Given a place $ω$ of a global function field $K$ over a finite field, with associated affine function ring $R_ω$ and completion $K_ω$, the aim of this paper is to give an effective joint equidistribution result for renormalized primitive lattice points $(a,b)\in {R_ω}^2$ in the plane ${K_ω}^2$, and for renormalized solutions to the gcd equation $ax+by=1$. The main tools are techniques of Goronik and Nevo for counting lattice points in well-rounded families of subsets. This gives a sharper analog in positive characteristic of a result of Nevo and the first author for the equidistribution of the primitive lattice points in $\ZZ^2$.
We determine when the equidistribution property for possibly moving targets holds for a rational function of degree more than one on the projective line over an algebraically closed field of any characteristic and complete with respect to a non-trivial absolute value. This characterization could be useful in the positive characteristic case. Based on the variational argument, we give a purely local proof of the adelic equidistribution theorem for possibly moving targets, which is due to Favre and Rivera-Letelier, using a dynamical Diophantine approximation theorem by Silverman and by Szpiro--T…
We prove an equidistribution result for torsion points of Drinfeld modules of generic characteristic. We also show that similar equidistribution statements provide proofs for the Manin-Mumford and the Bogomolov conjectures for Drinfeld modules.
We prove equidistribution of Weierstrass points on Berkovich curves. Let $X$ be a smooth proper curve of positive genus over a complete algebraically closed non-Archimedean field $K$ of equal characteristic zero with a non-trivial valuation. Let $L$ be a line bundle of positive degree on $X$. The Weierstrass points of powers of $L$ are equidistributed according to the Zhang-Arakelov measure on the analytification $X^{an}$. This provides a non-Archimedean analogue of a theorem of Mumford and Neeman. Along the way we provide a description of the reduction of Weierstrass points, answering a quest…
Let K be a global field of characteristic not 2. Let Z be a symmetric variety defined over K and S a finite set of places of K. We obtain counting and equidistribution results for the S-integral points of Z. Our results are effective when K is a number field.
It is an open problem whether repelling periodic points are dense in the classical Julia set of a non-archimedean rational function of degree more than one. We give a partial positive answer to this question based on a study of a logarithmic equidistribution on the Berkovich projective line over non-archimedean fields.
In this paper we study spherical equidistribution on the space of (translates of) adelic lattices, which we apply to understand the fine-scale statistics of the directions in the set of shifted primitive lattice points. We also apply our results to the distribution of the free path lengths in the Boltzmann--Grad limit for point sets such as (possibly non-rational) translates of the lattice points all of whose coordinates are squarefree. Besides the equidistribution results for translates of expanding horospheres, a key ingredient is a probabilistic argument which allows us to tackle the techni…
Let $k$ be a number field. We study how well can finite sets of $\mathcal O_k$ equidistribute modulo powers of prime ideals, for all prime ideals at the same time. Our main result states that the optimal rate of equidistribution in $\mathcal O_k$ predicted by the local contstraints cannot be achieved unless $k=\mathcal Q$. We deduce that $\mathcal Q$ is the only number field where the ring of integers $\mathcal O_k$ admits a simultaneous $\frak p$-ordering, answering a question of Bhargava. Along the way we establish a non-trivial upper bound on the number of solutions $x\in \mathcal O_k$ of t…
Let $K$ be a algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 that is complete with respect to a non-Archimedean absolute value. Let $ϕ\in K(z)$ with $\textrm{deg}(ϕ)\geq 2$. In this paper we establish uniform logarithmic equidistribution of the crucial measures $ν_{ϕ^n}$ attached to the iterates of $ϕ$. These measures were introduced by Rumely in his study of the Minimal Resultant Locus of $ϕ$. Our equidistribution result comes from a bound on the diameter of points in $\textrm{supp}(ν_{ϕ^n})$ that depends only on $n$ and $ϕ$. We also show that the sets $\textrm{MinResLoc}(ϕ^n)$ are bounded ind…
We give a simpler proof of an earlier result giving an asymptotic estimate for the number of integral matrices, in large balls, with a given monic integral irreducible polynomial as their common characteristic polynomial. The proof uses equidistributions of polynomial trajectories on SL(n,R)/SL(n,Z), which is a generalization of Ratner's theorem on equidistributions of unipotent trajectories. We also compute the exact constants appearing in the above mentioned asymptotic estimate.
We prove a quantitative equidistribution statement for certain adelic homogeneous subsets in positive characteristic. As an application, we describe a proof of property tau for arithmetic groups in this context.
In the present article, we define a notion of good height functions on quasi-projective varieties $V$ defined over number fields and prove an equidistribution theorem of small points for such height functions. Those good height functions are defined as limits of height functions associated with semi-positive adelic metrization on big and nef $\mathbb{Q}$-line bundles on projective models of $V$ satisfying mild assumptions. Building on a recent work of the author and Vigny as well as on a classical estimate of Call and Silverman, and inspiring from recent works of Kühne and Yuan and Zhang, we d…
Recently Mohammadi and Salehi-Golsefidy gave necessary and sufficient conditions under which certain translates of homogeneous measures converge, and they determined the limiting measures in the cases of convergence. The class of measures they considered includes the maximal horospherical measures. In this paper we prove the corresponding effective equidistribution results in the space of unimodular lattices. We also prove the corresponding results for probability measures with absolutely continuous densities in rank two and three. Then we address the problem of determining the error terms in …
Fix a finite field. A hyperelliptic curve determines a measure on the discrete space of rank two bundles on the projective line: the mass of a given vector bundle is the number of line bundles whose pushforward it is. In a sequence of hyperelliptic curves whose genera tend to infinity, these measures tend to the natural measure on the space of rank two bundles. This is a function field analogue of Duke's theorem on the equidistribution of Heegner points, and can be proven similarly: it follows from a manipulation of zeta functions, plus the Riemann Hypothesis for curves. Likewise, a sequence o…
We establish a quantitative adelic equidistribution theorem for a sequence of algebraic zeros divisors on the projective line over the separable closure of a product formula field having small diagonals and small $g$-heights with respect to an adelic normalized weight $g$ in arbitrary characteristic and in possibly non-separable setting, and obtain local proximity estimates between the iterations of a rational function $f\in k(z)$ of degree $>1$ and a rational function $a\in k(z)$ of degree $>0$ over a product formula field $k$ of characteristic $0$, applying this quantitative adelic equidistr…
We show that for a positive proportion of Laplace eigenvalues $λ_j$ the associated Hecke-Maass $L$-functions $L(s,u_j)$ approximate with arbitrary precision any target function $f(s)$ on a closed disc with center in $3/4$ and radius $r<1/4$. The main ingredients in the proof are the spectral large sieve of Deshouillers-Iwaniec and Sarnak's equidistribution theorem for Hecke eigenvalues.
We present a new method for constructing an orthogonal step scaling function on local fields of positive characteristic, which generates multiresolution analysis.
We prove a formula for special L-values of Anderson's modules, analogue in positive characteristic of the class number formula. We apply this result to two kinds of L-series.
We introduce alternating multizeta values in positive characteristic which are generalizations of Thakur multizeta values. We establish their fundamental properties including non-vanishing, sum-shuffle relations, period interpretation and linear independence which is a direct sum result for these values.
Let $ϕ(z)$ be a non-isotrivial rational function in one-variable with coefficients in $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p(t)$ and assume that $γ\in\mathbb{P}^1(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p(t))$ is not a post-critical point for $ϕ$. Then we prove that the diophantine approximation exponent of elements of $ϕ^{-m}(γ)$ are eventually bounded above by $\lceil d^m/2\rceil+1$. To do this, we mix diophantine techniques in characteristic $p$ with the adelic equidistribution of small points in Berkovich space. As an application, we deduce a form of Silverman's celebrated limit theorem in this setting. Namely, if we tak…
We prove a low characteristic counterpart to the main result in (Peluse, 2019), establishing power saving bounds for the polynomial Szemerédi theorem for certain families of polynomials. Namely, we show that if $P_1, \dots, P_m \in (\mathbb{F}_p[t])[y]$ satisfy an equidistribution condition, which is a natural variant of the independence condition in (Peluse, 2019) for our context, then there exists $γ> 0$ such that for any $q = p^k$ and any $A_0, A_1, \dots, A_m \subseteq \mathbb{F}_q$, \begin{align*} \left| \left\{ (x,y) \in \mathbb{F}_q^2 : x \in A_0, x + P_1(y) \in A_1, \dots, x + P_m(y) \…
We give a new proof of the Mordell-Lang conjecture in positive characteristic for finitely generated subgroups. We also make some progress towards the full Mordell-Lang conjecture in positive characteristic.
This appendix shows that the Fundamental lemma of Jacquet-Rallis, proved by Zhiwei Yun in the positive charactersitic case, is also true in characteristic zero, when residue characteristic is sufficiently large. In fact, this follows immediately from the article "Transfer Principle for the Fundamental Lemma" by R. Cluckers, T.C. Hales and F.Loeser.
We prove a negative solution to the analogue of Hilbert's tenth problem for rings of one variable non-Archimedean entire functions in any characteristic. In the positive characteristic case we prove more: the ring of rational integers is uniformly positive existentially interpretable in the class of $\{0,1,t,+,\cdot,=\}$-structures consisting of positive characteristic rings of entire functions on the variable $t$. From this we deduce uniform undecidability results for the positive existential theory of such structures. As a key intermediate step, we prove a rationality result for the solution…
We study the existence of Fuchsian differential equations in positive characteristic with nilpotent p-curvature, and given local invariants. In the case of differential equations with logarithmic local mononodromy, we determine the minimal possible degree of a polynomial solution.
Lech proved in 1953 that the set of zeroes of a linear recurrence sequence in a field of characteristic 0 is the union of a finite set and finitely many infinite arithmetic progressions. This result is known as the Skolem-Mahler-Lech theorem. Lech gave a counterexample to a similar statement in positive characteristic. We will present some more pathological examples. We will state and prove a correct analog of the Skolem-Mahler-Lech theorem in positive characteristic. The zeroes of a recurrence sequence in positive characteristic can be described using finite automata.
We prove the equality of two non-logarithmic ramification filtrations defined by Matsuda and Abbes-Saito for the abelianized absolute Galois group of a complete discrete valuation field in positive characteristic. We also compute the refined Swan conductor and the characteristic form of a character of the fundamental group of a smooth separated scheme over a perfect field of positive characteristic by using sheaves of Witt vectors.
An umbral calculus over local fields of positive characteristic is developed on the basis of a relation of binomial type satisfied by the Carlitz polynomials. Orthonormal bases in the space of continuous $\mathbb F_q$-linear functions are constructed.
Let $Q(X)$ be any integral primitive positive definite quadratic form with discriminant $D$ and in $k$ variables where $k\geq4$. We give an upper bound on the number of integral solutions of $Q(X)=n$ for any integer $n$ in terms of $n$, $k$ and $D$. As a corollary, we give a definite answer to a conjecture of Rudnick and Lester on the small scale equidistribution of orthonormal basis of eigenfunctions restricted to an individual eigenspace on the flat torus $\mathbb{T}^d$ for $d\geq 5$. Another application of our main theorem gives a sharp upper bound on $A_{d}(n,t)$, the number of representat…
