We count primitive lattices of rank $d$ inside $\mathbb{Z}^{n}$ as their covolume tends to infinity, with respect to certain parameters of such lattices. These parameters include, for example, the subsapce that a lattice spans, namely its projection to the Grassmannian; its homothety class; and its equivalence class modulo rescaling and rotation, often referred to as a shape. We add to a prior work of Schmidt by allowing sets in the spaces of parameters that are general enough to conclude joint equidistribution of these parameters. In addition to the primitive $d$-lattices themselves, we also consider their orthogonal complements in $\mathbb{Z}^{n}$, and show that the equidistribution occurs jointly for primitive lattices and their orthogonal complements. Finally, our asymptotic formulas for the number of primitive lattices include an explicit error term.
We prove effective joint equidistribution of several natural parameters associated to primitive vectors in $\mathbb{Z}^{n}$, as the norm of these vectors tends to infinity. These parameters include the direction, the orthogonal lattice, and the length of the shortest solution to the associated $\gcd$ equation. We show that the first two parameters equidistribute w.r.t. the Haar measure on the corresponding spaces, which are the unit sphere and the space of unimodular rank $n-1$ lattices in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ respectively. The main novelty is the equidistribution of the shortest solutions to the …
We prove an effective version of a result due to Einsiedler, Mozes, Shah and Shapira who established the equidistribution of primitive rational points on expanding horospheres in the space of unimodular lattices in at least $3$ dimensions. Their proof uses techniques from homogeneous dynamics and relies in particular on measure-classification theorems -- an approach which does not lend itself to effective bounds. We implement a strategy based on spectral theory, Fourier analysis and Weil's bound for Kloosterman sums in order to quantify the rate of equidistribution for a specific horospherical…
We count flags of primitive lattices, which are objects of the form ${0}=Λ^{(0)}<Λ^{(1)}< \cdots <Λ^{(\ell)}= \mathbb{Z}^n$, where every $Λ^{(i)}$ is a primitive lattice in $\mathbb{Z}^n$. The counting is with respect to two different natural height functions, allowing us to give a new proof of the Manin conjecture for flag varieties over rational numbers. We deduce the equidistribution of rational points in flag varieties, as well as the equidistribution of the shapes of the successive quotient lattices, $Λ^{(i)}/Λ^{(i-1)}$. In doing so, we generalize previous work of Schmidt, as well as our …
We investigate the distribution of the angles of Gauss sums attached to the cuspidal representations of general linear groups over finite fields. In particular we show that they happen to be equidistributed w.r.t.the Haar measure. However, for representations of $PGL_2(\mathbb F_q)$, they are clustered around $1$ and $-1$ for odd $p$ and around $1$ for $p=2$.
We prove effective equidistribution of primitive rational points and of primitive rational points defined by monomials along long horocycle orbits in products of the torus and the modular surface. This answers a question posed in joint work by the first and the last named author with Shahar Mozes and Uri Shapira. Under certain congruence conditions we prove the joint equidistribution of conjugate rational points in the two-torus and the modular surface.
We associate a certain tensor product lattice to any primitive integer lattice and ask about its typical shape. These lattices are related to the tangent bundle of Grassmannians and their study is motivated by Peyre's programme on "freeness" for rational points of bounded height on Fano varieties.
We prove an effective equidistribution theorem for orbits of horospherical subgroups of $\mathrm{SO}(2, 2)$ and $\mathrm{SO}(3, 1)$ in quotients of $\mathrm{SL}_4(\mathbb{R})$ with a polynomial error term. In a forthcoming paper, we will use this theorem to prove an effective version of the Oppenheim conjecture for indefinite quadratic forms of signature $(2, 2)$ or $(3, 1)$ with a polynomial error rate.
Let $p$ be a prime and let $S$ be a non-empty subset of $\mathbb{F}_p$. Generalizing a result of Green and Tao on the equidistribution of high-rank polynomials over finite fields, we show that if $P: \mathbb{F}_p^n \rightarrow \mathbb{F}_p$ is a polynomial and its restriction to $S^n$ does not take each value with approximately the same frequency, then there exists a polynomial $P_0: \mathbb{F}_p^n \rightarrow \mathbb{F}_p$ that vanishes on $S^n$, such that the polynomial $P-P_0$ has bounded rank. Our argument uses two black boxes: that a tensor with high partition rank has high analytic rank …
In this paper we study spherical equidistribution on the space of (translates of) adelic lattices, which we apply to understand the fine-scale statistics of the directions in the set of shifted primitive lattice points. We also apply our results to the distribution of the free path lengths in the Boltzmann--Grad limit for point sets such as (possibly non-rational) translates of the lattice points all of whose coordinates are squarefree. Besides the equidistribution results for translates of expanding horospheres, a key ingredient is a probabilistic argument which allows us to tackle the techni…
We prove effective equidistribution theorems, with polynomial error rate, for orbits of the unipotent subgroups of $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb R)$ in arithmetic quotients of $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb C)$ and $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb R)\times\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb R)$. The proof is based on the use of a Margulis function, tools from incidence geometry, and the spectral gap of the ambient space.
We establish the limiting distribution of certain subsets of Farey sequences, i.e., sequences of primitive rational points, on expanding horospheres in covers $Δ\backslash\mathrm{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{R})$ of $\mathrm{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{Z})\backslash\mathrm{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{R})$, where $Δ$ is a finite index subgroup of $\mathrm{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{Z})$. These subsets can be obtained by projecting to the hyperplane $\{(x_1,\ldots,x_{n+1})\in\mathbb{R}^{n+1}:x_{n+1}=1\}$ sets of the form $\mathbf{A}=\bigcup_{j=1}^J\boldsymbol{a}_jΔ$, where for all $j$, $\boldsymbol{a}_j$ is a primitive lattice point in $\math…
We give a rate of equidistribution of lifts of horocycles from the space $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)\backslash \mathrm{SL}(2, \mathbb R)$ to the space $\mathrm{ASL}(2,\mathbb Z)\backslash \mathrm{ASL}(2,\mathbb R)$, making effective a theorem of Elkies and McMullen. This result constitutes an effective version of Ratner's measure classification theorem for measures supported on general horocycle lifts. The method used relies on Weil's resolution of the Riemann hypothesis for function fields in one variable and generalizes the approach of Strömbergsson to the case of linear lifts and that of Brow…
We establish a joint distribution result concerning the fractional part of $αp^θ$ for $θ\in (0,1), \ α>0$, where $p$ is a prime satisfying a Chebotarev condition in a fixed finite Galois extension over $\mathbb{Q}$. As an application, for a fixed non-CM elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$, an asymptotic formula is given for the number of primes at the extremes of the Sato-Tate measure modulo a large prime $\ell$. These are precisely the primes $p$ for which the Frobenius trace $a_p(E)$ satisfies the congruence $a_p(E)\equiv [2\sqrt{p}] \bmod \ell$. We assume a zero-free region hypothesis for Dedekin…
We use spectral method to prove a joint equidistribution of primitive rational points and the same along expanding horocycle orbits in the products of the circle and the unit cotangent bundle of the modular surface. This result explicates the error bound in a recent work of Einsiedler, Luethi, and Shah \cite[Theorem $1.1$]{ELS}. The error is sharp upon the best known progress towards the Ramanujan conjecture at the finite places for the modular surface.
We establish effective counting and equidistribution results for lattice points in families of domains in hyperbolic spaces, of any dimension and over any field. The domains we focus on are defined as product sets with respect to the Iwasawa decomposition. Several classical Diophantine problems can be reduced to counting lattice points in such domains, including distribution of shortest solution to the gcd equation, and angular distribution of primitive vectors in the plane. We give an explicit and effective solution to these problems, and extend them to imaginary quadratic number fields. Furt…
Baker-Rumely and Favre-Rivera-Letelier independently proved an important arithmetic equidistribution theorem for points of small height on the Berkovich compactification of the projective line with respect to an adelic measure on $\mathbb{P}^1$. Around the same time, Chambert-Loir proved a more general version of this arithmetic equidistribution theorem in the setting of curves from a different approach. We generalize the notion of an adelic measure to that of a quasi-adelic measure on $\mathbb{P}^1$, and show that arithmetic equidistribution of points with small height holds for quasi-adelic …
Let $C$ be a cubic form with rational coefficients in $n$ variables, and let $h$ be the $h$-invariant of $C$. Let $L_1, \ldots, L_r$ be linear forms with real coefficients such that if $\boldsymbolα \in \mathbb{R}^r \setminus \{ \boldsymbol{0} \}$ then $\boldsymbolα \cdot \mathbf{L}$ is not a rational form. Assume that $h > 16 + 8 r$. Let $\boldsymbolτ \in \mathbb{R}^r$, and let $η$ be a positive real number. We prove an asymptotic formula for the weighted number of integer solutions $\mathbf{x} \in [-P,P]^n$ to the system $C(\mathbf{x}) = 0, \: |\mathbf{L}(\mathbf{x}) - \boldsymbolτ| < η$. If…
Let $G=\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})^n$, let $Γ=Γ_0^n$, where $Γ_0$ is a co-compact lattice in $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$, let $F(\mathbf{x})$ be a non-singular quadratic form and let $u(x_1,...,x_n)$ denote the unipotent elements in $G$ which generate the standard $n$ dimensional horospherical subgroup, consisting of $2\times 2$ upper triangular unipotent matrices in each co-ordinate. We prove that in absence of any local obstructions for $F$, given any $x_0\in G/Γ$, the sparse subset $\{u(\mathbf{x})x_0:\in\mathbb{Z}^n, F(\mathbf{x})=0\}$ equidistributes in $G/Γ$ as long as $n\geq 481$, indepen…
This paper is devoted to the study of equidistributional properties of \textit{totient points} in $\mathbb{N}^r$, that is, of coprime $r$-tuples of integers, with particular emphasis on some relevant sets of totient points fulfilling extra divisibility or coprimality conditions, or lying on arithmetic progressions.
We study various statistics regarding the distribution of the points \[\left\{\left(\frac{d}{q},\frac{\overline{d}}{q}\right) \in \mathbb{T}^2 : d \in (\mathbb{Z}/q\mathbb{Z})^{\times}\right\}\] as $q$ tends to infinity. Due to nontrivial bounds for Kloosterman sums, it is known that these points equidistribute on the torus. We prove refinements of this result, including bounds for the discrepancy, small scale equidistribution, bounds for the covering exponent associated to these points, sparse equidistribution, and mixing.
An important ingredient in the Ferrero--Washington proof of the vanishing of cyclotomic $μ$-invariant for Kubota--Leopoldt $p$-adic $L$-functions is an equidistribution result which they established using the Weyl criterion. The purpose of our manuscript is to provide an alternative proof by adopting a dynamical approach. A key ingredient to our methods is studying an ergodic skew-product map on $\mathbb{Z}_p \times [0,1]$, which is then suitably identified as a factor of the $2$-sided Bernoulli shift on the sample space $\{0,1,2,\cdots,p-1\}^{\mathbb{Z}}$.
Let $X=\text{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})/\text{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$, and $g_t=\text{diag}(e^{2t}, e^{-t}, e^{-t})$. Let $ν$ denote the push-forward of the normalized Lebesgue measure on a segment of a straight line in the expanding horosphere of $\{g_t\}_{t>0}$, under the map $h\mapsto h\text{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$ from $\text{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})$ to $X$. We give explicit necessary and sufficient Diophantine conditions on the line for equidistribution of each of the following families of measures on $X$: (1) $g_t$-translates of $ν$ as $t\to\infty$. (2) averages of $g_t$-translates of $ν$ over $t\in[0,T]$ as $T\…
It has been known since Vinogradov that, for irrational $α$, the sequence of fractional parts $\{αp\}$ is equidistributed in $\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$ as $p$ ranges over primes. There is a natural second-order equidistribution property, a pair correlation of such fractional parts, which has recently received renewed interest, in particular regarding its relation to additive combinatorics. In this paper we show that the primes do not enjoy this stronger equidistribution property.
In this paper, we give an optimal estimate of an average of Hurwitz class numbers. As an application, we give an equidistribution result of the family $\{\frac{t}{2q^{ν/2}} \ | \ ν\in \mathbb{N}, t \in \mathbb{Z}, |t|<2q^{ν/2}\}$ with $q$ prime, weighted by Hurwitz class numbers. This equidistribution produces many asymptotic relations among Hurwitz class numbers. Our proof relies on the resolvent trace formula of Hecke operators on elliptic cusp forms of weight $k\ge 2$.
Let $M=Γ\backslash\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ be a compact manifold, and let $f\in C^\infty(M)$ be a function of zero average. We use spectral methods to get uniform (i.e. independent of spectral gap) bounds for twisted averages of $f$ along long horocycle orbit segments. We apply this to obtain an equidistribution result for sparse subsets of horocycles on $M$.
We use Vinogradov's method to prove equidistribution of a spin symbol governing the $16$-rank of class groups of quadratic number fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-2p})$, where $p \equiv 1 \bmod 4$ is a prime.
In this paper, we study an analytic curve $φ: I=[a,b]\rightarrow \mathrm{M}(m\times n, \mathbb{R})$ in the space of $m$ by $n$ real matrices, and show that if $φ$ satisfies certain geometric condition, then for almost every point on the curve, the Diophantine approximation given by Dirichlet's Theorem can not be improved. To do this, we embed the curve into some homogeneous space $G/Γ$, and prove that under the action of some expanding diagonal subgroup $A= \{a(t): t \in \mathbb{R}\}$, the translates of the curve tend to be equidistributed in $G/Γ$, as $t \rightarrow +\infty$.
Let $G=SL_2(\mathbb R)^d$ and $Γ=Γ_0^d$ with $Γ_0$ a lattice in $SL_2(\mathbb R)$. Let $S$ be any "curved" submanifold of small codimension of a maximal horospherical subgroup of $G$ relative to an $\mathbb R$-diagonalizable element $a$ in the diagonal of $G$. Then for $S$ compact our result can be described by saying that $a^n \text{vol}_S$ converges in an effective way to the volume measure of $G/Γ$ when $n\to \infty$, with $\text{vol}_S$ the volume measure on $S$.
By definition primitive and $2$-primitive elements of a finite field extension $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ have order $q^n-1$ and $(q^n-1)/2$, respectively. We have already shown that, with minor reservations, there exists a primitive element and a $2$-primitive element $ξ\in \mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ with prescribed trace in the ground field $\mathbb{F}_q$. Here we amend our previous proofs of these results, firstly, by a reduction of these problems to extensions of prime degree $n$ and, secondly, by deriving an exact expression for the number of squares in $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ whose trace has prescribed value …
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field of characteristic $p$ with $q$ elements and $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ its extension of degree $n$. We prove that there exists a primitive element of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ that produces a completely normal basis of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$, provided that $n=p^{\ell}m$ with $(m,p)=1$ and $q>m$.
The celebrated Primitive Normal Basis Theorem states that for any $n\ge 2$ and any finite field $\mathbb F_q$, there exists an element $α\in \mathbb F_{q^n}$ that is simultaneously primitive and normal over $\mathbb F_q$. In this paper, we prove some variations of this result, completing the proof of a conjecture proposed by Anderson and Mullen (2014). Our results also imply the existence of elements of $\mathbb F_{q^n}$ with multiplicative order $(q^n-1)/2$ and prescribed trace over $\mathbb F_q$.
In this article, we study an analytic curve $φ: I=[a,b]\rightarrow \mathrm{M}(n\times n, \mathbb{R})$ in the space of $n$ by $n$ real matrices, and show that if $φ$ satisfies certain geometric conditions, then for almost every point on the curve, the Diophantine approximation given by Dirichlet's Theorem is not improvable. To do this, we embed the curve into some homogeneous space $G/Γ$, and prove that under the action of some expanding diagonal flow $A= \{a(t): t \in \mathbb{R}\}$, the expanding curves tend to be equidistributed in $G/Γ$, as $t \rightarrow +\infty$. This solves a special case…
In this article, we give a largely self-contained proof that the quartic extension $\mathbb{F}_{q^4}$ of the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ contains a primitive element $α$ such that the element $α+α^{-1}$ is also a primitive element of ${\mathbb{F}_{q^4}},$ and $Tr_{\mathbb{F}_{q^4}|\mathbb{F}_{q}}(α)=a$ for any prescribed $a \in \mathbb{F}_q$. The corresponding result for finite field extensions of degrees exceeding 4 has already been established by Gupta, Sharma and Cohen.
