In this paper we extend a conjecture of Ash and Sinnott relating niveau one Galois representation to the mod p cohomology of congruence subgroups of SL(n,Z) to include Galois representations of higher niveau. We then present computational evidence for our conjecture in the case n=3 in the form of three-dimensional Galois representations which appear to correspond to cohomology eigenclasses as predicted by the conjecture. Our examples include Galois representations with nontrivial weight and level, as well as irreducible three-dimensional representations which are in no obvious way related to lower dimensional representations. In addition, we prove that certain symmetric square representations are actually attached to cohomology eigenclasses predicted by the conjecture.
We develop a computational framework for the statistical characterization of Galois characters with finite image, with application to characterizing Galois groups and establishing equivalence of characters of finite images of $\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$.
We prove the existence of Euler systems for adjoint modular Galois representations using deformations of Galois representations coming from Hilbert modular forms and relate them to $p$-adic $L$-functions under a conjectural formula for the Fitting ideals of some equivariant congruence modules for abelian base change.
Differential equations have arithmetic analogues in which derivatives are replaced by Fermat quotients; these analogues are called arithmetic differential equations and the present paper is concerned with the "linear" ones. The equations themselves were introduced in a previous paper. In the present paper we deal with the solutions of these equations as well as with the differential Galois groups attached to the solutions.
We use techniques of relative algebraic K-theory to develop a common refinement of the existing theories of metrized and hermitian Galois structures in arithmetic. As a first application of this very general approach, we then use it to prove several new results, and to formulate a framework of new conjectures, concerning the detailed arithmetic properties of wildly ramified Galois-Gauss sums.
We address the problem of the determination of the images of three-dimensional geometric and modular Galois representations. In the modular case the existence of these representations is only conjectural. We give conditions to ensure that the images are as large as possible for almost every prime. We compute some examples and stress the applications to inverse Galois theory.
In connection with our previous work on semi-galois categories, this paper proves an arithmetic analogue of Christol's theorem concerning an automata-theoretic characterization of when a formal power series over finite field is algebraic over the polynomial ring. There are by now several variants of Christol's theorem, all of which are concerned with rings of positive characteristic. This paper provides an arithmetic (or F_1) variant of Christol's theorem in the sense that it replaces the polynomial ring with the ring of integers of a number field and the ring of formal power series with the r…
Field Arithmetic studies the interplay between arithmetical properties of fields and their absolute Galois groups. Here we studies fields satisfying local global principles for rational points of varieties and profinite groups satisfying local global principles for solvability of embedding problems.
In \cite{S}, Shyr derived an analogue of Dirichlet's class number formula for arithmetic Tori. We use this formula to derive a Brauer-Siegel formula for Tori, relating the Discriminant of a torus to the product of its regulator and class number. We apply this formula to derive asymptotics and lower bounds for Galois orbits of CM points in the Siegel modular variety $A_{g,1}$. Specifically, we ask that the sizes of these orbits grows like a power of Discriminant of the underlying endomorphism algebra. We prove this unconditionally in the case $g\leq 5$, and for all $g$ under the Generalized Rie…
We investigate the Galois cohomology of finitely generated maximal pro-$p$ quotients of absolute Galois groups. Assuming the well-known conjectural description of these groups, we show that Galois cohomology has the PBW property. Hence in particular it is a Koszul algebra. This answers positively a conjecture by Positselski in this case. We also provide an analogous unconditional result about Pythagorean fields. Moreover, we establish some results that relate the quadratic dual of Galois cohomology with $p$-Zassenhaus filtration on the group. This paper also contains a survey of Koszul propert…
We describe the effect of the differential operators defined by Boecherer-Nagaoka, Flander-Ghitza and Yamauchi on the Galois representations (conjecturally) attached to Siegel modular eigenforms.
We propose a conjectural characterization of when the dynamical Galois group associated to a polynomial is abelian, and we prove our conjecture in several cases, including the stable quadratic case over ${\mathbb Q}$. In the postcritically infinite case, the proof uses algebraic techniques, including a result concerning ramification in towers of cyclic $p$-extensions. In the postcritically finite case, the proof uses the theory of heights together with results of Amoroso-Zannier and Amoroso-Dvornicich, as well as properties of the Arakelov-Zhang pairing.
The main conjecture of Iwasawa theory is a conjecture on the relation between a Selmer group and a conjectural $p$-adic $L$-function. This conjectural $p$-adic $L$-function is expected to satisfy a conjectural functional equation in a certain sense. In view of the main conjecture and this conjectural functional equation, one would expect to have certain algebraic relationship between the Selmer group attached to a Galois representation and the Selmer group attached to the Tate twist of the dual of the Galois representation. It is precisely a component of this algebraic relationship that this p…
In our previous paper we describe the Galois module structures of $p$th-power class groups $K^\times/{K^{\times p}}$, where $K/F$ is a cyclic extension of degree $p$ over a field $F$ containing a primitive $p$th root of unity. Our description relies upon arithmetic invariants associated with $K/F$. Here we construct field extensions $K/F$ with prescribed arithmetic invariants, thus completing our classification of Galois modules $K^{\times}/K^{\times p}$.
The power classes of a field are well-known for their ability to parameterize elementary $p$-abelian Galois extensions. These classical objects have recently been reexamined through the lens of their Galois module structure. Module decompositions have been computed in several cases, providing deep new insight into absolute Galois groups. The surprising result in each case is that there are far fewer isomorphism types of indecomposables than one would expect generically, with summands predominately free over associated quotient rings. Though non-free summands are the exception both in their for…
We formulate a general question regarding the size of the iterated Galois groups associated to an algebraic dynamical system and then we discuss some special cases of our question.
This note provides an insight to the diophantine properties of abelian surfaces with quaternionic multiplication over number fields. We study the fields of definition of the endomorphisms on these abelian varieties and the images of the Galois representations on their Tate modules. We illustrate our results with several explicit examples.
In the present paper, we will show that three apparently disjoint objects: Galois representations arising from twenty-seven lines on a cubic surface (number theory and arithmetic algebraic geometry), Picard modular forms (automorphic forms), rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds and their arithmetic (Diophantine geometry) are intimately related to Hessian polyhedra and their invariants. We construct a Galois representation whose image is a proper subgroup of $W(E_6)$, the Weyl group of the exceptional Lie algebra $E_6$. We give a conjecture about the identification of two different kinds of $L$-function…
Based on the analogies between mapping class groups and absolute Galois groups, we introduce an arithmetic pro-$\ell$ analogue of Orr invariants for a Galois element associated with Galois action on étale fundamental groups of punctured projective lines. At the same time, we also introduce pro-$\ell$ Orr space as an arithmetic analogue of Orr space whose third homotopy group is a target group of Orr invariant. We then determine its rank as $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$-module following Igusa-Orr's computation. Moreover, we investigate its relation with Ellenberg's obstruction to $π_1$-sections associate…
This paper investigates Galois branched covers of the open $p$-adic disc and their reductions to characteristic $p$. Using the field of norms functor of Fontaine and Wintenberger, we show that the special fiber of a Galois cover is determined by arithmetic and geometric properties of the generic fiber and its characteristic zero specializations. As applications, we derive a criterion for good reduction in the abelian case, and give an arithmetic reformulation of the local Oort Conjecture concerning the liftability of cyclic covers of germs of curves.
The arboreal Galois group of a polynomial $f$ over a field $K$ encodes the action of Galois on the iterated preimages of a root point $x_0\in K$, analogous to the action of Galois on the $\ell$-power torsion of an abelian variety. We compute the arboreal Galois group of the postcritically finite polynomial $f(z) = z^2 - 1$ when the field $K$ and root point $x_0$ satisfy a simple condition. We call the resulting group the arithmetic basilica group because of its relation to the basilica group associated with the complex dynamics of $f$. For $K=\mathbb{Q}$, our condition holds for infinitely man…
Let $p$ be a prime number and $F$ a totally real number field. For each prime $\mathfrak{p}$ of $F$ above $p$ we construct a Hecke operator $T_\mathfrak{p}$ acting on $(\mathrm{mod}\, p^m)$ Katz Hilbert modular classes which agrees with the classical Hecke operator at $\mathfrak{p}$ for global sections that lift to characteristic zero. Using these operators and the techniques of patching complexes of F. Calegari and D. Geraghty we prove that the Galois representations arising from torsion Hilbert modular classes of parallel weight ${\bf 1}$ are unramified at $p$ when $[F:\mathbb Q]=2$. Some pa…
We study toric varieties over a field k that split in a Galois extension K/k using Galois cohomology with coefficients in the toric automorphism group. Part of this Galois cohomology fits into an exact sequence induced by the presentation of the class group of the toric variety. This perspective helps to compute the Galois cohomology, particularly for cyclic Galois groups. We use Galois cohomology to classify k-forms of projective spaces when K/k is cyclic, and we also study k-forms of surfaces.
Assume that $X$ and $Y$ are arithmetic schemes, i.e., integral schemes of finite types over $Spec(\mathbb{Z})$. Then $X$ is said to be quasi-galois closed over $Y$ if $X$ has a unique conjugate over $Y$ in some certain algebraically closed field, where the conjugate of $X$ over $Y$ is defined in an evident manner. Now suppose that $ϕ:X\to Y$ is a surjective morphism of finite type such that $X$ is quasi-galois closed over $Y$. In this paper the main theorem says that the function field $ k(X)$ is canonically a Galois extension of $k(Y)$ and the automorphism group ${Aut}(X/Y)$ is isomorphic to …
We construct explicit examples of E_8 lattices occurring in arithmetic for which the natural Galois action is equal to the full group of automorphisms of the lattice, i.e., the Weyl group of E_8. In particular, we give explicit elliptic curves over Q(t) whose Mordell-Weil lattices are isomorphic to E_8 and have maximal Galois action. Our main objects of study are del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1 over number fields. The geometric Picard group, considered as a lattice via the negative of the intersection pairing, contains a sublattice isomorphic to E_8. We construct examples of such surfaces for w…
We study origami $f: C \rightarrow E$ with $G$-Galois cover $Q_8$. For a point $P \in E(\mathbb{Q}) \backslash \left\{ \mathcal{O} \right\}$, we study the field obtained by adjoining to $\mathbb{Q}$ the coordinates of all of the preimages of $P$ under $f$. We find a defining polynomial, $f_{E, Q_8,P}$, for this field and study its Galois group. We give an isomorphism depending on $P$ between a certain subfield of this field and a certain subfield of the 4-division field of the elliptic curve.
We construct algebras of endomorphisms in the derived category of the cohomology of arithmetic manifolds, which are generated by Hecke operators. We construct Galois representations with coefficients in these Hecke algebras and apply this technique to sharpen recent results of P. Scholze.
We describe a graded extension of the usual Hecke algebra: it acts in a graded fashion on the cohomology of an arithmetic group $Γ$. Under favorable conditions, the cohomology is freely generated in a single degree over this graded Hecke algebra. From this construction we extract an action of certain $p$-adic Galois cohomology groups on $H^*(Γ, \mathbb{Q}_p)$, and formulate the central conjecture: the motivic $\mathbb{Q}$-lattice inside these Galois cohomology groups preserves $H^*(Γ,\mathbb{Q})$.
Let $k/\mathbb F_p$ denote a finite field. For any split connected reductive group $G/W(k)$ and certain CM number fields $F$, we deform certain Galois representations $\overlineρ:Gal(\overline F/F) \to G(k)$ to continuous families $X_{\overlineρ}$ of Galois representations $Gal(\overline F/F) \to G(\overline{\mathbb Q_p})$ lifting $\overlineρ$ such that the space of points of $X_{\overlineρ}$ which are geometric (in the sense of the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture) with parallel Hodge-Tate weights has positive codimension in $X_{\overlineρ}$. Thus the set of points in $X_{\overlineρ}$ which could (c…
We can associate local constant to every continuous finite dimensional complex representation of the absolute Galois group $G_F$ of a non-archimedean local field $F/\mathbb{Q}_p$ by Deligne and Langlands. To give explicit formula of local constant of a representation, we need to compute $λ$-functions explicitly. In this thesis we compute $λ_{K/F}$ explicitly, where $K/F$ is a finite degree Galois extension of a non-archimedean local field $F$, except when $K/F$ is a wildly ramified quadratic extension with $F\ne\mathbb{Q}_2$. Then by using this $λ$-function computation, in general, we give an …
We show how the size of the Galois groups of iterates of a quadratic polynomial $f(x)$ can be parametrized by certain rational points on the curves $C_n:y^2=f^n(x)$ and their quadratic twists. To that end, we study the arithmetic of such curves over global and finite fields, translating key problems in the arithmetic of polynomial iteration into a geometric framework. This point of view has several dynamical applications. For instance, we establish a maximality theorem for the Galois groups of the fourth iterate of quadratic polynomials $x^2+c$, using techniques in the theory of rational point…
We study certain unitary CM fields whose Galois closure has Galois group $\operatorname{PSL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q) \times \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$. After investigating the CM types of these fields, we turn towards Colmez's conjectural formula on the Faltings heights of CM abelian varieties. We explicitly calculate the class functions appearing in the statement of the conjecture and then apply refinements of the recently proven average version to establish Colmez's conjecture in this case.
Under hypotheses required for the Taylor-Wiles method, we prove for forms of $U(3)$ which are compact at infinity that the lattice structure on upper alcove algebraic vectors or on principal series types given by the $λ$-isotypic part of completed cohomology is a local invariant of the Galois representation attached to $λ$ when this Galois representation is residually irreducible locally at places dividing $p$. As a crucial input, we establish corresponding mod $p$ multiplicity one results. Our main innovation is the combination of integral Hecke theory and the Taylor--Wiles method.
Mazur's principle gives a criterion under which an irreducible mod l Galois representation arising from a classical modular form of level Np (with p prime to N) also arises from a classical modular form of level N. We consider the analogous question for Galois representations arising from certain unitary Shimura varieties. In particular, we prove an analoge of Mazur's principle for U(2,1) Shimura varities. We also give a conjectural criterion for a Galois representation arising in the cohomology of a unitary Shimura variety whose level subgroup is parahoric at p to also arise in the cohomology…
We study the relationship between the local and global Galois theory of function fields over a complete discretely valued field. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for local separable extensions to descend to global extensions, and for the local absolute Galois group to inject into the global absolute Galois group. As an application we obtain a local-global principle for the index of a variety over such a function field. In this context we also study algebraic versions of van Kampen's theorem, describing the global absolute Galois group as a pushout of local absolute Galois groups.
Fekete polynomials associate with each prime number $p$ a polynomial with coefficients $-1$ or $1$ except the constant term, which is 0. These coefficients reflect the distribution of quadratic residues modulo $p$. These polynomials were first considered in the 19th century in relation to the studies of Dirichlet $L$-functions. In our paper, we introduce two closely related polynomials. We then express their special values at several integers in terms of certain class numbers and generalized Bernoulli numbers. Additionally, we study the splitting fields and the Galois group of these polynomial…
In this paper, we prove a minimal modularity lifting theorem for Galois representations (conjecturally) associated to Siegel modular forms of genus two which are holomorphic limits of discrete series at infinity.
We describe a generalization of the large sieve to situations where the underlying groups are nonabelian, and give several applications to the arithmetic of abelian varieties. In our applications, we sieve the set of primes via the system of representations arising from the Galois action on the torsion points of an abelian variety. The resulting upper bounds require explicit character sum calculations, with stronger results holding if one assumes the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis.
A generalization of Serre's Conjecture asserts that if $F$ is a totally real field, then certain characteristic $p$ representations of Galois groups over $F$ arise from Hilbert modular forms. Moreover it predicts the set of weights of such forms in terms of the local behavior of the Galois representation at primes over $p$. This characterization of the weights, which is formulated using $p$-adic Hodge theory, is known under mild technical hypotheses if $p > 2$. In this paper we give, under the assumption that $p$ is unramified in $F$, a conjectural alternative description for the set of weight…
In this paper, we study the Iwasawa theory of a motive whose Hodge-Tate weights are $0$ or $1$ (thence in practice, of a motive associated to an abelian variety) at a non-ordinary prime, over the cyclotomic tower of a number field that is either totally real or CM. In particular, under certain technical assumptions, we construct Sprung-type Coleman maps on the local Iwasawa cohomology groups and use them to define integral $p$-adic $L$-functions and (one unconditionally and other conjecturally) cotorsion Selmer groups. This allows us to reformulate Perrin-Riou's main conjecture in terms of the…
In 1992, Avner Ash and Mark McConnell presented computational evidence of a connection between three-dimensional Galois representations and certain arithmetic cohomology classes. For some examples they were unable to determine the attached representation. For several Hecke eigenclasses (including one for which Ash and McConnell did not find the Galois representation), we find a Galois representation which appears to be attached and show strong evidence for the uniqueness of this representation. The techniques that we use to find defining polynomials for the Galois representations include a tar…
In this article, we use deformation theory of Galois representations valued in the symplectic group of degree four to prove a freeness result for the cohomology of certain quaternionic unitary Shimura variety over the universal deformation ring for certain type of residual representation satisfying a property called rigidity. This result plays an important role in the proof of the arithmetic level raising theorem for the symplectic similitude group of degree four over the field of rational numbers by the author.
It is shown that the Galois closure of the henselization of a one dimensional local field arising in geometric and arithmetic situation is separably closed.
We complete the picture of local and global arithmetic duality theorems for short complexes of finite Galois modules and tori over $p$-adic function fields. In view of the duality theorems, we deduce a $12$-term Poitou--Tate exact sequence which relates global Galois cohomology groups to restricted topological products of local Galois cohomology groups.
We introduce mod $l$ Milnor invariants of a Galois element associated to Ihara's Galois representation on the pro-$l$ fundamental group of a punctured projective line ($l$ being a prime number), as arithmetic analogues of Milnor invariants of a pure braid. We then show that triple quadratic (resp. cubic) residue symbols of primes in the rational (resp. Eisenstein) number field are expressed by mod $2$ (resp. mod $3$) triple Milnor invariants of Frobenius elements. For this, we introduce dilogarithmic mod $l$ Heisenberg ramified covering ${\cal D}^{(l)}$ of $\mathbb{P}^1$, which may be regarded…
Let $X$ be a normal, separated and integral scheme of finite type over $\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathcal{M}$ a set of closed points of $X$. To a Galois cover $\tilde{X}$ of $X$ unramified over $\mathcal{M}$, we associate a quandle whose underlying set consists of points of $\tilde{X}$ lying over $\mathcal{M}$. As the limit of such quandles over all étale Galois covers and all étale abelian covers, we define topological quandles $Q(X, \mathcal{M})$ and $Q^\mathrm{ab}(X, \mathcal{M})$, respectively. Then we study the problem of reconstruction. Let $K$ be $\mathbb{Q}$ or a quadratic field, $\mathcal{O}_…
What is the true order of growth of torsion in the cohomology of an arithmetic group? Let $D$ be a quaternion over an imaginary quadratic field $F.$ Let $E/F$ be a cyclic Galois extension with $\mathrm{Gal}(E/F) = \langle σ\rangle.$ We prove lower bounds for "the Lefschetz number of $σ$ acting on torsion cohomology" of certain Galois-stable arithmetic subgroups of $D_E^\times.$ For these same subgroups, we unconditionally prove a would-be-numerical consequence of the existence of a hypothetical base change map for torsion cohomology.
We study the weight part of (a generalisation of) Serre's conjecture for mod l Galois representations associated to automorphic representations on rank two unitary groups for odd primes l. We propose a conjectural set of Serre weights, agreeing with all conjectures in the literature, and under a mild assumption on the image of the mod l Galois representation we are able to show that any modular representation is modular of each conjectured weight. We make no assumptions on the ramification or inertial degrees of l. Our main innovation is to make use of the lifting techniques introduced in our …
