We study a variety of problems about homothets of sets related to the Kakeya conjecture. In particular, we show many of these problems are equivalent to the arithmetic Kakeya conjecture of Katz and Tao. We also provide a proof that the arithmetic Kakeya conjecture implies the Kakeya conjecture for packing dimension, as this implication was previously only known for Minkowski dimension.
We consider several questions analogous to the classical results of Stein and Bourgain about the Lebesgue measure of a set containing a sphere centered at every point of $[0,1]^n$, where we replace spheres by arbitrary polytopes. We give a lower bound for polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^n$, and show that this is sharp for simplices. Finally, we generalize number theoretic methods of Green and Ruzsa to study patterns in number fields and thereby provide upper bounds for several of these homothet problems.
The arithmetic Kakeya conjecture, formulated by Katz and Tao in 2002, is a statement about addition of finite sets. It is known to imply a form of the Kakeya conjecture, namely that the upper Minkowski dimension of a Besicovitch set in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is $n$. In this note we discuss this conjecture, giving a number of equivalent forms of it. We show that a natural finite field variant of it does hold. We also give some lower bounds.
We prove that all bounded subsets of $\mathbb{Q}_p^n$ containing a line segment of unit length in every direction have Hausdorff and Minkowski dimension $n$. This is the analogue of the classical Kakeya conjecture with $\mathbb{R}$ replaced by $\mathbb{Q}_p$.
We state and prove an analogue of the Kakeya conjecture for the local field $\mathbb{F}_q(\!(t)\!)$. This extends Arsovski's result on the Kakeya conjecture to local fields of positive characteristic. We also prove the Kakeya maximal conjecture in this setting.
A two-dimensional Besicovitch set over a finite field is a subset of the finite plane containing a line in each direction. In this paper, we conjecture a sharp lower bound for the size of such a subset and prove some results toward this conjecture.
Rudin conjectured that there are never more than c N^(1/2) squares in an arithmetic progression of length N. Motivated by this surprisingly difficult problem we formulate more than twenty conjectures in harmonic analysis, analytic number theory, arithmetic geometry, discrete geometry and additive combinatorics (some old and some new) which each, if true, would shed light on Rudin's conjecture.
In this paper we investigate the recent advances by Zhang, Maynard and Pintz towards Polignac's conjecture and give some new results concerning the relationship between Polignac numbers and arithmetic progressions.
In this work, we study the arithmetic nature of the numbers of the form $n^{\g}$, for $n \in \N$ and $\g\in \C$. We also consider a related conjecture and we show that it is a consequence of the unipresent Schanuel's conjecture.
For two odd primes $p$ and $q$ such that $p<q$, let $A(p,q):=(a_k)_{k=1}^{\infty}$ be the arithmetic progression whose $k$th term is given by $a_k=(k-1)(q-p)+p$ (i.e., with $a_1=p$ and $a_2=q$). Here we conjecture that for every positive integer $a>1$ there exist a positive integer $n$ and two odd primes $p$ and $q$ such that $a$ can be expressed as a sum of the first $2n$ terms of the arithmetic progression $A(p,q)$. Notice that in the case of even $a$, this conjecture immediately follows from Goldbach's conjecture. We also propose the analogous conjecture for odd positive integers $a>1$ as w…
We define some formal moduli space of quasi-isogenies of isoclinic $p$-divisible groups with a non-reductive group as the "structure group". We then formulate new Arithmetic Fundamental Lemma conjectures for Bessel subgroups in the context of the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjectures. Some (very limited) evidence is presented.
We generalize a result of Sury and prove that uniform discreteness of cocompact lattices in higher rank semisimple Lie groups (first conjectured by Margulis) is equivalent to a weak form of Lehmer's conjecture. We include a short survey of related results and conjectures.
We prove upper bounds for the error term of the distribution of squarefree numbers up to $X$ in arithmetic progressions modulo $q$ making progress towards two well-known conjectures concerning this distribution and improving upon earlier results by Hooley. We make use of recent estimates for short exponential sums by Bourgain-Garaev and for exponential sums twisted by the Möbius function by Bourgain and Fouvry-Kowalski-Michel.
We prove the lower bound for the number of Lucas non-Wieferich primes in arithmetic progressions. More precisely, for any given integer $k\geq 2$ there are $\gg \log x$ Lucas non-Wieferich primes $p\leq x$ such that $p\equiv\pm1\pmod{k}$, assuming the $abc$ conjecture for number fields. Further, we discuss some applications of Lucas sequences in Cryptography.
This paper has been withdrawn by the author because Conjecture 1 is false. Please see arXiv:0901.2093 for a justification that Conjecture 1 is false. The other main results are also available from the above URL.
We survey recent joint work with M. Rapoport and W. Zhang related to the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for Shimura varieties attached to unitary groups.
In the present work we prove a number of surprising results about gaps between consecutive primes and arithmetic progressions in the sequence of generalized twin primes which could not have been proven without the recent fantastic achievement of Yitang Zhang about the existence of bounded gaps between consecutive primes. Most of these results would have belonged to the category of science fiction a decade ago. However, the presented results are far from being immediate consequences of Zhang's famous theorem: they require various new ideas, other important properties of the applied sieve functi…
In the relative trace formula approach to the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture, we formulate a local conjecture (arithmetic transfer) in the case of an exotic smooth formal moduli space of p-divisible groups, associated to a unitary group relative to a ramified quadratic extension of a p-adic field. We prove our conjecture in the case of a unitary group in three variables.
We define various formal moduli spaces of p-divisible groups which are regular, and morphisms between them. We formulate arithmetic transfer conjectures, which are variants of the arithmetic fundamental lemma conjecture of the third author in the presence of ramification. These conjectures include the AT conjecture of our previous joint paper. We prove these conjectures in low-dimensional cases.
We study the special value conjecture for the Zeta function of a proper regular arithmetic scheme X introduced by Flach and Morin in the case n=1. We compute the correction factor C(X,1) left unspecified in the original statement of the Flach-Morin Conjecture, thereby developing some results on the eh-topology introduced by Geisser. We then specialize further to the case where X is an arithmetic surface and show that the conjecture of Flach and Morin is equivalent to the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture.

Grothendieck's conjecture on p-curvatures predicts that an arithmetic differential equation has a full set of algebraic solutions if and only if its reduction in positive characteristic has a full set of rational solutions for almost all finite places. It is equivalent to Katz's conjectural description of the generic Galois group. In this paper we prove an analogous statement for arithmetic q-difference equation.
Xue proved an equational refinement of the unitary Shimura curve case of the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture via the Gross-Zagier formula for quaternionic Shimura curves. On the other hand, Rapoport, Smithling and Zhang posed a variant of the conjecture, using modified PEL type Shimura varieties, which we call RSZ Shimura varieties. We reinterpret the result of Xue in terms of the modified Shimura curves. We then use the reinterpretation to prove a case of the variant of the conjecture. Our result combined with the work of Xue establishes a connection between the variant and the Gross-Z…
We prove a Diophantine approximation inequality for rational points in varieties of any dimension, in the direction of Vojta's conjecture with truncated counting functions. Our results also provide a bound towards the $abc$ conjecture which in several cases is subexponential. The main theorem gives a lower bound for the truncated counting function relative to a divisor with sufficiently many components, in terms of the proximity to an algebraic point. Furthermore, we show that the Lang-Waldschmidt conjecture implies a special case of Vojta's conjecture with truncation in arbitrary dimension. O…
We prove that for any prime $p>2$, $q=p^ν$ a power of $p$, $n\ge p$ and $G=S_n$ or $G=A_n$ (symmetric or alternating group) there exists a Galois extension $K/\mathbb F_q(T)$ ramified only over $\infty$ with $\mathrm{Gal}(K/\mathbb F_q(T))=G$. This confirms a conjecture of Abhyankar for the case of symmetric and alternating groups over finite fields of odd characteristic.
Hegarty conjectured for $n\neq 2, 3, 5, 7$ that $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ has a permutation which destroys all arithmetic progressions mod $n$. For $n\ge n_0$, Hegarty and Martinsson demonstrated that $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ has an arithmetic-progression destroying permutation. However $n_0\approx 1.4\times 10^{14}$ and thus resolving the conjecture in full remained out of reach of any computational techniques. However, this paper using constructions modeled after those used by Elkies and Swaminathan for the case of $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ with $p$ being prime, establish the conjecture in ful…
We generalized several results for the arithmetic dynamics of monomial maps, including Silverman's conjectures on height growth, dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture, and dynamical Manin-Mumford conjecture. These results are originally known for monomial maps on algebraic tori. We extend the results to arbitrary toric varieties.
We establish a valuative version of Grothendieck's section conjecture for curves over p-adic local fields. The image of every section is contained in the decomposition subgroup of a valuation which prolongs the p-adic valuation to the function field of the curve.
Let K be an arithmetic function field, that is, a field of finite type over the rational number field. In this note, as an application of the height theory due to Chen-Moriwaki, we would like to show that the solutions of Fermat's curve X^N + y^N = 1 of degree N over K consist of only either 0 or roots of unity for almost positive integers N. More precisely, the density of such N is 1.
We define variants of PEL type of the Shimura varieties that appear in the context of the Arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture. We formulate for them a version of the AGGP conjecture. We also construct (global and semi-global) integral models of these Shimura varieties and formulate for them conjectures on arithmetic intersection numbers. We prove some of these conjectures in low dimension.
Let $σ(n)$ denote the sum of the positive divisors of $n$. We prove that for any positive integer $k$, there is a number $m$ for which the equation $σ(x)=m$ has exactly $k$ solutions, settling a conjecture of Sierpiński from 1955. Additionally, it is shown that for every positive even $k$, there is a number $m$ for which the equation $ϕ(x)=m$ has exactly $k$ solutions, where $ϕ$ is Euler's function, making progress toward another conjecture of Sierpiński from 1955.
We prove the arithmetic fundamental lemma conjecture over a general $p$-adic field with odd residue cardinality $q\geq \dim V$. Our strategy is similar to the one used by the second author during his proof of the AFL over $\mathbb{Q}_p$ (arXiv:1909.02697), but only requires the modularity of divisor generating series on the Shimura variety (as opposed to its integral model). The resulting increase in flexibility allows us to work over an arbitrary base field. To carry out the strategy, we also generalize results of Howard (arXiv:1303.0545) on CM-cycle intersection and of Ehlen--Sankaran (arXiv…
Suppose $E$ is an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ and $χ$ is a Dirichlet character. We use statistical properties of modular symbols to estimate heuristically the probability that $L(E,χ,1) = 0$. Via the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, this gives a heuristic estimate of the probability that the Mordell-Weil rank grows in abelian extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$. Using this heuristic we find a large class of infinite abelian extensions $F$ where we expect $E(F)$ to be finitely generated. Our work was inspired by earlier conjectures (based on random matrix heuristics) due to David, Fearnley, an…
In this paper, we prove an explicit arithmetic intersection formula between arithmetic Hirzebruch-Zagier divisors and arithmetic CM cycles in a Hilbert modular surface over $\mathbb Z$. As applications, we obtain the first `non-abelian' Chowla-Selberg formula, which is a special case of Colmez's conjecture; an explicit arithmetic intersection formula between arithmetic Humbert surfaces and CM cycles in the arithmetic Siegel modular variety of genus two; Lauter's conjecture about the denominators of CM values of Igusa invariants; and a result about bad reductions of CM genus two curves.
We state and investigate an integral analogue of the André-Oort conjecture (in integral models of Shimura varieties). We establish an instance of this conjecture: the case of a modular curve, as a scheme over Z. It is a scheme of dimension two and, already in this case, our conjecture is highly non-trivial. Our approach relies on equidistribution estimates related to subconvexity in analytic number theory and our result is unconditional.
We define certain arithmetic derivatives on $\mathbb{Z}$ that respect the Leibniz rule, are additive for a chosen equation $a+b=c$, and satisfy a suitable non-degeneracy condition. Using Geometry of Numbers, we unconditionally show their existence with controlled size. We prove that any power-saving improvement on our size bounds would give a version of the $abc$ Conjecture. In fact, we show that the existence of sufficiently small arithmetic derivatives in our sense is equivalent to the $abc$ Conjecture. Our results give an explicit manifestation of an analogy suggested by Vojta in the eighti…
Let Q(N;q,a) denotes the number of squares in the arithmetic progression qn+a, for n=0, 1,...,N-1, and let Q(N) be the maximum of Q(N;q,a) over all non-trivial arithmetic progressions qn + a. Rudin's conjecture asserts that Q(N)=O(Sqrt(N)), and in its stronger form that Q(N)=Q(N;24,1) if N=> 6. We prove the conjecture above for 6<=N<=52. We even prove that the arithmetic progression 24n+1 is the only one, up to equivalence, that contains Q(N) squares for the values of N such that Q(N) increases, for 7<=N<=52 (hence, for N=8,13,16,23,27,36,41 and 52). This allow us to assert, what we have calle…
The Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture relates two different invariants of a surjective endomorphism, the dynamical and arithmetic degrees. As the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture is only meaningful when a morphism has a Zariski dense orbit, it has no content for varieties with positive Kodaira dimension. A generalization of the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture which is meaningful in positive Kodaira dimension is the so called sAND conjecture, which involves the set of "small" arithmetic degrees. Kawaguchi and Silverman showed that a small arithmetic degree is the modulus of an eigenvalue of $f^*\colo…
The celebrated result of Eskin, Margulis and Mozes (1998) and Dani and Margulis (1993) on quantitative Oppenheim conjecture says that for irrational quadratic forms $q$ of rank at least 5, the number of integral vectors $\mathbf v$ such that $q(\mathbf v)$ is in a given bounded interval is asymptotically equal to the volume of the set of real vectors $\mathbf v$ such that $q(\mathbf v)$ is in the same interval. In dimension $3$ or $4$, there are exceptional quadratic forms which fail to satisfy the quantitative Oppenheim conjecture. Even in those cases, one can say that almost all quadratic fo…
Given a surjective endomorphism $f: X \to X$ on a projective variety over a number field, one can define the arithmetic degree $α_f(x)$ of $f$ at a point $x$ in $X$. The Kawaguchi - Silverman Conjecture (KSC) predicts that any forward $f$-orbit of a point $x$ in $X$ at which the arithmetic degree $α_f(x)$ is strictly smaller than the first dynamical degree $δ_f$ of $f$ is not Zariski dense. We extend the KSC to sAND (= small Arithmetic Non-Density) Conjecture that the locus $Z_f(d)$ of all points of small arithmetic degree is not Zariski dense, and verify this sAND Conjecture for endomorphisms…
This paper provides a survey of results on the greatest prime factor, the number of distinct prime factors, the greatest squarefree factor and the greatest m-th powerfree part of a block of consecutive integers, both without any assumption and under assumption of the abc-conjecture. Finally we prove that the explicit abc-conjecture implies the Erdős-Woods conjecture for each k>2.
Let $τ(n)$ be Ramanujan's tau function, defined by the discriminant modular form \[ Δ(z) = q\prod_{j=1}^{\infty}(1-q^{j})^{24}\ =\ \sum_{n=1}^{\infty}τ(n) q^n \,,q=e^{2πi z} \] (this is the unique holomorphic normalized cuspidal newform of weight 12 and level 1). Lehmer's conjecture asserts that $τ(n)\neq 0$ for all $n\geq 1$; since $τ(n)$ is multiplicative, it suffices to study primes $p$ for which $τ(p)$ might possibly be zero. Assuming standard conjectures for the twisted symmetric power $L$-functions associated to $τ$ (including GRH), we prove that if $x\geq 10^{50}$, then \[ \#\{x < p\leq…
In this paper we extend a conjecture of Ash and Sinnott relating niveau one Galois representation to the mod p cohomology of congruence subgroups of SL(n,Z) to include Galois representations of higher niveau. We then present computational evidence for our conjecture in the case n=3 in the form of three-dimensional Galois representations which appear to correspond to cohomology eigenclasses as predicted by the conjecture. Our examples include Galois representations with nontrivial weight and level, as well as irreducible three-dimensional representations which are in no obvious way related to l…
