Granville-Soundararajan, Harper-Nikeghbali-Radziwill, and Heap-Lindqvist independently established an asymptotic for the even natural moments of partial sums of random multiplicative functions defined over integers. Building on these works, we study the even natural moments of partial sums of Steinhaus random multiplicative functions defined over function fields. Using a combination of analytic arguments and combinatorial arguments, we obtain asymptotic expressions for all the even natural moments in the large field limit and large degree limit, as well as an exact expression for the fourth moment.
We give an asymptotic formula for the $2k$th moment of a sum of multiplicative Steinhaus variables. This was recently computed independently by Harper, Nikeghbali and Radziwiłł. We also compute the $2k$th moment of a truncated characteristic polynomial of a unitary matrix. This provides an asymptotic equivalence with the moments of Steinhaus variables. Similar results for multiplicative Rademacher variables are given.
We provide a simple proof that the partial sums $\sum_{n\leq x}f(n)$ of a Rademacher random multiplicative function $f$ change sign infinitely often as $x\to\infty$, almost surely.
We prove convergence of a stochastic approximation of powers of the Riemann $ζ$ function to a non-Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure, and prove that this measure is a non-trivial multifractal random measure. The results cover both the subcritical and critical chaos. A basic ingredient of the proof is a 'good' Gaussian approximation of the induced random fields that is potentially of independent interest.
For $X(n)$ a Steinhaus random multiplicative function, we study the maximal size of the random Dirichlet polynomial $$ D_N(t) = \frac1{\sqrt{N}} \sum_{n \leq N} X(n) n^{it}, $$ with $t$ in various ranges. In particular, for fixed $C>0$ and any small $\varepsilon>0$ we show that, with high probability, $$ \exp( (\log N)^{1/2-\varepsilon} ) \ll \sup_{|t| \leq N^C} |D_N(t)| \ll \exp( (\log N)^{1/2+\varepsilon}). $$
We show that if $f$ is the random completely multiplicative function, the probability that $\sum_{n\le x}\frac{f(n)}{n}$ is positive for every $x$ is at least $1-10^{-45}$, while also strictly smaller than $1$. For large $x$, we prove an asymptotic upper bound of $O(\exp(-\exp( \frac{\log x}{C\log \log x })))$ on the exceptional probability that a particular truncation is negative, where $C$ is some positive constant.
We introduce the notion of a random matrix-valued multiplicative function, generalizing Rademacher random multiplicative functions to matrices. We provide an asymptotic for the second moment based on a linear recurrence property for Hilbert-Schmidt norms of sucessive products of random matrices. Moreover, we provide upper bounds for the higher even moments related to the generalized joint spectral radius.
For a wide class of sequences of integer domains $\mathcal{D}_n\subset\mathbb{N}^d$, $n\in\mathbb{N}$, we prove distributional limit theorems for $F(X_1^{(n)},\ldots,X_d^{(n)})$, where $F$ is a multivariate multiplicative function and $(X_1^{(n)},\ldots,X_d^{(n)})$ is a random vector with uniform distribution on $\mathcal{D}_n$. As a corollary, we obtain limit theorems for the greatest common divisor and least common multiple of the random set $\{X_1^{(n)},\ldots,X_d^{(n)}\}$. This generalizes previously known limit results for $\mathcal{D}_n$ being either a discrete cube or a discrete hyperbo…
We give lower bounds for the small moments of the sum of a random multiplicative function, which improve on some results of Bondarenko and Seip and constitute further progress towards (dis)proving a conjecture of Helson. We also prove asymptotics for the even integer moments. The latter have also been obtained very recently and independently by Heap and Lindqvist. Our proofs involve general lower bound techniques for random multiplicative functions, mean value results for multiplicative functions in several variables, and some calculations with Birkhoff polytopes.
We determine the order of magnitude of $\mathbb{E}|\sum_{n \leq x} f(n)|^{2q}$, where $f(n)$ is a Steinhaus or Rademacher random multiplicative function, and $0 \leq q \leq 1$. In the Steinhaus case, this is equivalent to determining the order of $\lim_{T \rightarrow \infty} \frac{1}{T} \int_{0}^{T} |\sum_{n \leq x} n^{-it}|^{2q} dt$. In particular, we find that $\mathbb{E}|\sum_{n \leq x} f(n)| \asymp \sqrt{x}/(\log\log x)^{1/4}$. This proves a conjecture of Helson that one should have better than squareroot cancellation in the first moment, and disproves counter-conjectures of various other …
We prove that if $f(n)$ is a Steinhaus or Rademacher random multiplicative function, there almost surely exist arbitrarily large values of $x$ for which $|\sum_{n \leq x} f(n)| \geq \sqrt{x} (\log\log x)^{1/4+o(1)}$. This is the first such bound that grows faster than $\sqrt{x}$, answering a question of Halász and proving a conjecture of Erdős. It is plausible that the exponent $1/4$ is sharp in this problem. The proofs work by establishing a multivariate Gaussian approximation for the sums $\sum_{n \leq x} f(n)$ at a sequence of $x$, conditional on the behaviour of $f(p)$ for all except the l…
We consider partial sums of a weighted Steinhaus random multiplicative function and view this as a model for the Riemann zeta function. We give a description of the tails and high moments of this object. Using these we determine the likely maximum of $T \log T$ independently sampled copies of our sum and find that this is in agreement with a conjecture of Farmer--Gonek--Hughes on the maximum of the Riemann zeta function. We also consider the question of almost sure bounds. We determine upper bounds on the level of squareroot cancellation and lower bounds which suggest a degree of cancellation …
We determine the order of magnitude of $\mathbb{E}|\sum_{n \leq x} f(n)|^{2q}$ up to factors of size $e^{O(q^2)}$, where $f(n)$ is a Steinhaus or Rademacher random multiplicative function, for all real $1 \leq q \leq \frac{c\log x}{\log\log x}$. In the Steinhaus case, we show that $\mathbb{E}|\sum_{n \leq x} f(n)|^{2q} = e^{O(q^2)} x^q (\frac{\log x}{q\log(2q)})^{(q-1)^2}$ on this whole range. In the Rademacher case, we find a transition in the behaviour of the moments when $q \approx (1+\sqrt{5})/2$, where the size starts to be dominated by "orthogonal" rather than "unitary" behaviour. We als…
Let $\mathcal{P}$ be the set of the primes. We consider a class of random multiplicative functions $f$ supported on the squarefree integers, such that $\{f(p)\}_{p\in\mathcal{P}}$ form a sequence of $\pm1$ valued independent random variables with $\mathbb{E} f(p)<0$, $\forall p\in \mathcal{P}$. The function $f$ is called strongly biased (towards classical Möbius function), if $\sum_{p\in\mathcal{P}}\frac{f(p)}{p}=-\infty$ a.s., and it is weakly biased if $\sum_{p\in\mathcal{P}}\frac{f(p)}{p} $ converges a.s. Let $M_f(x):=\sum_{n\leq x}f(n)$. We establish a number of necessary and sufficient co…
We investigate a special sequence of random variables $A(N)$ defined by an exponential power series with independent standard complex Gaussians $(X(k))_{k \geq 1}$. Introduced by Hughes, Keating, and O'Connell in the study of random matrix theory, this sequence relates to Gaussian multiplicative chaos (in particular "holomorphic multiplicative chaos'' per Najnudel, Paquette, and Simm) and random multiplicative functions. Soundararajan and Zaman recently determined the order of $\mathbb{E}[|A(N)|]$. By constructing an algorithm to calculate $A(N)$ in $O(N^2 \log N)$ steps, we produce computatio…
In this paper, we study the average size of the product of a number and its multiplicative inverse modulo a prime p. This turns out to be related to moments of L-functions and leads to a curious asymptotic formula for a certain triple exponential sum.
We consider a family of character sums as multiplicative analogues of Kloosterman sums. Using Gauss sums, Jacobi sums and Deligne's bound for hyper-Kloosterman sums, we establish asymptotic formulae for any real (positive) moments of the above character sum as the character runs over all non-trivial multiplicative characters mod $p.$ Moreover, an arcsine law is also established as a consequence of the method of moments. The evaluations of these moments also allow us to obtain asymptotic formulae for moments of such character sums weighted by special $L$-values (at $1/2$ and $1$).
In this article, we study the behavior of consecutive values of random completely multiplicative functions $(X_n)_{n \geq 1}$ whose values are i.i.d. at primes. We prove that for $X_2$ uniform on the unit circle, or uniform on the set of roots of unity of a given order, and for fixed $k \geq 1$, $X_{n+1}, \dots, X_{n+k}$ are independent if $n$ is large enough. Moreover, with the same assumption, we prove the almost sure convergence of the empirical measure $N^{-1} \sum_{n=1}^N δ_{(X_{n+1}, \dots, X_{n+k})}$ when $N$ goes to infinity, with an estimate of the rate of convergence. At the end of t…
The goal of this work is to prove an analogue of a recent result of Harper on almost sure lower bounds of random multiplicative functions, in a setting that can be thought of as a simplified function field analogue. It answers a question raised in work of Soundararajan and Zaman, who proved moment bounds for the same quantity in analogy to those of Harper in the random multiplicative setting. Having a simpler quantity allows us to make the proof close to self-contained, and perhaps somewhat more accessible.
We establish a normal approximation for the limiting distribution of partial sums of random Rademacher multiplicative functions over function fields, provided the number of irreducible factors of the polynomials is small enough. This parallels work of Harper for random Rademacher multiplicative functions over the integers.

We prove that if $ω$ is uniformly distributed on $[0,1]$, then as $T\to\infty$, $t\mapsto ζ(iωT+it+1/2)$ converges to a non-trivial random generalized function, which in turn is identified as a product of a very well behaved random smooth function and a random generalized function known as a complex Gaussian multiplicative chaos distribution. This demonstrates a novel rigorous connection between number theory and the theory of multiplicative chaos -- the latter is known to be connected to many other areas of mathematics. We also investigate the statistical behavior of the zeta function on the …
Let $1/2\leqβ<1$, $p$ be a generic prime number and $f_β$ be a random multiplicative function supported on the squarefree integers such that $(f_β(p))_{p}$ is an i.i.d. sequence of random variables with distribution $\mathbb{P}(f(p)=-1)=β=1-\mathbb{P}(f(p)=+1)$. Let $F_β$ be the Dirichlet series of $f_β$. We prove a formula involving measure-preserving transformations that relates the Riemann $ζ$ function with the Dirichlet series of $F_β$, for certain values of $β$, and give an application. Further, we prove that the Riemann hypothesis is connected with the mean behavior of a certain weighted…
We consider the random functions $S_N(z):=\sum_{n=1}^N z(n) $, where $z(n)$ is the completely multiplicative random function generated by independent Steinhaus variables $z(p)$. It is shown that ${\Bbb E} |S_N|\gg \sqrt{N}(\log N)^{-0.05616}$ and that $({\Bbb E} |S_N|^q)^{1/q}\gg_{q} \sqrt{N}(\log N)^{-0.07672}$ for all $q>0$.
Let $f$ be a Rademacher or a Steinhaus random multiplicative function. Let $\varepsilon>0$ small. We prove that, as $x\rightarrow +\infty$, we almost surely have $$\bigg|\sum_{\substack{n\leq x\\ P(n)>\sqrt{x}}}f(n)\bigg|\leq\sqrt{x}(\log\log x)^{1/4+\varepsilon},$$ where $P(n)$ stands for the largest prime factor of $n$. This gives an indication of the almost sure size of the largest fluctuations of $f$.
