Hickerson made an explicit formula for Dedekind sums $s(p,q)$ in terms of the continued fraction of $p/q$. We develop analogous formula for generalized Dedekind sums $s_{i,j}(p,q)$ defined in association with the $x^{i}y^{j}$-coefficient of the Todd power series of the lattice cone in $\Bbb{R}^2$ generated by $(1,0)$ and $(p,q)$. The formula generalizes Hickerson's original one and reduces to Hickerson's for $i=j=1$. In the formula, generalized Dedekind sums are divided into two parts: the integral $s^I_{ij}(p,q)$ and the fractional $s^R_{ij}(p,q)$. We apply the formula to Siegel's formula for partial zeta values at a negative integer and obtain a new expression which involves only $s^I_{ij}(p,q)$ the integral part of generalized Dedekind sums. This formula directly generalize Meyer's formula for the special value at $0$. Using our formula, we present the table of the partial zeta value at $s=-1$ and $-2$ in more explicit form. Finally, we present another application on the equidistribution property of the fractional parts of the graph $\Big{(}\frac{p}{q},R_{i+j}q^{i+j-2} s_{ij}(p,q)\Big{)}$ for a certain integer $R_{i+j}$ depending on $i+j$.
We apply a technique used in $[$Tsukerman, Equality of Dedekind sums mod $\mathbb Z$, $2\mathbb Z$ and $4\mathbb Z$, arXiv:1408.3225] combined with the Barkan-Hickerson-Knuth-formula in order to obtain congruences mod $4$ for the alternating sum of the partial quotients of the continued fraction expansion of $a/b$, where $0<a<b$ are integers.
We use a specialization of Ramanujan's ${}_1ψ_1$ summation to give a new proof of a recent formula of Hickerson and Mortenson which expands a special family of Hecke-type double sums in terms of Appell-Lerch sums and theta functions.
We obtain a combinatorial proof of a surprising weighted partition equality of Berkovich and Uncu. Our proof naturally leads to a formula for the number of partitions with a given parity of the smallest part, in terms of S(i), the number of partitions of i into distinct parts with even rank minus the number with odd rank, for which there is an almost closed formula by Andrews, Dyson and Hickerson. This method of calculating the number of partitions of n with a given parity of the smallest part is practical and efficient.
In this paper, applying the Faà di Bruno formula and some properties of Bell polynomials, several closed formulas and determinantal expressions involving Stirling numbers of the second kind for higher-order Bernoulli and Euler polynomials are presented.
In this article, we obtain a transformation formula for the higher power of odd zeta values, which generalizes Ramanujan's formula for odd zeta values. We have also investigated many important applications, which in turn provide generalizations of the transformation formula of the Eisenstein series, Dedekind eta function etc.
We explicitly give factorization formulas for higher depth determinants, which are defined via derivatives of the spectral zeta function at non-positive integer points, of Laplacians on the n-sphere in terms of the multiple gamma functions.
We develop explicit formulas for Hecke operators of higher genus in terms of spherical coordinates. Applications are given to summation of various generating series with coefficients in local Hecke algebra and in a tensor product of such algebras. In particular, we formulate and prove Rankin's lemma in genus two. An application to a lifting from (GSp2 \times GSp2) to GSp4 is given using Ikeda-Miyawaki constructions.
We give a closed formula for the $n^{th}$ derivative of $\arctan x$. A new expansion for $\arctan x$ is also obtained and rapidly convergent series for $π$ and $π\sqrt 3$ are derived.
Let $N$ and $p$ be primes such that $p$ divides the numerator of $\frac{N-1}{12}$. In this paper, we study the rank $g_p$ of the completion of the Hecke algebra acting on cuspidal modular forms of weight $2$ and level $Γ_0(N)$ at the $p$-maximal Eisenstein ideal. We give in particular an explicit criterion to know if $g_p \geq 3$, thus answering partially a question of Mazur. In order to study $g_p$, we develop the theory of \textit{higher Eisenstein elements}, and compute the first few such elements in four different Hecke modules. This has applications such as generalizations of the Eichler …
Zagier proved that the traces of singular values of the classical j-invariant are the Fourier coefficients of a weight 3/2 modular form and Duke provided a new proof of the result by establishing an exact formula for the traces using Niebur's work on a certain class of non-holomorphic modular forms. In this short note, by utilizing Niebur's work again, we generalize Duke's result to exact formulas for traces of singular moduli of higher level modular functions.
We generalize a formula of Leopoldt which relates the p-adic regulator modulo p of a real abelian extension of Q with the value of the relative Dedekind zeta function at s=2-p. We use this generalization to give a statement on the non-vanishing modulo p of this relative zeta function at the point s=1 under a mild condition.
In local class field theory, the Schmid-Witt symbol encodes interesting data about the ramification theory of $p$-extensi-ons of $K$ and can, for example, be used to compute the higher ramification groups of such extensions. In 1936, Schmid discovered an explicit formula for the Schmid-Witt symbol of Artin-Schreier extensions of local fields. Later, his formula was generalized to Artin-Schreier-Witt extensions, but still over a local field. In this paper we generalize Schmid's formula to compute the Artin-Schreier-Witt-Parshin symbol for Artin-Schreier-Witt extensions of two-dimensional local …
We give a product expansion for the Drinfeld discriminant function in arbitrary rank $r$, which generalizes the formula obtained by Gekeler for the rank 2 Drinfeld discriminant function. This enables one to compute the Fourier expansion of this function much more efficiently. The formula in this article uses an $r-1$-dimensional parameter and as such provides a nice counterpoint to the formula previously obtained by Hamahata, which is written in terms of several 1-dimensional parameters.
When k > 1 and s is sufficiently large in terms of k, we derive an explicit multi-term asymptotic expansion for the number of representations of a large natural number as the sum of s positive integral k-th powers.
The field-of-norms functor is applied to deduce explicit reciprocity formulae for the Hilbert symbol in the mixed characteristic case from the explicit formula for the Witt symbol in characteristic p > 2 in the context of higher local fields. Is is shown that a "very special case" of this construction gives Vostokov's explicit formula
Let p be an odd prime and let L/k be a Galois extension of number fields whose Galois group is isomorphic to the dihedral group of order 2p. Let S be a finite set of primes of L which is stable under the action of Gal(L/k). The Lichtenbaum conjecture on special values of the Dedekind zeta function at negative integers, together with Brauer formalism for Artin's L-functions, gives a (conjectural) formula relating orders of motivic cohomology groups of rings of S-integers and higher regulators of S-units of the subextensions of L/k. In analogy with the classical case of special values at 0, we g…
Since the development of higher local class field theory, several explicit reciprocity laws have been constructed. In particular, there are formulas describing the higher-dimensional Hilbert symbol given, among others, by M. Kurihara, A. Zinoviev and S. Vostokov. K. Kato also has explicit formulas for the higher-dimensional Kummer pairing associated to certain (one-dimensional) $p$-divisible groups. In this paper we construct an explicit reciprocity law describing the Kummer pairing associated to any (one-dimensional) formal group. The formulas are a generalization to higher-dimensional local …
Continuing the work of \cite{7} and \cite{8}, we derive an analogue of the classical "$k/12$-formula" for Drinfeld modular forms of rank $r \geq 2$. Here the vanishing order $ν_ω(f)$ of one modular form at some point $ω$ of the complex upper half-plane is replaced by the intersection multiplicity $ν_{\bo}(f_1,\ldots,f_{r-1})$ of $r-1$ independent Drinfeld modular forms at some point $\bo$ of the Drinfeld symmetric space $\OM^r$. We apply the formula to determine the common zeroes of $r-1$ consecutive Eisenstein series $E_{q^{i}-1}$, where $n-r<i<n$ for some $n \geq r$.
It is known that average Siegel theta series lie in the space of Siegel Eisenstein series. Also, every lattice equipped with an even integral quadratic form lies in a maximal lattice. Here we consider average Siegel theta series of degree 2 attached to maximal lattices; we construct maps for which the average theta series is an eigenform. We evaluate the action of these maps on Siegel Eisenstein series of degree 2 (without knowing their Fourier coefficients), and then realise the average theta series as an explicit linear combination of the Eisenstein series.
The main purpose of this paper is to study higher order moments of the generalized quadratic Gauss sums weighted by $L$-functions using estimates for character sums and analytic methods. We find asymptotic formulas for three character sums which arise naturally in the study of higher order moments of the generalized quadratic Gauss sums. We then use these character sum estimates to find asymptotic formulas for the $\nth{6}$ and $\nth{8}$ order moments of the generalized quadratic Gauss sums weighted by $L$-functions. Our asymptotic formulas satisfy a conjecture of Wenpeng Zhang.
In previous work the second author derived an asymptotic formula for the sum of the distances between centers of consecutive Ford spheres. In this paper we extend these results by proving asymptotic formulas for higher moments of the distances. Our proofs rely on lattice point counting estimates with error terms coming from the Gauss circle problem.
This is a review of the vast area of explicit formulas for the (wild) Hilbert symbol (not only in the one-dimensional case but in the higher dimensional case as well). An extensive bilbiography is included.
We prove the higher Siegel--Weil formula for \emph{corank one} terms, relating (1) the $r^{\rm th}$ central derivatives of corank one Fourier coefficients of Siegel--Eisenstein series, and (2) the degrees of special cycles of virtual dimension 0 on the moduli stack of Hermitian shtukas with $r$ legs. Notably, the formula holds for all $r$, regardless of the order of vanishing of the Eisenstein series. This extends earlier work of Feng--Yun--Zhang, who proved the higher Siegel--Weil formula for the non-singular (corank zero) terms.
An exponential homomorphism for a complete discrete valuation field of characteristic zero which relates differential forms and the Milnor K-groups of the field is studied. An application to explicit formulas is included.
We compute higher moments of the Siegel--Veech transform over quotients of $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ by the Hecke triangle groups. After fixing a normalization of the Haar measure on $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ we use geometric results and linear algebra to create explicit integration formulas which give information about densities of $k$-tuples of vectors in discrete subsets of $\mathbb{R}^2$ which arise as orbits of Hecke triangle groups. This generalizes work of W.~Schmidt on the variance of the Siegel transform over $SL(2,\mathbb{R})/SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$.
We prove that the higher-dimensional Contou-Carrère symbol is invariant under continuous automorphisms of algebras of iterated Laurent series over a ring. Applying this property, we obtain a new explicit formula for the higher-dimensional Contou-Carrère symbol. Unlike previously known formulas, this formula is given over an arbitrary ring, not necessarily a $\mathbb Q$-algebra, and does not involve algebraic $K$-theory.
We construct a higher-dimensional Contou-Carrère symbol and we study its various fundamental properties. The higher-dimensional Contou-Carrère symbol is defined by means of the boundary map for $K$-groups. We prove its universal property. We provide an explicit formula for the higher-dimensional Contou-Carrère symbol over $\mathbb Q$ and we prove integrality of this formula. A relation with the higher-dimensional Witt pairing is also studied.
