The well-known fact that all elliptic curves are modular, proven by Wiles, Taylor, Breuil, Conrad and Diamond, leaves open the question whether there exists a 'nice' representation of the modular form associated to each elliptic curve. Here we provide explicit representations of the modular forms associated to certain Legendre form elliptic curves 2_E_1(λ) as linear combinations of quotients of Dedekind's eta-function. We also give congruences for some of the modular forms' coefficients in terms of Gaussian hypergeometric functions.
We show that for any positive integer $N$, there are only finitely many holomorphic eta quotients of level $N$, none of which is a product of two holomorphic eta quotients other than 1 and itself. This result is an analog of Zagier's conjecture/ Mersmann's theorem which states that: Of any given weight, there are only finitely many irreducible holomorphic eta quotients, none of which is an integral rescaling of another eta quotient. We construct such eta quotients for all cubefree levels. In particular, our construction demonstrates the existence of irreducible holomorphic eta quotients of arb…
We give a short proof of Zagier's conjecture / Mersmann's theorem which states that each holomorphic eta quotient of weight 1/2 is an integral rescaling of some eta quotient from Zagier's list of fourteen primitive holomorphic eta quotients. In particular, given any holomorphic eta quotient $f$ of weight 1/2, this result enables us to provide a closed-form expression for the coefficient of qn in the $q$-series expansion of $f$, for all $n$. We also demonstrate another application of the above theorem in extending the levels of the simple (resp. irreducible) holomorphic eta quotients.
We provide a simplified proof of Zagier's conjecture / Mersmann's theorem which states that of any particular weight, there are only finitely many holomorphic eta quotients, none of which is an integral rescaling of another eta quotient or a product of two holomorphic eta quotients other than 1 and itself.
It is known that all modular forms on SL_2(Z) can be expressed as a rational function in eta(z), eta(2z) and eta(4z). By utilizing known theorems, and calculating the order of vanishing, we can compute the eta-quotients for a given level. Using this count, knowing how many eta-quotients are linearly independent and using the dimension formula, we can figure out a subspace spanned by the eta-quotients. In this paper, we primarily focus on the case where N=p a prime.
For a given generalized eta-quotient, we show that linear progressions whose residues fulfill certain quadratic equations do not give rise to a linear congruence modulo any prime. This recovers known results for classical eta-quotients, especially the partition function, but also yields linear incongruences for more general weakly holomorphic modular forms like the Rogers-Ramanujan functions.
In this paper we find projective plane models of $X_0(N)$ by constructing maps from $X_0(N)$ to the projective plane using modular forms. We use eta-quotients of weight 12. We find those eta-quotients of weight 12 which have maximal order of zero at the cusp $\infty$.
We show that a holomorphic eta quotient has only finitely many factors. We also provide an algorithm for checking irreducibility of holomorphic eta quotients by constructing an upper bound for the minimum of the levels of the proper factors of a reducible holomorphic eta quotient.
We state and prove an identity which represents the most general eta-products of weight 1 by binary quadratic forms. We discuss the utility of binary quadratic forms in finding a multiplicative completion for certain eta-quotients. We then derive explicit formulas for the Fourier coefficients of certain eta-quotients of weight 1 and level 47, 71, 135,648 1024, and 1872.
We show that every modular form on $Γ_0(2^n)$ ($n\geq2$) can be expressed as a sum of eta-quotients. Furthermore, we construct a primitive generator of the ring class field of the order of conductor $4N$ ($N\geq1$) in an imaginary quadratic field in view of the special value of certain eta-quotient.
In this paper we investigate a certain eta-theta quotient which appears in the partition function of entanglement entropy. Employing Wright's circle method, we give its bivariate asymptotic profile.
We employ a variant of Wright's circle method to determine the bivariate asymptotic behaviour of Fourier coefficients for a wide class of eta-theta quotients with simple poles in $\mathbb{H}$.
From the Modularity Theorem proven by Wiles, Taylor, et al, we know that all elliptic curves are modular. It has been shown by Martin and Ono exactly which are represented by eta-quotients, and some examples of elliptic curves represented by modular forms that are linear combinations of eta-quotients have been given by Pathakjee, RosnBrick, and Yoong. In this paper, we first show that eta-quotients which are modular for any congruence subgroup of level $N$ coprime to $6$ can be viewed as modular for $Γ_0(N)$. We then categorize when even weight eta-quotients can exist in $M_k (Γ_1(p))$ and $M_…
We generate ring class fields of imaginary quadratic fields in terms of the special values of certain eta-quotients, which are related to the relative norms of Siegel-Ramachandra invariants. These give us minimal polynomials with relatively small coefficients from which we are able to solve certain quadratic Diophantine equations concerning non-convenient numbers.
We address the problem of constructing a simple holomor- phic eta quotient of a given level N . Such constructions are known for all cubefree N . Here, we provide such constructions for arbitrarily large prime power levels. As a consequence, we obtain an irreducibility
We study the asymptotics for the Fourier coefficients of a broad class of eta-quotients, $$\prod_{r=1}^R \left(\prod_{k\ge 1}\left(1-q^{m_r k}\right)\right)^{δ_r},$$ where $m_1,\ldots,m_R$ are $R$ distinct positive integers and $δ_1,\ldots,δ_R$ are $R$ non-zero integers with $\sum_{r=1}^R δ_{r}\ge 0$.
An eta-quotient of level $N$ is a modular form of the shape $f(z) = \prod_{δ| N} η(δz)^{r_δ}$. We study the problem of determining levels $N$ for which the graded ring of holomorphic modular forms for $Γ_{0}(N)$ is generated by (holomorphic, respectively weakly holomorphic) eta-quotients of level $N$. In addition, we prove that if $f(z)$ is a holomorphic modular form that is non-vanishing on the upper half plane and has integer Fourier coefficients at infinity, then $f(z)$ is an integer multiple of an eta-quotient. Finally, we use our results to determine the structure of the cuspidal subgroup…
An integral power series is called lacunary modulo $M$ if almost all of its coefficients are divisible by $M$. Motivated by the parity problem for the partition function, $p(n)$, Gordon and Ono studied the generating functions for $t$-regular partitions, and determined conditions for when these functions are lacunary modulo powers of primes. We generalize their results in a number of ways by studying infinite products called Dedekind eta-quotients and generalized Dedekind eta-quotients. We then apply our results to the generating functions for the partition functions considered by Nekrasov, Ok…
We express all the newforms of weight $2$ and levels $30$, $33$, $35$, $38$, $40$, $42$, $44$, $45$ as linear combinations of eta quotients and Eisenstein series, and list their corresponding strong Weil curves. Let $p$ denote a prime and $E (\zz_p)$ denote the the group of algebraic points of an elliptic curve $E$ over $\zz_p$. We give a generating function for the order of $E (\zz_p)$ for certain strong Weil curves in terms of eta quotients and Eisenstein series. We then use our generating functions to deduce congruence relations for the order of $E (\zz_p)$ for those strong Weil curves.
Eta quotients on $Γ_0(6)$ yield evaluations of sunrise integrals at 2, 3, 4 and 6 loops. At 2 and 3 loops, they provide modular parametrizations of inhomogeneous differential equations whose solutions are readily obtained by expanding in the nome $q$. Atkin-Lehner transformations that permute cusps ensure fast convergence for all external momenta. At 4 and 6 loops, on-shell integrals are periods of modular forms of weights 4 and 6 given by Eichler integrals of eta quotients. Weakly holomorphic eta quotients determine quasi-periods. A Rademacher sum formula is given for Fourier coefficients of …
For the purposes of this paper supercongruences are congruences between terminating hypergeometric series and quotients of $p$-adic Gamma functions that are stronger than those one can expect to prove using commutative formal group laws. We prove a number of such supercongruences by using classical hypergeometric transformation formulae. These formulae (see the appendix), most of which are decades or centuries old, allow us to write the terminating series as the ratio of products of of $Γ$-values. At this point sums have become quotients. Writing these $Γ$-quotients as $Γ_p$-quotients, we are …
Let $k\geq 2$ be an integer and $j$ an integer satisfying $1\leq j \leq 4k-5$. We define a family $\{ C_{j,k}(z) \}_{1\leq j \leq 4k-5} $ of eta quotients, and prove that this family constitute a basis for the space $S_{2k} (Γ_0 (12))$ of cusp forms of weight $2k$ and level $12$. We then use this basis together with certain properties of modular forms at their cusps to prove an extension of the Ramanujan-Mordell formula.
Enge and Schertz gave the method of using the double eta-quotient for the construction of elliptic curves over finite fields. In their method, it is necessary to count the number of rational points of elliptic curves corresponding to solutions of the modular equation over a finite field, because in advance we can not know which solution of the modular equation is that corresponding to the modular invariant. We give a condition that the modular invariant is a multiple root of the modular polynomial. Consequently, we give a method to reduce the amount of computation in the process of counting th…
It is known that all modular forms on $SL_2(Z)$ can be expressed as a rational function in $η(z)$, $η(2z)$ and $η(4z)$. By using a theorem by Gordon, Hughes, and Newman, and calculating the order of vanishing, we can compute the $η$-quotients for a given level. Using this count, knowing how many $η$-quotients are linearly independent and using the dimension formula, we can figure out how the $η$-quotients span higher levels. In this paper, we primarily focus on the case where $N=p$ a prime, and some discussion for non-prime indicies.
In a handwritten manuscript published with his lost notebook, Ramanujan stated without proofs forty identities for the Rogers-Ramanujan functions. We observe that the functions that appear in Ramanujan's identities can be obtained from a Hecke action on a certain family of eta products. We establish further Hecke-type relations for these functions involving binary quadratic forms. Our observations enable us to find new identities for the Rogers-Ramanujan functions and also to use such identities in turn to find identities involving binary quadratic forms.
We determine the conditions under which singular values of multiple $η$-quotients of square-free level, not necessarily prime to~6, yield class invariants, that is, algebraic numbers in ring class fields of imaginary-quadratic number fields. We show that the singular values lie in subfields of the ring class fields of index $2^{k' - 1}$ when $k' \geq 2$ primes dividing the level are ramified in the imaginary-quadratic field, which leads to faster computations of elliptic curves with prescribed complex multiplication. The result is generalised to singular values of modular functions on $X_0^+ (…

We find bases for the spaces $M_2\Big(Γ_0(24),\Big(\frac{d}{\cdot}\Big)\Big)$ ($d=1,8,12, 24$) of modular forms. We determine the Fourier coefficients of all $35$ theta products $φ[a_1,a_2,a_3,a_4](z)$ in these spaces. We then deduce formulas for the number of representations of a positive integer $n$ by diagonal quaternary quadratic forms with coefficients $1$, $2$, $3$ or $6$ in a uniform manner, of which $14$ are Ramanujan's universal quaternary quadratic forms. We also find all the eta quotients in the Eisenstein spaces $E_2\Big(Γ_0(24),\Big(\frac{d}{\cdot}\Big)\Big)$ ($d=1,8,12,24$) and g…
The values of the partition function, and more generally the Fourier coefficients of many modular forms, are known to satisfy certain congruences. Results given by Ahlgren and Ono for the partition function and by Treneer for more general Fourier coefficients state the existence of infinitely many families of congruences. In this article we give an algorithm for computing explicit instances of such congruences for eta-quotients. We illustrate our method with a few examples.
The partition function $ p_{[1^c11^d]}(n)$ can be defined using the generating function, \[\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}p_{[1^c{11}^d]}(n)q^n=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\dfrac{1}{(1-q^n)^c(1-q^{11 n})^d}.\] In this paper, we prove infinite families of congruences for the partition function $ p_{[1^c11^d]}(n)$ modulo powers of $11$ for any integers $c$ and $d$, which generalizes Atkin and Gordon's congruences for powers of the partition function. The proofs use an explicit basis for the vector space of modular functions of the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(11)$.
We prove hypergeometric type identities for a function defined in terms of quotients of the $p$-adic gamma function. We use these identities to prove a supercongruence conjecture of Rodriguez-Villegas between a truncated $_4F_3$ hypergeometric series and the Fourier coefficients of certain weight four modular form.
We consider a class of generating functions analogous to the generating function of the partition function and establish a bound on the primes $\ell$ for which their coefficients $c(n)$ obey congruences of the form $c(\ell n + a) \equiv 0 \pmod \ell$. We apply this result to obtain a complete characterization of the congruences of the same form that the sequences $c_N(n)$ satisfy, where $c_N(n)$ is defined by $ \sum_{n=0}^{\infty} c_N(n)q^n = \prod_{n=1}^{\infty} \frac{1}{(1-q^n)(1-q^{Nn})}$. This last result answers a question of H.-C. Chan.
We prove hypergeometric type summation identities for a function defined in terms of quotients of the $p$-adic gamma function by counting points on certain families of hyperelliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. We also find certain special values of that function.

In \cite{mccarthy2}, McCarthy defined a function $_{n}G_{n}[\cdots]$ using the Teichmüller character of finite fields and quotients of the $p$-adic gamma function. This function extends hypergeometric functions over finite fields to the $p$-adic setting. In this paper, we give certain transformation formulas for the function $_{n}G_{n}[\cdots]$ which are not implied from the analogous hypergeometric functions over finite fields.
In 2013, Lemke Oliver classified all eta-quotients which are theta functions. In this paper, we unify the eta-theta functions by constructing mock modular forms from the eta-theta functions with even characters, such that the shadows of these mock modular forms are given by the eta-theta functions with odd characters. In addition, we prove that our mock modular forms are quantum modular forms. As corollaries, we establish simple finite hypergeometric expressions which may be used to evaluate Eichler integrals of the odd eta-theta functions, as well as some curious algebraic identities.
The partition function $ p_{[1^c\ell^d]}(n)$ can be defined using the generating function, \[\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}p_{[1^c{\ell}^d]}(n)q^n=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\dfrac{1}{(1-q^n)^c(1-q^{\ell n})^d}.\] In \cite{P}, we proved infinite family of congruences for this partition function for $\ell=11$. In this paper, we extend the ideas that we have used in \cite{P} to prove infinite families of congruences for the partition function $p_{[1^c\ell^d]}(n)$ modulo powers of $\ell$ for any integers $c$ and $d$, for primes $5\leq \ell\leq 17$. This generalizes Atkin, Gordon and Hughes' congruences for powers …
We investigate the parity of the coefficients of certain eta-quotients, extensively examining the case of $m$-regular partitions. Our theorems concern the density of their odd values, in particular establishing lacunarity modulo 2 for specified coefficients; self-similarities modulo 2; and infinite families of congruences in arithmetic progressions. For all $m \leq 28$, we either establish new results of these types where none were known, extend previous ones, or conjecture that such results are impossible. All of our work is consistent with a new, overarching conjecture that we present for ar…
Let $X_0^6(1)/W_6$ be the Atkin-Lehner quotient of the Shimura curve $X_0^6(1)$ associated to a maximal order in an indefinite quaternion algebra of discriminant $6$ over $\mathbb Q$. By realizing modular forms on $X_0^6(1)/W_6$ in two ways, one in terms of hypergeometric functions and the other in terms of Borcherds forms, and using Schofer's formula for values of Borcherds forms at CM-points, we obtain special values of certain hypergeometric functions in terms of periods of elliptic curves over $\overline\mathbb Q$ with complex multiplication.
Andrews' $(k, i)$-singular overpartition function $\overline{C}_{k, i}(n)$ counts the number of overpartitions of $n$ in which no part is divisible by $k$ and only parts $\equiv \pm i\pmod{k}$ may be overlined. In recent times, divisibility of $\overline{C}_{3\ell, \ell}(n)$, $\overline{C}_{4\ell, \ell}(n)$ and $\overline{C}_{6\ell, \ell}(n)$ by $2$ and $3$ are studied for certain values of $\ell$. In this article, we study divisibility of $\overline{C}_{3\ell, \ell}(n)$, $\overline{C}_{4\ell, \ell}(n)$ and $\overline{C}_{6\ell, \ell}(n)$ by primes $p\geq 5$. For all positive integer $\ell$ an…
