We study the action of the Hecke operators $U_n$ on the space $\mathcal R$ of rational functions in one variable, over $\mathbb C$. The main goal is to give a complete classification of the eigenfunctions of $U_n$. We accomplish this by introducing certain number-theoretic directed graphs, called Zolotarev Graphs, which extend the well-known permutations due to Zolotarev.
We develop the theory of these Zolotarev graphs, using them to decompose the eigenfunctions of $U_n$ into certain natural finite-dimensional vector spaces of rational functions, which we call the eigenspaces. In this context, we prove that the dimension of each eigenspace is equal to the number of nodes of a cycle that belongs to its corresponding Zolotarev graph. We prove that the number of leaves of this Zolotarev graph equals the dimension of the kernel of $U_n$. We then give a novel number-theoretic formula for the number of cycles of fixed length, in each Zolotarev graph. We also study the simultaneous eigenfunctions for all of the $U_n$, and give explicit bases for all of them. In the process, we answer many questions that were set out in the work of Gil and Robins (2005). We also discover certain strong relations between these graphs and the kernel of $U_n$ acting on a subspace of $\mathcal R$; in particular, we give several equivalent conditions for the diagonalizibility of $U_n$.
Finally, we prove that the classical Artin Conjecture on primitive roots is equivalent to a new conjecture here, that infinitely many of these eigenspaces have dimension $1$.
Let $ϕ$ be a Laplace eigenfunction on a compact hyperbolic surface attached to an order in a quaternion algebra. Assuming that $ϕ$ is an eigenfunction of Hecke operators at a \emph{fixed finite} collection of primes, we prove an $L^\infty$-norm bound for $ϕ$ that improves upon the trivial estimate by a power of the logarithm of the eigenvalue. We have constructed an amplifier whose length depends on the support of the amplifier on Hecke trees. We have used a method of Bérard in \cite{Be} to improve the archimedean amplification.
We develop cohomological interpretations for several types of automorphic forms for Hecke triangle groups of infinite covolume. We then use these interpretations to establish explicit isomorphisms between spaces of automorphic forms, cohomology spaces and spaces of eigenfunctions of transfer operators. These results show a deep relation between spectral entities of Hecke surfaces of infinite volume and the dynamics of their geodesic flows.
We establish a one-to-one correspondence between conjugacy classes of any Hecke group and irreducible systems of poles of rational period functions for automorphic integrals on the same group. We use this correspondence to construct irreducible systems of poles and to count poles. We characterize Hecke-conjugation and Hecke-symmetry for poles of rational period functions in terms of the transpose of matrices in conjugacy classes. We construct new rational period functions and families of rational period functions.
This paper studies algebraic and analytic structures associated with the Lerch zeta function. It defines a family of two-variable Hecke operators $\{ T_m: \, m \ge 1\}$ given by $T_m(f)(a, c) = \frac{1}{m} \sum_{k=0}^{m-1} f(\frac{a+k}{m}, mc)$ acting on certain spaces of real- analytic functions , including Lerch zeta functions for various parameter values. It determines the action of various related operators on these function spaces . It characterizes Lerch zeta functions (for fixed $s$ in the following way. It shows that there is for each $s \in {\bf C}$ a two-dimensional vector space span…
It is well-known for an elliptic curve with complex multiplication that the existence of a $\mathbb{Q}$-rational model is equivalent to its field of moduli being equal to $\mathbb{Q}$, or its endomorphism ring being the ring of integers of 9 possible fields ($\ast$). Murabayashi and Umegaki proved analogous results for abelian surfaces. For three dimensional CM abelian varieties with rational fields of moduli, Chun narrowed down to a list of 37 possible CM fields. In this paper, we show that his list is exact. By constructing certain Hecke characters that satisfy a theorem of Shimura, we prove…
This paper gives a representation-theoretic interpretation of the Lerch zeta function and related Lerch $L$-functions twisted by Dirichlet characters. These functions are associated to a four-dimensional solvable real Lie group $H^{J}$, called here the sub-Jacobi group, which is a semi-direct product of $GL(1, {\mathbb R})$ with the Heisenberg group $H({\mathbb R})$. The Heisenberg group action on L^2-functions on the Heisenberg nilmanifold $H({\mathbb Z}) \backslash H({\mathbb R})$ decomposes as $\bigoplus_{N \in {\mathbb Z}} H_N$, where each space $H_N~ (N \neq 0)$ consists of $|N|$ copies o…
We study polynomials interpolating the (rational) constant terms of certain meromorphic modular forms for Hecke groups. We make observations about the divisibility properties of the constant terms and connect them to several sequences, for example, to O.E.I.S. sequence A005148 \cite{OEISNewmanShanks}, which was studied by Newman, Shanks and Zagier \cite{newman2004sequence}, \cite{newman2004sequenceAppendix} in an article on its use in series approximations to $π$.
Hecke operators relate characters of rational conformal field theories (RCFTs) with different central charges, and extend the previously studied Galois symmetry of modular representations and fusion algebras. We show that the conductor $N$ of a RCFT and the quadratic residues mod $N$ play an important role in the computation and classification of Galois permutations. We establish a field correspondence in different theories through the picture of effective central charge, which combines Galois inner automorphisms and the structure of simple currents. We then make a first attempt to extend Heck…
Over the last few years Pohl (partly jointly with coauthors) developed dual `slow/fast' transfer operator approaches to automorphic functions, resonances, and Selberg zeta functions for a certain class of hyperbolic surfaces $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$ with cusps and all finite-dimensional unitary representations $χ$ of $Γ$. The eigenfunctions with eigenvalue $1$ of the fast transfer operators determine the zeros of the Selberg zeta function for $(Γ,χ)$. Further, if $Γ$ is cofinite and $χ$ is the trivial one-dimensional representation then highly regular eigenfunctions with eigenvalue $1$ of the s…
We define Hecke operators on vector-valued modular forms of the type that appear as characters of rational conformal field theories (RCFTs). These operators extend the previously studied Galois symmetry of the modular representation and fusion algebra of RCFTs to a relation between RCFT characters. We apply our results to derive a number of relations between characters of known RCFTs with different central charges and also explore the relation between Hecke operators and RCFT characters as solutions to modular linear differential equations. We show that Hecke operators can be used to construct…
We study the rational Bianchi newforms (weight 2, trivial character, with rational Hecke eigenvalues) in the LMFDB that are not associated to elliptic curves, but instead to abelian surfaces with quaternionic multiplication. Two of these examples exhibit a rather special kind of behaviour: we show they arise from twisted base change of a classical newform with nebentypus character of order 4 and eight inner twists.
Let $G$ be a split connected reductive group over a finite field of characteristic $p > 2$ such that $G_\text{der}$ is absolutely almost simple. We give a geometric construction of perverse $\mathbb{F}_p$-sheaves on the Iwahori affine flag variety of $G$ which are central with respect to the convolution product. We deduce an explicit formula for an isomorphism from the spherical mod $p$ Hecke algebra to the center of the Iwahori mod $p$ Hecke algebra. We also give a formula for the central integral Bernstein elements in the Iwahori mod $p$ Hecke algebra. To accomplish these goals we construct …
There are various reasons why a naive analog of the Maeda conjecture has to fail for Drinfeld cusp forms. Focussing on double cusp forms and using the link found by Teitelbaum between Drinfeld cusp forms and certain harmonic cochains, we observed a while ago that all obvious counterexamples disappear for certain Hecke-invariant subquotients of spaces of Drinfeld cusp forms of fixed weight, which can be defined naturally via representation theory. The present work extends Teitelbaum's isomorphism to an adelic setting and to arbitrary levels, it makes precise the impact of representation theory,…
We prove the following statement: Let $X=\text{SL}_n(\mathbb{Z})\backslash \text{SL}_n(\mathbb{R})$, and consider the standard action of the diagonal group $A<\text{SL}_n(\mathbb{R})$ on it. Let $μ$ be an $A$-invariant probability measure on $X$, which is a limit $$ μ=λ\lim_i|ϕ_i|^2dx, $$ where $ϕ_i$ are normalized eigenfunctions of the Hecke algebra at some fixed place $p$, and $λ>0$ is some positive constant. Then any regular element $a\in A$ acts on $μ$ with positive entropy on almost every ergodic component. We also prove a similar result for lattices coming from division algebras over $\m…
Let $f : [0,1)\rightarrow [0,1)$ be a $2$-interval piecewise affine increasing map which is injective but not surjective. Such a map $f$ has a rotation number and can be parametrized by three real numbers. We make fully explicit the dynamics of $f$ thanks to two specific functions $δ$ and $ϕ$ depending on these parameters whose definitions involve Hecke-Mahler series. As an application, we show that the rotation number of $f$ is rational, when the three parameters are algebraic numbers.
