carnot groups. The groups in which we will mostly be interested are the ones that admit a dense increasing sequence of (finite-dimensional) Carnot subgroups. Intrinsic Differentiability and Intrinsic Regular Surfaces in Carnot Groups

A Carnot group G is a connected, simply connected, nilpotent Lie group with stratified Lie algebra. Intrinsic regular surfaces in Carnot groups play the same role as C^1 surfaces in Euclidean spaces. Porosity, Differentiability and Pansu's Theorem

We use porosity to study differentiability of Lipschitz maps on Carnot groups. Our first result states that directional derivatives of a Lipschitz function act linearly outside a $σ$-porous set. The second result states that irregular points of a Lipschitz function form a $σ$-porous set. We use these observations to give a new proof of Pansu's theorem for Lipschitz maps from a general Carnot group to a Euclidean space.

Fine properties of functions with bounded variation in Carnot-Carathéodory spaces

We study properties of functions with bounded variation in Carnot-Ca\-ra\-théo\-do\-ry spaces. We prove their almost everywhere approximate differentiability and we examine their approximate discontinuity set and the decomposition of their distributional derivatives. Under an additional assumption on the space, called property $\mathcal R$, we show that almost all approximate discontinuities are of jump type and we study a representation formula for the jump part of the derivative.

A C^k Lusin Approximation Theorem For Real-Valued Functions on Carnot Groups

We study the Lusin approximation problem for real-valued measurable functions on Carnot groups. We prove that k-approximate differentiability almost everywhere is equivalent to admitting a Lusin approximation by $C^{k}_{\mathbb{G}}$ maps. We also prove that existence of an approximate (k-1)-Taylor polynomial almost everywhere is equivalent to admitting a Lusin approximation by maps in a suitable Lipschitz function space.

Coarse differentiation and quantitative nonembeddability for Carnot groups

We give lower bound estimates for the macroscopic scale of coarse differentiability of Lipschitz maps from a Carnot group with the Carnot-Carathéodory metric $(G,\dcc)$ to a few different classes of metric spaces. Using this result, we derive lower bound estimates for quantitative nonembeddability of Lipschitz embeddings of $G$ into a metric space $(X,d_X)$ if $X$ is either an Alexandrov space with nonpositive or nonnegative curvature, a superreflexive Banach space, or another Carnot group that does not admit a biLipschitz homomorphic embedding of $G$. On the converse of Pansu's Theorem

We provide a suitable generalisation of Pansu's differentiability theorem to general Radon measures on Carnot groups and we show that if Lipschitz maps between Carnot groups are Pansu-differentiable almost everywhere for some Radon measures $μ$, then $μ$ must be absolutely continuous with respect to the Haar measure of the group.

Characterizations of uniformly differentiable co-horizontal intrinsic graphs in Carnot groups

In arbitrary Carnot groups we study intrinsic graphs of maps with horizontal target. These graphs are $C^1_H$ regular exactly when the map is uniformly intrinsically differentiable. Our first main result characterizes the uniformly intrinsic differentiability by means of Hölder properties along the projections of left-invariant vector fields on the graph. Differentiating maps into L^1 and the geometry of BV functions

This is one of a series of papers examining the interplay between differentiation theory for Lipschitz maps, X-->V, and bi-Lipschitz nonembeddability, where X is a metric measure space and V is a Banach space. Here, we consider the case V=L^1 where differentiability fails. We establish another kind of differentiability for certain X, including R^n and H, the Heisenberg group with its Carnot-Cartheodory metric.
