Building on work of Hardy and Ramanujan, Rademacher proved a well-known formula for the values of the ordinary partition function $p(n)$. More recently, Bruinier and Ono obtained an algebraic formula for these values. Here we study the smallest parts function introduced by Andrews; $\operatorname{spt}(n)$ counts the number of smallest parts in the partitions of $n$. The generating function for $\operatorname{spt}(n)$ forms a component of a natural mock modular form of weight $3/2$ whose shadow is the Dedekind eta function. Using automorphic methods (in particular the theta lift of Bruinier and Funke), we obtain an exact formula and an algebraic formula for its values. In contrast with the case of $p(n)$, the convergence of our expression is non-trivial, and requires power savings estimates for weighted sums of Kloosterman sums for a multiplier in weight $1/2$. These are proved with spectral methods (following an argument of Goldfeld and Sarnak).
While the distribution of the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function constitutes a central theme in Mathematics, nothing is known about the algebraic nature of these non-trivial zeros. In this article, we study the transcendental nature of sums of the form $$ \sum_{ρ} R(ρ) x^ρ, $$ where the sum is over the non-trivial zeros $ρ$ of $ζ(s)$, $R(x) \in \overline{\Q}(x) $ is a rational function over algebraic numbers and $x >0$ is a real algebraic number. In particular, we show that the function $$ f(x) = \sum_{ρ} \frac{x^ρ}ρ $$ has infinitely many zeros in $(1, \infty)$, at most one of whi…
We develop a theory of enlarged mixed Shimura varieties, putting the universal vectorial bi-extension defined by Coleman into this framework to study some functional transcendental results of Ax type. We study their bi-algebraic systems, formulate the Ax-Schanuel conjecture and explain its relation with the Ax logarithmique theorem and the Ax-Lindemann theorem which we shall prove. We also prove the whole Ax-Schanuel conjecture for the unipotent part. All these bi-algebraic and transcendental results generalize their counterparts for mixed Shimura varieties. In the end we briefly discuss about…
E-functions are entire functions with algebraic Taylor coefficients satisfying certain arithmetic conditions, and which are also solutions of linear differential equations with rational functions coefficients. They were introduced by Siegel in 1929 to generalize Diophantine properties of the exponential function, and studied further by Shidlovskii in 1956. The celebrated Siegel-Shidlovskii Theorem deals with the algebraic (in)dependence of values at algebraic points of E-functions solutions of a differential system. However, somewhat paradoxically, this deep result may fail to decide whether a…
It is well known that value at a non-zero algebraic number of each of the functions $e^{x}, \ln x, \sin x, \cos x, \tan x, \csc x, \sec x, \cot x, \sinh x,$ $ \cosh x,$ $ \tanh x,$ and $\coth x$ is transcendental number (see Theorem 9.11 of \cite{N}). In the work, we show that for any one of the above mentioned functions, $f(x)$, and for a polynomial $g(x)$ with rational coefficients the zero, if any, of the equation $f(x)=g(x)$ is a transcendental number. We also show that if $f(x)$ and $g(x)$ are polynomials with rational coefficients, then a zero of the equation $e^{f(x)}=g(x)$ is a transce…
Infinite products associated with the $\pm 1$ Thue-Morse sequence whose value is rational or algebraic irrational have been studied by several authors. In this short note we prove three new infinite product identities involving $π$, $\sqrt{2}$, and the $\pm 1$ Thue-Morse sequence, building on a result by Allouche, Riasat, and Shallit. We then use our method to find a new expression for a product appearing within the context of the Flajolet-Martin constant.
The transcendental Hodge lattice of a projective manifold $M$ is the smallest Hodge substructure in $p$-th cohomology which contains all holomorphic $p$-forms. We prove that the direct sum of all transcendental Hodge lattices has a natural algebraic structure, and compute this algebra explicitly for a hyperkahler manifold. As an application, we obtain a theorem about dimension of a compact torus $T$ admitting a symplectic embedding to a hyperkahler manifold $M$. If $M$ is generic in a $d$-dimensional family of deformations, then $\dim T\geq 2^{[(d+1)/2]}$.
If a machine did it, it is probably transcendental (even $p$-adically)

We formulate and prove a log-algebraicity theorem for arbitrary rank Drinfeld modules defined over the polynomial ring F_q[theta]. This generalizes results of Anderson for the rank one case. As an application we show that certain special values of Goss L-functions are linear forms in Drinfeld logarithms and are transcendental.
We count algebraic points of bounded height and degree on the graphs of certain functions analytic on the unit disk, obtaining a bound which is polynomial in the degree and in the logarithm of the multiplicative height. We combine this work with p-adic methods to obtain a lower bound of the form $cD^{n/4 - \varepsilon}$ on the degree of the splitting field of $P^{\circ n}(z)=P^{\circ n}(α)$, where $P$ is a polynomial of degree $D\geq 2$ over a number field, $P^{\circ n}$ is its $n$-th iterate and $c$ depends effectively on $P, α$ and $\varepsilon$. Our $c$ is positive for each algebraic $α$ fo…
This note deals with some effective results in Mahler's method. In a recent work, we used a theorem of Philippon to show that given a Mahler function $f(z)$ in ${\bf k}\{z\}$, where ${\bf k}$ denotes a number field, and an algebraic number $α$ in the domain of holomorphy of $f$, the number $f(α)$ is either transcendental or belongs to ${\bf k}(α)$. We describe here an effective procedure to decide if such a number is transcendental or not. More generally, given several Mahler functions $f_1(z),\cdots,f_r(z)$ and an algebraic number $α$ in the domain of holomorphy of these functions, we show ho…
We show that the values of a certain family of weakly holomorphic modular functions at points in the divisors of any meromorphic modular form with algebraic Fourier coefficients are algebraic. We use this to extend the classical result of Schneider by proving that zeros or poles of any non-zero meromorphic modular form with algebraic Fourier coefficients are either transcendental or imaginary quadratic irrational.
The main purpose of this article is to provide new results on algebraic independence of values of Mahler functions and their generalizations. Simultaneously, we establish new measures of algebraic independence for these values. Among the other things, we provide a measure of algebraic independence for values of Mahler's functions at complex transcendental points, a result of type which has never appeared in the literature in the past. As an example of application of our new measures of algebraic independence, we prove that a Mahler number does not belong to the class $U$ in Mahler's classifica…
Let $\wp $ be a Weierstrass $\wp $-function with algebraic $g_2$ and $g_3$, which has a non-zero real period $ω$. We show that at least one of $πr$ and $\wp(ωr)$ is transcendental for any non-zero real number $r$.
It is proved that for all but a finite set of the square-free integers $d$ the value of transcendental function $\exp~(2πi ~x+\log\log y)$ is an algebraic number for the algebraic arguments $x$ and $y$ lying in a real quadratic field of discriminant $d$. Such a value generates the Hilbert class field of the imaginary quadratic field of discriminant $-d$.
We give a partial answer to a question attributed to Chris Miller on algebraic values of certain transcendental functions of order less than one. We obtain C(logH)^n bounds for the number of algebraic points of height at most H on certain subsets of the graphs of such functions. The constant C and exponent n depend on certain data associated with the functions and can be effectively computed from them.
Let $j(z)$ be the modular $j$-invariant function. Let $τ$ be an algebraic number in the complex upper half plane $\mathbb{H}$. It was proved by Schneider and Siegel that if $τ$ is not a CM point, i.e., $[\mathbb{Q}(τ):\mathbb{Q}]\neq2$, then $j(τ)$ is transcendental. Let $f$ be a harmonic weak Maass form of weight $0$ on $Γ_0(N)$. In this paper, we consider an extension of the results of Schneider and Siegel to a family of values of $f$ on Hecke orbits of $τ$. For a positive integer $m$, let $T_m$ denote the $m$-th Hecke operator. Suppose that the coefficients of the principal part of $f$ at t…
We give a complete answer to the analogue of Grothendieck conjecture on p-curvatures for q-difference equations defined over K(x), where K is any finitely generated extension of Q and q\in K can be either a transcendental or an algebraic number. This generalizes the results in [DV02], proved under the assumption that K is a number field and q an algebraic number. The results also hold for a field K which is a finite extension of a purely transcendental extension k(q) of a perfect field k. In Part 3, we consider two Galois groups attached to a q-difference module M over K(x): (1) the intrinsic …
We prove function field versions of the Zilber-Pink conjectures for varieties supporting a variation of Hodge structures. A form of these results for Shimura varieties in the context of unlikely intersections is the following. Let $S$ be a connected pure Shimura variety with a fixed quasiprojective embedding. We show that there is an explicitly computable function $B$ of two natural number arguments so that for any field extension $K$ of the complex numbers and Hodge generic irreducible proper subvariety $X \subsetneq S_K$, the set of nonconstant points in the intersection of $X$ with the unio…
Let $C$ be an affine plane curve. We consider additive functions $f: K\rightarrow K$ for which $f(x)f(y)=0$, whenever $(x,y)\in C$. We show that if $K=\mathbb{R}$ and $C$ is the hyperbola with defining equation $xy=1$, then there exist nonzero additive functions with this property. Moreover, we show that such a nonzero $f$ exists for a field $K$ if and only if $K$ is transcendental over $\mathbb{Q}$ or over $\mathbb{F}_p$, the finite field with $p$ elements. We also consider the general question when $K$ is a finite field. We show that if the degree of the curve $C$ is large enough compared to…
