This is a short exposition--mostly by way of the toy models ``double logarithm'' and ``triple logarithm''--which should serve as an introduction to a forthcoming article in which we establish a connection between multiple polylogarithms, polygons, trees and algebraic cycles.
We develop a theory of Tannakian Galois groups for t-motives and relate this to the theory of Frobenius semilinear difference equations. We show that the transcendence degree of the period matrix associated to a given t-motive is equal to the dimension of its Galois group. Using this result we prove that Carlitz logarithms of algebraic functions that are linearly independent over the rational function field are algebraically independent.
We obtain the trace map image of the values of certain harmonic volumes for some quotients of Fermat curves. This provides the algorithm that the algebraic cycles called by the k-th Ceresa cycles are not algebraically equivalent to zero in the Jacobian varieties.
For any rank 2 Drinfeld module rho defined over an algebraic function field, we consider its period matrix P, which is analogous to the period matrix of an elliptic curve defined over a number field. Suppose that the characteristic of F_q is odd and rho is without complex multiplication. We show that the transcendence degree of the field generated by the entries of P over F_q(theta) is 4. As a consequence, we show also the algebraic independence of Drinfeld logarithms of algebraic functions which are linearly independent over F_q(theta).
We prove that torsion codimension 2 algebraic cycles modulo rational equivalence on supersingular abelian varieties are algebraically equivalent to zero. As a consequence, we prove that homological equivalence coincides with algebraic equivalence for algebraic cycles of codimension 2 on supersingular abelian varieties over the algebraic closure of finite fields.
We obtain finiteness theorems for algebraic cycles of small codimension on quadric fibrations X over curves over perfect fields k. For example, if k is finitely generated over Q and the fibration has odd relative dimension at least 11, then CH^{i}(X) is finitely generated for i<=4.
Let X be a projective scheme over a finite field. In this paper, we consider the asymptotic behavior of the number of effective cycles on X with bounded degree as it goes to the infinity. By this estimate, we can define a certain kind of zeta functions associated with groups of cycles. We also consider an analogue in Arakelov geometry.
We construct indecomposable cycles in the motivic cohomology group $H^3_{\mathcal M}(A,{\mathbb Q}(2))$ where $A$ is an Abelian surface over a number field or the function field of a base. When $A$ is the self product of the universal elliptic curve over a modular curve, these cycles can be used to prove algebraicity results for values of higher Green's functions, similar to a conjecture of Gross, Kohnen and Zagier. We formulate a conjecture which relates our work with the recent work of Bruinier-Ehlen-Yang on the conjecture of Gross-Kohnen-Zagier.
We show how to deduce the standard sign conjecture (a weakening of the Künneth standard conjecture) for Shimura varieties from some statements about discrete automorphic representations (Arthur's conjectures plus a bit more). We also indicate what is known (to us) about these statements.
Linear forms in logarithms over connected commutative algebraic groups over the algebraic numbers field have been studied widely. However, the theory of linear forms in logarithms over noncommutative algebraic groups have not been developed as the one of the commutative algebraic groups and in this paper we start studying linear forms in logarithms over affine groups.
In this paper we construct a non-trivial element in the higher Griff{}iths group $Griff ^{3,2}$ for the generic abelian fourfold $A^4$ with polarization of type $(1,2,2,2)$. The key idea is to use that $A^4$ can be realized as a generalized Prym variety and for this reason contains in a natural way some curves i.e. dimension 1 cycles.
Let rho be a Drinfeld A-module with generic characteristic defined over an algebraic function field. We prove that all of the algebraic relations among periods, quasi-periods, and logarithms of algebraic points on rho are those coming from linear relations induced by endomorphisms of rho.
We study universal families of stable genus two curves with level structure. Among other things, it is shown that the (1,1) part is spanned by divisor classes, and that there are no cycles of type (2,2) in the third cohomology of the first direct image. Using this, we deduce the Hodge and Tate conjectures hold for these varieties.
I present here the proofs of results, which are obtained in my papers "On the linear forms with algebraic coefficoients of logarithms of algebraic numbers", VINITI, 1996, 1617-B96, pp. 1 - 23 (in Russian), and "On the systems of linear forms with algebraic coefficoients of logarithms of algebraic numbers", VINITI, 1996, 2663-B96, pp. 1 - 18 (in Russian).
Following the work of Gangl, Goncharov and Levin in [GGL], we will give a combinatorial framework for motivic study of iterated integrals on the affine line. We will show that under a certain genericity condition these combinatorial objects yield to elements in the motivic Hopf algebra constructed in Bloch-Kriz [BK]. It will be shown that the Hodge realization of these elements coincides with the Hodge structure induced from the fundamental torsor of path of punctured affine line.
In this paper we give some evidence for the Tate (and Hodge) conjecture(s) for a class of Hilbert modular fourfolds X, whose connected components arise as arithmetic quotients of the fourfold product of the upper half plane by congruence subgroups Γof SL(2, O_K), where O_K denotes the ring of integers of a quartic, Galois, totally real number field K. The expected relationship to the orders of poles of the associated L-functions is verified for abelian extensions of \Q. Also shown is the existence of homologically non-trivial cycles of codimension two which are not intersections of divisors.
In analogy with the periods of abelian integrals of differentials of third kind for an elliptic curve defined over a number field, we introduce a notion of periods of third kind for a rank 2 Drinfeld Fq[t]-module rho defined over an algebraic function field and derive explicit formulae for them. When rho has complex multiplication by a separable extension, we prove the algebraic independence of rho-logarithms of algebraic points that are linearly independent over the CM field of rho. Together with the main result in [CP08], we completely determine all the algebraic relations among the periods …
We construct algebraic cycles in Bloch's cubical cycle group which correspond to multiple polylogarithms with generic arguments. Moreover, we construct out of them a Hopf subalgebra in the Bloch-Kriz cycle Hopf algebra. In the process, we are led to other Hopf algebras built from trees and polygons, which are mapped to the latter. We relate the coproducts to the one for Goncharov's motivic multiple polylogarithms and to the Connes-Kreimer coproduct on plane trees and produce the associated Hodge realization for polygons.
We develop differential algebraic K-theory of regular arithmetic schemes. Our approach is based on a new construction of a functorial, spectrum level Beilinson regulator using differential forms. We construct a cycle map which represents differential algebraic K-theory classes by geometric vector bundles. As an application we derive Lott's relation between short exact sequences of geometric bundles with a higher analytic torsion form.
Brizolis asked the question: does every prime p have a pair (g,h) such that h is a fixed point for the discrete logarithm with base g? The first author previously extended this question to ask about not only fixed points but also two-cycles, and gave heuristics (building on work of Zhang, Cobeli, Zaharescu, Campbell, and Pomerance) for estimating the number of such pairs given certain conditions on g and h. In this paper we extend these heuristics and prove results for some of them, building again on the aforementioned work. We also make some new conjectures and prove some average versions of …

The abstract of the original paper was as follows: We explore some questions related to one of Brizolis: does every prime p have a pair (g,h) such that h is a fixed point for the discrete logarithm with base g? We extend this question to ask about not only fixed points but also two-cycles. Campbell and Pomerance have not only answered the fixed point question for sufficiently large p but have also rigorously estimated the number of such pairs given certain conditions on g and h. We attempt to give heuristics for similar estimates given other conditions on g and h and also in the case of two-cy…
We investigate a descent on simple graphs, starting with the complete graph on $n$ vertices and ending up with the cycle graph by removing one edge after another. We obtain quantitative results showing that graphs with large diameter must have some eigenvalues of large algebraic degree.
We prove a cohomological formula for non-critical residues of degree eight automorphic $L$-functions of $\mathrm{GSp}(4) \times \mathrm{GL}(2)$ in the spirit of Beilinson conjecture. We rely on the cohomological interpretation of an automorphic period integral and on the study of Novodvorsky's integral representation of the $L$-functions.
This thesis intends to make a contribution to the theories of algebraic cycles and moduli spaces over the real numbers. In the study of the subvarieties of a projective algebraic variety, smooth over the field of real numbers, the cycle class map between the Chow ring and the equivariant cohomology ring plays an important role. The image of the cycle class map remains difficult to describe in general; we study this group in detail in the case of real abelian varieties. To do so, we construct integral Fourier transforms on Chow rings of abelian varieties over any field. They allow us to prove t…
We establish new measures of linear independence of logarithms on commutative algebraic groups in the so-called \emph{rational case}. More precisely, let k be a number field and v_{0} be an arbitrary place of k. Let G be a commutative algebraic group defined over k and H be a connected algebraic subgroup of G. Denote by Lie(H) its Lie algebra at the origin. Let u\in Lie(G(C_{v_{0}})) a logarithm of a point p\in G(k). Assuming (essentially) that p is not a torsion point modulo proper connected algebraic subgroups of G, we obtain lower bounds for the distance from u to Lie(H)\otimes_{k} C_{v_{0}…
