We give a new proof of Fatou's theorem: {\em if an algebraic function has a power series expansion with bounded integer coefficients, then it must be a rational function.} This result is applied to show that for any non--trivial completely multiplicative function from $\mathbb{N}$ to $\{-1,1\}$, the series $\sum_{n=1}^\infty f(n)z^n$ is transcendental over $\mathbb{Z}[z]$; in particular, $\sum_{n=1}^\infty λ(n)z^n$ is transcendental, where $λ$ is Liouville's function. The transcendence of $\sum_{n=1}^\infty μ(n)z^n$ is also proved.
In the present paper and as an application of Roth's theorem concerning the rational approximation of algebraic numbers, we give a sufficient condition that will assure us that a series of positive rational terms is a transcendental number. With the same conditions, we establish a transcendental measure of $ \sum_{n = 1}^{\infty} 1/a_n$.
Euler gave recipes for converting alternating series of two types, I and II, into equivalent continued fractions, i.e., ones whose convergents equal the partial sums. A condition we prove for irrationality of a continued fraction then allows easy proofs that $e,\sin1$, and the primorial constant are irrational. Our main result is that, if a series of type II is equivalent to a simple continued fraction, then the sum is transcendental and its irrationality measure exceeds $2$. We construct all $\aleph_0^{\aleph_0}=\mathfrak{c}$ such series and recover the transcendence of the Davison--Shallit a…
Let $b$ be an algebraic number with $|b|>1$ and $\mathcal{H}$ a finite set of algebraic numbers. We study the transcendence of numbers of the form $\sum_{n=0}^\infty \frac{a_n}{b^n}$ where $a_n \in \mathcal{H}$ for all $n\in\mathbb{N}$. We assume that the sequence $(a_n)_{n=0}^\infty$ is generated by coding the orbit of a point under an irrational rotation of the unit circle. In particular, this assumption holds whenever the sequence is Sturmian. Our main result shows that all numbers of the above form are transcendental. We moreover give sufficient conditions for a finite set of such numbers …
We extend some results of Gun, Murty, and Rath on elliptic modular forms. We take ANY Fuchsian triangle group with a cusp and look at power series expansions in a natural parameter around that cusp. Consider the automorphic forms for such a triangle group whose power series expansions in the natural parameter have algebraic coefficients. We show that the zeros of such forms are either transcendental or are "CM." By "CM," we mean they correspond to abelian varieties with complex multiplication. This result is the first of its kind in the case of non-arithmetic groups.
In a recent work, Gun and co-workers have proposed that $\,\sum_{n=-\infty}^{\infty}{(n+α)^{-k}}\,$ is a transcendental number for all integer $\,k$, $k > 1$, and $\,α\in \mathbb{Q} \backslash \mathbb{Z}$. Here in this work, this proposition is shown to be \emph{false} whenever $\,k\,$ is odd and $\,α\,$ is a half-integer. It is also shown that these are the only counterexamples, which allows for a correct reformulation of the original proposition. This leads to a theorem yielding a closed-form expression for the summation of that series, which determines its arithmetic nature. The result is t…
Let $θ$ and $ρ$ be real numbers with $0 \le θ, ρ< 1$ and $θ$ irrational. We show that the Hecke-Mahler series $$ F_{θ, ρ} (z_1, z_2) = \sum_{k_1 \ge 1} \, \sum_{k_2 = 1}^{\lfloor k_1 θ+ ρ\rfloor} \, z_1^{k_1} z_2^{k_2}, $$ where $\lfloor \cdot \rfloor$ denotes the integer part function, takes transcendental values at any algebraic point $(β, α)$ with $0 < |β|, |βα^θ| < 1$. This extends earlier results of Mahler (1929) and Loxton and van der Poorten (1977), who settled the case $ρ=0$. Furthermore, for positive integers $b$ and $a$, with $b \ge 2$ and $a$ congruent to $1$ modulo $b-1$, we give t…
We survey some key developments in the theory of transcendental numbers, paying special attention to Nesterenko's theorem on values of Eisenstein series and emphasizing its underlying geometric aspects. We finish with a brief discussion on periods and related open problems.

In this paper, we give a new proof and an extension of the following result of Bézivin. Let $f:\B{N}\to K$ be a multiplicative function taking values in a field $K$ of characteristic 0 and write $F(z)=\sum_{n\geq 1} f(n)z^n\in K[[z]]$ for its generating series. Suppose that $F(z)$ is algebraic over $K(z)$. Then either there is a natural number $k$ and a periodic multiplicative function $χ(n)$ such that $f(n)=n^k χ(n)$ for all $n$, or $f(n)$ is eventually zero. In particular, $F(z)$ is either transcendental or rational. For $K=\B{C}$, we also prove that if $F(z)$ is a $D$-finite generating seri…
A comprehensive study of the generalized Lambert series $\displaystyle\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{n^{N-2h}\exp{(-an^{N}x)}}{1-\exp{(-n^{N}x)}}, 0<a\leq 1,\ x>0$, $N\in\mathbb{N}$ and $h\in\mathbb{Z}$, is undertaken. Two of the general transformations of this series that we obtain here lead to two-parameter generalizations of Ramanujan's famous formula for $ζ(2m+1)$, $m>0$ and the transformation formula for $\logη(z)$. Numerous important special cases of our transformations are derived. An identity relating $ζ(2N+1), ζ(4N+1),\cdots, ζ(2Nm+1)$ is obtained for $N$ odd and $m\in\mathbb{N}$. Certain t…
{\em The Liouville number}, denoted $l$, is defined by $$l:=0.100101011101101111100...,$$ where the $n$th bit is given by ${1/2}(1+\gl(n))$; here $\gl$ is the Liouville function for the parity of prime divisors of $n$. Presumably the Liouville number is transcendental, though at present, a proof is unattainable. Similarly, define {\em the Gaussian Liouville number} by $$γ:=0.110110011100100111011...$$ where the $n$th bit reflects the parity of the number of rational Gaussian primes dividing $n$, 1 for even and 0 for odd. In this paper, we prove that the Gaussian Liouville number and its relati…
Let $F_1=1,F_2=1,\ldots$ be the Fibonacci sequence. Motivated by the identity $\displaystyle\sum_{k=0}^{\infty}\frac{1}{F_{2^k}}=\frac{7-\sqrt{5}}{2}$, Erdös and Graham asked whether $\displaystyle\sum_{k=1}^{\infty}\frac{1}{F_{n_k}}$ is irrational for any sequence of positive integers $n_1,n_2,\ldots$ with $\frac{n_{k+1}}{n_k}\geq c>1$. We resolve the transcendence counterpart of their question: as a special case of our main theorem, we have that $\displaystyle\sum_{k=1}^{\infty}\frac{1}{F_{n_k}}$ is transcendental when $\frac{n_{k+1}}{n_k}\geq c>2$. The bound $c>2$ is best possible thanks to…
In this article, first we generalize the Thue-Morse sequence $(a(n))_{n=0}^\infty$ (the generalized Thue-Morse sequences) by a cyclic permutation and $k$ -adic expansion of natural numbers, and consider the necessary-sufficient condition that it is non-periodic. Moreover we will show that, if the generalized Thue-Morse sequence is not periodic, then all equally spaced subsequences $(a(N+nl))_{n=0}^\infty$ (where $N \ge 0$ and $l >0$) of the generalized Thue-Morse sequences are not periodic. Finally we apply the criterion of [ABL], [Bu$1$] on transcendental numbers, to find that , for a non per…
The purpose of this paper is to combine classical methods from transcendental number theory with the technique of restriction to real scalars. We develop a conceptual approach relating transcendence properties of algebraic groups to results about the existence of homomorphisms to group varieties over real fields. Our approach gives a new perspective on Mazur's conjecture on the topology of rational points. We shall reformulate and generalize Mazur's problem in the light of transcendence theory and shall derive conclusions in the direction of the conjecture. Next to these new theoretical insigh…

Anderson generating functions are generating series for division values of points on Drinfeld modules, and they serve as important tools for capturing periods, quasi-periods, and logarithms. They have been fundamental in recent work on special values of positive characteristic L-series and in transcendence and algebraic independence problems. In the present paper we investigate techniques for expressing Anderson generating functions in terms of the defining polynomial of the Drinfeld module and determine new formulas for periods and quasi-periods.
For a number field $K$, let $ζ_{K}(s)$ be the Dedekind zeta function associated to $K$. In this note, we study non-vanishing and transcendence of $ζ_{K}$ as well as its derivative $ζ_{K}'$ at $s= 1/2$. En route, we strengthen a result proved by Ram Murty and Tanabe [On the nature of $e^γ$ and non-vanishing of $L$-series at $s= 1/2$, J. Number Theory 161 (2016) 444-456].
In this survey, we present five different proofs for the transcendence of Kempner's number, defined by the infinite series $\sum_{n=0}^{\infty} \frac{1}{2^{2^n}}$. We take the opportunity to mention some interesting ideas and methods that are used for proving deeper results. We outline proofs for some of these results and also point out references where the reader can find all the details.
Decimal expansions of classical constants such as $\sqrt2$, $π$ and $ζ(3)$ have long been a source of difficult questions. In the case of Laurent series with coefficients in a finite field, where no carry-over difficulties appear, the situation seems to be simplified and drastically different. On the other hand, Carlitz introduced analogs of real numbers such as $π$, $e$ or $ζ(3)$. Hence, it became reasonable to enquire how "complex" the Laurent representation of these "numbers" is. In this paper we prove that the inverse of Carlitz's analog of $π$, $Π_q$, has in general a linear complexity, e…
I give a model-theoretic setting for the modular $j$ function and its derivatives. These structures, here called $j$-fields, provide an adequate setting for interpreting the Ax-Schanuel theorem for $j$ (Pila-Tsimerman 2015). Following the ideas of M. Bays, J. Kirby and A.J. Wilkie for exponential fields, I prove a generic transcendence property for the $j$ function.
Let $F_n$ and $L_n$ be the Fibonacci and Lucas numbers, respectively. Four corresponding zeta functions in $s$ are defined by \[ζ_F(s) \,:=\, \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \frac{1}{F_n^s}\,,\quad ζ_F^*(s) \,:=\,\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \frac{{(-1)}^{n+1}}{F_n^s}\,,\quad ζ_L(s) \,:=\, \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \frac{1}{L_n^s}\,,\quad ζ_L^*(s) \,:=\, \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \frac{{(-1)}^{n+1}}{L_n^s} \,.\] For positive integers $s$ the transcendence of these values is known as well as algebraic independence or dependence results for sets of these numbers. In this paper, we investigate linear forms in the above zeta func…
We prove the irrationality of some factorial series. To do so we combine methods from elementary and analytic number theory with methods from the theory of uniform distribution.
Denote by $σ_k(n)$ the sum of the $k$-th powers of the divisors of $n$, and let $S_k=\sum_{n\geq 1}\frac{σ_k(n)}{n!}$. We prove that Schinzel's conjecture H implies that $S_k$ is irrational, and give an unconditional proof for the case $k=3$.
It is well known that all numbers that are normal of order $k$ in base $b$ are also normal of all orders less than $k$. Another basic fact is that every real number is normal in base $b$ if and only if it is simply normal in base $b^k$ for all $k$. This may be interpreted to mean that a number is normal in base $b$ if and only if all blocks of digits occur with the desired relative frequency along every infinite arithmetic progression. We reinterpret these theorems for the $Q$-Cantor series expansions and show that they are no longer true in a particularly strong way. The main theoretical resu…
The aim of this paper is to define some new number-theoretic functions including necklaces polynomials and the numbers of special words such as Lyndon words. By using Dirichlet convolution formula with well-known number-theoretic functions, we derive some new identities and relations associated with Dirichlet series, Lambert series, and also the family of zeta functions including the Riemann zeta functions and polylogarithm functions. By using analytic (meromorphic) continuation of zeta functions, we also derive identities and formulas including Bernoulli numbers and Apostol-Bernoulli numbers.…
The finite Dirichlet series from the title are defined by the condition that they vanish at as many initial zeroes of the zeta function as possible. It turned out that such series can produce extremely good approximations to the values of Riemann's zeta function inside the critical strip. In addition, the coefficients of these series have remarkable number-theoretical properties discovered in large scale high accuracy numerical experiments. So far no theoretical explanation to the observed phenomena was found.
We explore in depth the number theoretic and statistical properties of certain sets of numbers arising from their Cantor series expansions. As a direct consequence of our main theorem we deduce numerous new results as well as strengthen known ones.
Let $ Γ$ be a congruence subgroup of $ \mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb Z) $. Using Poincaré series of $ K $-finite matrix coefficients of integrable discrete series representations of $ \mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb R) $, we construct a spanning set for the space $ S_m(Γ) $ of Siegel cusp forms of weight $ m\in\mathbb Z_{>2n} $. We prove the non-vanishing of certain elements of this spanning set using Muić's integral non-vanishing criterion for Poincaré series on locally compact Hausdorff groups. Moreover, using the representation theory of $ \mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb R) $, we study the Petersson inner pro…
We use sums over integer compositions analogous to generating functions in partition theory, to express certain partition enumeration functions as sums over compositions into parts that are $k$-gonal numbers; our proofs employ Ramanujan's theta functions. We explore applications to lacunary $q$-series, and to a new class of composition-theoretic Dirichlet series.
The $GL_2$ Poincaré series giving the subconvexity results of Diaconu and Garrett is the solution to an automorphic partial differential equation, constructed by winding-up the solution to the corresponding differential equation on the free space. Generalizing this approach allows design of higher rank Poincaré series with specific number theoretic applications in mind: a Poincaré series for producing an explicit formula for the number of lattice points in an expanding region in a symmetric space, a Poincaré series producing moments of $GL_n \times GL_n$ L-functions, and a Poincaré series desi…
Suppose that $(P,Q) \in \mathbb{N}_2^{\mathbb{N}} \times \mathbb{N}_2^{\mathbb{N}}$ and $x=E_0.E_1E_2\cdots$ is the $P$-Cantor series expansion of $x \in \mathbb{R}$. We define $ψ_{P,Q}(x):=\sum_{n=1}^\infty \frac {\min(E_n,q_n-1)} {q_1 \cdots q_n}$. The functions $ψ_{P,Q}$ are used to construct many pathological examples of normal numbers. These constructions are used to give the complete containment relation between the sets of $Q$-normal, $Q$-ratio normal, and $Q$-distribution normal numbers and their pairwise intersections for fully divergent $Q$ that are infinite in limit. We analyze the …
We derive asymptotic bounds for the ordinary generating functions of several classical arithmetic functions, including the Moebius, Liouville, and von Mangoldt functions. The estimates result from the Korobov-Vinogradov zero-free region for the Riemann zeta-function, and are sharper than those obtained by Abelian theorems from bounds for the summatory functions.
In earlier work generalizing a 1977 theorem of Alladi, the authors proved a partition-theoretic formula to compute arithmetic densities of certain subsets of the positive integers $\mathbb N$ as limiting values of $q$-series as $q\to ζ$ a root of unity (instead of using the usual Dirichlet series to compute densities), replacing multiplicative structures of $\mathbb N$ by analogous structures in the integer partitions $\mathcal P$. In recent work, Wang obtains a wide generalization of Alladi's original theorem, in which arithmetic densities of subsets of prime numbers are computed as values of…
For positive integers $1\leq i\leq k$, we consider the arithmetic properties of quotients of Wronskians in certain normalizations of the Andrews-Gordon $q$-series $$ \prod_{1\leq n\not \equiv 0,\pm i\pmod{2k+1}}\frac{1}{1-q^n}. $$ This study is motivated by their appearance in conformal field theory, where these series are essentially the irreducible characters of $(2,2k+1)$ Virasoro minimal models. We determine the vanishing of such Wronskians, a result whose proof reveals many partition identities. For example, if $P_{b}(a;n)$ denotes the number of partitions of $n$ into parts which are not …
Certain triples of power series, considered by I. Macdonald, give a natural framework for many combinatorial and number theoretic sequences, such as the Stirling, Bernoulli and harmonic numbers and partitions of different kinds. The power series in such a triple are closely linked by identities coming from the theory of symmetric functions. We extend the work of Z-H. Sun, who developed similar ideas, and Macdonald, revealing more of the structure of these triples. De Moivre polynomials play a key role in this study.
A generalization of a beautiful $q$-series identity found in the unorganized portion of Ramanujan's second and third notebooks is obtained. As a consequence, we derive a new three-parameter identity which is a rich source of partition-theoretic information. In particular, we use this identity to obtain a generalization of a recent result of Andrews, Garvan and Liang, which itself generalizes the famous result of Fokkink, Fokkink and Wang. This three-parameter identity also leads to several new weighted partition identities as well as a natural proof of a recent result of Garvan. This natural p…
We prove that the number of natural exact covering systems of cardinality $k$ is equal to the coefficient of $x^k$ in the reversion of the power series $\sum_{k \ge 1} μ(k) x^k$, where $μ(k)$ is the usual number-theoretic Möbius function. Using this result, we deduce an asymptotic expression for the number of such systems.
