Dedekind sums are well-studied arithmetic sums, with values uniformly distributed on the unit interval. Based on their relation to certain modular forms, Dedekind sums may be defined as functions on the cusp set of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. We present a compatible notion of Dedekind sums, which we name Dedekind symbols, for any non-cocompact lattice $Γ<SL(2,\mathbb{R})$, and prove the corresponding equidistribution mod 1 result. The latter part builds up on a paper of Vardi, who first connected exponential sums of Dedekind sums to Kloosterman sums.
For the generalized Dedekind sums s_{ij}(p,q) defined in association with the x^{i}y^{j}-coefficient of the Todd power series of the lattice cone in R^2 generated by (1,0) and (q,p), we associate an exponential sum. We obtain this exponential sum using the cocycle property of the Todd series of 2d cones and the nonsingular cone decomposition along with the continued fraction of q/p. Its Weil bound is given for the modulus q, applying the purity theorem of the cohomology of the related l-adic sheaf due to Denef and Loeser. The Weil type bound of Denef and Loeser fulfills the Weyl's equidistribu…
Let $D$ be a Dedekind domain. Roughly speaking, a simultaneous $\mathfrak{p}$-ordering is a sequence of elements from $D$ which is equidistributed modulo every power of every prime ideal in $D$ as well as possible. Bhargava asked which subsets of the Dedekind domains admit simultaneous $\mathfrak{p}$-orderings. We give an overview on the progress in this problem. We also explain how it relates to the theory of integer valued polynomials and list some open problems.
We establish a joint distribution result concerning the fractional part of $αp^θ$ for $θ\in (0,1), \ α>0$, where $p$ is a prime satisfying a Chebotarev condition in a fixed finite Galois extension over $\mathbb{Q}$. As an application, for a fixed non-CM elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$, an asymptotic formula is given for the number of primes at the extremes of the Sato-Tate measure modulo a large prime $\ell$. These are precisely the primes $p$ for which the Frobenius trace $a_p(E)$ satisfies the congruence $a_p(E)\equiv [2\sqrt{p}] \bmod \ell$. We assume a zero-free region hypothesis for Dedekin…
Hickerson made an explicit formula for Dedekind sums $s(p,q)$ in terms of the continued fraction of $p/q$. We develop analogous formula for generalized Dedekind sums $s_{i,j}(p,q)$ defined in association with the $x^{i}y^{j}$-coefficient of the Todd power series of the lattice cone in $\Bbb{R}^2$ generated by $(1,0)$ and $(p,q)$. The formula generalizes Hickerson's original one and reduces to Hickerson's for $i=j=1$. In the formula, generalized Dedekind sums are divided into two parts: the integral $s^I_{ij}(p,q)$ and the fractional $s^R_{ij}(p,q)$. We apply the formula to Siegel's formula for…
We consider generalized Dedekind sums in dimension $n$, for fixed $n$-tuple of natural numbers, defined as sum of products of values of periodic Bernoulli functions. This includes the higher dimensional Dedekind sums of Zagier and Apostol-Carlitz' generalized Dedekind sums as well as the original Dedekind sums. These are realized as coefficients of Todd series of lattice cones and satisfy reciprocity law from the cocycle property of Todd series. Using iterated residue formula, we compute the coefficient of the decomposition of of the Todd series corresponding to a nonsingular decomposition of …
Dedekind symbols are generalizations of the classical Dedekind sums (symbols). There is a natural isomorphism between the space of Dedekind symbols with Laurent polynomial reciprocity laws and the space of modular forms. We will define a new elliptic analogue of the Apostol-Dedekind sums. Then we will show that the newly defined sums generate all odd Dedekind symbols with Laurent polynomial reciprocity laws. Our construction is based on Machide's result on his elliptic Dedekind-Rademacher sums. As an application of our results, we discover Eisenstein series identities which generalize certain …
Dedekind sums occur in the transformation behaviour of the logarithm of the Dedekind eta-function under substitutions from the modular group. In 1892, Dedekind showed a reciprocity relation for the Dedekind sums. Apostol generalized Dedekind sums by replacing the first Bernoulli function appearing in them by any Bernoulli functions and derived a reciprocity relation for the generalized Dedekind sums. In this paper, we consider poly-Dedekind sums which are obtained from the Dedekind sums by replacing the first Bernoulli function by any type 2 poly-Bernoulli functions of arbitrary indices and pr…
For a positive integer k and an arbitrary integer h, the Dedekind sum s(h,k) was first studied by Dedekind because of the prominent role it plays in the transformation theory of the Dedekind eta-function, which is a modular form of weight 1/2 for the full modular group SL_2(Z). There is an extensive literature about the Dedekind sums. Rademacher [8] has written an introductory book on the subject.
The classical Dedekind sums appear in the transformation behavior of the logarithm of the Dedekind eta-function under substitutions from the modular group. The Dedekind sums and their generalizations are defined in terms of Bernoulli functions and their generalizations, and are shown to satisfy some reciprocity relations. In contrast, Dedekind type DC (Daehee and Changhee) sums and their generalizations are defined in terms of Euler functions and their generalizations. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the poly-Dedekind type DC sums, which are obtained from the Dedekind type DC sums by…
Let a, a_1, ..., a_d be positive integers, m_1, ..., m_d nonnegative integers, and z_1, ..., z_d complex numbers. We study expressions of the form \[ \sum_{k \text{mod} a} \prod_{j=1}^d \cot^{(m_j)} π(\frac{k a_j}{a} + z_j ) . \] Here the sum is taken over all k mod a for which the summand is not singular. These Dedekind cotangent sums generalize and unify various arithmetic sums introduced by Dedekind, Rademacher, Apostol, Carlitz, Zagier, Berndt, Meyer, Sczech, and Dieter. Generalized Dedekind sums appear in various areas such as analytic and algebraic number theory, topology, algebraic and …
We define and study generalized Dedekind symbols with values in non--necessarily commutative groups, generalizing constructions of Sh. Fukuhara in [Fu1], [Fu2]. Basic examples of such symbols are obtained by replacing period integrals of modular forms (cf. [Ma1], [Ma2], [Kn1], [Kn2], [ChZ]) by iterated period integrals introduced and studied in [Ma3], [Ma4].
In a previous paper, I have defined non--commutative generalized Dedekind symbols for classical $PSL(2,Z)$--cusp forms using iterated period polynomials. Here I generalize this construction to forms of real weights using their iterated period functions introduced and studied in a recent article by R.~Bruggeman and Y.~Choie.
In this paper, a transformation formula under modular substitutions is derived for a large class of generalized Eisenstein series. Appearing in the transformation formulae are generalizations of Dedekind sums involving the periodic Bernoulli function. Reciprocity theorems are proved for these Dedekind sums. Furthermore, as an application of the transformation formulae, relations between various infinite series and evaluations of several infinite series are deduced. Finally, we consider these sums for some special cases.
Let $s(a,b)$ denote the classical Dedekind sum and $S(a,b)=12s(a,b)$. Recently, Du and Zhang proved the following reciprocity formula. If $a$ and $b$ are odd natural numbers, $(a,b)=1$, then $$ S(2a^*,b)+S(2b^*,a)=\frac{a^2+b^2+4}{2ab}-3, $$ where $aa^*\equiv 1\mod b$ and $bb^* \equiv 1 \mod a$. In this paper we show that this formula is a special case of a series of similar reciprocity formulas. Whereas Du and Zhang worked with the connection of Dedekind sums and values of $L$-series, our main tool is the three-term relation for Dedekind sums.
In [Girstmair, A criterion for the equality of Dedekind sums mod $\mathbb{Z}$, Internat. J. Number Theory 10: (2014) 565--568], it was shown that the necessary condition $b \mid (a_1 a_2-1)(a_1-a_2)$ for equality of two dedekind sums $s(a_1,b)$ and $s(a_2,b)$ given in [Jabuka, Robins and Wang, When are two Dedekind sums equal? Internat. J. Number Theory 7: (2011) 2197--2202] is equivalent to $12s(a_1,b)-12s(a_2,b) \in \mathbb{Z}$. In this note, we give a new proof of this result and then find two additional necessary and sufficient conditions for $12s(a_1,b)-12s(a_2,b) \in 2\mathbb{Z}, 4\mathb…
Dedekind sums $s(m,n)$ occur in many fields of mathematics. Since $s(m_1,n)=s(m_2,n)$ if $m_1\equiv m_2$ mod $n$, it is natural to ask which of the Dedekind sums $s(m,n)$, $0\le m<n$, take equal values. So far no simple criterion is known by which the equality of $s(m_1,n)$ and $s(m_2,n)$ could be decided. In this note we show how to obtain non-obvious examples of equal Dedekind sums. We consider two cases which mark the extreme possibilities for the argument $n$, namely, $n$ a prime power and $n$ square-free. Whereas we can give a partial overview of equal Dedekind sums in the prime power cas…
Using a generalization due to Lerch [M. Lerch, Sur un théorème de Zolotarev. Bull. Intern. de l'Acad. François Joseph 3 (1896), 34-37] of a classical lemma of Zolotarev, employed in Zolotarev's proof of the law of quadratic reciprocity, we determine necessary and sufficient conditions for the difference of two Dedekind sums to be in $8\mathbb{Z}$. These yield new necessary conditions for equality of two Dedekind sums. In addition, we resolve a conjecture of Girstmair [Girstmair, Congruences mod 4 for the alternating sum of the partial quotients, arXiv: 1501.00655].
Let $E(z,s)$ be the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series for the modular group $SL(2,{\mathbb Z})$. The classical Kronecker limit formula shows that the second term in the Laurent expansion at $s=1$ of $E(z,s)$ is essentially the logarithm of the Dedekind eta function. This eta function is a weight $1/2$ modular form and Dedekind expressed its multiplier system in terms of Dedekind sums. Building on work of Goldstein, we extend these results from the modular group to more general Fuchsian groups $Γ$. The analogue of the eta function has a multiplier system that may be expressed in terms of a map …
Higher-dimensional Dedekind sums are defined as a generalization of a recent 1-dimensional probability model of Dilcher and Girstmair to a d-dimensional cube. The analysis of the frequency distribution of marked lattice points leads to new formulae in certain special cases, and to new bounds for the classical Dedekind sums. Upper bounds for the generalized Dedekind sums are defined in terms of 1-dimensional moments. In the classical two-dimensional case, the ratio of these sums to their upper bounds are cosines of angles between certain vectors of n-dimensional cones, conjectured to have a lar…
In the present paper, our objective is to treat a p-adic continuous function for an odd prime to inside a p-adic q-analogue of the higher order Dedekind-type sums with weight in connection with modified q-Genocchi polynomials with weight alpha by using p-adic invariant q-integral on Zp.
We give a number field analogue of a result of Ramanujan, Hardy and Littlewood, thereby obtaining a modular relation involving the non-trivial zeros of the Dedekind zeta function. We also provide a Riesz-type criterion for the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis for $ζ_K(s)$. New elegant transformations are obtained when $K$ is a quadratic extension, one of which involves the modified Bessel function of the second kind.
Let $S(a,b)=12s(a,b)$, where $s(a,b)$ denotes the classical Dedekind sum. For a given denominator $q\in \mathbb N$, we study the numerators $k\in\mathbb Z$ of the values $k/q$, $(k,q)=1$, of Dedekind sums $S(a,b)$. Our main result says that if $k$ is such a numerator, then the whole residue class of $k$ modulo $(q^2-1)q$ consists of numerators of this kind. This fact reduces the task of finding all possible numerators $k$ to that of finding representatives for finitely many residue classes modulo $(q^2-1)q$. By means of the proof of this result we have determined all possible numerators $k$ fo…
We consider families of exponential sums indexed by a subgroup of invertible classes modulo some prime power $q$. For fixed $d$, we restrict to moduli $q$ so that there is a unique subgroup of invertible classes modulo $q$ of order $d$. We study distribution properties of these families of sums as $q$ grows and we establish equidistribution results in some regions of the complex plane which are described as the image of a multi-dimensional torus via an explicit Laurent polynomial. In some cases, the region of equidistribution can be interpreted as the one delimited by a hypocycloid, or as a Mi…
Let $s(a,b)$ denote the classical Dedekind sum and $S(a,b)=12s(a,b)$. Let $k/q$, $q\in \Bbb N$, $k\in \Bbb Z$, $(k,q)=1$, be the value of $S(a,b)$. In a previous paper we showed that there are pairs $(a_r,b_r)$, $r\in\Bbb N$, such that $S(a_r,b_r)=k/q$ for all $r\in \Bbb N$, the $b_r$'s growing in $r$ exponentially. Here we exhibit such a sequence with $b_r$ a polynomial of degree $4$ in $r$.
A natural question about Dedekind sums is to find conditions on the integers $a_1, a_2$, and $b$ such that $s(a_1,b) = s(a_2, b)$. We prove that if the former equality holds then $ b \ | \ (a_1a_2-1)(a_1-a_2)$. Surprisingly, to the best of our knowledge such statements have not appeared in the literature. A similar theorem is proved for the more general Dedekind-Rademacher sums as well, namely that for any fixed non-negative integer $n$, a positive integer modulus $b$, and two integers $a_1$ and $a_2$ that are relatively prime to $b$, the hypothesis $r_n (a_1,b)= r_n (a_2,b)$ implies that $b \…
We prove distribution estimates for primes in arithmetic progressions to large smooth squarefree moduli, with respect to congruence classes obeying Chinese Remainder Theorem conditions, obtaining an exponent of distribution $\frac{1}{2} + \frac{7}{300}$.
We give a simple proof for the reciprocity formulas of character Dedekind sums associated with two primitive characters, whose modulus need not to be same, by utilizing the character analogue of the Euler-MacLaurin summation formula. Moreover, we extend known results on the integral of products of Bernoulli polynomials by considering the integral \[ \int\limits_{0}^{x}B_{n_{1}}(b_{1}z+y_{1})... B_{n_{r}}(b_{r}z+y_{r}) dz, \] where $b_{l}$ $(b_{l}\neq 0)$ and $y_{l}$ $(1\leq l\leq r)$ are real numbers. As a consequence of this integral we establish a connection between the reciprocity relations…
In a previous it was shown that the Dedkind sums $12s(m,n)$ and $12s(x,n)$, $1\le m,x\le n$, $(m,n)=(x,n)=1$, are equal mod $\Z$ if, and only if, $(x-m)(xm-1)\equiv 0$ mod $n$. Here we determine the cardinality of numbers $x$ in the above range that satisfy this congruence for a given number $m$.
We count primitive lattices of rank $d$ inside $\mathbb{Z}^{n}$ as their covolume tends to infinity, with respect to certain parameters of such lattices. These parameters include, for example, the subsapce that a lattice spans, namely its projection to the Grassmannian; its homothety class; and its equivalence class modulo rescaling and rotation, often referred to as a shape. We add to a prior work of Schmidt by allowing sets in the spaces of parameters that are general enough to conclude joint equidistribution of these parameters. In addition to the primitive $d$-lattices themselves, we also …
Let $S(a,b)=12s(a,b)$, where $s(a,b)$ denotes the classical Dedekind sum. In a recent note E. Tsukerman gave a necessary and sufficient condition for $S(a_1,b)-S(a_2,b)\in 8\mathbb Z$. In the present paper we show that this condition is equivalent to $S(a_1,b)-S(a_2,b)\in 24\mathbb Z$, provided that $9\nmid b$. Tsukerman also obtained a congruence mod 8 for $bT(a,b)$, where $T(a,b)$ is the alternating sum of the partial quotients of the continued fraction expansion of $a/b$. We show that the respective congruence holds mod $24$ if $3\nmid b$ and mod $72$ if $3\mid b$.
The Dedekind eta function $η(τ)$ is defined by \[η(τ)=e^{πiτ/12}\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-e^{2πi nτ}\right),\quad\text{when}\;\text{Im}\,τ>0.\] It plays an important role in number theory, especially in the theory of modular forms. Its 24$^{\text{th}}$ power, $η(τ)^{24}$, is a modular form of weight 12 for the modular group $\text{PSL}\,(2,\mathbb{Z})$. Up to a constant, $η(τ)^{24}$ is equal to the modular discriminant $Δ(τ)$. In this note, we give an elementary proof of the transformation formula for the Dedekind eta function under the action of the modular group $\text{PSL}\,(2,\mathbb{Z})…
In [3] it was shown that the Dedekond sums $s(m_1,n)$ and $s(m_2,n)$ are equal only if $(m_1m_2-1)(m_1-m_2)\equiv 0$ mod $n$. Here we show that the latter condition is equivalent to $12s(m_1,n)-12s(m_2,n)\in \Z$. In addition, we determine, for a given number $m_1$, the number of integers $m_2$ in the range $0\le m_2<n$, $(m_1,m_2)=1$, such that $12s(m_1,n)-12s(m_2,n)\in \Z$, provided that $n$ is square-free.
We consider a family of character sums as multiplicative analogues of Kloosterman sums. Using Gauss sums, Jacobi sums and Deligne's bound for hyper-Kloosterman sums, we establish asymptotic formulae for any real (positive) moments of the above character sum as the character runs over all non-trivial multiplicative characters mod $p.$ Moreover, an arcsine law is also established as a consequence of the method of moments. The evaluations of these moments also allow us to obtain asymptotic formulae for moments of such character sums weighted by special $L$-values (at $1/2$ and $1$).
We consider the analogue of the quantum unique ergodicity conjecture for holomorphic Hecke eigenforms on compact arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces. We show that this conjecture follows from nontrivial bounds for Hecke eigenvalues summed over quadratic progressions. Our reduction provides an analogue for the compact case of a criterion established by Luo--Sarnak for the case of the non-compact modular surface. The novelty is that known proofs of such criteria have depended crucially upon Fourier expansions, which are not available in the compact case. Unconditionally, we establish a twisted varian…
Let $C$ be a cubic form with rational coefficients in $n$ variables, and let $h$ be the $h$-invariant of $C$. Let $L_1, \ldots, L_r$ be linear forms with real coefficients such that if $\boldsymbolα \in \mathbb{R}^r \setminus \{ \boldsymbol{0} \}$ then $\boldsymbolα \cdot \mathbf{L}$ is not a rational form. Assume that $h > 16 + 8 r$. Let $\boldsymbolτ \in \mathbb{R}^r$, and let $η$ be a positive real number. We prove an asymptotic formula for the weighted number of integer solutions $\mathbf{x} \in [-P,P]^n$ to the system $C(\mathbf{x}) = 0, \: |\mathbf{L}(\mathbf{x}) - \boldsymbolτ| < η$. If…
We solve an open problem proposed in the book ``Computing the continuous discretely" written by Matthias Beck and Sinai Robins. That is, we proposed a polynomial time algorithm for calculating Fourier-Dedekind sums. The algorithm is simple modular Barvinok's simplicial cone decomposition. It can be easily adapted into De Leora et. al.'s LattE package, which gives a nice implimentation of Barvinok's polynomial time algorithm.
Recently, the author defined multiple Dedekind zeta values [5] associated to a number K field and a cone C. These objects are number theoretic analogues of multiple zeta values. In this paper we prove that every multiple Dedekind zeta value over any number field K is a period of a mixed Tate motive. Moreover, if K is a totally real number field, then we can choose a cone C so that every multiple Dedekind zeta associated to the pair (K;C) is unramified over the ring of algebraic integers in K. In [7], the author proves similar statements in the special case of a real quadratic fields for a part…
We give an introduction to adelic mixing and its applications for mathematicians knowing about the mixing of the geodesic flow on hyperbolic surfaces. We focus on the example of the Hecke trees in the modular surface.
The paper is devoted to construction of some closed inductive sequence of models of the generalized second-order Dedekind theory of real numbers with exponentially increasing powers. These models are not isomorphic whereas all models of the standard second-order Dedekind theory are. The main idea in passing to generalized models is to consider instead of superstructures with the single common set-theoretical equality and the single common set-theoretical belonging superstructures with several generalized equalities and several generalized belongings for first and second orders. The basic tools…
For a Dedekind domain $\mathcal{O}$ and a rank two co-torsion module $M\subseteq \mathcal{O}^2$ with invariant factor ideals $\mathcal{L}\supseteq \mathcal{K}$ in $\mathcal{O}$, that is, $\frac{\mathcal{O}^2}{M}\cong \frac{\mathcal{O}}{\mathcal{L}}\oplus \frac{\mathcal{O}}{\mathcal{K}}$ we associate a new projective space invariant element in $\mathbb{PF}^1_{\mathcal{I}}$ where $\mathcal{I}$ is given by the ideal factorization $\mathcal{K} = \mathcal{L}\mathcal{I}$ in $\mathcal{O}$. This invariant element along with the invariant factor ideals determine the module $M$ completely as a subset of…
