Motivated by problems of mathematical physics (quantum chaos) questions of equidistribution of eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator on a Riemannian manifold have been studied by several authors. We consider here, in analogy with arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces, orthonormal bases of eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator on the two dimensional unit sphere which are also eigenfunctions of an algebra of Hecke operators which act on these spherical harmonics. We formulate an analogue of the equidistribution of mass conjecture for these eigenfunctions as well as of the conjecture that their moments tend to moments of the Gaussian as the eigenvalue increases. For such orthonormal bases we show that these conjectures are related to the analytic properties of degree eight arithmetic L-functions associated to triples of eigenfunctions. Moreover we establish the conjecture for the third moments and give a conditional (on standard analytic conjectures about these arithmetic L-functions) proof of the equdistribution of mass conjecture.
We give an introduction to adelic mixing and its applications for mathematicians knowing about the mixing of the geodesic flow on hyperbolic surfaces. We focus on the example of the Hecke trees in the modular surface.
This is an introduction to the topics of the title, from the 2017 Grenoble Summer school on Arakelov geometry and arithmetic applications. We review Arithmetic intersection numbers, explain the definition of the height of a variety and its properties, both in the framework of classical Arakelov geometry and of Zhang's adelic formalism. We then discuss arithmetic ampleness and its application to the equidistribution theorem of Szpiro-Ullmo-Zhang-Yuan, both at complex and nonarchimedean places. We conclude with Ullmo-Zhang's proof of the Bogomolov conjecture over number fields.
We develop the relationship between quaternionic hyperbolic geometry and arithmetic counting or equidistribution applications, that arises from the action of arithmetic groups on quaternionic hyperbolic spaces, especially in dimension $2$. We prove a Mertens counting formula for the rational points over a definite quaternion algebra $A$ over $\mathbb Q$ in the light cone of quaternionic Hermitian forms, as well as a Neville equidistribution theorem of the set of rational points over $A$ in quaternionic Heisenberg groups.
We strongly develop the relationship between complex hyperbolic geometry and arithmetic counting or equidistribution applications, that arises from the action of arithmetic groups on complex hyperbolic spaces, especially in dimension $2$. We prove a Mertens' formula for the integer points over a quadratic imaginary number fields $K$ in the light cone of Hermitian forms, as well as an equidistribution theorem of the set of rational points over $K$ in Heisenberg groups. We give a counting formula for the cubic points over $K$ in the complex projective plane whose Galois conjugates are orthogonal…
We propose a criterion of equidistribution by the differentiability of certain arithmetic invariants. Combined with the slope method and the asymptotic measures, this criterion gives a new "conceptual" proof to equidistribution results originally obtained via the variation principle.
We prove a Hilbert-Samuel type result of arithmetic big line bundles in Arakelov geometry, which is an analogue of a classical theorem of Siu. An application of this result gives equidistribution of small points over algebraic dynamical systems, following the work of Szpiro-Ullmo-Zhang. We also generalize Chambert-Loir's non-archimedean equidistribution.
These are lecture notes from a course in arithmetic dynamics given in Grenoble in June 2017. The main purpose of this text is to explain how arithmetic equidistribution theory can be used in the dynamics of rational maps on P^1. We first briefly introduce the basics of the iteration theory of rational maps on the projective line over C, as well as some elements of iteration theory over an arbitrary complete valued field and the construction of dynamically defined height functions for rational functions defined over \overline Q. The equidistribution of small points gives some original informati…
Baker-Rumely and Favre-Rivera-Letelier independently proved an important arithmetic equidistribution theorem for points of small height on the Berkovich compactification of the projective line with respect to an adelic measure on $\mathbb{P}^1$. Around the same time, Chambert-Loir proved a more general version of this arithmetic equidistribution theorem in the setting of curves from a different approach. We generalize the notion of an adelic measure to that of a quasi-adelic measure on $\mathbb{P}^1$, and show that arithmetic equidistribution of points with small height holds for quasi-adelic …
We prove distribution estimates for primes in arithmetic progressions to large smooth squarefree moduli, with respect to congruence classes obeying Chinese Remainder Theorem conditions, obtaining an exponent of distribution $\frac{1}{2} + \frac{7}{300}$.
We develop the relation between hyperbolic geometry and arithmetic equidistribution problems that arises from the action of arithmetic groups on real hyperbolic spaces, especially in dimension up to 5. We prove generalisations of Mertens' formula for quadratic imaginary number fields and definite quaternion algebras over the rational numbers, counting results of quadratic irrationals with respect to two different natural complexities, and counting results of representations of (algebraic) integers by binary quadratic, Hermitian and Hamiltonian forms with error bounds. For each such statement, …
We asymptotically estimate the variance of the number of lattice points in a thin, randomly rotated annulus lying on the surface of the sphere. This partially resolves a conjecture of Bourgain, Rudnick, and Sarnak. We also obtain estimates that are valid for all balls and annuli that are not too small. Our results have several consequences: for a conjecture of Linnik on sums of two squares and a "microsquare", a conjecture of Bourgain and Rudnick on the number of lattice points lying in small balls on the surface of the sphere, the covering radius of the sphere, and the distribution of lattice…
We study the dynamics of stochastic families of rational maps on the projective line. As such families can be infinite and may not typically be defined over a single number field, we introduce the concept of generalized adelic measures, generalizing previous notions introduced by Favre and Rivera-Letelier and Mavraki and Ye. Generalized adelic measures are defined over the measure space of places of an algebraic closure of the rationals, using a framework established by Allcock and Vaaler. This turns our heights from sums over places into integrals. We prove an equidistribution result for gene…
We consider the analogue of the quantum unique ergodicity conjecture for holomorphic Hecke eigenforms on compact arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces. We show that this conjecture follows from nontrivial bounds for Hecke eigenvalues summed over quadratic progressions. Our reduction provides an analogue for the compact case of a criterion established by Luo--Sarnak for the case of the non-compact modular surface. The novelty is that known proofs of such criteria have depended crucially upon Fourier expansions, which are not available in the compact case. Unconditionally, we establish a twisted varian…
We state and investigate an integral analogue of the André-Oort conjecture (in integral models of Shimura varieties). We establish an instance of this conjecture: the case of a modular curve, as a scheme over Z. It is a scheme of dimension two and, already in this case, our conjecture is highly non-trivial. Our approach relies on equidistribution estimates related to subconvexity in analytic number theory and our result is unconditional.
We study large deviations for measurable averaging operators on state spaces of dynamical systems. Our main motivation is the Hecke operators on the modular curve Y_0(p^n) and their generalization to higher rank S-arithmetic quotients. We prove a relatively sharp large deviations result in terms of the norm of the averaging operator restricted to the orthogonal complement of the constant functions in L2. In the self-adjoint case this norm is expressible by the spectral gap. Developing ideas of Linnik and Ellenberg, Michel and Venkatesh, we use this large deviation result to prove an effective …
We consider N-tensor powers of a positive Hermitian line bundle L over a non-compact complex manifold X. In the compact case, B. Shiffman and S. Zelditch proved that the zeros of random sections become asymptotically uniformly distributed with respect to the natural measure coming from the curvature of L, as N tends to infinity. Under certain boundedness assumptions on the curvature of the canonical line bundle of X and on the Chern form of L we prove a non-compact version of this result. We give various applications, including the limiting distribution of zeros of cusp forms with respect to t…
We prove that arithmetic quantum unique ergodicity holds on compact arithmetic quotients of $GL(2,\mathbb{Q}_p)$ for automorphic forms belonging to the principal series. We interpret this conclusion in terms of the equidistribution of eigenfunctions on covers of a fixed regular graph or along nested sequences of regular graphs. Our results are the first of their kind on any p-adic arithmetic quotient. They may be understood as analogues of Lindenstrauss's theorem on the equidistribution of Maass forms on a compact arithmetic surface. The new ingredients here include the introduction of a repre…
We prove an analogue of Shnirelman, Zelditch and Colin de Verdiere's Quantum Ergodicity Theorems in a case where there is no underlying classical ergodicity. The system we consider is the Laplacian with a delta potential on the square torus. There are two types of wave functions: old eigenfunctions of the Laplacian, which are not affected by the scatterer, and new eigenfunctions which have a logarithmic singularity at the position of the scatterer. We prove that a full density subsequence of the new eigenfunctions equidistribute in phase space. Our estimates are uniform with respect to the cou…
Let $f$ be a rational function of degree $d>1$ on the projective line over a possibly non-archimedean algebraically closed field. A well-known process initiated by Brolin considers the pullbacks of points under iterates of $f$, and produces an important equilibrium measure. We define the asymptotic Fekete property of pullbacks of points, which means that they mirror the equilibrium measure appropriately. As application, we obtain an error estimate of equidistribution of pullbacks of points for $C^1$-test functions in terms of the proximity of wandering critical orbits to the initial points, an…
Linnik proved in the late 1950's the equidistribution of integer points on large spheres under a congruence condition. The congruence condition was lifted in 1988 by Duke (building on a break-through by Iwaniec) using completely different techniques. We conjecture that this equidistribution result also extends to the pairs consisting of a vector on the sphere and the shape of the lattice in its orthogonal complement. We use a joining result for higher rank diagonalizable actions to obtain this conjecture under an additional congruence condition.
We develop the notion of a Kleinian Sphere Packing, a generalization of "crystallographic" (Apollonian-like) sphere packings defined by Kontorovich-Nakamura [KN19]. Unlike crystallographic packings, Kleinian packings exist in all dimensions, as do "superintegral" such. We extend the Arithmeticity Theorem to Kleinian packings, that is, the superintegral ones come from Q-arithmetic lattices of simplest type. The same holds for more general objects we call Kleinian Bugs, in which the spheres need not be disjoint but can meet with dihedral angles pi/m for finitely many m. We settle two questions f…
For every $m\in\mathbb{N}$, we establish the equidistribution of the sequence of the averaged pull-backs of a Dirac measure at any given value in $\mathbb{C}\setminus\{0\}$ under the $m$-th order derivatives of the iterates of a polynomials $f\in \mathbb{C}[z]$ of degree $d>1$ towards the harmonic measure of the filled-in Julia set of $f$ with pole at $\infty$. We also establish non-archimedean and arithmetic counterparts using the potential theory on the Berkovich projective line and the adelic equidistribution theory over a number field $k$ for a sequence of effective divisors on $\mathbb{P}…
We obtain lower bounds for the number of nodal domains of Hecke eigenfunctions on the sphere. Assuming the generalized Lindelof hypothesis we prove that the number of nodal domains of any Hecke eigenfunction grows with the eigenvalue of the Laplacian. By a very different method, we show unconditionally that the average number of nodal domains of degree l Hecke eigenfunctions grows significantly faster than the uniform growth obtained under Lindelof.
We introduce the notion of a "crystallographic sphere packing," defined to be one whose limit set is that of a geometrically finite hyperbolic reflection group in one higher dimension. We exhibit for the first time an infinite family of conformally-inequivalent such with all radii being reciprocals of integers. We then prove a result in the opposite direction: the "superintegral" ones exist only in finitely many "commensurability classes," all in dimensions below 30.
We prove that if $B$ is a set of $N$ positive integers such that $B\cdot B$ contains an arithmetic progression of length $M$, then for some absolute $C > 0$, $$ π(M) + C \frac {M^{2/3}}{\log^2 M} \leq N, $$ where $π$ is the prime counting function. This improves on previously known bounds of the form $N = Ω(π(M))$ and gives a bound which is sharp up to the second order term, as Pach and Sándor gave an example for which $$ N < π(M)+ O\left(\frac {M^{2/3}}{\log^2 M} \right). $$ The main new tool is a reduction of the original problem to the question of approximate additive decomposition of the $…
We prove two results on arithmetic quantum chaos for dihedral Maass forms, both of which are manifestations of Berry's random wave conjecture: Planck scale mass equidistribution and an asymptotic formula for the fourth moment. For level $1$ forms, these results were previously known for Eisenstein series and conditionally on the generalised Lindelof hypothesis for Hecke-Maass eigenforms. A key aspect of the proofs is bounds for certain mixed moments of $L$-functions that imply hybrid subconvexity.
We study the number of nodal components (connected components of the set of zeroes) of functions in the ensemble of arithmetic random waves, that is, random eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the flat $d$-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^{d}$ ($d\ge2$). Let $f_{L}$ be a random solution to $Δf+4π^{2}L^{2}f=0$ on $\mathbb{T}^{d}$, where $L^{2}$ is a sum of $d$ squares of integers, and let $N_{L}$ be the random number of nodal components of $f_{L}$. By recent results of Nazarov and Sodin, $\mathbb{E}\left\{ N_{L}/L^{d}\right\} $ tends to a limit $ν>0$, depending only on $d$, as $L\to\infty$ subject …
We study a variety of problems about homothets of sets related to the Kakeya conjecture. In particular, we show many of these problems are equivalent to the arithmetic Kakeya conjecture of Katz and Tao. We also provide a proof that the arithmetic Kakeya conjecture implies the Kakeya conjecture for packing dimension, as this implication was previously only known for Minkowski dimension. We consider several questions analogous to the classical results of Stein and Bourgain about the Lebesgue measure of a set containing a sphere centered at every point of $[0,1]^n$, where we replace spheres by ar…
We consider a random Gaussian ensemble of Laplace eigenfunctions on the 3D torus, and investigate the 1-dimensional Hausdorff measure (`length') of nodal intersections against a smooth 2-dimensional toral sub-manifold (`surface'). The expected length is universally proportional to the area of the reference surface, times the wavenumber, independent of the geometry. For surfaces contained in a plane, we give an upper bound for the nodal intersection length variance, depending on the arithmetic properties of the plane. The bound is established via estimates on the number of lattice points in spe…
We investigate a question of Cooper adjacent to the Virtual Haken Conjecture. Assuming certain conjectures in number theory, we show that there exist hyperbolic rational homology 3-spheres with arbitrarily large injectivity radius. These examples come from a tower of abelian covers of an explicit arithmetic 3-manifold. The conjectures we must assume are the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis and a mild strengthening of results of Taylor et al on part of the Langlands Program for GL_2 of an imaginary quadratic field. The proof of this theorem involves ruling out the existence of an irreducible two …
