The Dedekind eta function $η(τ)$ is defined by \[η(τ)=e^{πiτ/12}\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-e^{2πi nτ}\right),\quad\text{when}\;\text{Im}\,τ>0.\] It plays an important role in number theory, especially in the theory of modular forms. Its 24$^{\text{th}}$ power, $η(τ)^{24}$, is a modular form of weight 12 for the modular group $\text{PSL}\,(2,\mathbb{Z})$. Up to a constant, $η(τ)^{24}$ is equal to the modular discriminant $Δ(τ)$. In this note, we give an elementary proof of the transformation formula for the Dedekind eta function under the action of the modular group $\text{PSL}\,(2,\mathbb{Z})$. We start by giving a proof of the transformation formula \[η\left(-\frac{1}τ\right)=(-iτ)^{1/2}η(τ)\]using the Jacobi triple product identity and the Poisson summation formula. Both of these formulas have elementary proofs. After we establish some identities for the Dedekind sum, the transformation formula for $η(τ)$ under the transformation \[τ\mapsto \frac{aτ+b}{cτ+d}\]induced by a general element of the modular group $\text{PSL}\,(2,\mathbb{Z})$ is derived by induction.
Systematic choice of the Hecke eigenforms of half-integral weight is an interesting problem in the theory of modular forms. In this paper, we find all Dedekind-eta products of half-integral weight which are Hecke eigenforms up to weight 15/2 with varying levels. Proof is based on the Shimura lift.
In this paper we significantly extend Serre's table on the vanishing properties of Fourier coefficients of odd powers of the Dedekind eta function. We address several conjectures of Cohen and Strömberg and give a partial answer to a question of Ono. In the even-power case, we extend Lehmer's conjecture on the coefficients of the discriminant function $Δ$ to all non-CM-forms. All our results are supported with numerical data. For example all Fourier coefficients $a_9(n)$ of the $9$-th power of the Dedekind eta function are non-vanishing for $n \leq 10^{10}$. We also relate the non-vanishing of …

Let $E(z,s)$ be the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series for the modular group $SL(2,{\mathbb Z})$. The classical Kronecker limit formula shows that the second term in the Laurent expansion at $s=1$ of $E(z,s)$ is essentially the logarithm of the Dedekind eta function. This eta function is a weight $1/2$ modular form and Dedekind expressed its multiplier system in terms of Dedekind sums. Building on work of Goldstein, we extend these results from the modular group to more general Fuchsian groups $Γ$. The analogue of the eta function has a multiplier system that may be expressed in terms of a map …
We prove a q-series identity that generalises Macdonald's A_{2n}^{(2)} eta-function identity and the Rogers-Ramanujan identities. We conjecture our result to generalise even further to also include the Andrews-Gordon identities.
An integral power series is called lacunary modulo $M$ if almost all of its coefficients are divisible by $M$. Motivated by the parity problem for the partition function, $p(n)$, Gordon and Ono studied the generating functions for $t$-regular partitions, and determined conditions for when these functions are lacunary modulo powers of primes. We generalize their results in a number of ways by studying infinite products called Dedekind eta-quotients and generalized Dedekind eta-quotients. We then apply our results to the generating functions for the partition functions considered by Nekrasov, Ok…
Dedekind sums occur in the transformation behaviour of the logarithm of the Dedekind eta-function under substitutions from the modular group. In 1892, Dedekind showed a reciprocity relation for the Dedekind sums. Apostol generalized Dedekind sums by replacing the first Bernoulli function appearing in them by any Bernoulli functions and derived a reciprocity relation for the generalized Dedekind sums. In this paper, we consider poly-Dedekind sums which are obtained from the Dedekind sums by replacing the first Bernoulli function by any type 2 poly-Bernoulli functions of arbitrary indices and pr…
The classical Dedekind sums appear in the transformation behavior of the logarithm of the Dedekind eta-function under substitutions from the modular group. The Dedekind sums and their generalizations are defined in terms of Bernoulli functions and their generalizations, and are shown to satisfy some reciprocity relations. In contrast, Dedekind type DC (Daehee and Changhee) sums and their generalizations are defined in terms of Euler functions and their generalizations. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the poly-Dedekind type DC sums, which are obtained from the Dedekind type DC sums by…
This is a tutorial for using ETA, a MAPLE package for calculating with Dedekind's eta function. The ETA package is designed for proving eta-product identities using the valence formula for modular functions.
Atkin and Garvan introduced the functions $N_k(n)$ and $M_k(n)$, which denote the $k$-th moments of ranks and cranks in the theory of partitions. Let $e_{2r}(n)$ be the $n$-th Fourier coefficient of $E_{2r}(τ)/η(τ)$, where $E_{2r}(τ)$ is the classical Eisenstein series of weight $2r$ and $η(τ)$ is the Dedekind eta function. Via the theory of quasi-modular forms, we find that for $k \leq 5$, $N_k(n)$ and $M_k(n)$ can be expressed using $e_{2r}(n)$ ($2\leq r \leq k$), $p(n)$ and $N_2(n)$. For $k>5$, additional functions are required for such expressions. For $r\in \{2, 3, 4, 5, 7\}$, by studying…
The well-known fact that all elliptic curves are modular, proven by Wiles, Taylor, Breuil, Conrad and Diamond, leaves open the question whether there exists a 'nice' representation of the modular form associated to each elliptic curve. Here we provide explicit representations of the modular forms associated to certain Legendre form elliptic curves 2_E_1(λ) as linear combinations of quotients of Dedekind's eta-function. We also give congruences for some of the modular forms' coefficients in terms of Gaussian hypergeometric functions.
In this article, we obtain a transformation formula for the higher power of odd zeta values, which generalizes Ramanujan's formula for odd zeta values. We have also investigated many important applications, which in turn provide generalizations of the transformation formula of the Eisenstein series, Dedekind eta function etc.
Inspired by the multiplicative nature of the Ramanujan modular discriminant, Delta, we consider physical realizations of certain multiplicative products over the Dedekind eta-function in two parallel directions: the generating function of BPS states in certain heterotic orbifolds and elliptic K3 surfaces associated to congruence subgroups of the modular group. We show that they are, after string duality to type II, the same K3 surfaces admitting Nikulin automorphisms. In due course, we will present some identities arising from q-expansions as well as relations to the sporadic Mathieu group M24…
Two number fields are called arithmetically equivalent if they have the same Dedekind zeta function. In the 1970's Perlis showed that this is equivalent to the condition that for almost every rational prime $\ell$ the arithmetic type of $\ell$ is the same in each field. In the 1990's Perlis and Stuart gave an unexpected characterization for arithmetic equivalence; they showed that to be arithmetically equivalent it is enough for almost every prime $\ell$ to have the same number of prime factors in each field. Here, using an $\ell-p$ switch trick, we provide an elementary proof of that fact bas…
The main goal of this paper is to give a modular type representation for the infinite product $(1-x)(1-xq)(1-xq^2)(1-xq^3)...$. It is shown that this representation essentially contains the well-known modular formulae either for Dedekind's eta function, Jacobi theta function or for certain Lambert series. Thus a new and unified approach is outlined for the study of elliptic and modular functions and related series.
We prove asymptotic formulas for the complex coefficients of $(ζq;q)_\infty^{-1}$, where $ζ$ is a root of unity, and apply our results to determine secondary terms in the asymptotics for $p(a,b,n)$, the number of integer partitions of $n$ with largest part congruent $a$ modulo $b$. Our results imply that, as $n \to \infty$, the difference $p(a_1,b,n)-p(a_2,b,n)$ for $a_1 \neq a_2$ oscillates like a cosine, when renormalized by elementary functions. Moreover, we give asymptotic formulas for arbitrary linear combinations of $\{p(a,b,n)\}_{1 \leq a \leq b}$.
Let $φ(τ)=η((τ+1)/2)^2/\sqrt{2π}e^\frac{πi}{4}η(τ+1)$ where $η(τ)$ is the Dedekind eta-function. We show that if $τ_0$ is an imaginary quadratic number with $\mathrm{Im}(τ_0)>0$ and $m$ is an odd integer, then $\sqrt{m}φ(mτ_0)/φ(τ_0)$ is an algebraic integer dividing $\sqrt{m}$. This is a generalization of Theorem 4.4 given in [B. C. Berndt, H. H. Chan and L. C. Zhang, Ramanujan's remarkable product of theta-functions, Proc. Edinburgh Math. Soc. (2) 40 (1997), no. 3, 583-612]. On the other hand, let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field and $θ_K$ be an element of $K$ with $\mathrm{Im}(θ_K)>0$ wh…
String functions are important building blocks of characters of integrable highest modules over affine Kac--Moody algebras. Kac and Peterson computed string functions for affine Lie algebras of type $A_{1}^{(1)}$ in terms of Dedekind eta functions. We produce new relations between string functions by writing them as double-sums and then using certain symmetry relations. We evaluate the series using special double-sum formulas that express Hecke-type double-sums in terms of Appell--Lerch functions and theta functions, where we point out that Appell--Lerch functions are the building blocks of Ra…
We introduce a new type of multiple zeta functions, which we call bilateral zeta functions, analogous to the Barnes zeta functions. The bilateral zeta function is a periodic function and shares certain basic properties of Barnes zeta function. Especially, we prove that the bilateral zeta function has a nice Fourier series expansion and the Barnes zeta function can be expressed as a finite sum of bilateral zeta functions. By these properties of the bilateral zeta functions, We obtain simple proofs of some formulas, for example the reflection formula for the multiple gamma function, the inversio…
Let $K$ be an algebraic function field of one variable with constant field $k$ and let $C$ be the Dedekind domain consisting of all those elements of $K$ which are integral outside a fixed place $\infty$ of $K$. When $k$ is finite the group $GL_2(C)$ plays a central role in the theory of Drinfeld modular curves analagous to that played by $SL_2(Z)$ in the classical theory of modular forms. When $k$ is finite (resp. infinite) we refer to a group $GL_2(C)$ as an arithmetic (resp. non-arithmetic) Drinfeld modular group. Associated with $GL_2(C)$ is its Bruhat-Tits tree, $T$. The structure of the …
Building on work of Hardy and Ramanujan, Rademacher proved a well-known formula for the values of the ordinary partition function $p(n)$. More recently, Bruinier and Ono obtained an algebraic formula for these values. Here we study the smallest parts function introduced by Andrews; $\operatorname{spt}(n)$ counts the number of smallest parts in the partitions of $n$. The generating function for $\operatorname{spt}(n)$ forms a component of a natural mock modular form of weight $3/2$ whose shadow is the Dedekind eta function. Using automorphic methods (in particular the theta lift of Bruinier and…
For a positive integer $N$, let $\mathscr{C}_N(\mathbb{Q})$ be the rational cuspidal subgroup of $J_0(N)$ and $\mathscr{C}(N)$ be the rational cuspidal divisor class group of $X_0(N)$, which are both subgroups of the rational torsion subgroup of $J_0(N)$. We prove that two groups $\mathscr{C}_N(\mathbb{Q})$ and $\mathscr{C}(N)$ are equal when $N=p^2M$ for any prime $p$ and any squarefree integer $M$. To achieve this we show that all modular units on $X_0(N)$ can be written as products of certain functions $F_{m, h}$, which are constructed from generalized Dedekind eta functions. Also, we deter…
Let $q=e^{2πiτ}$, $\Imτ>0$, $x=e^{2πiξ}\in\CC$ and $(x;q)_\infty=\prod_{n\ge 0}(1-xq^n)$. Let $(q,x)\mapsto(q^*,ι_q x)$ be the classical modular substitution given by $q^*=e^{-2πi/τ}$ and $ι_q x=e^{2πiξ/τ}$. The main goal of this Note is to study the "modular behaviour" of the infinite product $(x;q)_\infty$, this means, to compare the function defined by $(x;q)_\infty$ with that given by $(ι_q x;q^*)_\infty$. Inspired by the work of Stieltjes on some semi-convergent series, we are led to a "closed" analytic formula for $(x;q)_\infty$ by means of the dilogarithm combined with a Laplace type in…
