Let $\wp $ be a Weierstrass $\wp $-function with algebraic $g_2$ and $g_3$, which has a non-zero real period $ω$. We show that at least one of $πr$ and $\wp(ωr)$ is transcendental for any non-zero real number $r$.
We develop general criteria that ensure that any non-zero solution of a given second-order difference equation is differentially transcendental, which apply uniformly in particular cases of interest, such as shift difference equations, q-dilation difference equations, Mahler difference equations, and elliptic difference equations. These criteria are obtained as an application of differential Galois theory for difference equations. We apply our criteria to prove a new result to the effect that most elliptic hypergeometric functions are differentially transcendental.
We extend some results of Gun, Murty, and Rath on elliptic modular forms. We take ANY Fuchsian triangle group with a cusp and look at power series expansions in a natural parameter around that cusp. Consider the automorphic forms for such a triangle group whose power series expansions in the natural parameter have algebraic coefficients. We show that the zeros of such forms are either transcendental or are "CM." By "CM," we mean they correspond to abelian varieties with complex multiplication. This result is the first of its kind in the case of non-arithmetic groups.
It is a classical fact that the elliptic modular functions satisfies an algebraic differential equation of order 3, and none of lower order. We show how this generalizes to Siegel modular functions of arbitrary degree. The key idea is that the partial differential equations they satisfy are governed by Gauss--Manin connections, whose monodromy groups are well-known. Modular theta functions provide a concrete interpretation of our result, and we study their differential properties in detail in the case of degree 2.
This paper is concerned with difference equations on elliptic curves. We establish some general properties of the difference Galois groups of equations of order two, and give applications to the calculation of some difference Galois groups. For instance, our results combined with a result from transcendence theory due to Schneider allow us to identify a large class of discrete Lamé equations with difference Galois group $\operatorname{GL}_{2}(\mathbb C)$.
We study the p-adic valuation of the values of normalised Hecke eigenforms attached to non-isotrivial elliptic curves defined over function fields of transcendence degree one over finite fields of characteristic p. We derive upper bounds on the smallest attained valuation in terms of the minimal discriminant under a certain assumption on the function field and provide examples to show that our estimates are optimal. As an application of our results we also prove the analogue of the degree conjecture unconditionally for strong Weil curves with square-free conductor defined over function fields …
The arithmetic nature of values of some functions of a single variable, particularly, $\sin{z}$, $\cos{z}$, $\sinh{z}$, $\cosh{z}$, $e^z$, and $\ln{z}$, is a relevant topic in number theory. For instance, all those functions return transcendental values for all non-zero algebraic values of $z$ ($z \ne 1$ in the case of $\ln{z}$). On the other hand, not even an irrationality proof is known for some numbers like $\,e^e$, $\,π^e$, $\,π^π$, $\,\lnπ$, $\,π+ e\,$ and $\,π\, e$, though it is well-known that at least one of the last two numbers is irrational. In this note, I first derive a more genera…
This is the first part of a work devoted to the study of linear Mahler systems in several variables from the perspective of transcendence and algebraic independence. We prove two main results concerning systems that are regular singular at the origin. Our interest in Mahler's method comes from the possible applications of these results to old problems involving automata theory and which concern the expansion of both natural numbers and real numbers in integer bases. In particular, problems which involve finite automata and base change. Such applications are studied in Part II of this work.
In 1927, Artin conjectured that any integer other than -1 or a perfect square generates the multiplicative group $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}^\times$ for infinitely many $p$. In \cite{MoSt}, Moree and Stevenhagen considered a two-variable version of this problem, and proved a positive density result conditionally to the generalized Riemann Hypothesis by adapting a proof by Hooley for the original conjecture (\cite{Ho}). In this article, we prove an unconditional lower bound for this two-variable problem. In particular, we prove an estimate for the number of distinct primes which divide one of the f…
One of the main open problems regarding decidability of the existential theory of rings is the analogue of Hilbert's Tenth Problem (HTP) for the ring of entire holomorphic functions in one variable. In the direction of a negative solution, we prove unsolvability of HTP for rings of exponential polynomials. This provides the first known case of HTP for a ring of entire holomorphic functions in one variable strictly containing the polynomials. The technique of proof consists of an interaction between Arithmetic, Analysis, Logic, and Functional Transcendence.
For any rank 2 Drinfeld module rho defined over an algebraic function field, we consider its period matrix P, which is analogous to the period matrix of an elliptic curve defined over a number field. Suppose that the characteristic of F_q is odd and rho is without complex multiplication. We show that the transcendence degree of the field generated by the entries of P over F_q(theta) is 4. As a consequence, we show also the algebraic independence of Drinfeld logarithms of algebraic functions which are linearly independent over F_q(theta).
We establish several results towards the two-variable main conjecture of Iwasawa theory for elliptic curves without complex multiplication over imaginary quadratic fields, namely (i) the existence of an appropriate p-adic L-function, building on works of Hida and Perrin-Riou, (ii) the basic structure theory of the dual Selmer group, following works of Coates, Hachimori-Venjakob, et al., and (iii) the implications of dihedral or anticyclotomic main conjectures with basechange. The result of (i) is deduced from the construction of Hida and Perrin-Riou, which in particular is seen to give a bound…
This is the second part of a work devoted to the study of linear Mahler systems in several variables from the perspective of transcendence and algebraic independence. From the lifting theorem obtained in the first part, we first derive a general result, showing that Mahler functions in several variables, associated with transformations having multiplicatively dependent spectral radii, take algebraic independent values at algebraic points provided that these points are sufficiently independent. Then, we focus on applications of this result and of the two main results of Part I of this work. Our…
A result of Bleher, Chinburg, Greenberg, Kakde, Pappas, Sharifi and Taylor has initiated the topic of higher codimension Iwasawa theory. As a generalization of the classical Iwasawa main conjecture, they prove a relationship between analytic objects (a pair of Katz's $2$-variable $p$-adic $L$-functions) and algebraic objects (two "everywhere unramified'' Iwasawa modules) involving codimension two cycles in a $2$-variable Iwasawa algebra. We prove a result by considering the restriction to an imaginary quadratic field $K$ (where an odd prime $p$ splits) of an elliptic curve $E$, defined over $\…
We develop a theory of linear Mahler systems in several variables from the perspective of transcendence and algebraic independence, which also includes the possibility of dealing with several systems associated with sufficiently independent matrix transformations. Our main results go far beyond the existing literature, also surpassing those of two unpublished preprints the authors made available on the arXiv in 2018. The main new feature is that they apply now without any restriction on the matrices defining the corresponding Mahler systems. As a consequence, we settle several problems concern…
We analyze the point decomposition problem (PDP) in binary elliptic curves. It is known that PDP in an elliptic curve group can be reduced to solving a particular system of multivariate non-linear system of equations derived from the so called Semaev summation polynomials. We modify the underlying system of equations by introducing some auxiliary variables. We argue that the trade-off between lowering the degree of Semaev polynomials and increasing the number of variables is worth.
We study two types of dynamical extensions of Lucas sequences and give elliptic solutions for them. The first type concerns a level-dependent (or discrete time-dependent) version involving commuting variables. We show that a nice solution for this system is given by elliptic numbers. The second type involves a non-commutative version of Lucas sequences which defines the non-commutative (or abstract) Fibonacci polynomials introduced by Johann Cigler. If the non-commuting variables are specialized to be elliptic-commuting variables the abstract Fibonacci polynomials become non-commutative ellipt…
We prove that the group of rational points of a non-isotrivial elliptic curve defined over the perfect closure of a function field in one variable over a finite field is finiteley generated.
We present new addition formulae for the Weierstrass functions associated with a general elliptic curve. We prove the structure of the formulae in n-variables and give the explicit addition formulae for the 2- and 3-variable cases. These new results were inspired by new addition formulae found in the case of an equianharmonic curve, which we can now observe as a specialisation of the results here. The new formulae, and the techniques used to find them, also follow the recent work for the generalisation of Weierstrass' functions to curves of higher genus.
