For any rank 2 Drinfeld module rho defined over an algebraic function field, we consider its period matrix P, which is analogous to the period matrix of an elliptic curve defined over a number field. Suppose that the characteristic of F_q is odd and rho is without complex multiplication. We show that the transcendence degree of the field generated by the entries of P over F_q(theta) is 4. As a consequence, we show also the algebraic independence of Drinfeld logarithms of algebraic functions which are linearly independent over F_q(theta).
We develop a theory of Tannakian Galois groups for t-motives and relate this to the theory of Frobenius semilinear difference equations. We show that the transcendence degree of the period matrix associated to a given t-motive is equal to the dimension of its Galois group. Using this result we prove that Carlitz logarithms of algebraic functions that are linearly independent over the rational function field are algebraically independent.
This is the second of a series of articles providing a foundation for the theory of Drinfeld modular forms of arbitrary rank. In the present part, we compare the analytic theory with the algebraic one that was begun in a paper of the third author. For any arithmetic congruence subgroup and any integral weight we establish an isomorphism between the space of analytic modular forms with the space of algebraic modular forms defined in terms of the Satake compactification. From this we deduce the important result that this space is finite dimensional.
Let rho be a Drinfeld A-module with generic characteristic defined over an algebraic function field. We prove that all of the algebraic relations among periods, quasi-periods, and logarithms of algebraic points on rho are those coming from linear relations induced by endomorphisms of rho.
In analogy with the periods of abelian integrals of differentials of third kind for an elliptic curve defined over a number field, we introduce a notion of periods of third kind for a rank 2 Drinfeld Fq[t]-module rho defined over an algebraic function field and derive explicit formulae for them. When rho has complex multiplication by a separable extension, we prove the algebraic independence of rho-logarithms of algebraic points that are linearly independent over the CM field of rho. Together with the main result in [CP08], we completely determine all the algebraic relations among the periods …
We formulate and prove a log-algebraicity theorem for arbitrary rank Drinfeld modules defined over the polynomial ring F_q[theta]. This generalizes results of Anderson for the rank one case. As an application we show that certain special values of Goss L-functions are linear forms in Drinfeld logarithms and are transcendental.
We prove that the local height of a point on a Drinfeld module can be computed by averaging the logarithm of the distance to that point over the torsion points of the module. This gives rise to a Drinfeld module analog of a weak version of Siegel's integral points theorem over number fields and to an analog of a theorem of Schinzel's regarding the order of a point modulo certain primes.
We provide explicit series expansions for the exponential and logarithm functions attached to a rank r Drinfeld module that generalize well known formulas for the Carlitz exponential and logarithm. Using these results we obtain a procedure and an analytic expression for computing the periods of rank 2 Drinfeld modules and also a criterion for supersingularity.
Geyer and Jarden proved several results for torsion points of elliptic curves defined over the fixed field by finitely many elements in the absolute Galois group of a finitely generated field over the prime field in its algebraic closure. As an analogue of these results, this paper studies torsion points of Drinfeld modules defined over the fixed field by finitely many elements in the absolute Galois group of a finitely generated function field in its algebraic closure. We prove some results which are similar to those of Geyer and Jarden.
We give an abstract characterization of the Satake compactification of a general Drinfeld modular variety. We prove that it exists and is unique up to unique isomorphism, though we do not give an explicit stratification by Drinfeld modular varieties of smaller rank which is also expected. We construct a natural ample invertible sheaf on it, such that the global sections of its $k$-th power form the space of (algebraic) Drinfeld modular forms of weight $k$. We show how the Satake compactification and modular forms behave under all natural morphisms between Drinfeld modular varieties; in particu…
We give an effective algorithm to determine the endomorphism ring of a Drinfeld module, both over its field of definition and over a separable or algebraic closure thereof. Using previous results we deduce an effective description of the image of the adelic Galois representation associated to the Drinfeld module, up to commensurability. We also give an effective algorithm to decide whether two Drinfeld modules are isogenous, again both over their field of definition and over a separable or algebraic closure thereof.
Let $k$ be a field of positive characteristic and $K = k(V)$ a function field of a variety $V$ over $k$ and let ${\mathbf A}_K$ be a ring of adéles of $K$ with respect to a cofinite set of the places on $K$ corresponding to the divisors on $V$. Given a Drinfeld module $Φ:{\mathbb F}[t] \to \operatorname{End}_K({\mathbb G}_a)$ over $K$ and a positive integer $g$ we regard both $K^g$ and ${\mathbf A}_K^g$ as $Φ({\mathbb F}_p[t])$-modules under the diagonal action induced by $Φ$. For $Γ\subseteq K^g$ a finitely generated $Φ(\F_p[t])$-submodule and an affine subvariety $X \subseteq \bG_a^g$ define…
Let $Z=X_1\times...\times X_n$ be a product of Drinfeld modular curves. We characterize those algebraic subvarieties $X \subset Z$ containing a Zariski-dense set of CM points, i.e. points corresponding to $n$-tuples of Drinfeld modules with complex multiplication (and suitable level structure). This is a characteristic $p$ analogue of a special case of the André-Oort conjecture. We follow closely the approach used by Bas Edixhoven in characteristic zero, see math.NT/0302138. Note that in this paper we assume that the characteristic $p$ is odd, and we only treat the case of Drinfeld $F_q[T]$-mo…
We introduce differential characters of Drinfeld modules. These are function-field analogues of Buium's p-adic differential characters of elliptic curves and of Manin's differential characters of elliptic curves in differential algebra, both of which have had notable Diophantine applications. We determine the structure of the group of differential characters. This shows the existence of a family of interesting differential modular functions on the moduli of Drinfeld modules. It also leads to a canonical $F$-crystal equipped with a map to the de Rham cohomology of the Drinfeld module. This $F$-…
We show that the absolute value $|f|$ of an invertible holomorphic function $f$ on the Drinfeld symmetric space $\OM^r$ $(r \geq 2)$ is constant on fibers of the building map to the Bruhat-Tits building $\MB\MT$. Its logarithm $\log|f|$ is an affine map on the realization of $\MB\MT$. These results are used to study the vanishing loci of modular forms (coefficient forms, Eisenstein series, para-Eisenstein series) and to determine their images in $\MB\MT$.
Anderson generating functions are generating series for division values of points on Drinfeld modules, and they serve as important tools for capturing periods, quasi-periods, and logarithms. They have been fundamental in recent work on special values of positive characteristic L-series and in transcendence and algebraic independence problems. In the present paper we investigate techniques for expressing Anderson generating functions in terms of the defining polynomial of the Drinfeld module and determine new formulas for periods and quasi-periods.
In this paper a Kummer theory of division points over rank one Drinfeld A=Fq[T]-modules defined over global function fields was given. The results are in complete analogy with the classical Kummer theory of division points over the multiplicative algebraic group Gm defined over number fields.
Inspired by the classical setting, Goss defined $L$-series attached to Drinfeld modules. In this paper, for a fixed choice of a power $q$ of a prime number and a given Drinfeld module $ϕ$ of rank 2 with a certain condition on its coefficients, we give explicit formulas for the values of Goss $L$-series attached to $ϕ$ at positive integers $n$ such that $2n+1\leq q$ in terms of polylogarithms and coefficients of the logarithm series of $ϕ$.
Let $ϕ$ be a rank $r$ Drinfeld $\BF_q[T]$-module determined by $ϕ_T(X) = TX+g_1X^q+...+g_{r-1}X^{q^{r-1}}+X^{q^r}$, where $g_1,...,g_{r-1}$ are algebraically independent over $\BF_q(T)$. Let $N\in\BF_q[T]$ be a polynomial, and $k/\BF_q$ an algebraic extension. We show that the Galois group of $ϕ_N(X)$ over $k(T,g_1,...,g_{r-1})$ is isomorphic to $\GL_r(\BF_q[T]/N\BF_q[T])$, settling a conjecture of Abhyankar.
Introduced by Anglès, Pellarin, and Tavares Ribeiro, Drinfeld modules over Tate algebras are closely connected to Anderson log-algebraicity identities, Pellarin $L$-series, and Taelman class modules. In the present paper we define the de Rham map for Drinfeld modules over Tate algebras, and we prove that it is an isomorphism under natural hypotheses. As part of this investigation we determine further criteria for the uniformizability and rigid analytic triviality of Drinfeld modules over Tate algebras.
In this paper, we prove explicit reciprocity laws for a class of formal Drinfeld modules having stable reduction of height one, in the spirit of those existing in characteristic zero (cf. the work of Wiles). We begin by defining the Kummer pairing in the language of formal Drinfeld modules defined over local fields of positive characteristic. We then prove explicit formulas for this pairing in terms of the logarithm of the formal Drinfeld module, a certain Coleman power series, torsion points and the trace. Our results extend the explicit formulas already proved by Anglès for Carlitz modules, …
We study tensor powers of rank 1 sign-normalized Drinfeld A-modules, where A is the coordinate ring of an elliptic curve over a finite field. Using the theory of vector valued Anderson generating functions, we give formulas for the coefficients of the logarithm and exponential functions associated to these A-modules. We then show that there exists a vector whose bottom coordinate contains a Goss zeta value, whose evaluation under the exponential function is defined over the Hilbert class field. This allows us to prove the transcendence of Goss zeta values and periods of Drinfeld modules as wel…
We study algebraic cycles in the moduli space of $\mathrm{PGL}_2$-shtukas, arising from the diagonal torus. Our main result shows that their intersection pairing with the Heegner-Drinfeld cycle is the product of the $r$-th central derivative of an automorphic $L$-function $L(π,s)$ and Waldspurger's toric period integral. When $L(π,\frac12) \neq 0$, this gives a new geometric interpretation for the Taylor series expansion. When $L(π,\frac12) = 0$, the pairing vanishes, suggesting higher order analogues of the vanishing of cusps in the modular Jacobian, as well as other new phenomena. Our proof …
We propose a lower bound estimate in Dobrowolski's style of the canonical height on a certain family of Drinfeld modules of characteristic 0, including under some hypothesis on their degree and their base field, the complex multiplication case, extending so a previous result of L. Denis on Carlitz modules. Our study is focused on the highest possible level of precision on the parameters involved with rapport to the main values which characterize the Drinfeld module (height, base field degree and rank) and it provides an estimate in function of both separable and inseparable degree of the algeb…
This is a sequel to the paper [F. Breuer, H.-G. Rück, Drinfeld modular polynomials in higher rank, J. Number Theory 129 (2009), 59-83.], in which we introduced Drinfeld modular polynomials of higher rank, using an analytic construction. These polynomials relate the isomorphism invariants of Drinfeld F_q[T]-modules of rank r\geq 2 linked by isogenies of a specified type. In the current paper, we give an algebraic construction of greater generality, and prove a generalization of the Kronecker congruences relations, which describe what happens when modular polynomials associated to P-isogenies ar…
We show that the module of Stark units associated to a sign-normalized rank one Drinfeld module can be obtained from Anderson's equivariant $A$-harmonic series. We apply this to obtain a class formula à la Taelman and to prove a several variable log-algebraicity theorem, generalizing Anderson's log-algebraicity theorem. We also give another proof of Anderson's log-algebraicity theorem using shtukas and obtain various results concerning the module of Stark units for Drinfeld modules of arbitrary rank.
We work with detail the Drinfeld module over the ring $$A=F_2[x,y]/(y^2+y=x^3+x+1).$$ The example in question is one of the four examples that come from quadratic imaginary fields with class number $h = 1$ and rank one. We develop specific formulas for the coefficients $d_k$ and $\ell_k$ of the exponential and logarithmic functions and relate them with the product $D_k$ of all monic elements of $A$ of degree $k$. On the Carlitz module, $D_k$ and $d_k$ coincide, but this is not true in general Drinfeld modules. On this example, we obtain a formula relating both invariants. We prove also using e…
Let $ϕ$ be a non-isotrivial family of Drinfeld A-modules of rank r in generic characteristic with a suitable level structure over a connected smooth algebraic variety X. Suppose that the endomorphism ring of $ϕ$ is equal to A. Then we show that the closure of the analytic fundamental group of X in $SL_r(\mathbb{A}_F^f)$ is open, where $\mathbb{A}_F^f$ denotes the ring of finite adeles of the quotient field F of A. From this we deduce two further results: (1) If X is defined over a finitely generated field extension of F, the image of the arithmetic étale fundamental group of X on the adelic Ta…
This is a short exposition--mostly by way of the toy models ``double logarithm'' and ``triple logarithm''--which should serve as an introduction to a forthcoming article in which we establish a connection between multiple polylogarithms, polygons, trees and algebraic cycles.
We make a detailed account of sign-normalized rank 1 Drinfeld A-modules, for A the coordinate ring of an elliptic curve over a finite field, in order to provide a parallel theory to the Carlitz module for F_q[t]. Using precise formulas for the shtuka function for A, we obtain a product formula for the fundamental period of the Drinfeld module. Using the shtuka function we find identities for deformations of reciprocal sums and as a result prove special value formulas for Pellarin L-series in terms of an Anderson-Thakur function. We also give a new proof of a log-algebraicity theorem of Anderso…
Let $k$ be a field containing $\mathbb{F}_q$. Let $ψ$ be a rank $r$ Drinfeld $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$-module determined by $ψ_t(X) = tX+a_1X^q+\cdots+a_{r-1}X^{q^{r-1}}+X^{q^r}$, where $t,a_1,\ldots,a_{r-1}$ are algebraically independent over $k$. Let $n\in\mathbb{F}_q[T]$ be a monic polynomial. We show that the Galois group of $ψ_n(X)$ over $k(t,a_1,\ldots,a_{r-1})$ is isomorphic to $\mathrm{GL}_r(\mathbb{F}_q[t]/n\mathbb{F}_q[t])$, settling a conjecture of Abhyankar. Along the way we obtain an explicit construction of Drinfeld moduli schemes of level $tn$.
Elliptic sheaves (which are related to Drinfeld modules) were introduced by Drinfeld and further studied by Laumon--Rapoport--Stuhler and others. They can be viewed as function field analogues of elliptic curves and hence are objects "of dimension 1". Their higher dimensional generalisations are called abelian sheaves. In the analogy between function fields and number fields, abelian sheaves are counterparts of abelian varieties. In this article we study the moduli spaces of abelian sheaves and prove that they are algebraic stacks. We further transfer results of Cerednik--Drinfeld and Rapoport…
Let $K$ be an algebraic function field with constant field ${\mathbb F}_q$. Fix a place $\infty$ of $K$ of degree $δ$ and let $A$ be the ring of elements of $K$ that are integral outside $\infty$. We give an explicit description of the elliptic points for the action of the Drinfeld modular group $G=GL_2(A)$ on the Drinfeld's upper half-plane $Ω$ and on the Drinfeld modular curve $G\!\setminus\!Ω$. It is known that under the {\it building map} elliptic points are mapped onto vertices of the {\it Bruhat-Tits tree} of $G$. We show how such vertices can be determined by a simple condition on their…
Colmez conjectured a product formula for periods of abelian varieties over number fields with complex multiplication and proved it in some cases. His conjecture is equivalent to a formula for the Faltings height of CM abelian varieties in terms of the logarithmic derivatives at $s=0$ of certain Artin $L$-functions. In a series of articles we investigate the analog of Colmez's theory in the arithmetic of function fields. There abelian varieties are replaced by Drinfeld modules and their higher dimensional generalizations, so-called $A$-motives. In the present article we prove the product formul…
Let $Φ^ł$ be an algebraic family of Drinfeld modules defined over a field $K$ of characteristic $p$, and let $\bfa,\bfb\in K[ł]$. Assume that neither $\bfa(ł)$ nor $\bfb(ł)$ is a torsion point for $Φ^ł$ for all $ł$. If there exist infinitely many $ł\in\Kbar$ such that both $\bfa(ł)$ and $\bfb(ł)$ are torsion points for $Φ^ł$, then we show that for each $ł\in\Kbar$, we have that $\bfa(ł)$ is torsion for $Φ^ł$ if and only if $\bfb(ł)$ is torsion for $Φ^ł$. In the case $\bfa,\bfb\in K$, then we prove in addition that $\bfa$ and $\bfb$ must be $\Fpbar$-linearly dependent.
For applications in algebraic geometric codes, an explicit description of bases of Riemann-Roch spaces of divisors on function fields over finite fields is needed. We investigate the third function field $ F^{(3)} $ in a tower of Artin-Schreier extensions described by Garcia and Stichtenoth reaching the Drinfeld-Vl{ă}du{ţ} bound. We construct bases for the related Riemann-Roch spaces on $ F^{(3)} $ and present some basic properties of divisors on a line. From the bases, we explicitly calculate the Weierstrass semigroups and pure gaps at several places on $ F^{(3)} $. All of these results can b…
Let $A$ be the ring of elements in an algebraic function field $K$ over a finite field $F_q$ which are integral outside a fixed place $\infty$. In an earlier paper we have shown that the Drinfeld modular group $G=GL_2(A)$ has automorphisms which map congruence subgroups to non-congruence subgroups. Here we prove the existence of (uncountably many) normal genuine non-congruence subgroups, defined to be those which remain non-congruence under the action of every automorphism of $G$. In addition, for all but finitely many cases we evaluate $ngncs(G)$, the smallest index of a normal genuine non-co…
On any smooth algebraic variety over a $p$-adic local field, we construct a tensor functor from the category of de Rham $p$-adic étale local systems to the category of filtered algebraic vector bundles with integrable connections satisfying the Griffiths transversality, which we view as a $p$-adic analogue of Deligne's classical Riemann--Hilbert correspondence. A crucial step is to construct canonical extensions of the desired connections to suitable compactifications of the algebraic variety with logarithmic poles along the boundary, in a precise sense characterized by the eigenvalues of resi…
Linear forms in logarithms over connected commutative algebraic groups over the algebraic numbers field have been studied widely. However, the theory of linear forms in logarithms over noncommutative algebraic groups have not been developed as the one of the commutative algebraic groups and in this paper we start studying linear forms in logarithms over affine groups.
In this paper, we study the logarithmic growth (log-growth) filtration, a mysterious invariant found by B. Dwork, for $(φ,\nabla)$-modules over the bounded Robba ring. The main result is a proof of a conjecture proposed by B. Chiarellotto and N. Tsuzuki on a comparison between the log-growth filtration and Frobenius slope filtration. One of the ingredients of the proof is a new criterion for pure of bounded quotient, which is a notion introduced by Chiarellotto and Tsuzuki to formulate their conjecture. We also give several applications to log-growth Newton polygons, including a conjecture of …
Let $C$ be an algebraically closed field containing the finite field $F_q$ and complete with respect to an absolute value $|\;|$. We prove that under suitable constraints on the coefficients, the series $f(z) = \sum_{n \in \Z} a_n z^{q^n}$ converges to a surjective, open, continuous $F_q$-linear homomorphism $C \rightarrow C$ whose kernel is locally compact. We characterize the locally compact sub-$F_q$-vector spaces $G$ of $C$ which occur as kernels of such series, and describe the extent to which $G$ determines the series. We develop a theory of Newton polygons for these series which lets us…
